ESE SPECIALIST

SUMMARY: Responsible for overseeing the ESE program for students on caseload, including developing and implementing IEPs; providing ESE services to students in general education classrooms and pullout/push in settings; consulting and collaborating with teachers and administrators to ensure IEPs are implemented and students’ needs are met. As a teacher, the ESE specialist teaches by creating a program and an environment favorable to learning and personal growth and consistent with the school’s classical curriculum and instruction methods by encouraging students to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to obtain a good foundation for continuous growth and development; by providing students with experiences which integrate the various dimensions of learning; by establishing effective rapport with students and their parents.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

EDUCATING STUDENTS * Participates in the development and implementation of the school’s program of instruction.

* Participates as a member of the team planning and/or conducting initial evaluations and eligibility determinations for students suspected of having a disability. * Plans and implements a program of study that meets the individual needs and abilities of students and complies with Florida Department of Education Standards and the St Johns Classical Academy goals and objectives and individual student IEPs. * Coordinates, facilitates and participates in all IEP team meetings and reviews. * Provides tutorial assistance to ESE students as called for in their IEPs.* Provides technical assistance in implementing the EH affective curriculum and accessing available resources. MANAGING STUDENT BEHAVIOR * Establishes and maintains standards of appropriate student behavior and discipline to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom and assists in its maintenance campus wide. * Provides and maintains a safe and supervised environment in the classroom and on the school grounds. * Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and abilities of students. * Provides assistance to administrators and teachers in identifying and implementing behavioral intervention and crisis prevention strategies for ESE students.

EVALUATING STUDENT PROGRESS * Evaluates the learning progress of students on a regular basis, including reporting progress on IEP goals as required. * Prescribes effective learning programs and initiates referrals to appropriate personnel when concerns arise. * Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.

PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATIONS * Establishes and maintain open lines of communication with students and parents concerning students’ academic, social, and behavioral progress. * Cooperates with professional staff and support personnel in assessing and helping students with health, attitude, learning, and behavioral problems. * Communicate and cooperate with other professional staff in academic and personal growth areas.

MANAGEMENT * Selects and requests appropriate books and instructional materials and maintains required inventory records. * Provides directions and materials for substitute teachers. Plans for and supervises classroom aides, guests, and volunteers. * Prepares and maintains accurate and complete records and reports as required by law, state directives, school policy, and administrative regulations.

EDUCATION AND LICENSURE * Possess, or eligible to receive, a Florida Educator’s certificate in an area of Exceptional Student Education. * Successful work experience dealing directly with students with behavioral and/or emotional problems.

GUIDANCE COUNSELOR/ACADEMIC DEAN

SUMMARY: To plan, develop, and implement a comprehensive counseling program to address the academic, career, and personal/social goals for all students.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

* Assists in the registration and placement of students. * Administers group standardized tests in accordance with the school testing program.* Provides personal, social, behavioral, and/or academic counseling to identified individuals or small groups. * Oversees the provision of career development opportunities for students. * Administers initial screenings and coordinates the referral process for identification and placement of students with special needs. * Provides appropriate consultation with parents on all issues related to student success. * Provides appropriate consultation and staff development to school personnel as needed. * Consult and collaborate with teachers, staff, and parents on understanding and meeting the needs of all students. * Assists with referrals to other service providers and outside agencies. * Develops 504 plans and health care plans as needed. * May serve as consultant for ESE and ELL screenings.* Maintains access to current information regarding community resources. * Coordinates district and state-mandated assessments and provides assistance in the interpretation of results to parents, students, and other school staff. * Provides or assists with student orientation. * Evaluates the guidance program on a continuing basis. * Consults with school personnel on issues regarding student discipline. * Assists in the orientation of new faculty and staff members. * Assists with parent/teacher conferences as requested. * Oversees the proper maintenance of student records as required by applicable policies, regulations and procedures. * Attends and participates in faculty meetings.

* Accepts responsibility for extra-curricular activities as assigned. * Attends professional meetings and staff development activities. * Performs other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Director.

EDUCATION AND LICENSURE * Posses or eligible to receive a valid Florida Educator’s Certificate with certification in guidance and counseling K-12. * Familiarity with the school’s curriculum and mission.* Firm grasp of the essentials of Exceptional Student education.* Counseling skills in a range of diverse needs, including college/career information and mediation/conflict resolution.
