This course has been coordinated through the University of California, San Francisco Department ofOtolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and the Penn Center for Sleep Disorders at the University ofPennsylvania. The program is designed to provide acomprehensive review and update on recent advances in sleep apnea and snoring. New approaches andcontroversies in the management of patients with sleepdisordered breathing will be highlighted. Leaders in thefield from Sleep Medicine, Otolaryngology-Head and NeckSurgery, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Oral andMaxillofacial Surgery, Psychiatry, Pediatrics, BariatricSurgery, Neurology and Obesity Research will share theirmedical and surgical expertise in didactic sessions, casepresentations and workshops. There will be ampleopportunity for interaction with participating faculty. Anelectronic course syllabus, complete with program outlineand up-to-date references, will be provided to eachparticipant. Please bring your laptop if you would like toview the syllabus during the didactic sessions. TARGET AUDIENCEThis continuing medical education program is intended for the physician in Sleep Medicine, Otolaryngology-Headand Neck Surgery, Pulmonary Medicine, Oral andMaxillofacial Surgery, Family Practice, Internal Medicine,Pediatrics, Cardiology, Neurology, Psychiatry, andGeriatrics. Dentists, sleep respiratory therapytechnologists and nurses are also invited to attend this program.
OBJECT IVESUpon completion of this course, participants will be able to: • Apply new developments in the pathogenesis,diagnosis, and management of patients with sleepdisorders and sleep disordered breathing;
• Assess new, alternative, and established medical and surgical treatments for sleep apnea and snoring;
• Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of homevs. in-laboratory sleep testing;
• Assess the medical and social consequences of sleep apnea and snoring;
• Evaluate new insights from upper airway imaging; • Provide new information to patients regarding theassociation between obesity and obstructive sleepapnea and the outcomes of medical and surgicaltreatment of obesity.
