Exploring persistence in humour: Cartoons and comic dialogue in the late Ottoman Empire
SAMPLE PRIMARY TEXTS
The following cartoons and dialogues are examples of some of those that I will discuss during the seminar. They are taken from three late Ottoman publications, which were very different in their aims and outlooks: the radical and irreverent Hayal; the occasionally risqué but firmly establishment Karagöz Salnamesi; and the semi-official educational magazine, Nevsal-i Marifet.
Cartoon 1Karagöz Salnamesi (1912)
Baba - Oğlum butün kitablarını mektebe getiriyorsun, demek ki artık çalışacaksın…!Çocuk - Hayır baba, üzerine oturmak için getiriyorum, çünkü sıralar pek alçak…!
Father - My boy, you're taking all your books to school! That means you'll do some work at last…!Child - No dad, I'm taking them to sit down on them because the desks are too low…!
Cartoon 2Hayal (1874)
Panayire azimet … Panayirden avdet
Going to the fair … Returning from the fair
Cartoon 3Karagöz Salnamesi (1910)
- Komşucuğum. Penceren açık iken bu kiyafetle nasıl duruyorsun…!Herkesin odasına ne karışıyorsun? Görmek istemiyorsan gözlerini kapa!
- My neighbour - how can you stand in this garb whilst your window is open…!- Why are you all peering into the room? If you don't want to look, shut your eyes!
Comical dialogue 1

Köylü karisi - (Ağlayarak) Ah Papas Efendi bu gece kuvemin vefat ettiğini haber vermeğe geldim
Papas - Vay vay..! Hangi doktoru cağırmız ediniz?Kari - (Ağlayarak) Ah! Doktora hacet yok idi Papas Efendi. Kendi kendisine oldu.
Village woman - (Weeping) Oh your reverence, I have come to give you news of my husband's death this evening.
Priest - Dear oh dear..! Which doctor did you call?Woman - (Weeping) Oh! There was no need for a doctor, your reverence. It happened by itself.

Between a doctor and his friend recovering from illness:Doctor - I was exceedingly pleased to see your recovery go so well.Friend - Yes, you saved my life, I don't know how I will be able to thank
you.Doctor - I saved your life. During your illness I left nothing wanting in
your treatment.Friend - Now I'm in your debt, eh.

İki tacirBiri - Canım birader! Mösyö Hamer, nasıldır, zenginmidir?Diğeri - Niçin soruyorsun alacağın mı var?Evvelki - Yok!
