Since SAT’s are right around the corner, we’ve included some SAT study tips!

Good Luck & Enjoy!

Essay Tips1. Use your flagrant vocabulary words only as perfectly appropriate. Graders would rather see a handful of expertly used vocabulary words than dozens of poorly used, clearly memorized terms.

To make these “buzzwords” sound more like vernacular, try incorporating the words into your daily conversations and homework!2. Write legibly – graders will not spend very long trying to decipher sloppy handwriting.

If you’ve had teachers mention that you have sloppy handwriting, or even if you consider your handwriting messy, go ahead and practice writing more clearly now – so it’s more natural while writing your essay!3. Follow the basic approach of writing an essay, as you have limited space to demonstrate your skills to the graders.

Intro with thesis, supporting body with clear evidence, and conclusion supporting thesis. That basic!

Mathematics TipsCheck out sites like the official SAT practice

questions online, and be sure to brush up on

more advanced math questions in the areas

covered (think: geometry, algebra 2, algebra 1,

basic math computations, what did you struggle

with in each, and then go from there)!

Critical Reading- “Make it personal”- try incorporating analytical skills into your daily life, as well as tying your critical

reading skills into other parts of your day. Check out the questions on the SAT website, and try FreeRice.com!

TRiO Day - Mario GerardiTRIO Day this year was very interesting! Us UB'ers arrived at the

Sheraton hotel in Framingham, Massachusetts to be greeted by tons of other UB'ers from around New England, and we participated in a variety of different activities and events. We went on a college tour (in which the college you went to was randomly assigned; I went to Boston College) and had a group of current students tell us about their experiences, as well as the admissions counselor.

That night we had dinner and a dance, which was very loud and deafening, but was also extremely fun! It was a great experience to be able to get to know other UB'ers and to see the diversity of UB'ers around the New England area.

The next morning, we had a college fair and an hour long seminar, which were both very informative and helpful. In my seminar, we talked about the '4.0 that really matters' and about financial needs. The college fair had tons of colleges from around the New England region, including UMF! After all of that was over, we had some guest speakers and UB alumni talk to us about their experiences being in college/trying to find the right college and then we headed home. Overall, TRIO Day was, in my opinion, a fantastic time.
