Energy efficiency labeling to meet the ErP Directive
Viessmann supports market partners with service package
From September 26th, 2015, it will be mandatory for trade
professionals to include efficiency ratings in their quotes for heat
generators, DHW generators, storage cylinders, and for entire
systems in order to adhere to the EU guideline. They will also be
required to specify the efficiency class of products in brochures
and advertisements and to attach energy efficiency labels to units
on display. Viessmann has created a comprehensive service
package to help their market partners meet this requirement: product labels for the individual products, a universal label for the factories for package solutions put
together from the package price list, delivery service of universal labels for systems that trade
professionals configure themselves using Viessmann
components, label-generating software for trade professionals.
Product labelsFrom the September deadline onwards, product labels and fact
sheets will be available for all heat generators, DHW generators,
and storage cylinders. The efficiency rating, which is based on the
relevant EU regulations, will be specified on the product labels and
the fact sheets as well as attached to the relevant products. For
heat generators, efficiency will be rated on a scale ranging from G
to A++ and depicted on said scale by a black arrow. Specifications
will also be included on output and noise emissions. The labels for

CHP units will include an additional symbol for power generation.
The labels for heat pumps will show two efficiency ratings: one for
the flow temperature of 55°C and another for 35°C. In addition,
specifications on output will be provided for three climate zones
(symbolized by a small EU map with three differently colored
areas) for heat pumps. There will therefore be six different values
on the labels: two flow temperatures for each of these three
climate zones. DHW generators and storage cylinders will also
have an own label with a scale rating efficiency from G to A.
Universal labelsThe purpose of the universal label is to provide a comprehensive
statement on the energy efficiency of an entire heating system.
This is calculated based on the different product fact sheets – for
example, by taking into account the values for the heat generator,
controller, storage cylinder, and solar collectors. The relevant
calculation methods are set out in the EU regulations. In the future,
trade professionals will be obliged to specify the overall energy
efficiency of an entire system to their customers in their quotes and
provide the label when installing the system. The Viessmann
market partners have the advantage that all of the Viessmann
components are compatible and therefore function perfectly with
one another. In addition, they do not have to put any resources
into creating the universal label, as calculating and providing the
label is an integral part of Viessmann's service package.
Top ranking for integrated systems with Viessmann product rangeThe universal label for an overall system can achieve a better
efficiency rating than the system's individual components, which is
why the scale on the label goes up to A+++. A system with a
primary heat generator rated as A can therefore be rated as A++
when combined with a solar thermal system rated as A+ or with an
additional heat pump. This rating system therefore clearly

highlights the appeal of bivalent and multivalent systems. The
Viessmann comprehensive range of products contains perfectly
matched system components for all areas of application and all
fuel sources. In addition, superordinate control systems leverage
the efficiency potential of different system configurations.
Viessmann packages labeled at the factoriesFor pre-configured system solutions made up of components from
the package price list, trade professionals do not have any
workload creating the universal label. Viessmann will deliver
finished universal labels and data sheets for these systems so that
they can be directly included in the quote. Combination units,
compact systems, and pre-configured packages with DHW
cylinders specify the energy efficiency ratings for room heating and
DHW generation.
Products delivered without labels before the deadlineAlthough heating products placed on the market before September
26th, 2015, will not have energy efficiency labels, they can still be
sold, installed, and commissioned after this date. Trade
professionals can therefore be sure that they will be able to sell
and install deliveries they received before the deadline or products
from stock.
Labels are not initially required for domestic ventilation systems
and biomass boilers. Experts at the EU Commission are currently
working on regulations for these products. Energy efficiency labels
will probably not be introduced for them until 2016 or 2017. In
principle, solar components such as collectors and solar pump
assemblies do not require product labels. As solar heating is
always combined with other heat generators, the EU regulations
only require product data sheets, which are then used to determine
the universal label.

Legal basisThe purpose of the new, uniform pan-European energy efficiency
label is to introduce a benchmark and decision-making aid for
building contractors and renovators buying new heating systems.
The legal basis for this is provided by the Energy Labeling
Directive 2010/30/EU, the ErP Directive (Energy-Related Products
Directive), and the EU regulations:
2013/811/EU on the energy labeling of room heating
systems, combined heat and power generation units, and
universal systems. These include boilers with outputs up to
70 kW for oil and gas, heat pumps, CHP units, and
integrated systems with solar collectors and controllers.
2013/812/EU on the energy labeling of DHW generators
DHW cylinders with a capacity of up to 500 liters and
integrated systems.
