WHAT IS A WALK TO EMMAUS?

Emmaus -for the development of Christian leaders

The Gospel of St. Luke relates the story of the risen Christ appearing to the two who were walking along the road from Jerusalem to Emmaus. (Luke 24:13-35) This story provides the image for Emmaus, an Upper Room program that calls for and renews Christian discipleship.

Two friends were walking together. They were sharing their deepest hearts concerns. The risen Christ joined them and explained the scriptures as they walked; how it was ordained that Christ should suffer and so enter His glory. This experience on the road was a heart warming experience as the risen Christ walked and talked with them. The illuminating climax of the experience was when Christ took the bread and said the blessing, then broke it and gave it to them. The two had their eyes opened and they recognized Him as the risen Christ.

Emmaus is centered in the weekend experience. This “Walk to Emmaus” is with friends, the scriptures are explained in such a way to bring light and understanding to our needs. For many, it will be a heart warming experience. Many will share so deeply in worship and Holy Communion that their eyes will be opened and see the risen Christ. Participants will study, discuss and experience God’s grace in community. The context will be in 15 presentations led by lay and clergy around the theme of God’s grace and how that grace comes alive in the Christian community and expresses itself in the world. This grace will become personal in

small communities through a unique approach to table group discussions. Those attending the weekend personally experience God’s grace through prayers and acts of service of a living support community. One of the primary strengths of Emmaus is the follow-up activities.

There are two expectations of a person following his or her Walk to Emmaus:

1. Expand his/her won inner spiritual life.

2. Become a more active disciple of Christ in the world through his/her church.

To nurture this process of discipleship, the Emmaus Movement offers specific opportunities. First, there is a follow-up meeting during the week after one’s Walk to Emmaus. At this meeting each person is given an opportunity to become a part of a reunion group. Four to six persons form a reunion group and meet weekly to reflect and share their disciple opportunities and responsibilities. Second, there will be monthly meetings. All persons of a particular community or area are invited for fellowship, worship and informal instruction. Third, through a newsletter, members become aware of support needs for upcoming events. Opportunity is given to work in the kitchen, pray in the chapel, or participate on a team.

The real focus of the Emmaus Community is not on itself, but on the local church. The objective of Emmaus is to inspire, challenge, and equip local church members for Christian action in their homes, churches, places of work, and communities.

Group Reunion THE GROUP REUNION IS CHARACTERIZED BY BEING: Voluntary – It must be something you want to do. It is a very important part of your 4th Day. Be

faithful to it, and remember it is acceptable to change groups if you do not feel comfortable. Based on Friendship – It is not just a coming together of a group of people but a meeting of people

who are already close friends, people who naturally bond. Personal and Intimate – It is not a discussion group, but one where close friends come together to

share their personal and joint spiritual life. Small in Size – A large group can hardly be close. Three to six members is ideal.

Regular – It meets on a regular basis, preferably weekly, with a fixed membership of friends.

Persevering – The members of a group reunion must be committed to meeting together consistently to enrich each other’s spiritual life, and to participating in meetings even when they feel “down” or “turned off” by a particular meeting or friend.

WE BRING TO THE GROUP REUNION: Idealism – A spirit of hope for the fullness of God’s grace found through praying and sharing together.

Self-Surrender – A sense of commitment to other members of the group, and a willingness to share your life with them.

Charity – An attitude of love for one another and for our fellow man through one another.

IN A GROUP REUNION WE SHARE: Our Prayer Life – Those aids which have nourished our vital union with Christ since the last reunion.

This would include church services, communion, prayers, meditation, etc. Our Life of Action – These are apostolic endeavors we have engaged in, both individually and as a

group member. We share both our successes and our failures, to provide encouragement to others and to obtain their comfort. Many reunions also have an apostolic action which is unique to the group, and form apostolic action plans as a part of each group reunion.

Our Awareness of Christ – Those moments since our last reunion in which we are most aware of Christ and our closeness or distance from him.

Bring your Service Sheet (Reunion Card) and follow the guideline for the meeting. The group reunion should begin and end with a period of prayer to invoke the Holy Spirit to enlighten and guide us in the group reunion and in the Christian life, which we strive to strengthen through our group reunions. A group reunion can last as little as 20 minutes or as long as a full evening, depending on the wishes of the members of the group. The essential element is not the expenditure of time, but the sharing, openness and love which are a part of the meeting.

Christ is Counting on You

Suggestions for Sponsors

Here are a few suggestions for recruitment that should increase your effectiveness, help you properly interpret Emmaus, and emphasize your responsibility in sharing God’s grace as a Sponsor.

FIRST

When you are talking to a married person, we suggest you talk with both husband and wife. We want both husband and wife to make the decision together. Their applications should be turned in at the same time if possible.

SECONDLY

To assure the applicant (Pilgrim) you are personally interested, make plans to bring his/her to the Walk Weekend for check-in. Help with suitcases and registration. Pray regularly and be ready to make personal sacrifices for the Pilgrim while they attend.

THIRDLY

During the Walk weekend, you and your family become a substitute for the Pilgrim. Leave your telephone number with the spouse or other contact person. Do something special for the Pilgrim’s family during the weekend like giving a few hours for shopping or for personal time. Share a meal with the family. Let the family know that you love and want to care for them.

LASTLY

You have responsibilities to the Pilgrim:o Pray during the weekendo Write an agape letter and obtain other letters of love from family and friends (see the

example provided)o Support with your presence at Sponsor’s Hour (Thursday, 7:00 PM), Candlelight

(Saturday, 7:00 PM), and Closing (Sunday, 4:30 PM).o Accompany to a Follow-Up meetingo Introduce to a Reunion Group

Remember, Emmaus is not for everyone. The Walk to Emmaus weekend is designed to build leadership in Christians. It cannot rectify every problem marriage, enthuse every disenchanted church member, or make saints of sinners. The Walk to Emmaus is designed to Change environments through Christian leaders.

Applications can be downloaded from the Servant Heart web site (servantheartemmaus.com). A copy is also enclosed in this packet for your convenience.

WHAT IS AN “AGAPE LETTER”?

As sponsors, one of our most perplexing situations arises when we try to explain to someone what kind of letter we want from them for our Pilgrims. You may want to use the following as a pattern for your letter requesting these agape letters.

Dear __(friend/family of Pilgrim)__

__*_______ will be attending the “Walk to Emmaus” at Camp Whispering Pines on __(date)_________. This is a weekend of spiritual renewal with many beautiful gifts and surprises. One such surprise is the mail that is received from loved ones.

As sponsor, I am responsible for contacting family and close friends and asking for a note or letter to __**_______ so that she/he will receive it during this special weekend. This letter is an opportunity for you to express your appreciation and tell ___**____ what your relationship has meant over the years. You might want to recall some humorous event or some happening that has been special to the two of you. This is a letter of love and WILL BE READ ONLY BY __**_______.

Would you help make __**___’s “Walk to Emmaus” special by doing the following:

1. Write a letter to __**____ and sign it.2. Put it in an envelope, seal it, and write in the upper left corner whether you are

“friend” or “family”.3. Write ___**______’s full name (but not yours) in the address area of this

envelope.4. Put it in a larger envelope and mail it to me at the following address PRIOR to

__________ (date at least a week before walk) so I can get it to the proper place on time.

This should be a complete surprise to ___**_____ so please help make it special by keeping “mum” until it’s all over.

Your letter will be greatly appreciated.

Points To Remember

The Walk to Emmaus is an instrument of Christian renovation. Its purpose is to train leaders who will become solid leaders in their own churches’ ministries.

Do offer your services, whatever they may be, to your pastor. Together with your pastor and other

parishioners you are the church in your area. You need the pastor, and the pastor needs you to be involved in personal ministry. Support the pastors plans and programs.

seek spiritual counsel with your pastor. Be courteous and respectful of his/her time. The pastor has many to serve. Remember you are not special because you have attended an Emmaus weekend.

attend your weekly group reunion and Emmaus community gatherings. Take this opportunity to renew and be accountable. If you think you “have arrived” after three days, remember you have just begun anew.

Do not develop a “holier-than-thou” attitude. Emmaus is only ONE of many instruments of holiness.

bug people, especially clergy persons, to attend Emmaus. This often creates the impression that the Walk to Emmaus is absolutely necessary for salvation. IT IS NOT!

compare the Walk to Emmaus with a retreat. They are two different instruments for renewal. They compliment each other, but the Walk to Emmaus is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

form a clique or special society among yourselves. This is not Christ-like and is repugnant to those who have not had the opportunity to attend Emmaus, or who are not interested.

act as though the Emmaus community is a secret society. When people ask, tell them what Emmaus is and what it meant to you.
