s a public service television company, part of the Vegas PBS mission is

to use television to extend and amplify the effectiveness of organizations

seeking to advance our region. This month, we are partnering with sev-

eral community organizations to help tell the story of Southern Nevada

and create a dialogue around the important issues facing our community.

Understanding the Opioid Epidemic traces the history of the opioid crisis and

explores possible solutions. With grant funding from Anthem BlueCross BlueShield and

in partnership with the College of Southern Nevada and the Clark County Medical

Society, Vegas PBS will host a preview screening of the film and a panel discussion led

by Dr. Jerry Reeves of HealthInsight. Visit VegasPBS.org to RSVP for the January 11

screening and tune in to Vegas PBS Channel 10 on Wednesday, January 17 at 10 p.m.

to watch the complete documentary, followed by FRONTLINE: Chasing Heroin.

The 17th Annual Las Vegas Jewish Film Festival is taking place January 13-28, pro-

viding insights into Jewish identity, history and culture. Vegas PBS is sponsoring the

opening night screening of Sammy Davis Jr: I’ve Gotta Be Me.This American Masters

documentary examines Davis’ vast talent and his journey for identity through the shift-

ing tides of civil rights and racial progress. Visit lvjff.org for details.

Last year, Vegas PBS partnered with UNLV Libraries to bring viewers African

Americans: The Las Vegas Experience, a documentary on the African American expe-

rience in Las Vegas during the Civil Rights era. On Wednesday, January 17, we will

release a robust educational multi-media product based on the program. In coopera-

tion with the Equity and Diversity Education Department, Clark County School District

teachers developed curriculum for state mandated Nevada History courses using video

from the program. These resources are available online and on-demand for immediate

classroom, home school, community and/or personal education. Funding for this proj-

ect was provided in part by grants through the Institute of Museum and Library

Services and The Commission for the Las Vegas Centennial.

On Friday, January 19, Vegas PBS will host its fourth Veterans Coffee and

Conversations event for veterans and their families.Vegas PBS began this monthly con-

versation series by inviting feedback on Ken Burns’The Vietnam War and continues to

provide an open forum for discussion about timely topics of concern to veterans.

Vegas PBS’ community health outreach service, the Desert Meadows Area Health

Education Center (AHEC), will host a Clark County Medical Society Continuing Medical

Education (CME) workshop on suicide prevention on Tuesday, January 23. Desert

Meadows AHEC’s community engagement initiatives include providing quality contin-

uing education for healthcare professionals and fostering educational interactions

between medical professionals and community members.

Your generous membership support helps fund these important documentaries, and

our strong community partnerships allow us to leverage your support into expanded

educational opportunities that go beyond the broadcast. As we begin this new year,

we thank you for your support and hope you’ll join us for these and other community

education events throughout the year.

he content department at Vegas PBS responds to all viewer inquiries. Some viewers

contact us through our website, others prefer to call, and we occasionally receive

handwritten letters. We appreciate them all. As content director, I review the

inquiries monthly, and look for areas where we can improve our service to you.

Over the years we’ve had many requests for more adult programming on Channel 10 during

the weekdays. Those requests have grown since the January 2017 launch of our VEGAS PBS

KIDS channel, which provides additional noncommercial educational content for the youngest

members of our community. We’ve seen significant growth of this new channel over the past year,

and are pleased that so many families are

benefitting from the 24/7 broadcast and

streaming service.

With the success of the VEGAS PBS KIDS

channel, we are reducing the number of

hours of PBS Kids programming on Channel

10 and are adding three hours of adult con-

tent weekdays from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

We’ve invested member dollars to acquire

broadcast rights to some new titles, as well

as viewer favorites that we hope you’ll enjoy.

Each weekday is themed, with similar pro-

gramming in each three-hour block.

Mondays are filled with mysteries, including

Father Brown, The Doctor Blake Mysteries

and New Tricks. Tuesdays are more light-

hearted with an hour of The Great British

Baking Show, followed by Ballykissangel, a

fun drama starring a young Stephen

Thompkinson, and an hour of comedy, featuring one new series, Moone Boy, and one classic

series, Waiting for God. Wednesdays are designed to provide armchair travel experiences with

Rick Steves’ Europe, Samantha Brown’s Places to Love, Globe Trekker and Finding Your

Roots, which offers personal history exploration. Thursdays are themed around the natural

world and its creatures, featuring titles from the Nature series, alongside specials like Wild

Venice, Gorongosa Park, and Big Pacific. Fridays are filled with science-themed programming,

including NOVA, Time Scanners, and standalone specials like The Comet Encounter and

Hawking.

Another change for the new year is an “extended” prime-time schedule, with an extra hour of

programming each weeknight at 11 p.m. Some of these titles will also be scheduled in our new

weekday adult programming lineup, for those without DVRs who may find 11 p.m. a bit too late

for their viewing habits.

Our viewer services team looks forward to hearing from you, with what you like about the new

schedule, as well as what suggestions you have to make it even better.

A Lincoln Center Special: NY Philharmonic NewYear’s Eve: Bernstein onBroadwaySunday, December 31 at 9 p.m.Ring in 2018 with the New York Philharmonic as

they celebrate the 100th birthday of the late

Leonard Bernstein, its fabled musical director

from 1958 to 1969. From the dynamic rhythms

of “West Side Story” to the brashness of

sailors on leave in “On the Town,” Bernstein’s music for Broadway charted

new stylistic and emotional territory. Led by Bramwell Tovey, with special

guests Annaleigh Ashford, Christopher Jackson, Laura Osnes and Aaron

Tveit, this loving tribute promises to become a classic music moment to

remember. Repeats Monday, January 1 at 10:30 p.m.

Big PacificThursdays, January 4–25 at 8 p.m.Over four cinematic episodes, this special breaks boundaries between land

and sea to survey the array of rare and dazzling creatures found in and

around the Pacific Ocean. Actor and producer Daniel Dae Kim (Hawaii Five-

0, Lost) narrates the series. Traveling coast-to-coast and examining the

micro to the mega, the series moves throughout the world’s largest ocean to

present a broad range of locations, species, natural phenomena and behav-

iours. Each episode focuses on an iconic characteristic of the Pacific – vora-

cious, mysterious, violent and passionate – to weave stories from across the

sea that illustrate the multi-faceted character of this ocean. Filmed in ultra-

high definition, the ocean and its denizens are presented in a way never

before seen on television. Encore broadcasts air the following Thursdays at

Into the Amazon: American ExperienceTuesday, January 9 at 9 p.m.Learn the remarkable story of the 1914 journey taken by President Theodore

Roosevelt and legendary Brazilian explorer Cândido Mariano da Silva

Rondon into the heart of the South American rainforest to chart an unex-

plored tributary of the Amazon River. Roosevelt spent eight harrowing weeks

in one of the most remote and inhospitable places on earth, battling tena-

cious insects, deadly rapids, fever, hunger and exhaustion on a quest to map

an unknown river in one of the wildest and most beautiful places on earth.

What was anticipated to be a relatively tranquil journey turned out to be a

brutal test of courage and character. More than a dramatic story of adven-

ture and survival, this special shines a light on two of the western hemi-

sphere’s most formidable men and the culture and politics of their two for-

midable nations.

President Roosevelt pointing at a map of South America

Antiques Roadshow (New Season!)Mondays at 8 p.m. beginning January 8Still satiating the curious after more than 20 years searching for America’s

hidden treasures, this popular series finds sensational first-time objects in

six cities featured as part of Season 22. From eyewitness accounts of historic

moments to items that are truly macabre, appraisers, guests and locations

make this a ground-breaking new season! How did a mosquito reveal a mas-

terpiece? This mystery is solved in our first stop this month in Harrisburg,

Pennsylvania.Another intriguing find in Harrisburg is a head in a box! A plas-

ter head, that is, of a convicted bank robber who fashioned the prop to aid

in his attempted prison escape. Then join us as we also make visits this sea-

son to New Orleans, Portland, St. Louis, Green Bay and Newport, discovering

many first-time items. All episodes repeat the following Thursdays at 9 p.m.

In 1979, James Baldwin wrote a letter to his liter-

ary agent describing his next project. The book was

to be a revolutionary, personal account of the lives

and successive assassinations of three of his close

friends – Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin

Luther King, Jr. But at the time of Baldwin’s death

in 1987, he left behind only 30 completed pages of

his manuscript. Now, in this incendiary documen-

tary, master filmmaker Raoul Peck envisions the book James Baldwin never fin-

ished. The result is a radical, up-to-the-minute examination of race in America,

using Baldwin’s original words, spoken by Samuel L. Jackson, and a flood of rich

archival material. By confronting the deeper connections between these three

leaders, Baldwin and Peck have produced a work that challenges the very defini-

tion of what America stands for. Repeats Friday, January 19 at 11 p.m.

Understanding theOpioid EpidemicWednesday, January 17 at 10 p.m.

Investigate the current opioid epidemic, which has been called the worst

drug crisis in American history. Death rates now rival those of AIDS during

the 1990s, with overdoses now killing more than 27,000 people a year. This

timely special combines stories of people and communities impacted, along

with information from experts and those at the frontlines of dealing with the

epidemic. The program also traces the history of how the nation arrived at

this situation and provides possible solutions for dealing with the crisis. The

program is followed at 11 p.m. by FRONTLINE: Chasing Heroin. A searing,

two- hour investigation places America’s heroin crisis in a fresh and provoca-

tive light — telling the stories of individual addicts, but also illuminating the

epidemic’s years-in-the-making social context, exploring what happens when

addiction is treated like a public health issue, not a crime.

We’ll Meet Again with Ann CurryTuesdays, January 23 – February 27 at 8 p.m.Exploring some of history’s most dramatic

events, this new series brings together people

whose lives intersected at pivotal moments.

Each episode reveals the powerful bonds

forged among people who now, against the

odds, have the chance to reunite with someone who transformed their life.

These moving personal stories of hope, courage and love include a Vietnam

War baby desperate to find the American father she last saw 40 years ago, a

military chaplain who helped a stranger through the trauma of 9/11, a

Japanese-American girl interned in 1942 who never forgot the classmate

who helped her during her darkest hours and civil rights workers whose lives

were forever changed by the deep relationships they formed in the 1960s

South. Each story will take you on a journey of hope.

FRONTLINE: Exodus Tuesday, January 23 at 9 p.m.Since 2011, millions of people have fled their homes in Syria and other coun-

tries besieged by violence, helping to fuel Europe’s largest migration crisis

since the end of World War II. This special features the epic first-hand sto-

ries of refugees and migrants as they make dangerous journeys across 26

countries seeking safety and a better life. The two-hour program draws on

camera and smartphone footage filmed by refugees and migrants themselves

– from inside a sinking dinghy on a route across the Mediterranean Sea

where thousands have died, to the tents and fires inside Calais’ notorious

“Jungle” camp. Through its harrowing access and intimacy, FRONTLINE

vividly exposes a shadow-world of human traffickers exploiting the crisis for

profit, how countries are handling the influx of people and the challenges

and choices these refugees and migrants face every day.

The Secret of Tuxedo Park: American Experience Thursday, January 18 at 9 p.m.In the fall of 1940, the fate of Western civilization hung in the balance. British Prime

Minister Winston Churchill delivered his country's most valuable military secret – a

revolutionary radar component – to a Wall Street tycoon, Alfred Lee Loomis. Loomis

had for years led a double life, spending his days earning vast fortunes on Wall Street

and his weekends working with the world’s leading scientists at his top-secret defense

laboratory in Tuxedo Park, outside New York City. This is the untold story of the eccen-

tric tycoon and the circle of scientific geniuses he assembled before World War II to

develop the science for radar and the atomic bomb.Together they changed the course

of history. Original broadcast airs on Tuesday, January 16 at 9 p.m. on Vegas PBS
