who told us tales of their “adventures” on the Board. Commodores: Michael Dobrzensky, Dorie Zwinger, Brian King and Karen Hiatt shared their past experiences from cruising stories to raising dues to putting in the landing at the Avila Pier to Dorie’s champagne toast to our club’s membership.

Also, I had a very special opportunity (thanks to Melenie Ristow’s coaching) to officiate a wedding at our

We are winding up this year and preparing for a smooth transition to 2018. This holiday season brings a number of fun events along with continued work towards establishing our Small Boat Program, continued coordination of the Water Taxi Service, establishing a co-sponsored regatta in April, and preparing for a new year and hosting two fish-frys served by the 2017 Board to the highest-bidding donors at the Central Coast Aquarium event

and the Avila Beach Civic Association’s Apple Gala Dinner. Also, the Friends of Avila Pier continue to meet and within the next month or two, the club will be hosting a community meeting for the public to view the designs presented for the Avila Pier.

In keeping with the mission of the yacht club, the Avila Beach Community Foundation held an Avila Beach Storytellers’

Evening featuring stories told by our members: Mike Harkness, Pete Kelley, Archie McLaren and Denny Wheeler, (pictured above). We are integral to this community’s history and we are proud to be participating in our community’s events.

My best to you, always,– Mary

Cruising News

by Lettie Fuller,Cruising Captain

Ahoy members. Our cruising events have been amazing this season

with many fun filled activities all year along. We had our last Rendezvous in Santa Barbara on October 8th with three boats sailing in Santa Barbara. “Amigos,” “Wind Star” and

“Gran Cru”. We sailed most of the day and then assembled at

3

the Santa Barbara Yacht Club for dinner and storytelling of our adventures on the water. We had a total of 18 members for dinner, see our picture below. Our last event of the year is our cruise in La Paz, Mexico. We have a total of 24 members and 4 non-members who will be flying into Cabo San Lucas on November 10th to prepare and organize our boats for our 7 day adventure on the “Sea of Cortez”. We will be departing from La Paz and heading north to “Espirito Santo Island”, with lots of coves to explore, and hikes to beautiful beaches. We hope to see lots of sea life when we snorkel, and when we are sailing. We will also be sailing to “San Francisco Island” which have warm aqua blue waters and lots of wildlife. I will show you pictures of our adventure in next month’s Foghorn. Stay tuned.

Happy sailing,– Lettie

Fleet News

by Kristin Rasmussen,Sail Fleet Captain

Hi Fellow Members, Congratulations to Darryl

Rundstrom and Adi Ringer with “ALLEGRA”!

The final two days of ocean racing this year, September 24th and October 1st were an incredible finish to the 2017 Avila Cup Series. If you haven’t been following the series you’ve been missing out on a thrilling year. It really could not have been any closer between Darryl Rundstrom and Adi Ringer with “Allegra” and Simon Smith with “Diligence”. Not just the series, but most races.

Doug Anthony with “Sea Symphony” proved to be a great competitor making every point important. The series score points total between Darryl Rundstrom and Adi Ringer with “Allegra” and Simon Smith with “Diligence” was the same after the final race and the winner determined by tie-breaker (as stated in the 2017-2020 Racing Rules of Sailing).

Thank you to race committee volunteers Leanne Drummond, Jeff and Mary Bucher, Margie Valine and Kathleen O’Neill for their excellent work (and picture taking) on the last two race days.

Please plan on celebrating the San Luis Yacht Club’s sailors at the 2017 Awards Celebration Dinner on Wet Wednesday November 8th.

See you all there,

—Kristin

Rear Commodore Report

by Barry Stewart,Rear Commodore

Ahoy SLYC. As we enter winter and approach 2018, you are

invited to attend the General Membership Meeting 11/3, both to vote, and to familiarize yourselves with the incoming board members. Many of you will get reminder phone calls, and all of you should be getting the weekly “scuttlebutt” announcements.

Late in the year, we sometimes have a difficult time putting on even the simplest events, as most of you have completed your annual service minimums. its often a last minute effort to obtain cooks, bar hosts and helpers etc. for the remainder of the season.

Some of the proposed measures firm up the member in good standing requirements, I personally am not supportive of more restrictive rules. Similarly, members that only do the bare minimum and also expect engaging social and boating activities, likely deserve any disappointment they experience. Our club has long been a volunteer organization, and few could honestly say they joined without knowing that. I would like to see any rule or bylaw change that makes mandatory advance duty signup, unnecessary, but I understand why some would prefer otherwise.

Our Club provides myriad activities, including boater education, sailing lessons, club boat, racing, bareboat cruises, visitor mooring plus support for local organizations like the aquarium, Cal Poly and the pier committee and numerous

“ocean adjacent” activities. As organizing these things will likely be part of my duties next year, I am hoping somewhat selfishly, that you will rise to the challenge early and make beating the bushes on behalf of the club schedule less necessary.

On the Aquatic side, rockfishing in greater than 40 fathoms is closed for the rest of the year, but quality catches are to be had in shallower waters when weather is favorable. Ask me if you need details.

We are keeping “SLO Sloop” on her mooring a bit longer, due to the return of Cuesta College Sailing classes, and will schedule our maintenance and cleaning and eventual return her to the mooring based on weather etc. Our boat committee has identified a couple of desirable larger boats representing possibilities for an eventual upgrade, but nothing has quite met enough of the particulars our membership has indicated will enliven the recreational sailing program. We hope to resume club boat familiarizations in spring, to get as many as are interested qualified to sail our club boat and provide a corps of yachtsmen justifying a larger vessel sooner rather than later. We don’t plan on placing “SLO Sloop” in Lopez lake due to high costs, effortand minimum member useage. We hope to be able to sail her at Avila late winter and early spring instead.

The SLYC “Sea of Cortez Cruise” is well subscribed, reportedly with 6 plus yachts, manned by some dozens of avid and advancing sailors, set to broaden their horizons in nautical style. I eagerly await the stories when they return. Thanks to our Cruising Captain for another great sailing schedule. The same things that got our club started can keep her running smoothly and shipshape if everyone exerts that extra bit of effort. We hope to resume club boat familiarizations in spring, to get as many as are interested qualified to sail our club boat and provide a corps of yachtsmen justifying a larger vessel sooner rather than later.

Nautically yours, —Barry

Pale Kai Outrigger

Pale Kai Outrigger has been around since 1996 offering an ocean experience that includes fitness, team building, competition and Hawaiian culture. Our goal has always been to promote the sport by giving people the opportunity to experience the ocean in a way that connects healthy living to an appreciation of our wonderful coast.

This year, we had several crews successfully compete in the Southern California Outrigger Association (SCORA) races that ended with the Catalina Challenge in September. Now that the season is over, we are looking forward to next year and developing new crews. As part of that effort, we move our club to Morro Bay for the winter and bring on new paddlers. I f you’re looking for a new challenge and want to experience the ocean in a completely different

way, come out and give it a try. We offer instruction to all age groups, provide paddles and a safe learning environment. Check out our website (palekai.org) for details. You can also get a sense of the paddling culture and race scene on the SCORA.org website.

Hope to see you on the beach...SLYC Club Member, Jeff Blauer
