SERVICES TAILORED TO THE LEARNERS’ NEEDS

The pursuit of college success can be daunting for many students, but at

Selkirk College help is always within reach. Whether the issue is big or

small, Student Support Services has the experts ready to assist in turning

challenges into opportunities.

One of the branches of Student Support Services is Aboriginal Services,

a landing spot where students can get connected to college services,

community services, cultural programs and engage at the Gathering Place.

“When moving to a new community, many students often experience

some sense of isolation,” says Jessica Morin, Selkirk’s Aboriginal Cultural

Assistant. “It’s exacerbated somewhat with indigenous students because

they are typically used to smaller communities with more family support.

When you come to college or pursue any new adventure, it can be a bit

of a transition. We try to create a community within the college so that

people can feel better connected to each other.”

Morin grew up in southwestern Ontario with her Ojibway grandmother

just down the street, but it was only when she moved out West that she

got in touch with her First Nations roots. Using dance as a jumping off

point, over the years Morin has discovered the important depth of her

culture. It’s that passion that helps fuel her desire to help others succeed.

“The journey is really important,” she says. “Indigenous students have

so much to offer the greater college community, their perspectives and

contributions are needed.”

A graduate of Selkirk’s Human Services Program, Morin’s own college

experience started with more questions than answers.

“When I came to the college I didn’t know where to start and at times I

felt very frustrated,” she says. “I felt alone and didn’t know what questions

to ask or how to ask them, but you can’t be afraid to ask. I eventually

found my way and now I can help other students succeed.”

With the Gathering Place providing the grounding point, Aboriginal

Services allows students to take that energy into the classroom and

learning environment.

“Sometimes there are barriers that don’t need to be barriers and I’m

available to help navigate any of those difficult waters,” says Morin. “All it

takes is one person who has done it before to show you how to do it. It’s

all about sharing what we know. I keep learning every day and am grateful

for that.”

ESSENTIAL SKILLS

What are 'essential skills'? They are the skills that people need for work. There are nine skills identified including: reading text, document use, numeracy, computer use, writing, oral communication, working with others, thinking, and continuous learning. While many of these skills are already incorporated into existing courses in ABE and ASE, programs can be created to help individuals or workplaces increase job-specific essential skills.

LITERACY

Through our partner, Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL), we support literacy and life-long learning. CBAL offers free adult, family and English as a Second Language (ESL) programs in the communities of the Kootenays. Adults can

improve their basic literacy skills with a tutor or in a small group. Family literacy programs support parents in their role as their child’s first and most important teacher.

Before her hit “Hideaway” topped the charts in

Europe, received millions of hits on YouTube,

garnered a MTV Music Video Award nomination,

brought her to the stages of the David Letterman

Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live and sold out shows

across the world, Kiesza was a Selkirk College

Contemporary Music & Technology program

student.

“Selkirk College is one of the best places where

you can go to really discover who you are as a

musician,” she says. “To go there with an open

mind provided me with a great opportunity to

explore. When I entered Selkirk I thought I was

a folk singer, but I explored all these different

styles and it’s turned out that I’m this electronic,

diva, house musician.”

Kiesza used her Selkirk College experience as a

springboard to the Berklee College of Music in

Boston and her impressive talents have taken

the young singer onto worldwide fame. Looking

back, she credits her time spent in Nelson as a

key turning point in her career.

SCULPTOR OF ARABIAN NIGHTS

In the fall of 2013, Metal Casting Instructor Denis

Kleine was part of an international effort that

brought more than 60 sand sculptors to Kuwait

City to build a massive temporary theme park

called 1001 Arabian Nights. Representing 24

countries, the task of the world’s elite sand artists

was to create almost 80 sculptures as part of the

Remal International Sand and Light Festival.

“Working on a massive project like that was a

great opportunity,” Kleine says. “The energy of

the group was quite magical.”

When he’s not helping build the world’s biggest

sand sculpture project, Kleine can be found at

Kootenay Studio Arts at Selkirk College helping

students build on their skills working with bronze

and other metals. A professional artist for more

than three decades, Kleine is part of a talented

Kootenay Studio Arts faculty that bring out and

build on a student’s passion for creation.

Parker went onto excel in the business program

and at 34, embraced college life. He was a

spark for the college’s Business Club, helped

organize special events, was on the winning

team of the annual Business Competition and

took on the challenges of his course load with

enthusiasm.

“If you are the kind of person who likes an

education that is tailored to people that really

enjoy the learning experience, then Selkirk

College is a great option,” says Parker. “If you

are thinking about coming out of your shell, it’s

a social atmosphere that is awesome. People

actually care here, from the other students to

the faculty… it’s such a supportive place to go

to school.”

To help pay the bills, Parker secured two

student internships thanks to Selkirk’s Co-

Op Education & Employment Services while

completing his diploma.

Weeks before graduation, Parker was hired at

the Bank of Montreal in Castlegar where he

immediately got to work on his new career.

Starting as a Financial Services Manager, Parker

is excited about the opportunities that await.

Taking a bold step towards a new life has paid

off in ways Parker only imagined when he first

reached out to Selkirk College.

“One of the important lessons I learned at

Selkirk College is that the door is always open,”

says Parker. “You just have to work hard and

there will be opportunity.”

Change takes courage, but the rewards can be

life changing. Jeromie Parker is a member of

the Business Administration Class of 2014 and

knows well the deep breath it takes to embark

down a new pathway.

After graduating high school in Kamloops, Parker

took a shot at post-secondary education but

found it wasn’t for him. He went north for a stint

of hard labour in the oil patch and from there

spent a decade as a drywaller.

After being laid-off in 2011, Parker faced a

major crossroad. With a young family that

included two and four year old children, he

went looking for new opportunities.

“This was a chance to get out of drywall after

10 years,” says Parker. “I had a young family

and there was a lot of motivation to get out of

that and find something different.”

He found his solution at Selkirk College.

“My first impression of Selkirk College was a

very positive one,” he says. “When I was calling

trying to enrol, the people were more than

helpful. They didn’t know me at all and they

went above and beyond. By the time I arrived,

I already knew so many people and what they

had done for me. It boosted me and I felt

obligated to make this happen because I didn’t

want to let anybody down.”

DREAM INTERNSHIP IN ROME

Alexandra Winter graduated with a Geographic

Information Systems (GIS) Advanced Diploma in

the spring and within weeks was off to Italy to

begin a four-month dream internship with the

United Nation’s World Food Programme.

“The program provides a very wide variety of

courses,” she says. “When I arrived I thought

GIS was just making maps, but there are so

many different elements.”

Winter’s time spent in the classroom was

just the beginning and taking full advantage

of Selkirk College Co-op Education and

Employment Services (CEES), she was able

reach her goal of taking her newly acquired

skills abroad.

Based in Rome, the World Food Programme

is the largest humanitarian agency that fights

hunger worldwide. When disasters strike or

conflicts arise, the programme provides food

relief to people in need. More than 90 million

people are provided food through the program

annually and the ultimate goal is to create

sustainable food sources in those areas where

it’s needed the most.

“I’m really happy to be in a field where I feel I

am contributing and having a positive impact

on society,” says Winter.

Since 2005, the Selkirk College-Guatemala International

Nursing Experience practicum has been sending students to

the Central American country to foster global understanding

and make a difference in a nation that’s one of the poorest

in the region.

Open to third-year Nursing Program students, the goal of

the practicum is to explore how community development

and health are positively linked. The students collaborate

with their grassroots community organization partners

in addressing fundamental social issues such as poverty,

inequality, discrimination and human rights violations.

One of the primary partners is the Association of Women in

Solidarity which works with women labourers in factories

located in free trade zones surrounding Guatemala City.

“This is an important trip because we are continuing on an

important relationship and helping it evolve on the work

that has been done by students in previous years,” says

Melissa Mazereeuw, a student who took part in the Spring,

2014 trip.

Guatemala has a population of 15.4 million and is comprised

of more than 60 per cent descendants of the ancient Maya.

The country was gripped in a civil war between 1960 and

1996 which continues to have a profound impact on its

people. It is estimated that the wealthiest 10 per cent of

the population receives 50 per cent of all income and that

7.6 million people live in extreme poverty.

The trip is optional for students, but does fulfil the

practicum requirement of the program course load.

Students begin fundraising the $23,000 required to help

pay for the trip in October and put on several events in

the community. Through that work and reaching out to

the community in a variety of ways to get supplies for the

people they work with in Guatemala, the experience goes

beyond the actual journey south.

“One thing that Selkirk College offers that other schools

might not is that sense of community,” says Mazereeuw.

“The instructors really connect with you and you have the

chance to connect with them. You have the small campus

in this beautiful location that is absolutely breathtaking.

Going through the planning of this trip, I really got to

witness the sense of community that much more. I have

never got to experience anything like this in my life, I’m

really humbled. I love this community.”

THE BEST BITES SERVED UP AT TOP CHEF NELSON

The climax of the Professional Cook Training program takes place every

March when students match tastes and put it all on the line for the

community at Top Chef Nelson.

The fun-filled evening challenges teams to create dishes that are served

to a room full of more than 250 people. Those in attendance then vote

on their favourites in the categories of Best Bite, Best Presentation, Best

Dessert and Best Overall. The coveted Top Chef trophies are awarded to

the winning teams.

“I look forward to Top Chef all year because it is the most engaging and

interactive event that we host,” says instructor and event coordinator

Harry Pringle.

Dishes in past years have included Lamb Souvlaki with Metaxa Mint

Glaze, Irish Wedding Salad, Stuffed Hot Popper with In-House Smoked

Bacon, Home Made Jambalaya with House Smoked Sausage and

A CUT ABOVE THE REST

At only 17, Selkirk College student Amber Beckjord made it clear she was a rising star in the

industry when she captured a gold medal at the BC Skills Competition in Hairdressing. Cutting

and styling against 30 of the most talented hairdressing students in the province, Beckjord

turned enough heads in Vancouver to bring home the top prize.

“It’s a lot of hard work… you can’t expect to go far in anything if you are not willing to put

the work in,” says Beckjord. “I spent hours and hours practicing for that competition; it’s the

same way with anything you do. It really helps if you are enjoying what you are doing and I

enjoy doing this.”

What makes Beckjord’s gold medal even more impressive is that she registered at Selkirk

College as an ACE-IT student. The ACE-IT program allows high school students to attend

college for credit towards their high school diploma. In the spring of 2014, Beckjord

graduated from Selkirk College two months before graduating from high school.

“I have always taken classes above my grade, so I thought it was a great opportunity,” she says.

“If I was going to do it anyways… who gets to go to college when they’re still in high school?”

Beckjord’s uncle is Anthony Crosfield, one of Canada’s most celebrated hairstylists and a Selkirk

College Hairdressing program alumni. The co-owner and creative director of Union Salon in

Vancouver, Crosfield won the Slice Network’s Superstar Hair Challenge and has established an

international reputation in the fashion industry.

FOUNDATION PROGRAMS

By completing Foundation Level you are eligible for credit from the Industry Training Authority (ITA) for the theory portion of Level 1 (in some cases Level 2) of the applicable apprenticeship program. High school students can take college level trades training through the Accelerated Credit Enrolment in Industry Training (ACE-IT) program. If you are a high school student, ask your school counsellor about ACE-IT opportunities in your district. ENGLISH INSTRUCTOR AWAKENS RUSSIAN HISTORY

Painting images with words is what Selkirk College English Instructor Myler Wilkinson does

best. Through his teaching and writing, Wilkinson takes students on journeys to far off places

both real and imagined.

Wilkinson’s deepest connection is with Russian history and culture where he has spent more

than three decades soaking it in and turning out works based on his passion.

“My fascination with Russia goes back many, many years and includes long stints living and

teaching there,” he says. “Often I would get blown away by how excessive the culture can be in

various ways, but I felt I always had a place go to which is Russian artists and Russian culture. To

go back to a place that was not problematic to me and instead a beautiful world.”

Wilkinson’s latest work was recognized in the Spring, 2014 edition of The Fiddlehead, where

he was named the winner of the journal’s 23rd Annual Literary Contest for Best Short Fiction.

Wilkinson’s winning short story—The Blood of Slaves—is based on the life of famed Russian writer

Anton Chekhov. The Fiddlehead is Canada’s longest living literary journal and is published four

times a year at the University of New Brunswick.

“The idea of writing a story about a Russian writer who died in 1904 and all of the things that

made him Russian and important as a writer in the world, is not necessarily a topic that you

would think would be immediately interesting to Canadian readers,” says Wilkinson. “But

historical fiction has become more and more important in the last 20 years. In various ways,

writers are trying to think of a real person in history and imagine the parts you will never know.”

Wilkinson was instrumental in the creation of the Mir Centre for Peace on the Castlegar Campus.

He teaches English Literature and in the Peace Studies Program.

STEPPING OFF THE ROAD TO SHAMBHALA AND ONTO A CAREER PATH IN MEDICINE

Following her passion, Anna Bundschuh is embarking on pathway she’s confident will see her giving

back to a small community as a rural doctor.

As a student in the first ever Rural Pre-Medicine Program cohort, Bundschuh is part of a class with

a diverse range of backgrounds and interests. At 36, the single mother of two is undaunted by the

challenge of a 10-year journey that would culminate with graduation from medical school.

“You only have one life to live, if you are looking for change then you should just make it happen,”

Bundschuh says. “My biggest concern is my children, but I have a great family and great support.

We will all take this on together.”

Enrolling in the three-year Rural Pre-Medicine Program meant giving up a successful career as the

executive producer of the Shambhala Music Festival. The world renowned annual electronic music

festival is run by the Bundschuh family and brings more than 10,000 people to their cattle ranch

south of Salmo, transforming it into a small city for the four-day event.

“We have built up something really great and worked on it for a really long time, a lot of people are

stunned that I want to go to Selkirk College and change up my life so much,” says Bundschuh. “But,

I know my strength and capacity is for this area. I certainly know my passion for this field is there.”

A talented artist growing up, Bundschuh didn’t explore her zeal for science until several years after

high school graduation.

“I have a total fascination with the sciences and how the body works,” she says. “It’s so dynamic

and the solutions are not direct, the body is a pretty amazing thing.”

Having grown up on a farm and lived in rural British Columbia her whole life, Bundschuh is excited

about the prospect of becoming a doctor in a small centre.

“All my experience with the festival has very much been about customer service and treating a

guest a certain way,” she says. “I really want to bring that into my practice once I get there. It’s a

privilege for a doctor to hold such an important role in society and help support people during what

can be difficult times. I will treat people with that same importance from beginning to end.”

For over 25 years, Selkirk International has been offering a variety of full-time English language

programs, college diplomas, certificates and associate degrees to international and Canadian

students. Selkirk International also provides support and advice about international scholarships,

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROGRAM

This program develops and refines English language skills for university or advanced studies, professional and career opportunities, or personal growth. Before applying to Selkirk College you will need to know the field of study that you are interested in taking. Whether you are a student just starting your post-secondary journey or returning as a mature student, Selkirk offers a variety of options. Visit:

2. REQUIREMENTS

To attend Selkirk College you can either demonstrate you have met the College and program prerequisites or register in preparation courses. First-time applicants are required to take the College Readiness Tool (CRT), a basic skills assessment of reading and math and used for advising purposes. Please review both general and program-specific admission requirements.

CREATING COMMUNITY, CONNECTING WITH OTHER STUDENTS

Irina Smolina found out about the Selkirk College Ski Resort Operations & Management Program (SROAM) through a Google search and not long after was on her way from Russia to Nelson in search of new opportunty and adventure. Despite challenges with language, Smolina threw herself into the Selkirk College community and before the first semester was over had produced a short film about the international nature of the SROAM Program. With her film now helping attract future students from across Canada and the world, Smolina is proud to be part of building on the college experience that has provided her so many rewards. “It’s fascinating because what Selkirk College promised on the website, I saw it in reality,” Smolina says. “It’s beyond what I expected.”
