Assaults on bus drivers on the risePamela RothVictoria News

Ben Williams is frustrated and angry.

Ever since he heard about the latest attack on a bus driver in Victoria last week, the president of Unifor Local 333 (the union representing bus drivers) has been trying to wrap his head around the incident, and why attacks on bus drivers are on the rise.

The latest attack unfolded around 1:30 p.m. last Friday when a male passenger asked to get off at a decommissioned bus stop at Kings Road and Douglas Street.

According to police, the driver told the passenger he would have to get off at the next stop. In response, the passenger attacked the driver while the bus was in motion.

The driver managed to pull the bus over at the intersection of Douglas and Bay streets, but the attack continued as other passengers got off the bus. The suspect eventually fled the scene when the driver got off the bus. He was quickly located and arrested by police, and now faces charges of assault causing bodily harm.

Williams has yet to speak to the driver, who was left with lacerations on his face and bruising on his sides. A driver himself, Williams called the incident completely unacceptable.

“The operators out there are just trying to carry out the course of their duties. People should be able to go to work without fear of being assaulted,” said Williams. “There’s definitely a heightened concern that the smallest little thing seems to set people off.”

When Williams began his career 16 years ago, there was maybe one to six reports a year of drivers being spit on by unruly passengers. Now, he said it’s not uncommon to have drivers spat on three or four times during a weekend. Verbal altercations are also now happening on a daily basis, and Williams isn’t sure why.

“People wouldn’t walk into a bank and if they don’t like what they hear, they spit into a teller’s face,” he said. “I’m not sure why they feel that way about a transit operator.”

So far this year, B.C. Transit has recorded

43 assaults on bus drivers in the Greater Victoria area. Last year, there were 72 reports and 27 in 2013. The year prior, 31 assaults were reported.

In response to the problem, five protective barriers made out of special

glass are set to arrive in Victoria next month and be installed as part of a pilot project. One barrier was installed at the beginning of the year, but the union decided it didn’t provide the level of protection drivers were looking

for so products from other manufacturers were explored.

At first, Williams said drivers were reluctant about the barriers, but now they are viewing them as a solution.

“A lot of these confrontations are happening on a daily

basis and they are starting to escalate to this level,” said Williams, who sought input from a similar pilot project being conducted in Brampton, Ontario.

“More and more transit systems are starting to look at this.

It’s unfortunate, but it’s needed.”

Police continue to investigate the latest assault and are looking for passengers who left the bus before speaking with officers. Anyone with information is asked to call 250-995-7654.

Meet the candidates for the riding of Victoria Murray Rankin – NDP

Christine van ReeuwykBlack Press

Nestled in a home adjacent to both Victoria and Oak Bay, NDP MP candidate (incumbent) Murray Rankin, holds a certain fondness for the group that was once called the Western Canada Wilderness Committee.

“Linda and I met at one of the early meetings of what’s now the wilderness committee … she was a student and government worker and I was a new law professor at UVic,” he says of his wife Linda Hannah.

Rankin was integral in those early years, joining the board and founding the organization. But more importantly, he met and married Linda and had sons Ben, now an economist in Ottawa, and Mark, who recently moved back to Victoria for work.

The family lived in Fairfield for 24 years before downsizing to another home adjacent to Oak Bay.

With his sons hitting a certain age, and rapidly gaining independence, Rankin was looking for a change already when Victoria’s NDP MP Denise Savoie resigned her post in August 2012.

“I thought ‘This is not a government that should last. It’s not consistent with my values or the values of the people of Victoria’.”

He hit the campaign trail, primarily by bike, and with thoughts of his 28 and 25 year old sons.

“I see amongst their generation so much dissatisfaction and cynicism of the democratic process. … They don’t have the kind of steady employment I have and so many of my generation have,” Rankin says. “I just really feel we’re leaving this generation with the largest ecological, social and economic debt in history.”

“I just had to step up and say I’m not going to let this happen if I can make a difference.”

Murray draws on his decades of legal expertise and political acumen, despite little previous experience as a politician.

“If people want a career politician they shouldn’t look to me. … I had the experience of running the law firm, but I’d never run for office before,” he says. “Some people think it’s a virtue to not be a career politician … We need people in the House of Commons from all walks of life, I think.”

Jo-Ann Roberts – Green Party

Pamela RothBlack Press

Why are you running in the federal election? That’s a question Green Party candidate Jo-Ann Roberts has been asked a lot during her quest to become the next MP for Victoria.

A veteran journalist for 37 years who is best known as the host of the arts and current affairs program All Points West on CBC Radio One in Victoria, Roberts left her job to speak out about the government’s current vision for Canada.

“It was not my vision. I felt that in this election I had to be free to do something more active than what I was able to do with the CBC,” said Roberts, who initially planned on leaving her job to be an advocate.

“It became pretty obvious that one of the best ways to be part of the discussion is to run as a candidate. When I read vision Green, it felt like it fit with my values.”

According to Roberts, Victoria is a unique and green city that wants a member of parliament that can bring that vision and experience to the rest of the country.

What she’s noticed from going door-to-door is people are somewhat living in fear about the possibility of having another Conservative majority.

“They are trying to figure out the best way to stop that,” said Roberts, who believes she can speak strongly on social issues, climate issues, and crown corporations like CBC and Canada Post.

“We’re doing a lot of things really well here. We understand how to take on the issue of climate change better than any parts of the country. That’s something we can share with the rest of Canada.”

Roberts first began working for the CBC in 1976, starting her career on the East Coast. She entered journalism to inform listeners and affect positive change for Canada, and is the recipient of numerous journalism awards.

Roberts is married to Ken Kelly, an urban planner who is the general manager of the Downtown Victoria Business Association. The pair have four adult children, Christoper, Claire, Alyson and Meghan, and are expecting their first grandchild in April.

John Rizzuti – Conservative

Kendra WongBlack Press

John Rizzuti wants to turn Victoria into a vibrant community supported by quality jobs, growing economy and safe communities.

The Conservative candidate, running in the Victoria riding, is a retired school principal and business owner who has lived in Victoria for the last 47 years with his wife Marilynne, three children and six grandchildren.

“For me, it’s time to give back to the community and serve it some more,” Rizzuti said. “I care about Victoria. I want to make sure it gets the best it can and I want it to continue to be a vibrant city for all of us and anyone who wants to visit or settle here in the future.”

Rizzuti, 66, has worked in seven schools throughout the Victoria region during his more than 30-year-career. He started as a principal in 1983 and retired from Wishart Elementary in the Sooke School District in 2005. He also served as the president of the B.C. Principals’ and Vice-Principals’ Association and on municipal, private company and volunteer boards.

He has a masters in education from the University of Victoria.

If elected, Rizzuti said he hopes to sustain a strong economy, keep streets and communities safe, while also balancing economic and environmental responsibilities. He will also advocate for more support for housing.

Locally, his focus will be on finding ways to support tourism, the Inner Harbour, transportation, technology, and arts and culture in the city.

“Running schools, my job was to make sure that I ran the school in a responsible and fiscally responsible way that promoted the success of families and children and that I kept them safe and secure,” he said. “For me, what I’m doing right now is a much larger scale of that and that’s what inspires me, that’s what motivates me. I have a passion for this city and I want to see us be the best that we can be.”

This is Rizzuti’s first campaign for federal office, but ran unsuccessfully to a trustee for the Greater Victoria School District in November.

He was acclaimed in early March to represent the conservatives in the federal election.

Cheryl Thomas – Liberal

Jennifer BlythBlack Press

Cheryl Thomas can honestly say her political roots run deep.

Not only was her great-grandmother active in the campaign for women’s right to vote, but her grandfather had the distinction of running against Tommy Douglas early in his career.

Today, Thomas brings a long history of community and political involvement to her position as a Liberal candidate in the Victoria riding. “I’ve always been involved behind the scenes and I’ve run both provincial and federal campaigns, so I understand the chaos of an election,” she says.

Passionate about cultivating leadership and collaboration, Thomas is an educator of leadership and teamwork, both here at home at the University of Victoria and previously at Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, in addition to Royal Roads University and Camosun College.

With her children grown and having returned from eight years teaching overseas, the time was right for her to run as a candidate herself, she says.

“While abroad, I saw Canada’s image eroding considerably ... I have five-year-old and nine-year-old grandsons and this is not the world I want them to grow up in,” Thomas says.

Born in Saskatchewan and raised on a farm in Stettler, Alta., where her father was a veterinarian, the message growing up was one of building society and community. “That’s part of who I am,” she says.

“I guess I’m an idealist; I keep thinking we have to do better than we have.”

After moving to Greater Victoria in 1990, Thomas was a leader in the Parent Advisory Councils at Willows Elementary and Oak Bay High. She served on Victoria’s Film Commission for six years and currently serves on the boards of the Victoria Harbourside Rotary Club and the Oak Bay United Church.

Key issues this election include the environment, housing and infrastructure, and Thomas would like to see the federal government more involved in those issues, but in a way that makes sense to local jurisdictions.

Councillor wants public to know more about amalgamationPamela RothVictoria News

An Esquimalt councillor is hoping an upcoming public forum will give the public a fair chance to understand what amalgamating with 13 municipalities in the Greater Victoria area would truly mean.

“I believe the

public hasn’t had fair and equitable access to opposing the view,” said Beth Burton-Krahn, one of the organizers of the Rethinking Amalgamation forum at Camosun College next week.

“The average person on the street will have a much better understanding of

what amalgamation really means, what the research shows, what the stories are from other regions, but also more importantly a much better understanding of our current system.”

The issue of amalgamating the region’s 13 municipalities has been ongoing for a number of years. Greater Victoria has a population of approximately

335,000 people, and the region is governed by 91 councillors and mayors.

During last November’s municipal election, Victoria, Esquimalt and six other municipalities

had questions on the ballot about reducing the number of municipalities in Greater Victoria through amalgamation.

In Victoria and Esquimalt, the referendums passed with overwhelming support. Region-wide, about 75 per cent of people voted in

favour, but Burton-Krahn noted that the municipalities were scattered with their questioning — only Victoria and Langford asked citizens directly if they were interested in amalgamating.

In Esquimalt, residents were asked if they were interested in having a study done on amalgamation and looking at options for better service alignment. If there had been an opposing view on the ballot, Burton-Krahn believes the results could have been much different.

“Certainly on the street people would have their opinions, so they have done their reading or research, but there was never any kind of opposition movement. It was probably because the gist was that this was driving towards a study. It wasn’t a binding question,” said Burton-Krahn, who’s opposed to amalgamation.

“It’s because of the loss of representative democracy. Let’s talk service delivery, let’s get our focus on doing better regionally and inter municipally.”

The public forum takes place at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17 at the Lansdowne Campus. Guest speakers include University of Victoria Professor Dr. Robert Bish and Johnny Carline, former chief administrative officer of Metro Vancouver. [email protected]

Superheroes invade VictoriaKendra WongVictoria News

Mark Ashfield isn’t ashamed to admit he’s a massive dork.

“I’m big into superheroes. They got me through when I was growing up and I was in a children’s hospital on the east coast,” said Ashfield, a Fernwood resident.

He was born with fetal alcohol syndrome, which means a lot of time spent with massive migraines in the IWK Health Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

“I was in constant pain as a child. There was really no relief for it — they tried everything from medication to drugs, different kinds of therapy,” he said.

“Superheroes were kind of my escape. Very early on my grandfather, my hero, starting bringing me superhero novels because he knew I liked comic books. He used to think you’ve got an amazing imagination. There are the words, paint the picture.”

Ashfield attributes his creativity and the beginning of Superheroes of Victoria to that.

Superheroes of

Victoria is a local volunteer group that dresses up as superheroes to help raise money and awareness of charitable organizations such as the B.C. Children’s Hospital.

Their mandate is to provide volunteers for any charity that needs them. They’ve made appearances with the MS society, kids baseball clubs and Five Hole for Food, attending roughly four to five events a month.

“We also want to help run games, set things up, tear down, anything they need us to do, that’s what we’re there for,” said Ashfield, adding everyone has the superpower to help people. “So a kid gets to meet Batman, but they also see Batman helping out. We’re trying to teach kids about community and helping others.”

On Sunday, Sept. 13, Victoria residents have the opportunity to get their photo taken with more than 50 of their favourite superheroes as part of the sixth annual photo shoot fundraiser.

“You can be a superhero every single day and a lot

of it is just acting with compassion and empathy,” said Elizabeth Hall, marketing director with Superheroes of Victoria. “The simplest thing like smiling at a stranger, doing something nice for someone, taking a donation down to the Mustard Seed — those are superhero things to do.”

The event, includes a selfie booth, cape maker, face painting and a number of prizes that participants

can win such as gift certificates, bikes, and an electric scooter that will be designed to look like a superhero’s cycle.

Last year, the group raised roughly $3,600 for B.C. Children’s Hospital and saw between 1,200 to 1,400 people. They’re hoping to double that this year.

Attacks on bus drivers pathetic

What’s with the losers attacking city bus drivers in the Greater Victoria area? It was surprising to hear that a bus driver was attacked last week after he told a passenger they could no longer get off at a decommissioned stop at Kings Road and Douglas Street. It was even more surprising to hear that attacks on bus drivers are on the rise.

In the latest incident, the passenger proceeded to beat the driver while the bus was moving. The attack continued even when the driver managed to pull the bus over at the intersection of Douglas and Bay streets. What’s even more sad is that passengers got off while the attack continued. Why didn’t anyone intervene?

The attack eventually stopped once the driver got off the bus and the suspect fled the scene. He was quickly picked up by police and now faces charges of assault causing bodily harm. Thank goodness he’s still not on the prowl. Who knows what other crimes someone with a temper like this are capable of committing.

This driver was simply doing his job. He didn’t wake up that morning expecting to be attacked for informing a passenger about a decommissioned bus stop. What’s even scarier is this happened in the middle of the day.

We don’t lash out at bank tellers or cab drivers when they inform us about minor inconveniences we don’t necessarily want to hear, so what gives someone the right to hit a bus driver? The fact that assaults – whether it be verbal or physical – on bus drivers is on the rise is alarming. It’s a sad day when protective barriers have to be installed on city buses so drivers can come home unharmed at the end of a work day.

Green Party signs show disrespect for environment I take exception to the Green Party placing hundreds of signs on public property in the Victoria area. Victoria and other island municipalities need regulations and fines for such activity, as exist in the City of Vancouver. Political signs belong only on private property as an indication of individual or business support for a particular candidate. From arriving on the ferry to taking visitors on a tour of Dallas Road, the area is littered and defaced with Green Party signs on public property. As a member of the public who owns this property, I believe it shows disrespect for our environment. I am not impressed by Green Party hypocrisy.

Welcome back students! Welcome back for another school year!  I hope that all of you: students, teachers, support staff, administrators, specialists and the board office staff enjoyed your summer and are rejuvenated for the 2015/16 school year.  I am extremely proud of the work that all of you accomplish within our district.

I want to personally welcome the Superintendent of Education, Piet Langstraat to the Greater Victoria

School District. He comes to SD61 with an incredible amount of experience and an ambition to provide students with the best possible education. Over the past 31 years, Piet has been a teacher, principal, coordinator, deputy superintendent and superintendent of education. I am eager to get to know Piet and I hope that you are as well.

Have a super great 2015/16 school year and I look forward to seeing you throughout the school year.  Please plan on attending a committee meeting on the first and second Monday or a board meeting on the third Monday of every month. I wish all of you an enriched educational experience this school year!

Trudeau’s pledge sounds familiar

If Justin’s Trudeau’s pledge to fix up our economy by fixing up roads and bridges that are supposedly in state of disrepair sounds familiar, it should.  It sounds familiar for those of us who remember another election 22 years ago and a Liberal Leader named Jean Chretien.

The numbers showed most Canadians felt it was time to replace our Conservative government. Chretien won a liberal majority 22 years ago on jobs jobs jobs and he was going to spend a bonanza fixing roads.  Is history gonna repeat itself? Is Mr. Trudeau counting on us to be oblivious that most roads and bridges fall under provincial jurisdiction?

1. It’s Sunday morning, what are you having for breakfast? Sunday breakfast is a breakaway from yogurt and berries to bacon and eggs. Softboiled, on crispy bacon on multigrain toast! The morning paper and a mocha coffee!

2. If you didn’t do what you did for a living, what would you be?I am a physiotherapist by profession and currently a municipal politician. Both are jobs to facilitate better quality of living for people. But you ask what else? I reinvented my physio practice businesses several times in several areas. My last dream challenge for this was to do a floating day spa on a lovely boat.

3. What’s playing in your music player right now?My CD tray has Janis Joplin, Leonard Cohen, Il Divo, Joe Cocker, and Tchaikovsky Sleeping Beauty.

4. What’s your biggest pet peeve?Criticism without constructive ideas for improvement.

5. What’s the best thing about living in Esquimalt?

Best thing about living in Esquimalt and this region is everything. We often forget how lucky we are to be at the ocean, with mountains as a backdrop, and moderate climate year round. Live somewhere else in Canada for awhile and you recognize how amazing this region is.

6. Where were you born?Niagara -on-the-Lake, Ontario – a small town with amazing historic and military history, not to mention a success story in developing itself as a tourism and cultural place to go.

7. Which person, alive or dead, would you have dinner with?

My husband and family whom I don’t get the chance to sit down with altogether very often. Family are most important.

8. What’s your favourite vacation destination? The family cottage in Ontario and/or Mexico depending on the time of year. Winter getaways to Mexico renew, and provide me with much needed light (sunshine) therapy!

9. If you could have one super power, what would it be?Provide wishes to people who need some help.

10. What’s the one thing you haven’t done that you’d love to do?Travel more!

11. If you could see one concert, what would it be?Leonard Cohen

12. What is your favourite TV show?Motive

13. What’s your dream car?Electric convertible!

14. What is your favourite place to dine?

Pescatores in Victoria.

15. What are your words to live by? We can be part of the problem or part of the solution. There is always opportunity in change.

Cost savings or hazard to your health? Some patients are sensitive to certain

generic medications because the ll-ers or dyes may vary slightly from the brand name. e generic may contain lactose, where the brand name tablet had cellulose, for example; the generic may use yellow dye No. 4 and the brand name No 3. For most people, however, these di erences are of no concern.

Generic medications are extremely important to our healthcare system.

ey’ve saved billions of dol-lars and generic companies reinvest pro ts into litigation to challenge drug patents and provide new generic opportu-nities for Canadians. Addi-tionally, most generic man-ufacturers are Canadian, in contrast to the multinational brand name companies.

If a pharmacist o ers a generic product, embrace the opportu-nity knowing the rigorous tests it has undergone.

Jason Cridge is a pharmacist and pharmacy manger at Cridge Family Pharmacy at 641 Fort St. Call him with medication questions at 250-686-7104.

Wthenever a new generic medication hits the market, I’m inundated with people asking, “is this the same

medication that I was taking?” ere’s a certain level of suspicion with generic medications, and I feel the old saying, “you get what you pay for” is partially responsible – especially when the new version can be as much as 82 per cent less than the brand name!

To better understand generic medications, the rst step is to follow the life cycle of a med-ication: when a drug com-pany creates a medication, it’s granted exclusivity from competition. is allows the company to recoup its in-vestment and make a pro t during a speci ed period.

Once patent expires, the drug molecule becomes common domain and any company can manufacture it. ese generic manufacturers provide the same molecule for a reduced price, and each product must be declared equivalent by Health Canada. New generic drugs are run through many tests, ensuring the active drug molecule is identical to the brand name and that its absorption in the blood stream is the same.

Victoria police are trying to determine whether a scam tar-geting local elderly Chinese members has ties with a similar scam that occurred in the Lower Mainland this summer.

Police chief Frank Elsner recently made an appeal to Victoria's Chinese community following an investiga-tion into the “blessing scam,” which bilked a local resident out of more than $50,000.

Police describe the scam as an elaborate fraud designed to prey on elderly Chinese members of the com-munity who maintain strong traditional cultural beliefs. Fraud-sters approach vic-tims on the street and convince them an evil spirit is following them and will harm mem-bers of their family unless a blessing cer-emony is performed.

The ceremony requires the victim to place all of their money and valuables into a bag to be blessed. The bag is then given back to the victim, and they are instructed not to open it for several days or tell any family mem-bers, otherwise the blessing will not work and the evil spirit will return.

When the bag is finally opened, the valuables are no longer inside and the sus-pects are long gone.

Since fraud victims are often reluctant to come forward, police are making a special public appeal.

“These criminals have specifically tar-geted vulnerable mem-bers of one segment of our Asian community – Chinese elders,” said Elsner.

“We need to know if you have been con-tacted by someone who tried to ensnare you in this fraud.”

In Vancouver, three women from mainland China were recently taken into custody fol-lowing an extensive fraud investigation that extended across Canada.

Police have since tied the women to several frauds such as the blessing scam. Similar scams were also reported in 2013, prompting police to issue public warnings and arrest several people.

In connection with the most recent arrests, at least four victims have come forward, each report-ing losing $10,000 to $20,000 in money and jewellery.

Hailan Lu, 53, Meizhan Pan, 57, and 61-year-old Rong Lin have been charged with extortion and fraud.

Anyone who has fallen victim to the scam in Victoria or knows a victim is asked to call 250-995-7309.

Why You Need Vitamin C and Lysine for Heart Health and More...

Vitamin C is arguably the single most important water soluble anti-

oxidant in the human body. Antioxi-dants play a key role in protecting cells against free radicals, which can cause damage and play a role in heart disease, cancer and other diseases.

It’s tragic that researchers are unaware that high doses of vitamin C and lysine cannot only prevent, but reverse atherosclerosis in coronary and other arteries in the body. Vitamin C is needed for the manufacture of collagen, the glue that holds cells together. A lack of vitamin C means poor collagen, resulting in cracks appearing between cor-onary cells thus setting the stage for fatal blood clot.

Recently, Dr. Sydney Bush, an English researcher, made this monumental discovery. He took photos of the ret-inal arteries and then gave patients 6,000 milligrams of vitamin C and 5,000 of lysine (lysine adds strength to coronary arteries just like steel rods increase the strength of concrete). A year later he repeated the pictures. To his surprise, he found atherosclerosis fading away.

Millions of North Americans also suffer from osteoarth-ritis. Without sufficient vitamin C to produce collagen, a major component of cartilage, bone eventually grinds on bone. There would be fewer joint replacements if more vitamin C were available to produce healthy collagen.

Rheumatoid arthritis, the inflammatory type, also requires large doses of vitamin C. Every moment of the day our bodies are using oxygen to keep us alive. But oxidation results in metabolic ash, known as “free radicals”, which are believed to trigger an inflammatory reaction in joints. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps to reduce damaging free-radicals.

Patients often appear surprised when I tell them that vita-min C will help them keep their teeth a lifetime. By age 65 one in five North Americans has lost all their teeth and many of their teeth were normal. Rather, it was the gums that could no longer hold teeth firmly in place in part due to inadequate amounts of vitamin C. This vitamin is needed in large amounts to produce healthy collagen, the glue that holds cells together and keeps gums healthy. Without good mortar bricks fall apart and the same hap-pens when gums lacking collagen lose their grip on teeth.

The essential amino acid lysine is probably best known for its use in those with herpes simplex infections but several other benefits have been ascribed to the molecule, includ-ing favourable effects on blood pressure and stroke pre-vention but also a positive influence on mood and anxiety.

In addition to providing healthy collagen production and a healthy cardiovascular system, vitamin C and lysine sup-plementation helps support:

• Immune system health • Vision • Teeth and gums • Wound healing • Bones and cartilage • Recovery from shingles • Recovery from herpes outbreaks

This is why I’ve been taking high doses of vitamin C and lysine for the last 16 years following a heart attack. I be-lieve it saved my life. Medi-C Plus™, containing high doses of vitamin C and lysine, is available in powder and capsules.capsules.

A normally quiet and adult-centric domicile was quickly turned upside down when a friend came to visit with her three children. Within minutes, the kids were bouncing on the couch, pawing at collector memorabilia, and crying. The youngest, then 18 months, needed the inevitable diaper change. But before I could offer any assistance, Diapergate was resolved. It took a few moments to collect my jaw from the floor. If you’re a racing fan, the speed at which the dirty deed was taken care of can be likened to those working on a team’s pit crew during a race. Before you can blink, the car’s tires have been changed, it’s been refueled and it’s on the circuit again. My friend looked me straight in the eyes and offered me these words: “It’s not my first rodeo.” Clearly. It’s not the Subaru Forester’s first rodeo when it comes to finding itself in a sticky, messy, or dirty situation and then taking care of it. Quickly. With its tried and tested Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system and the additional assistance of X-Mode (equipped on all Foresters with the CVT transmission), it’ll have you out of the mud – or purposely playing in it – before you know it.Though it wasn’t my first rodeo with the Japanese manufacturer’s SUV, the setting in which we’d be testing it was all-new to me: The Maritimes. But there’s the warm welcome of being wrapped up in the arms of a vehicle that feels like home. Home in a sense where there’s room to spread out. With the rear seats folded, there’s an impressive, best-in-class, 2,115L of cargo space. Home in a sense where the Forester allows the sun’s glory to fill the cabin with its warmth thanks to its greenhouse-like design to let as much light inside as possible. And home in a sense where you feel safe; protected. It’s no surprise that the Forester is an Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick Plus; meaning, this vehicle has earned this winning title nine years running (2007-2015.)While the 2016 Forester receives new updates like a new audio system, steering responsive fog lights, a shark fin antenna, one-touch turn signals and more, these changes aren’t alienating to Subaru aficionados – or those coming

into the brand – who demand some of the latest tech features yet want an easy-to-navigate centre stack. Those characteristics alone made this first-time Maritime wrangler feel a little more at ease with the task at hand.Over the three-day drive, we’d cover three provinces: New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia. The idea was to have fun, enjoy the car and take as many photos as we’d like in hopes for claiming bragging rights to the best “road trip” style shots. Our drive routes would take us along the Trans Canada Highway, through potato fields, along red dirt roads and over the Confederation Bridge. No trip to PEI would be complete without purchasing an Anne of Green Gables hat, which included her signature red, braided locks. Then wearing it for the rest of the adventure and having everyone take it for a spin. I always thought I could pull off being a redhead. Then again, maybe not.Whether it was the whale spotting aboard the Confederation Ferry or jumping for joy when meeting the world’s largest lobster in Shediac, NB, or just taking a scenic run along the St. John river in Fredericton, NB, I wouldn’t say I’m a veteran when it comes to the lay of the land in the Atlantic provinces, but the next time I go, it won’t be my first rodeo. And if the 2016 Subaru Forester is my steer, I’m heading in the right direction. With or without crying kids. The 2016 Forester 2.5i has a starting MSRP of $25,995 (excluding delivery and taxes.) The 2.0XT starts at $33,495 (excluding delivery and taxes.)

The start of a new school year signals many things for thousands of children around Greater Victoria: back to daily routines, homework, reconnecting with friends again — and the less desirable, lice.

According to Priti Bha-thella, a pharmacist at Elements Compounding Pharmacy, she sees the most cases of lice are at the beginning of summer and the start of the school year.

Lice are tiny insects that live on the human scalp and feed on human blood. There are three life cycles of head lice: they start as a nit in the egg stage, in eight or nine days emerge as nymphs and

will grow into adults with an average lifespan of 30 days.

Now is the time of year to watch out for those infesta-tions.

Bhathella says even though lice is prevalent among all age groups, it’s most commonly found in kids three to 12 years of age.

But there are a few com-mon misconceptions about lice that Bhathella hopes to clear up.

1. Lice jump from person to person.

Lice only spread by head-to-head contact and sharing personal items such as hair brushes, towels or hats. “They crawl fast, but don’t jump. You have to have direct head-to-head or hair-to-hair contact.”

2. It is an indication of poor hygiene.

“Head lice are found everywhere, it’s not an indicator of poor hygiene because they can bind to both clean and dirty hair,”

said Bhathella.3. Lice infestations occur

in people from lower-income families.

“A lot of people are embarrassed, they’re whis-pering and I always tell them it has nothing to do with hygiene, it’s a condi-tion that you treat just like anything else,” she says.

If there is a lice infestation at school, Bhathella says it’s important not to panic and rush into treatment before being properly diagnosed by a doctor.

“[Doctors] are going to know what they’re look-ing for and what guidelines to follow before we treat,” she says. “If a school says there’s a lice infestation, parents may jump to con-clusions and think they need to treat. But make sure you have an active case before you treat.”

She notes there are many different condi-tions such as dandruff that have similar symp-toms as lice.

Once diagnosed, the next step is treatment, which can usually be achieved through spe-cial shampoos.

“One of the biggest hurdles is older treat-ments such as insec-ticide products. They attach to the nervous system of the lice and

that’s how they kill them. But we’re seeing more and more resis-tance to those prod-ucts,” Bhathella says.

“Now we’ve come up with newer products: some work on lung function and dehydra-tion of the lice. Even though they’ve been on the market, they used to be effective back in the day, but there’s been a mutation in the lice, that’s why we have to come up with new products that

are more effective.” Ultimately, it comes

down to preventing head-to-head contact and the sharing of items with someone who may have lice.

“People feel they have to shave their head, but you need to think of the impact for a child,” she explains. “You don’t need to go that route. I think the key is talk to a health care professional so we can have successful treatments.”

Kendra Wong/Victoria News

Lee Vassiliadis didn’t have a normal child-hood.

At the age of nine,

the Victoria resident spent his days going to school first thing in the morning until the afternoon, then headed over to his fam-ily’s restaurant to help

bus tables and wash dishes.

“I call it home because it was like a second home,” Vas-siliadis said. “For me, it was to help the fam-

ily out. We didn’t have much. We saw our parents working hard so we got thrown into it, but I really enjoyed it. It wasn’t an average childhood.”

Vassiliadis, his older brother Terry and par-ents, Evgeni (Eugene) and Paschalina (Lina) immigrated to Canada from Greece with two suitcases and a trunk

in 1974. His father’s brother lived in Victo-ria.

“My dad and mom’s dream, when we came here, was to open up a souvlaki place. Back in the late ‘70s, early ‘80s, there wasn’t anything in Victoria,” he said.

After working in sev-eral local restaurants for the next few years to learn the language and tricks of the trade (and taking out a sec-ond mortgage on the family townhouse), Eugene opened a sou-vlaki restaurant with homemade spanako-pita, hummus, gyro and tzatziki recipes.

On November 24, 1979, Eugene’s officially opened on Fort Street.

At one point, the business had expanded to include three Eugene’s restaurants around the Island. Though they have since closed the res-taurants, they continue to sell their comfort food using the original recipe from 36 years ago to grocery stores around the Island

through Eugene’s Wholesale Greek Food.

Vassiliadis, who knows the ins and outs of cleaning, prepping and cooking, no lon-ger scrubs dishes and tables, but instead has taken over the busi-ness from his parents when they retired.

Now, his brother Terry and his partner are expanding the busi-nesses again and open-ing the Village Taverna that will sell food using the same recipes, among other things.

“It was time for me to step out on my own from the family part-nership that allowed me to have a little more creativity and start fresh,” Terry said. “When we started, we knew it was a good product that we were putting out there. Cus-tomers had become familiar with the taste. We want to continue with that.”

The Village Taverna opens soon at unit 101-1075 Pendergast St. in the Cook Street Village. [email protected]

A local golf club is gearing up to host a tourna-ment to raise money to send children in need into a sport of their choice for the upcoming season in Victoria.

As part of B.C.’s first annual KidSport Week, the Victoria Golf Club is hosting the Men’s Links to Change on Saturday (Sept. 12).

“We are truly grateful to the Victoria Golf Club for hosting this men’s tournament to benefit chil-dren in need, at such an exciting time for Kid-Sport,” said Patti Hunter, general manager of Kid-Sport Victoria.

“Every $400 raised will fund a child, who other-wise couldn’t be on the field of play, into a season of sport.”

Last year, the tournament raised more than $25,000 for the organization — enough to send 100 children into organized sports for the year.

Tournament registration is $185, which includes golf, contests, food and beverage on course, dinner/reception following the tourna-ment, prizes and a tax receipt. Registration and lunch begins at noon and tee off is at 1:30 p.m.

KidSport Greater Victoria was formed in 2000 and provides grants for sport registration fees for children from low-income families.

Travis Paterson Victoria News

Victoria currently has the highest number of heritage-designated homes in the region, leaving Saanich’s planning department wonder-ing if misconceptions are leading potential homeowners away from the process.

To date, there are 86 buildings protected under the heritage designation in Saanich, mostly homes dat-ing from 1859 to the 1960s.

“The rumour is you can’t do anything with your home or building once it’s designated and that’s not true,” said Jane Evans of Saa-nich Planning.

In Victoria, there are more than 900 proper-ties on the city’s heri-

tage registry. In 1983, the city

established the Victo-ria Heritage Founda-tion (VHF) to adminis-ter grants for owners of designated heritage houses. By encour-aging homeowners, the city has seen a dramatic increase in the number of homes protected by heritage designation, from 142 to more than 400 in the last 26 years.

Earning a heritage designation means the building is perma-nently protected by city bylaws.

Evans said the best form of protection is to make sure the build-ing is used and occu-pied, even if it needs to be enlarged with an addition, which has to be done with approval.

“The heritage foun-dation works with owners to make sure the character value of the building isn’t changed but we under-stand there must be room for alteration. Rather than the mes-

sage that you can’t do anything — you definitely want to work with people to create the most comfortable environment.”

Generally, the big-ger sticking points for maintaining charac-ter value are on the exterior, which is also the area of upgrad-ing or renovating that owners can receive a grant.

“Funding is for up to 35 per cent of the [upgrade] quote that’s for homes only, though commercial [buildings] will be looked at down the road,” Evans said.

Another area of challenge is the insur-ance industry, as not all companies are will-ing to insure heritage buildings. Evans has also read incorrect statement’s from insur-ance companies about the repair for heritage buildings.

“[Some insurers] say they don’t insure heritage homes because if something

Heritage registry slowly adding more

MONTH TO DATE, SEPT. 8 COURTESY VICTORIA REAL ESTATE BOARD

goes wrong, municipali-ties will require them to replace it with origi-nal types of material. But in no way do we expect people to go to an old growth forest to find wood from the late

1800s to replace a part of the house. It’s more about what is available and reasonable.”

There are companies who insure heritage homes, it’s just a mat-ter of shopping around,

Evans added. Information on insur-

ance and heritage homes is available at the victoriaheritage-foundation.ca/Misc/insurance.html.

Don DentonVictoria News

Arizona athlete Anthony Ciurro has returned for his second season stopping pucks for the Victoria Cougars after a summer of keep-ing in shape with roller hockey. Ciurro grew up playing roller hockey and it’s his way of stay-ing in top hockey form during the off-season.

The native of Peoria, Arizona, about 20 min-utes outside Phoenix, is happy to be back in Victoria and playing for the Cougars. Ciurro started his Canadian hockey career last year with the Campbell River Storm, but played only one pre-season game in the north island city before being traded to Victoria.

He couldn’t be hap-pier living and playing hockey in Victoria.

“(It’s been) unbeliev-able, the best experi-ence of my life,” said Ciurro. “The team is really prestigious and is a great organization to

play for.”Ciurro said his goal

this year is simple: to win games, and he’s excited to have the Cyclone Taylor Cup here.

Ciurro is reserving judgement on who the team’s top competition will turn out to be until they’ve played some regular season games, but figures the Camp-bell River Storm will be a top team again this year.

It can be lonely play-ing far from home, but Ciurro’s parents made the trip north once last year to see their son in goal and are planning two trips to Victoria this year.

Looking ahead to the start of the 2015-16 sea-son, Ciurro said he was just happy to be back playing with the Cou-gars again.

The Cougars’ next home game is Thurs-day, Sept. 17 against the Westshore Wolves at the Archie Browning Sports [email protected]

in these buildings, but be aware that the price refl ects the restrictions.

Another consideration is a depreciation report, a relatively new tool allowing buyers to compare buildings on a level-playing fi eld. For example, not all condos built in 1981 are

the same. A proactive strata council armed with a depreci-ation report that has diligently maintained their building has an upper-hand over similar buildings that have deferred maintenance in exchange for low strata fees.

Buying a condo can be tough, but we can help. At The Condo Group, we offer free buyer seminars outlining how to become a savvy buyer. If you’re ready to learn what the fair price is for a condo, call us today to get started. Rodney Henderson • thecondogroup.com250-858-1437 (cell) • 250-382-6636 (offi ce)

s a Condo Expert, I often hear buyers say, “I would be

interested in that condo for the right price.” I always ask: “What is a good price?” Usually, the buyer answers, “$X off the list price.” Many factors determine a good price for a condo, and they are rarely linked to the list price. As a buyer, you need to decide what the fair price is for a condo, not how much less than the list price it’s worth.

To determine a fair price of a condo, you should look at how often the strata council meets, what the bylaws include, and what restrictions are in place, such as rentals, pets, smok-ing, and age. While the ability to rent, for example, may not be important to some, it is important to a number of buyers and will impact the sale price of a condo when it is time to sell. The prevailing market will determine by how much. At a cursory glance, I saw the average price of rent-al- and pet-restricted buildings was up to 13% lower than similar condos allowing rentals and pets. I am not saying don’t buy

Question of the WeekThe falling dollar and high cost of gas has prompted many people to choose driving ‘staycations’ this summer. Did you take a trip in Beautiful BC?

Safety Tip:The start of the school year is a great time to review the rules of the

road and your kids’ route to and from school. If you’re dropping them off in a school zone, make sure they exit the car on the side closest to the sidewalk.

Three days, three provinces: a whole new rodeo

‘‘ It’s not the Subaru Forester’s first rodeo when it comes to finding itself in a sticky, messy, or dirty situation and then taking care of it.’’Alexandra Straub

A normally quiet and adult-centric domicile was quickly turned upside down when a friend came to visit with her three children.Within minutes, the kids were bouncing on the couch, pawing at collector memorabilia, and crying. The youngest, then 18 months, needed the inevitable diaper change. But before I could even offer any assistance, Diapergate was resolved. It took a few moments to collect my jaw from the floor. If you’re a racing fan, the speed at which the dirty deed was taken care of can be likened to those working on a team’s pit crew during a race. Before you can even blink, the car’s tires have been changed, it’s been refueled and it’s on the circuit again. My friend looked me straight in the eyes and offered me these words: “It’s not my first rodeo.” Clearly. It’s not the Subaru Forester’s first rodeo when it comes to finding itself in a sticky, messy, or dirty situation and then taking care of it. Quickly. With its tried and tested Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system and the additional assistance of X-Mode (equipped on all Foresters with the CVT transmission), it’ll have you out of the mud – or purposely playing in it – before you know it.Though it wasn’t my first rodeo with the Japanese manufacturer’s SUV, the setting in which we’d be testing it out was all-new to me: The Maritimes. There’s a pleasant discomfort about stepping foot into uncharted territory. But there’s also warm welcome of being wrapped up in the arms of a vehicle that feels like home.

Home in a sense where there’s room to spread out. With the rear seats folded, there’s an impressive, best-in-class, 2,115L of cargo space. Home in a sense where the Forester allows the sun’s glory to fill the cabin with its warmth (well, when it decides to bless me with its presence) thanks to its

greenhouse-like design to let as much light inside as possible. And home in a sense where you feel safe; protected. It’s no surprise that the Forester is an Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick Plus; meaning, this vehicle has earned this winning title nine years running (2007-2015.)While the 2016 Forester receives new updates like a new audio system, steering responsive fog lights, a shark fin antenna, one-touch turn signals and more, these changes aren’t alienating to Subaru aficionados – or those coming into the brand – who demand some of the latest tech features yet want an easy-to-navigate centre stack. Those characteristics alone made this

first-time Maritime wrangler feel a little more at ease with her new setting and the task at hand.Over the three-day drive, we’d cover three provinces: New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia. Essentially, the world was our oyster. Then we’d eat them for dinner.Okay, that was a bad joke, but it’s true. The idea was to have fun, enjoy the car and take as many photos as we’d like in hopes for claiming bragging rights to the best “road trip” style shots. Our drive routes would take as along the Trans Canada Highway, through potato fields, along red dirt roads and

over the Confederation Bridge.Though no trip to PEI would be complete without purchasing an Anne of Green Gables hat, which included her signature red, braided locks. Then wearing it for almost the rest of the adventure and having almost everyone take it for a spin.I always thought I could pull off being a redhead. Then again, maybe not.Whether it was the whale spotting while aboard the Confederation Ferry (from PEI to Nova Scotia), or jumping for joy when meeting the world’s largest lobster in Shediac, NB, or just taking a scenic run along the St.

Sister Celebration planned for Sooke flats this SundayOctavian LacatusuSooke News Mirror

It was 10 years ago when the Irwin family was told daughter Daisy was diagnosed with infant leukemia.

She was only 10 weeks old.Daisy made it clear she wasn’t going anywhere

without a fight. After three rounds of chemotherapy as well as a bone marrow transplant, her cancer went into remission.

“Her statistics were very grim, so we’re very fortunate to have her,” said Patrick Irwin, her father.

This September officially marks 10 years of Daisy being cancer-free, which is why the Irwins will hold a party at the Sooke Flats this Sunday (Sept. 13), from noon to 3 p.m. to celebrate that triumph over the disease, with all proceeds going to Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock. The public is invited.

“We’re calling it Sister Celebration because we’ve got four daughters. We’ve always done something on the anniversary of her bone marrow transplant,” Irwin said.

With the Sooke Lions Club, RCMP, Sooke Fire

Rescue, as well as many others pitching in, this is going to be quite the party. Food and beverages will be available on site, including a lemonade stand set up by the Irwin girls.

Among the attractions will be a fire truck and a police car. Present will also be Daisy’s first Tour de Rock rider, RCMP officer Tasha Adams. Adams took part in the event eight years ago for Daisy, and was posted to Ottawa five years ago.

Daisy, a junior rider on Tour de Rock, has two riders riding for her in this year’s event.
