Recognising the Heavyweights in Design and Print

Named after the heavy object that keeps papers in place, The Paperweight Awards honours those who have given the most creative weight to our collection of papers on commissioned works.

Organised by Antalis, in collaboration with Arjowiggins Creative Papers, the inaugural Paperweight Awards 2014, addresses Asia’s most talented designers and printers from China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.

The Paperweight Awards garnered great response, with many designers and printers taking part in the Awards for the first time.

Honouring the Mentors

The panel of judges for the Awards comprised of well-known and experienced professionals in the graphic design and printing industry from across Asia. These judges have been making notable contributions not only in their professional work, but also in sharing their design and print knowledge through classes, courses and seminars with many aspiring individuals over the years.

As part of the Awards presentation in Singapore, the Chief Judge for Design, Dr. Kan Tai-Keung from Hong Kong, shared his experience in merging interest in ink painting with graphic design. His engaging talk inspired many in the audience.

More than 120 works printed on papers from Arjowiggins Creative Papers – Conqueror, Curious Collection, Rives, Rives Sensation, Keaykolour and Village – were finalists and winners in The Paperweight Awards.

Each category rewards a Country Winner, who then competes for the Regional Category Winner and the overall Asia Winner for Design or Print.

Rewarding the Outstanding

The Country Category winners and Regional Category winners, each took home a trophy, a certificate and USD1,000 in cash. The overall Asia winners were presented with a round trip to the Arjowiggins Creative Papers mill in Aberdeen Scotland.

This book brings together the results of The Paperweight Awards 2014, made possible with the inspiring winning works, industry mentors and an audience who appreciate the power of creative paper.

As a world-renowned designer and artist, Dr. Kan is highly skilled in ink painting. He was the first Chinese to be included in “Who’s Who in Graphic Design” of Switzerland and the first designer elected as one of the “Hong Kong Ten Outstanding Young Persons” in 1979. He is now member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale. In 2005, Kan was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Design in the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and is commended officially by receiving the Honor of Silver Bauhinia Star in 2010.

Transformation begins with trust.

The key to Kevin’s success in delivering beautiful solutions is his keen ability to recognise and celebrate the beauty in the human spirit.

Since 1997, he has led Yellow Octopus to become the internationally recognised creative team it is today, winning several awards including Best of Show at HOW International Design Awards 2012 and the Red Dot Award for Communication Design 2012.

However, a true mark of his leadership is that Yellow Octopus has inspired clients and community alike, to trust that design excellence can and should be created for good – effecting positive change for a better society.

This affirmation is the axis on which Yellow Octopus’ diverse portfolio thrives, including work done for clients such as Angliss, Asia Pacific Breweries, Avery Dennison, Mastercard, Resorts World Sentosa, Sennheiser, Shell, Singapore Management University and more.

An Industrial Designer by qualification, Asri Ahmad started his career in 1982 in one of the first design consultancies in Malaysia, Johan Design Associates, before being offered to be the Creative Director of Art & Magic, a design subsidiary of Bates Advertising in early 1991.

His experience spanning more than 30 years of design practice, extends across the core disciplines of branding and design namely, naming & identity, brand communication, packaging, interface design, environment & exhibition, event consultancy, creative content and activation.

Asri is the founding member of wREGA (Graphic Design Association of Malaysia) and a regular curriculum syllabus reviewer (CSR) for Multimedia University, an industry advisor for both University Sains Malaysia and Taylors University and gives regular talks/workshops to young designers and students. He is currently the creative director and partner of Rifaie Chua Sethi Sdn Bhd, a strategic brand consultancy.

TNOP is a Bangkok-based studio that focuses on creating a perfect balance between art and design. Found in Chicago in 2005 by Tnop Wangsillapakun, TNOP believes that a sharp design is about the critical balance of conceptual work and craftsmanship. His philosophy is to create a unique design that can represent client’s culture through distinct contemporary executions, materials and techniques.

TNOP has worked with a wide range of clients from global brands like Corbis Images, Nike, Coca-Cola, and IRENA (International Renewable Energy Agency) to a local businesses like Mitea, a tea shop in Chicago and Alongkorn, a high-level bespoke suit shop in Bangkok. The studio has won many awards and are featured in many books and renowned magazines around the world. TNOP has always been active in the Thai design community by giving lectures and conducting workshops as well as collaborated in art and design exhibitions from time to time.

Tofu created a canvas of a scarf that allowed our recipients to participate and decide what design best suited their individuality. By folding or popping out the “knit” stitches to make a reindeer, mistletoe or polka dot pattern, the possibilities were endless. And the smiles and thumbs-up from our clients and friends were priceless.
