ALUMNI OVERVIEWALUMNI OVERVIEW RAMAKRISHNA MISSION VIDYALAYARAMAKRISHNA MISSION VIDYALAYA

Introduction: Seventy-four long years of hard work have indeed, borne delectable fruits.Today Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya is a name to be reckoned with. The dynamic ethosof Vidyalya. is distilled from the vision of Swami Vivekananda, monks of RamakrishnaOrder, the selflessness and dedication of the founder Dr. T. S. Avinashilingam, dedicatedteachers, generous well wishers and our enterprising students who have all played a partin shaping the Vidyalaya. It is an institution par excellence in many aspects. We are nowa proud family of Vidyalaya. As envisaged by the great Swami Vivekananda, the RamakrishnaMission Vidyalaya is striving hard to impart man-making and character-building educationto the students, and trying to inculcate in them self-reliance, self control, selflessness andsuch allied qualities that goes to develop character.

Reminiscence: I joined M.A., in Social Work in the year 1975 in the Sri RamakrishnaMission Vidyalaya Arts College belong to the first batch student of the Department ofSocial Work. Prior to the commencement of the Social Work Department, Rural Collegeof Higher Education offered the Diploma in Rural Service. The Department of Social Workwas in started 1975 with 23 students and four staff.

Academic programme: The M.A.(Social Work) programme was designed to enablestudents to deepen their understanding the social problems and social development. Inaddition to acquainting students with the issues, policies and programmes connected withplanned community development, the course also aims towards developing competenciesfor ensuring effective delivery of services to the needy and handicapped section of ourpopulation.

Committed Professors: Dr. K. Kulandaivelu Anna was the Principal of the College. Prof.T.N. Rajarathinam Anna was the Head of the Department. He has very rich experience inRural Higher Education. He taught the subject ‘Man and Society'. Still his lectures likeSocial Change is ringing in my ears. He always quoted research notes like Dr. M.N.Srinivasand Mr. Scarlet Epstein ‘Dalena and Wahela village'. Dr. P.A. Gurusamy Anna taught meResearch paper; Dr. J. Paranjyothi Ramalingam Anna taught about Human Growth andDevelopment. I would like to salute the stalwarts.

Specialisation: In my batch only one Specialisation subject was offered namely CommunityDevelopment (Rural and Urban). We the first batch students met Swamiji and RespectedAyya Avl for the change of specialization. They refused to change the specialisation. Atthat time we felt very bad. Now I feel very proud of having studied the CommunityDevelopment as my area of specialisaton. All my friends are doing very well in this field.

Field Work: Field Work formed an important part in the training programme. throughoutthe year. The Department attached great importance to field work, which is expected todevelop in the student a sense of responsibility and proper work habits. A large number ofwell-established welfare agencies, public and voluntary, rural and urban areas were visitedas part of observation visit. Some of the agencies were G. Kuppusamy Naidu Hospital,Government School for Deaf and Dumb, Press Colony, Rotary Orthopedic Rehabilitation

Centre, Government Institute of Rehabilitation (Beggars Home) Vinnapalli, and StateInstitute of Rural Development, Bhavani Sagar, Thambu School near Press Colony. Prof.A.C. Chockanathan guided us with utmost care and perfection. I organised variety ofprogrammes for the students, parents and teachers in the field work agencies.

We visited Palyaa Pudur village and organised youth club and conducted the Healthawareness programme. We were also involved in Community organisation and socialeducation in the rural areas. The Supervision, direction and guidance of the staff membershelped us to integrate the theory and practice of Social Work.

Study Tour: As part of the course we went to Bombay and Hyderabad on a study tour.Still the places like Dharavi Slum, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, College of SocialWork and National Institute of Rural Development are in the memory. I. P Anna accompaniedus and I had the privilege to be the leader of the students' team.

National Level Seminars: I was fortunate enough to attend the National level Seminar onEradication of Poverty and Rural Employment organised by Respected Ayya Avl.

Special Lecture: During the year 1975-77 Staff club organised series of special lectures. We were invited to participate in the programmes. It widens perspective of the knowledgeof the students. The lectures of Dr.Gopalan of the Co-operation Department, especiallyDr.G.Venkatesan (Former Principal of Arts' College), were very attractive and interesting.

Gurupuja: First Sunday of January, is celebrated as the Birthday of Bhagavan SriRamakrishna (Gurupuja). Community feeding, cultural and educational exhibitions, bhajans, lecturers of eminent people were the special features of the Gurupuja. At that time theVice-President of India Mr.B.D. Jatti attended the programme. I was assigned the task oflooking after the chapel stall by giving tokens. This taught me to lead the life in a humble way.

Simple life with High thinking: Swamiji (Secretary of the College) and Dr (Late). T.S.Avinashilingam were model Social Workers. To lead a simple life with high thinking is themain lesson of their life.

Prayer: Morning prayer every day and one-hour spiritual prayer cum bhajans once in aweek really developed the spirituality in my life. Swamiji's lecture about the life of SwamiVivekananda gave the moral courage to face the life.

Uniform: Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya is a unique college which strictly adheres to thepolicy of uniform dress (White and White). It also enforces dress code.

Conclusion: Deep rooted in patriotism, devotion and character building is the virtue of theRamakrishna Mission Vidyalaya. This made indelible mark in life of the Social Workstudents. We are proud of our Vidyalaya and the Department of Social Work .It transformedmen endowed with vision and competence to face a competitive and complex future. Thequalities like academically alertness, morallness sound and social commitment among ourstudents are the matter of pride and joy.

Memorable Moments

Sri Navaratnasamy Karthikeyan, Lec tu rer , Depar tment o f Phys ics , Open Un ivers i t y o f Sr i Lanka , Nawala , Nugegoda, Sr i Lanka (Academic s ta f fo f the Depar tment s ince May 1993)

I consider the opportunity to study at Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya, Coimbatore, from 1984 to 1989 as the most important part of my life. I wasvery fortunate to (i) have the personal guidance of Srimat Swami Somanandaji Maharaj throughout my nine-year stay in India, (ii) meet MostRespected Ayya almost every alternate Friday in 1984/86 period at the request of Ayya and (iii) have Srimat Swami Atmaghananandaji Maharaj asour Secretary & Warden at both Shivananda & Arts College. The training and guidance I received at Vidyalaya for five years, especially from theabove three and many other dedicated teachers (Annas), in a serene atmosphere cultivated many good qualities and rare skills in me, and Swami

Vivekananda’s teachings molded me into a fearless – voluntary social worker.

After my return to Sri Lanka in April 1993, since later part of 1993, with the encouragement of Srimat Swami Atmaghananandaji Maharaj [who served as Swami-in-charge of Ramakrishna Mission (Ceylon Branch) from 1991 to 2007], I am spending most of my time (apart from university/official commitments) for voluntaryservices to our needy people.

Again I am fortunate to associate with the activities of the Ramakrishna Mission in Sri Lanka, since 1994 to this date. I served as a voluntary teacher at the SundayReligious School, Colombo, and assisted in (i) conducting numerous youth camps & spiritual retreats; (ii) conducting more than 200 free medical camps; (iii) bringingout many publications (text, audio & video); (iv) implementing many social welfare projects. I am also serving as a voluntary resource person for regular youth training/ personality development programmes conducted by a few other Hindu Organisations. I am also serving as a trauma Counsellor since 2004, especially to those withHindu religious background and affected by HIV / AIDS, after receiving special training twice in Thailand and once in Bangladesh as a Hindu nominee by UnitedNations and Ministry of Health respectively. I have written an awareness article in “Sri Ramakrishna Vijayam” - September 2005 issue and in “Prabudha Bharatha”– December 2007 issue.

In parallel to my voluntary social welfare and youth training activities, I was able to contribute to the academic field and hold top positions in scientific bodies in SriLanka (where racial discrimination is very systematic and prevail at extreme levels) at relatively young age, mainly due to the hard and superb training received atRamakrishna Mission Vidyalaya, Coimbatore and also at the Department of Nuclear Physics, University of Madras.

His profile: He completed his +2 in the Vidyalaya Swami Shivananda Higher Secondary School (1984-86) & B.Sc., (Physics) in the Vidyalaya College of Arts andScience (1986-89). He completed his PG with First Class from Department of Nuclear Physics, University of Madras, Chennai (1989-1991) & M.Phil. (NuclearPhysics) (1991-93). He is now the member of the Council of the Institute of Physics, Sri Lanka, Sri Lankan Physics Olympiad Competition Committee, and InteractiveEducational Material (Science) Evaluation Team of the National Science Foundation (NSF); Treasurer of Professional body of Physicists in Sri Lanka; GeneralSecretary of the Sri Lanka Association for Advancement of Science (SLAAS - is the premier organization of Scientists in Sri Lanka); Team Leader of the Sri LankanTeam for International Physics Olympiad Competition - 2006 held in Singapore. He was a member of the International Physics Olympiad Committee in 2006 & 2007.A resource person to the 'Nuclear Knowledge Management Programme' of the International Atomic Energy Agency (Vienna) in collaboration with local and regionalbodies.

Sri V. Arunkumar, B.Sc., MCA., S/o. S. Viswanathan & Mrs. P. Sumathi Viswanathan, is our alumnus, who completed MCA degree in our College of Arts andScience (Self-financing wing) in the year 2006. He has written a book “TPA (SMS) Through Mobile” - Think, Plan and Act through Mobile, for Universal Peace. He has oystered all the gems of golden quotations of great men in a compact form of coded speech in the SMS way.

Dr. P.V.N. Murthy, Ph.D., is an alumnus of our College of Arts and Science. We are happy to inform that a giant leap by Inda to restore andrevive its place at the pinnacle of glory based on path breaking discovery of ‘Lingua Maths’ (Mathematics of Languages) by him. He uncoveredseveral theorems that have resided in the Vedas under the guise of hymns and shlokas, over the coruse of the last 2 decades. This led to thecreation of Linguamaths -- a mathematical code that helps trans-literate words from any language into their intrinsic meaning. His bookRamayana Rahasya gave the world its first glimpse into this, with illustrations from astronomy. His numerous lectures, abroad as well as all overIndia, evoked keen interest and generated genuine belief in the possibilities thereof. Formerly Systems Manager, Air-India’s Computer Centre,Mumbai, and founder of “Vedic Science Research Institute (VEDSRI)” at Hosur, Tamilnadu. ASWIN (Ancient Scientific Wisdom - International)

a monthly magazine is to be edited and published by him from April 2009 to designate the ideas of VEDSRI.
