At the BCITO we are always delighted to celebrate success, but we know that our trainees rely on the hard work, commitment and skill of the employers who support their training. Congratulations to all the winners!

As the industry continues to get busy it is timely to talk about pride in the industry and about recognising excellence.

The BCITO is in the midst of a series of awards and “apprentice of the year” competitions which are designed to do just that; to engender pride in the industry and to recognise excellence. It is no surprise then that this BC News is focussed on these and on celebrating the people who are deserving of this recognition.

In this edition we get the opportunity to recognise achievers from a range of specialist trades while across the country the BCITO is holding a series of regional events as we work towards the final of our biggest annual event, the RMB Carters Apprentice of the Year (carpentry).

The construction industry has a proud history of seeing apprentices who win these prizes going on to greater achievements in the industry. Importantly for us all we recognise that these events are not ends in themselves but are just one component in the development of the industry leaders of tomorrow. Increasingly the prize packages include further training and development opportunities for the winners.

One of the many great things about the construction industry is that it is not afraid of competition. We believe it’s important that the entrants in these events compete with the many other talented individuals in their trade, and actually demonstrate that they have what it takes to be a winner.

We like to start them early too! Right now out in the Secondary Schools we are running the “Buildability Challenge” where teams of secondary schools compete to prove they are the best of the prospective talent awaiting entry into the industry. When they turn up to a prospective employer with that achievement in their CV they deserve a second look. The CVs of all of the entrants in our various awards are similarly enhanced.

So read this BC News and comfort yourself that the future of our industry is in good hands. We are proud to recognise the achievements of all these winners and equally proud of an industry and an amazing group of employers who have been part of these individual journeys. All of these people are the same in that someone “gave them a go” in this industry by employing them, training them and mentoring them as both employees and trades people. How good is that!

Entries have now closed for this year’s competition and we’re thrilled to announce that it’s gearing up to be one of the most exciting comps we’ve seen.

With an amazing 30% increase in the number of entries received, 134 carpentry apprentices from across the country will strut their stuff, swing their hammers and test their trade knowledge in the largest apprentice comp in the country.

“When your apprentice succeeds so does your business. Who wouldn’t want a top class tradesman to work alongside every day?” Ben Redmond (Employer and

Mentor of Bill Harkness, 2013 national Apprentice of the Year)

“This is something each of these finalists can put on their resume. It sets them apart from others when applying for jobs in the future.” Paul Mitchell

(2013 BCITO Judge)

“Apprentice of the Year is a huge name to have on your back, and it stands for a lot. I think the recognition I’m getting from the competition

is really setting me up for the rest of my career. My name is out there now and that, in itself, is invaluable.” Bill Harkness (2013

National Winner Apprentice of the Year)

“We are extremely supportive of any endeavour that celebrates apprentices going the extra mile. We’re looking forward to seeing the

talent at this year’s competition.” Ruma Karaitiana (BCITO CEO)

“It is a pleasure to support the carpentry apprentices who take part in the competition and who continue to prove themselves as our

construction industry’s future leaders.” Warwick Quinn (CEO, Registered Master Builders)

GETTING STARTED ON THE PATH TO SUCCESS

BEING A GOOD APPRENTICEAccording to Business New Zealand, the top 10 skills employers look for are:

> planning and organisational skills> initiative and a can-do attitude> problem-solving skills> good work habits and

independence> health and safety skills

RATE YOURSELFAsk yourself these questions:

> Do you have the necessary abilities and skills?

> How soon can you become productive? Are you a fast learner?

> Are you able to work unsupervised, use your initiative and work confidently under pressure?

> Is your work accurate and high-quality?> Are you organised and able to

achieve goals?> Are you motivated?

For the building industry, we know that your boss wants you to turn up on time, be keen to learn and work hard. Do that and you can’t go too wrong!

> communication skills> customer service skills -

in person, on the phone etc.> ability to work well in a team> literacy and numeracy skills> confidence learning about

and using new technology

> Do you work for the best interests of your employer?

> Are you dependable, reliable and trustworthy?

> Do you fit in with the rest of the team?

> Do you have a good attitude?

> Does your presentation and appearance represent the company well?

SO HOW CAN YOU GET UP AND RUNNING FASTER?Thinking about these things and having the right attitude will get you through your qualification sooner, and you’ll learn more along the way.

Remember, your BCITO Training Advisor is there to help you get through this - you are not alone.

They say advice is free, but the important thing to remember is that sometimes it can be the most valuable thing you take out of any situation. When you’re working towards a qualification, getting good advice can be the difference between repeating your mistakes or learning from them. On June 25th we asked you (by way of the BCITO Facebook page) what advice you would give to an aspiring apprentice.

Taking advice at face(book) value

Harry Palmer Don’t do benders then go to work.

Mat Krammer Keep chipping away at buying tools.

Ethan Ogle Smoko for the boys goes a long way..

Brodie Reid Don’t be afraid to ask questions and give everything a go! Your apprenticeship is the time

to make mistakes and learn from them (hopefully).

Jordan Tira Measure twice, cut once.

Jeremy Langman All you need to bring to work are your hammer and your manners - the rest you can keep at home.

Taylor Foster You can never ask too many questions.

Robert Torstonson work hard, learn harder.

Dubz Locc always blow on your pie.

Gerard Mackle If you’re not sure, keep asking till you get it.

James Check A hammer is for nailing a nail in to a piece if wood - not for twirling around.

Anne Hallett Don’t be afraid to ask questions and to ask again if you don’t understand. Sometimes your boss may

need to explain building terms to you - ASK!

Michael Mansfield Never assume.

Sheldon Beckett Don’t be lazy, look for something to do instead of just standing there and keep ya phone in the van.

Chris H. McCloy There are no dumb questions; don’t rush your apprenticeship and do your book work EVERYDAY;

listen to everyone and take the best of everything; learn from your mistakes and most importantly, don’t buy crap tools.

Trent Watters Turn up on time and ready to work; put 120% in every day; work hard - play hard

Mike Hijgemann Focus on the job; ignore the bulls**t; try harder; do your best - the rewards are great!

Kelly O’Hara Turn up 10 minutes before start time (not hung over); make sure you get enough sleep; eat properly and

drink water... Do these things and you will have a better chance to be healthy enough to meet the physical demands of the job and have a little more hope in retaining information - not to mention it makes for a better work - safe environment.

Peter Bassett Retain your drivers license.

Glenn Duncan (Group Manager Apprentice Training) Have a career plan or dream that stretches beyond just doing the

apprenticeship, whether it is to climb the corporate construction ladder or own your own business.

Greg Durkin (Group Manager Specialist Trades) Make the most of the journey through your training by having pride in

yourself and respecting the people you work with every day. Always be the very best you can possibly be at everything you try and do

Bruce Horsley (Group Manager Support Services) You have started a journey that is limited only by your

imagination. Be guided now by your employer and work colleagues, but have a personal goal to achieve at an even higher standard.

Andrew Kear (Group Manager Standards Leadership) Get hold of the BCITO booklet called ‘Taking Charge of Your

Apprenticeship’ and read it carefully. There are great hints in there about how on-job learning and assessment are managed.

WANT TO TAKE YOUR CAREER TO THE NEXT LEVEL?The BCITO now have National Certificates that could be just what you are looking for. If you’re in a supervisory role, there are qualifications that can take your career to new heights.

The National Certificate in Construction Trades (Supervisor) (Level 4) covers topics around key supervisory skills including decision-making, job planning and programming, tendering for new work, managing people and job sites. To be eligible you will need to be working in a supervisory role and have a trade qualification already. This course is done through the BCITO whilst working in the industry. No classrooms involved!

The National Certificate in Construction Trades (Main Contract Supervision) (Level 5) assesses the knowledge and skills that are necessary to be a main contract supervisor in the construction industry. Topics covered include supervision of sub contractors, procurement, principles of weatherproofing and construction methods. You will need to have completed the Level 4 Construction Trades (Supervisor) qualification or have equivalent knowledge and skills. This course is done through the BCITO whilst working in the industry.

PLACEMAKERS SCHOLARSHIPS - P.A.S.SThe PlaceMakers Apprentice Scholarship Scheme [P.A.S.S] was initiated in 2013. The P.A.S.S scholarship offers successful apprentices mentoring and support from their local PlaceMakers team and covers all BCITO related fees as they work towards achieving their national certificate.

In 2014, PlaceMakers awarded ten P.A.S.S scholarships to BCITO registered apprentices.

Congratulations to:

Both national certificates are self-paced, computer-based learning packages - which mean you learn on the job and study when it works for you and your lifestyle. Depending on the work you are doing, you should be able to gather and show evidence of your skills and knowledge through many of the day-to-day activities that you carry out.

No box of books this time around - the programme is supplied electronically, so access to a computer is essential.

You will have a BCITO Training Advisor to support and guide you along the way and help you achieve your goal.
