NIGHTCLIFF ORCHID SOCIETY ANNUAL AUCTION

Sunday 9 th November at 2.30pm

The annual auction is the penultimate “social” function of the year. It is held usually on a Sunday in November and takes place in our Monday meeting room. The purpose of the auction is twofold.

5 | P a g e

Firstly, it aims to raise sufficient money to reduce the cost of the Christmas Dinner for members.Secondly, it can be a great way to obtain locally grown plants that are not necessarily often available and with the bonus of knowing who the grower is, and being able to inspect it before purchase.

The way the auction works is as follows.

Any plants that have been donated are sold first and all proceeds go towards the Christmas dinner fund

Vendors will have selected which plants they wish to sell and will have assigned the price that they want for each plant. On the day of the auction, NOS will have a list of sellers, plant names and the minimum selling price [as chosen by the owner]. The auctioneer will normally talk briefly about the plant and open the bidding at, or close to the reserve price. Bidding will then proceed. The final selling price is noted down so that the seller receives the money that they wanted, and the club receives any money that is over and above the reserve price.

The fun starts when there are some quite desirable plants, probably in flower, or very large plants, or plants for which there is only 1 specimen. Bidding can become rather competitive if 2 prospective buyers decide that they really want the object of their desire. This is when the club makes much more money than predicted. Most competitive bidding is good natured but there are occasional momentary disagreements.

NOS members simply need to be allocated a bidding number in order to participate. Non members need to pay a$10 fee before receiving their number.

ORCHIDS FLOWERING IN OCTOBER AND NOVEMBER

Having been away so much recently, the shade houses are looking a bit like a war zone with ferns seeming to have gained the upper hand in many pots. After venturing in to see whether there were any actual flowers hiding, several orchids had surprising good displays and one or two were really quite exciting.Dendrobium Golden Aya is a much loved orchid that had decided to put on a stunning display in the last week that I was away, but a couple were still in flower. The plants themselves have a really untidy growth habit and tend to look as though they are close to death. The flowers are also disappointingly short lived, but while they are out, look glorious.

6 | P a g e

Dendrobium fimbriatum had also not flowered for me before [and waited until I had gone away before putting on a great display] but the tail end of its flowering was worth waiting for.

Several other Dendrobium plants were also flowering well. Dendrobium nobile is a plant I find hard to flower. Perhaps 1 or 2 flowers some years, but this year there are flowers everywhere and they are very attractive.

7 | P a g e

Latouria Dendrobes are also out, or in bud, at the moment. Dendrobium alexandre and Dendrobium New Guinea are both flowering and Dendrobium spectabile is in bud.

Dendrobium alexandre

A small soft cane Dendrobium Hamana Lake x Hambuhren Gold is flowering for the second time and one of my speciality “Bunnings” purchases, Dendrobium Burana Twist has flowered for the first time at a very small size.

8 | P a g e

I have a very soft spot for the genus Coelogyne and several of these magnificent plants are also in flower. Coelogyne speciosa, which flowers on and off throughout the year is flowering well, and the seasonal Coelogyne viscosa [pictured] has a nice display at the moment. The beautiful hybrid Coelogyne Louis Forget is out and I am eagerly awaiting my first flowering of Coelogyne Burfordiense whose buds are huge and promise great things!

9 | P a g e

.

Disappointingly, I have very few Bulbophyllum in flower although the primary hybrid Bulbophyllum Tsiku Taurus has an amazing display of blooms at the moment.

The genus Grammatophyllum is one that you either love or hate. The plants themselves tend to be huge, with leaves that attract grasshoppers and red spider mites in equal proportions and the unwieldy, metre plus long inflorescences are also a bit of a nuisance. However, when a plant is in flower, all is forgiven. This plant is Grammatophyllum Yuan Nan Tiger [scriptum x papuanum]

10 | P a g e

Perhaps my best “surprise” was discovering a plant of Aerides multiflora in full bloom. I have had this plant for about 10 years and it has only ever bloomed twice before, usually after a cold dry. I was very surprised to find it flowering so well in late October. I have moved it from a fairly sunny, not very humid place to a much wetter area, so perhaps that has made the difference. Its sister plant that has always been in the wet area is not in bud.

2014 for Nightcliff Orchid Society

This is the last meeting of the year. It has gone very fast [as each year seems to now or am I just getting very old.......].

12 | P a g e

For NOS the year has had its Highs and Lows.

Losing our President, Jennifer Scannella mid way throughout the year was a blow, but we are grateful to Heidi for stepping into the breach and taking over the important role.

We also mourn the loss of Geoff Martin who decided that Queensland would offer him new challenges in terms of growing champion orchids.

NOS has been fortunate that several new members have joined throughout the year including Alissa Caldwell, Peter Caldwell, Shri Campbell, Marilyn Mc Naught. Major apologies if I have missed anyone else.

We will also be losing Marilyn Galt, Sigrid, Shana and Rachel Evans at the end of the year/early next year [also to Queensland]. We thank them for all the work that they have done for the club.

The 3 orchid shows have been a great success this year. Litchfield held another wonderful Spectacular and members of NOS acquitted themselves well in terms of entering quality orchids and running a great Cream Tea facility. The Darwin Royal had near record orchid entries [in recent years] and the raffle provided NOS with a pleasing funds boost. NOS’ Spring Show in its new venue of Tracy Village was a great success and received very positive feedback from visitors. Can it be even bigger and better next year?

The fund raiser at Neil and Sue Smith’s home was also a big success for both LOC and NOS and allowed some excellent social opportunities.

There have been few social opportunities within NOS [this needs to be remedied next year] with the curry evening at Warren Crozier’s house the highlight. Perhaps someone would like to take on the role of social organiser for next year?

And for all other events that I have forgotten; sorry
