Victoria could lose the Mari-time Museum of B.C. for good if a long-term lease is not secured with the CPR Steamship Termi-nal.

The Greater Victoria Harbour Authority, the primary tenant of the province-owned building, signed a six-month exclusive option to negotiate a long-term lease for the Maritime Museum in September. The option to lease expired on Feb. 28 and was extended until March 31.

If the Maritime Museum is not granted a lease in the Steamship Terminal, Clay Evans, chair of the Maritime Museum, said the board will have to meet to dis-cuss other options. The museum has not had a home since it left its building in Bastion Square on

Oct. 21.“There are other parties in

Nanaimo [and] Vancouver that are interested in the collection,” said Evans. “We’re not actively looking at that, but we have had offers before.”

However, leaving Victoria would be the worst-case sce-nario for the Maritime Museum, he said. “I think this is where it belongs. [But] if we don’t have a house, and we can’t run as a museum in terms of program-ming and admissions and so forth, we have to do our due dili-gence as a board and make sure that the collection’s looked after.”

The Maritime Museum would be missed in Victoria if the city were to lose it, said Victoria Coun. Pamela Madoff.

“It would be the loss of a cul-tural and educational facility with a long history in the city, which could have a very bright future if the appropriate departments work together.”

Natural gas has been produced safely in B.C. for more than 60 years. It is as much a part of our resource wealth as forestry and fishing. And like forestry and fishing, the

natural gas sector provides thousands of stable, well-paid jobs for British Columbians who work for gas producers in the Northeast and for suppliers and service providers throughout the province.

The industry also generates tax revenue to help pay for social services and infrastructure like salaries for nurses and teachers, and new roads, schools and hospitals. But unlike

forestry and fishing, which are now mature industries, natural gas is entering what the International Energy Agency has described as The Golden Age of Gas. Demand is rising rapidly and B.C. is ideally positioned to meet some of it.

Exporting B.C.’s natural gas is nothing new; it was first transported via Vancouver to the U.S. in 1957 and the U.S. has remained our main market ever since. But with the U.S. producing more of its own gas it now makes sense to sell our surplus overseas where there’s a demand. The only difference is that the gas must be converted into a liquid so it can be shipped.

That’s why B.C. is developing a new industry to produce LNG.

seems to be a species that particu-larly flourishes in B.C. It can often be seen trailing a line of vehicles on the highway, or cutting across lanes of traffic on right turns to get to its pre-ferred habitat.

Transportation Minister Todd Stone says he’s spent time in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario, and this inappropriate love of the left lane seems unique to the Left Coast. So he’s looking at legal changes to make it easier to enforce the practice of keeping the left lane open for passing.

Stone told reporters this week the issue came up often in last year’s rural speed limit review.

“One of the key things we heard from British Columbians all around the province was this frustration with left-lane hogs, people who tend to camp out in the left lane and seem to think that the left lane and right lane are there to serve the same pur-poses,” Stone said. “They’re not.”

One result of that review is a new road sign to replace the “slower traf-fic keep right” and “keep right except to pass” wording used in B.C. “Keep right – let others pass” with a graphic is the new design and it seems to be having some educational effect, Stone said.

Accident studies have shown

that frustrated drivers following too closely or passing on the right are risk factors.

Stone declined to give specifics about what legislative changes are coming. Police told the ministry last year the existing law isn’t clear and tickets can be overturned in court challenges.

A new species of marine glass sponge (Docon-esthes dustinchiversi) was given a special name after being discovered by experts from the Royal B.C. Museum.

Dr. Henry Reiswig, a leading world expert in glass sponges, named the discovery after his now-deceased friend and colleague, Dustin Chiv-ers, who saved his life diving in 1962.

The then 20-year-old Reiswig blacked out while diving off the Californian coast. Chivers carried him to the surface and got him to a hospital in time to save his life.

“Everything I’ve produced so far has been a result of this guy saving my life, as far as I’m con-cerned,” he said.

The new species of sponge was collected on Bowie Seamount, a submarine volcano 180 kilo-metres west of Haida Gwaii, by a marine research group as part of a Fisheries and Oceans Canada project in summer of 2014.

Dr. Melissa Frey, curator of invertebrates at the Royal B.C. Museum, has been studying glass sponges under the guidance of Reiswig. She soon realized something was off about the new sam-

ple. “I gave the specimen to Henry, and after closely

examining the sponge’s spicules he confirmed it new to science. It wasn’t anything I’d ever seen before,” said Frey.

Reiswig, who retired from McGill University’s biology department in 2001, has already made more than 100 different discoveries in his field.

Real estate sales hit mark last month

Realtors in Victoria sold an extra 130 more properties last month, compared to February 2014, according to the Greater Victoria Real Estate Board.

A total of 542 properties were sold in Victoria in February, up from last year’s 412. In January, only 351 properties sold, an increase of almost 200 from the previous year.

Single family homes made the most impressive mark, with 285 sold over the month.

Origin Bakery earns best employer award

A Victoria bakery was awarded with Best Employer in this year’s B.C. Small Business Awards.

“For our business it just means clearly we are doing something right. We value our employees input for our growth,” said Marion Neuhauser, co-owner with Tara Black.

Origin Bakery, with a location on Pandora Avenue, serves up only gluten-free products. There is another location at 110-1790 Island Highway in Colwood. The company has 24 employees.

Black and Neuhauser started with only a summer market stall in 2009. In 2010, they became the first bakery in Victoria to offer exclusively gluten-free product. Neuhauser says they have 18-20 different replacements for traditional flour.

“It’s [gluten-free products] much better than it used to be. The whole reason we went into business was to create a better product.”

An important part of participating in the Victoria Flower Count is knowing how to count blossoms on the trees and bushes that line our streets and gardens.

The Victoria Flower Count has basic guide-lines on flowercount.com on how to estimate the number of blooms on small, medium and large trees and heather bushes.

We spoke with Rick Los, director of horticul-ture at Butchart Gardens for clarification on the dimensions of the trees and bushes.

A small tree, up to 15 feet tall, full of blos-soms, is estimated to have about 250,000 blos-soms. A medium tree is between 15 and 30 feet tall with 500,000 blossoms, while a large tree is over 30 feet tall with 750,000 blossoms.

A small heather bush is around two feet by two feet with 500 blossoms, while a medium heather bush is around three feet by three feet and has roughly 1,000 blossoms. A large heather bush, over three feet by three feet has around 2,000 blossoms.

Flowering plants such as rhododendrons can probably be counted individually, said Los.

“I think the biggest tip I have, is it’s all in fun,” he said. “Don’t be too particular, and underestimate more than overestimate.”

He expects this year’s Flower Count to blow all other years out of the water.

“We’re definitely seeing a lot of early blooms all over, and things just completely a couple

weeks ahead,” said Los. “We’ve never seen so much in bloom here at Butchart this early in the year.”

Women’s transition houses across Greater Victoria will be able to continue helping women in need, thanks to a donation from Royal LePage.

“[The] Royal LePage Shelter Foundation was started up by Royal LePage back in the late 1990s to support local shelters across Canada,” said Bill Ethier, president and managing broker of Royal LePage Coast Capital Realty.

The $42,157.93 raised by Royal LePage in 2014 was split evenly between The Cridge Transition House for Women, Victoria Wom-en’s Transition House, Margaret Laurence House and Sooke Tran-sition House.

All four shelters received half

of their portion of the money in the fall, around $5,000 each. Royal LePage presented them with the rest of the money this week.

“We try to give it out in chunks throughout the year, because they need it as the year goes on,”

Realty has raised almost $200,000 for local women’s transition houses since 1998.

Joanne Specht, manager of communications and fund devel-

opment for The Cridge Centre for the Family, said the centre relies on donations such as this.

“We can’t do what we do unless we have the community’s sup-port,” she said.

The money from Royal LeP-age goes specifically toward The Cridge’s Transition House for Women, which is a place for women with or without children who are escaping violent or abu-sive relationships.

“It feels good to be able to do something that has a direct impact,” said Ethier.

Women also receive support such as counselling or help accessing income assistance or court services.

“Our staff are there to help them with whatever they need,” said Specht.

Good hearing, poor comprehension?The number of people who can hear well, but can’t understand what’s being said, is increasing. This is most evident in conversations and watching television. A newly-developed hearing chip is designed to restore speech comprehension without being noticeable in the ear.

A lot of people have poor comprehension, though they actually still hear well. It becomes noticeable in conversation, watching television and asking family to repeat what’s been said. A potential cause can be undetected loss in the high-frequency range. This means the sensory cells in the cochlea that hear high-range sounds are damaged as a result of circulatory disorders, diabetes, sudden hearing loss or workplace noise. Hearing loss in the high-frequency range makes speech sound muffled and unclear. The person with hearing loss mixes up, or can no longer hear, consonants like s, f, t, k, h and g. Speech comprehension is particularly impaired when there is background noise or when television programs have background music. The dilemma is that people with hearing loss in the high-frequency range do not

consider themselves to have a hearing problem. They can hear deep tones with no issue, and often put difficulty understanding speech down to unclear pronunciation. However, the time soon comes when problems with comprehension become annoying.

A new hearing chip has beendeveloped.

Swiss audiologists have developed a new hearing chip that restores speech comprehension, particularly with hearing loss in the high-frequency range. People can test the new Audéo V system by Phonak simply by calling now to do so. First, a hearing test

and speech comprehension analysis is done. Where inner-ear damage is present, a software program analyzes the difference relative to normal hearing. The test phase in particular is designed to clarify how speech comprehension can be improved in various situations and what role a new technology called “Autosense OS” plays. The chip recognizes where the person being spoken to is located and amplifies only his or her voice, while ambient noise is lowered and the optimum hearing programs are seamlessly adjusted. Thanks to several synchronous microphones, the hearing system can detect sound in all directions and select the direction that speech is coming from within milliseconds. According to Swiss researchers, this significantly augments speech comprehension, especially in conversation.

The space in the Steamship Terminal the museum hopes to rent is currently a concrete shell with pillars. Before the museum would be able to move in, improvements would need to be made.

“We’re hoping that the prov-ince would consider utilizing some of the earned revenue from the building to do the fix-turing of the space,” said Evans.

He estimates the needed improvements would cost

between $750,000 and $1 million – money the museum itself does not have.

“We’re a little society that’s done big things for a long time. But now that it’s been essentially five months without admissions revenue, we don’t have a nest egg to do the tenant fixturing for the building. We need assistance from the province to get that done,” said Evans.

“We’re prepared to pay for all of the exhibit design and con-struction, which is over $1 mil-lion, which we’re raising inde-

pendently.”Madoff said these land-

lord improvements should be included as part of the negotia-tions.

If the province agrees to pay 50 per cent of the cost of fix-turing the space, Evans said the Maritime Museum would be eli-gible to apply for up to $1 million from the federal government’s Canada Cultural Spaces Fund, said Evans, adding that a mini-mum 10-year lease would have to be in place.

Greater Victoria shelters opened their doors on Tuesday after an extreme weather protocol was activated due to nighttime temper-atures falling below zero.

Extra shelter spots were made available with 335 emergency spaces in total.

Our Place offers a place to sleep as well as a warming centre with coffee. Every time the extreme weather protocol has been acti-vated it has been booked solid.

“People with mental health and addictions, a lot of people aren’t able to sleep, so they can at least come out of the cold without dis-turbing the sleepers,” said Grant McKenzie, director of communica-tions for Our Place.

The Cold Weather Protocol sys-tem addresses the shelter needs of homeless people during periods

of extreme weather such as harsh wind, rain, snow and subzero tem-peratures.

“A lot of people think that -1 is not that cold but you have to remember people on the street don’t have adequate clothing such as dry socks and warm boots,” said McKenzie.

Our Place was filled to capac-ity with 30 people using available beds and 85 using the warming sta-tion.

“We’re able to accommodate them and meet their basic needs in an emergency response,” said Jen Bacon, regional co-ordinator for Greater Victoria Extreme Weather Protocol.

In January, the system was acti-vated four times, never in Febru-ary and only once this month.

“This has been a pretty mild spring so I pray it stays this way for the rest of the season,” said Bacon.

Mohamed Ghilan has seen the way his faith is portrayed and the assumptions that come with it. He wants to change that.

The Islamic scholar and doctorate student is holding a number of informative sessions about what Muslims believe and how they live their faith.

“I’d say right now it’s being played out as a violent religion that seeks the oppression of freedom,” he said.

Born in Saudi Arabia and now a Victoria resident, Ghilan has been studying Islam for the last seven years.

“According to Islam law, it guarantees freedom of beliefs. So, it’s odd that this misconcep-tion is being portrayed.”

Ghilan said he feels pressure to raise awareness to prevent the rise of Islamophobia. Islamo-phobia is the prejudice against or hatred of Islam and Muslims.

“It [the media] gives the impression that Muslims are walking ticking bombs,” he said.

Women’s distinguishing tra-ditional head coverings make

them targets for Islamophobia. “For women, it’s hard because

they are visually a Muslim woman. If I have a long beard they will mistake me for a hip-ster.”

Victoria is not innocent of Islamophobia.

Ghilan says Muslims have faced stigma and discrimination here too.

“They do get comments, some people tell them to go home.”

His goal after these Q&A ses-sions is to put a face to Islam.

“I’m hoping for positive. I’ve been going around and giving speeches, it does change per-spective,” he said.

Allan Saunders is the lead minister at First Metropolitan United Church where Ghilan will be speaking on March 17 and 24.

“We saw a growing concern

about the misunderstandings that are taking place in our soci-ety,” said Saunders.

The church hopes to build respect between different reli-gions in Victoria as well as a bet-ter understanding.

“A lot of people don’t real-ize there has been other ways the Muslim community has had some negative things happen, so we think its important to get to know your neighbours,” he said.

Saunders also said newscasts featuring extremists can easily influence opinions.

“It’s unfortunately all too easy to let that taint their Muslim view. We want people to come learn about the differences and similarities between different religions.”

A Victoria teacher is helping students from Glenlyon Norfolk School raise awareness about the brutality of shark finning.

The group, called Fin Free, was able to get a meeting with B.C. Agriculture Minsiter Norm Letnick.

The group will meet with Let-nick on Monday (March 9) to discuss a provincial ban.

Margaret McCullogh, who was recently awarded with the Prime Minister’s award for Teaching Excellence, runs the Victoria chapter of Fin Free, an international group aimed at ending shark finning.

Shark finning involves sharks being pulled, often alive, from the oceans after hours or days

on fishing lines, to have their fins cut off and then thrown back into the ocean.

Sharks then die from suffo-cating, bleeding to death or are eaten by other animals.

In Victoria restaurants, shark fin soup is no longer on the menu.

“We just went around to all the restaurants and pleaded with them to stop selling them,” said McCullogh.

The group is looking to create a ban on the sale of shark fin, provincially.

“We didn’t have a ban in Vic-toria because we didn’t need one, they just took it off the menu.”

That isn’t the case for other places in the province, such as Vancouver or Richmond.

The province claims they

don’t have the support from the Chinese community in launch-ing a ban.

“We’ve had polls done and 74 per cent of the Chinese commu-nity wants a ban,” said McCul-logh.

American states such as New York and California currently have bans on selling and distri-bution of shark fins.

For years now, the Royal Canadian Navy’s submarine fleet has seen more ill-fated than fighting fit, but last week the navy proudly declared one combat ready and another two operational.

The navy says Canada needs its own subs to protect the longest coastline in the world and to be an international player.

Yet after more than 25 years, CFB Esquimalt-based HMCS Victoria is Canada’s only high-readiness sub, and the only Canadian sub capable of firing a torpedo.

Canada’s four-diesel electric submarines remain awash in controversy. HMCS Victoria’s three sister vessels have been delayed by years of unforeseen refits, repairs and accidents.

HMCS Windsor had engine trouble last year. HMCS Corner Brook collided with the ocean floor off the west coast of Vancouver Island in 2012, and HMCS Chicoutimi had a deadly fire in 2004 as it was being delivered to Canada from the United Kingdom.

Windsor and Chicoutimi are now undergoing sea trials.

Critics have called the submarine program an “unmitigated disaster” and second-rate since the subs were bought in the late 1990s.

The subs bought in 2004 for $898 million were supposed to be a bargain, but could end up costing Canadian taxpayers more than double before they are all operational.

Are they worth it?The current fleet has a

remaining life cycle of about 10 to 15 years. So now would be the time to have a serious conversation nationwide, if we want to continue with the program into the future.

Last week’s announcement was a victory for the navy, but the battle won’t be won on these submarines, if they can’t pass the test of time.

Kids ask questions. Sometimes adults feel inadequate if they don’t have ready answers. But when I became a teacher, I learned quickly that there’s nothing wrong with saying, “I don’t know.” Teaching children how to learn is more useful than feeding them facts.

Many parents, though, believe they must appear infallible in the eyes of their children. A U.K. survey found that some moms and dads fear questions such as “Why is the sky blue?” and “Why is the moon out during the day?” Math and science queries were the biggest stumpers.

Researchers questioned more than 2,000 parents before The Big Bang U.K. Young Scientists and Engineers Fair. Many respondents admitted to “furtive researching to save face before answering their child.”

There’s no need for that. My area of training as a scientist is genetics. It’s a huge subject and I don’t always know everything

going on outside my field. I try to keep up by reading journals like Scientific American. People shouldn’t feel that saying “I don’t know” is admitting weakness. The important thing is to look for answers.

What could be better than using a puzzling question as an opportunity to teach your children how to conduct and

analyze research, think critically about information, and gain new understanding? You even get to learn along with your kids. In our computer age, it’s not even as time-consuming as it once was – although there’s a lot to be said for direct observation, poring over an encyclopedia, or visiting the library.

Some folks are too busy to

help youngsters search for answers – but we can at least get them started. If you make it fun, your kids will eventually learn to research on their own, and then you can ask them for answers.

Giving children the tools to learn and analyze is crucial, but it’s often neglected. And that has consequences. Many people don’t understand how science works – its limitations as well as its benefits. This has led to confusion over issues that could have a profound effect on society.

One only has to look at some of the “debate” surrounding global warming to know that incomprehension about science reaches the highest levels of decision-making.

This doesn’t always come from ignorance. Sometimes, it’s a way to exploit confusion or lack of understanding to further a political or corporate agenda. In Canada, we’ve seen attempts to limit, control, or silence scientific findings that may hinder the government’s

economic and corporate agenda.The situation is so critical that

the Canadian Science Writers’ Association wrote to the prime minister urging him to “free the scientists to speak — be it about state of ice in the Arctic, dangers in the food supply, nanotechnology, salmon viruses, radiation monitoring, or how much the climate will change.”

Currently, the federal government must approve all media and speaking requests for its scientists. Clearance is often not given, or is delayed so much that experts can’t speak in a timely and meaningful way.

In an open society, leaders who have nothing to hide and who base their decisions on the best available evidence should have no reason to muzzle scientists, or anyone else.

Just as parents should help children find relevant facts and encourage exploration, governments have a responsibility to make sure we have access to good information.

Iconic B.C. journalist and broadcaster Jack Webster arrived at his famous catchphrase “precisely” on his first day in radio in 1953, when a veteran broadcaster told him if he was going to make it in radio he would need a snappy slogan.

“How about ‘precisely’?” he replied. “Listen to Jack Webster at 6:10 pm precisely! What do you think?”

Webster not only made it in radio but is considered a pioneer of the talk radio format, and after 25 years in radio, “Mr. Precisely” took his hard hitting talk radio style to television; on Oct. 2, 1978 the very first episode of the Webster! current affairs program aired on BCTV at 9 a.m. precisely!

In 1987, after nearly a decade on television, Jack Webster and Vancouver-based BCTV jointly donated 1,150 episodes of Webster! to the B.C. Archives.

Thanks to generous funding from the Taylor Trust, the Royal B.C. Museum and B.C. Archives is undertaking the digital preservation of 350 episodes of the popular current affairs show.

Over the next two years each Webster! episode will take a long journey to a specialized lab where each tape will be inspected, cleaned, repaired and then digitized.

The entire Webster! collection was recorded on three-quarter-inch U-matic videotape stock. Videotapes,

referred to by those in the archival and museum professions as “magnetic media,” are one of the most at-risk media types for cultural institutions to preserve. With an estimated life span of about 40 years, digitization is required or the content of the videos will be lost.

There are two main issues which cause all magnetic media to be at risk for loss: chemical instability and obsolescence.

Chemical instability cannot be stopped; tapes become sticky and if played information will shed off and be lost.

As new video was invented, older tapes and machines became obsolete, and without the correct machine to play a video on, you can’t see the content. Even if an archive is lucky enough to have an old machine, it may be damaged by playing a degraded tape, while at the same time damaging a good tape if the machine isn’t maintained.

It’s a big challenge for large and small institutions, and digitization is only the first step. Just like the videotape, the digital files we choose today will become obsolete, so we have to find ways to preserve the files far into the future.

As a radio broadcaster, Webster was often referred to as bombastic, abrasive, and incisive, and was known to be tough but fair. He was worried how that would translate to television, but in the end found that his gruff, hard-nosed interview style came across better on television than it may have on radio, where viewers could see that a tough question was asked “with a little bit of a sparkle in my eye, or a little bit of a smile.”

Webster considered himself a reporter for the people and felt his job was to help people

understand the issues and hold the policy makers accountable. He would review the laws and legislation

and present it in such a way that anyone could understand the issues.

With the preservation of his

television programs we hope that people can revisit his no-nonsense interviews, hear what leaders in our

community were saying and understand what was important to British Columbians.

Churches in Greater Victoria are highlight-ing social justice issues

around the world and in the community through a series of weekly lec-tures in March.

Today (March 6), Esquimalt United

Church will be pro-viding information on issues facing people in the Bahamas in honour of World Day of Prayer.

“It’s about building

awareness about social issues around the globe,” said Esquimalt United Church Minister Leanne Benoit.

“If people in one part

of the world are hurt-ing, that has an impact on us and it also calls us to respond.”

The service today at 1:30 p.m. was written

by women in the Baha-mas and will be relayed to the group by people in the church.

Various ministries and social agencies in the Bahamas will be discussed and tied into what is happening in Greater Victoria.

There will also be art displays, singing and Caribbean themed food.

Continuing with the Eat, Pray, Love and Learn series, lectures will be held every Tues-day night at a different church, focusing on various issues.

On March 10 at Trin-ity Presbyterian Church in Saanich at 11:30 a.m., there will be a lecture

about the environmen-tal impact of sacred buildings.

On March 17 at St. Peter and St. Paul Angli-can Church in Esqui-malt at 11:30 a.m., the lecture will focus on Aboriginal youth.

“We understand it as our call to reach out and to help people in our community,” said Benoit. “One of the ways we do that is learning what the needs are.”

A convoy of women on bicy-cles going from one craft beer tasting to another will ride as part of Victoria Beer Week.

The tour, Pedalin’ for Pints, also falls on International Wom-en’s Day, Sunday (March 8).

“Victoria’s the cycling capital of Canada, and it’s also the craft beer capital of Canada,” said Rose Lee, co-owner of The Ped-aler. “It just made sense to pair the two [and] do something to showcase women and beer.”

A bike tour beer tasting is a good fit for women, said Lee.

“Women are less likely to want the big drunken beer crawls. We can’t get drunk on bikes, so it really is a tasting.”

The tour will also be a good

way to showcase women that work in the beer industry, said Lee.

One stop on the tour will be Spinnakers Gastro Brewpub, where Kala Hadfield works as a brewer.

“A lot of women say, ‘I don’t like beer,’ [but] there’s such a wide variety of flavours [includ-ing] fruity, citrusy [and] red wine flavours,” said Hadfield. “It’s not just all fizzy, sweet, yellow stuff.”

Lee echoed the thought that there is a craft beer for everyone.

“I think women would be sur-prised that [if] they think they don’t like beer, they will find that craft beer they do in fact like.”

The tour will also go to Drift-wood Brewery, Moon Under Water Brewpub and end at Canoe Brewpub. Tickets are $59 each and include bicycles pro-

vided by The Pedaler, a choco-late truffle and craft beer pairing at Spinnakers, beer samples and snacks at Moon Under Water, a tour of Driftwood Brewery and a tasting and one pint of beer at Canoe Brewpub plus a feature meal from Canoe’s menu.

Participants are asked to meet at The Pedaler, 719 Douglas St. at 12:45 p.m. for a 1 p.m. start. The tour will finish at approximately 4:30 p.m. at Canoe Brewpub. Bicycles will be picked up from Canoe so participants can stay as long as they like.

The ride is approximately 10 kilometre.

All attendees will be asked for two pieces of identification.

The Fairfield Gonzales Community Association is hosting a fundraiser at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria on April 11.

The group will have live local jazz music as well as a silent auction at the Fairfield Gonzales Gala Fundraiser.

“We target the money raised for our youth pro-grams and family programs because those are the

most underfunded,” said Vanya McDonell, Fairfield Gonzales Community Association member.

This year’s fundraiser has an extra special touch. It’s the associations 40th year.

Mercedes-Benz B-Class earns an A in safetyBy Bob McHugh

Mercedes-Benz Canada went (adventur-ously) solo and brought the B-Class (not sold in US) to Canada in 2006, just as did with the original Smart Car.

The tall, compact, front-drive hatchback, is a different kind of Mercedes. Yet many Canadian buyers like it and typically buy about 3,000 of them annually.

We join the B-Class story when it got a modest redesign for the 2009 model year. Styling revisions included a new radiator grille with an extra-large Mer-cedes-Benz star in the centre. The front bumper has a larger air intake and the hood was also modified. Rear revisions included two-piece tail light assemblies, a new hatch release and a new-look rear bumper.

B-Class vehicles have a unique safety feature built-in to its elevated floor-pan design. Mercedes calls it the "sandwich principle” and during a severe frontal impact the powertrain assembly is cleverly engineered to slide downward, under the cabin compartment, to avoid intrusion into the passenger space.

The '09 B-Class came in B200 and the B200 Turbo models. A B200 comes with a 134-hp, 2.0-litre inline-4 engine mated to either 5 speed manual transmis-sion or a CVT (continuously variable transmission) automatic. The reliability

of this CVT is questionable and in 2011 model year vehicles it was the spotlight of a major recall. It can be an expensive repair, if not covered by Mercedes. This torque-rich gas engine is a frugal fuel user that’s rated at 10.5 litres/100 kilometres in the city and 8.6 litres/100 kilometres on the highway with the CVT and using the new 5-cycle rating method. The manual transmission allows slightly better highway fuel economy.

The turbocharged variant of the 2.0 litre engine boasts an impressive 193-hp, and is paired with a 6-speed manual trans-mission or the optional CVT automatic. This engine is rated at 10.9 litres/100

kilometres in the city and 8.8 litres/100 kilometres on the highway with the CVT and using the new five-cycle rating method. So you should get a lot better performance with almost the same fuel economy.

B-Class went essentially unchanged for the 2010 and 2011 model years and was temporarily discontinued for the 2012 model year. It returned as the completely redesigned B250 for the 2013 model year and there were no major changes for 2014.

Standard features in 2013 included a fuel saving auto stop-start system,

LED daytime running lights, leather seating, 11 airbags, run-flat tires, plus Attention Assist, and Collision Preven-tion Assist systems. Yet, it still had an under-$30,000 start price.A new direct-injection four-cylinder turbo engine (208 hp) linked to new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission was the only powertrain combo offered (no CVT). This engine can also produce an impressive 258 lb-ft of torque and it can move a B250 to 100 k/hour in less than eight seconds.

While this engine does like pricey premium fuel, it’s rated at 9.2 litres/100 kilometres in the city and 6.6 litres/100 kilometres on the highway using the 5-cycle rating method. The new auto-matic obviously has an important role in attaining those impressive highway economy numbers.

The Mercedes-Benz B-Class is probably the safest compact car sold in Canada. Its brand-new (2015) start price is still under $30,000, however, popular add-

on option packages can quickly push its end price into the high thirties and this also influences typical resale values.

The Nissan BladeGlider concept will contribute to the prom-ised sizzle at the upcoming all-new Vancouver International Auto show – now just three weeks away.This revolutionary electric car, based on the DeltaWing race car introduced a few years ago, is described by the manufacturer as an “exploratory prototype of an upcoming production vehicle.” Just like the DeltaWing, the BladeGlider features a very different chassis layout – narrow at the front, wide at the rear. The design gives the vehicle a huge aerodynamic ad-vantage of a traditional layout. The roadster has a centrally located driver seat upfront and two passenger seats behind.It’s the first of a number of concepts to be announced for the show at the Vancouver Convention Centre, which runs from Tuesday, March 24 through Sunday, March 29. Hundreds of new production cars will populate the all-new floor layout of exhibition space. Sixty-four singers and dancers from the Canadian College of Performing Arts will join the Victoria Sym-phony for a salute to Broadway.

Broadway Lights will be staged at the Royal Theatre from March 20-22.

CCPA was first invited to perform with the Victoria Symphony a decade ago. That ini-tial concert was a suc-cess and the biennial Broadway concerts have become a tradi-tion.

Conducted by Giuseppe Pietraroia, Broadway Lights jour-neys along the Great White Way with the music of legendary composers Rodgers and Hammerstein, Ste-phen Sondheim, Cole Porter, Andrew Lloyd Webber and others.

The singers and dancers of the CCPA join the orchestra in selections from Okla-homa, the Light in the Piazza, Phantom of the Opera and Beauty and the Beast.

Broadway Lights runs March 20 and 21 at 8 p.m. with matinee March 22 at 2 p.m., at the Royal Theatre, 805 Broughton St.

Tickets are available from the Victoria Sym-phony Box Office at 250-385-6515.

The Salvation Army received the gift of a new truck thanks to the work of the Young Entrepreneurs Soci-ety and the Salvation Army’s Addictions and Rehabilitation Centre.

The new truck will continue to help with services such as weekly food distribu-tion.

“Food picked up by our trucks does not only assist the Salva-tion Army in feeding the homeless and our clients from this centre, but has been an integral part of the food distri-bution network of this community for a num-ber of years,” said Maj. Brian Slous, executive director of the Johnson Street Addictions and Rehab Centre.

The 2015 B.C. Masters Curling Championships began Tuesday in Nanaimo, with curlers from as far afield as Cranbrook and Prince George taking part.

Esquimalt’s Team Danderfer skipped by Ronald Danderfer will represent the Victoria area. The rest of the Esquimalt rink are Third John Coombs, Sec-ond Paul Malnarich, Lead Barry Turner and Fifth Stelio Tedesco.

Eight men’s and eight wom-en’s teams will battle for gold in this 60+ competition which runs from Tuesday until Sunday at Nanaimo Curling Club.

Both of the 2014 champions, Ralph Will and Lorraine Jef-fries, will be returning to defend their titles alongside teams from across the province.

Joining Cranbrook’s Team Will in the Men’s event there are teams from Kamloops, Prince

George, Esquimalt, Qualicum, Chilliwack, Langley and Vancou-ver.

On the women’s side, Jef-fries will be representing Port Alberni against teams from Quesnel, Blind Bay, Port Alberni, the Comox Valley, Langley, New Westminster, Chilliwack and Marpole.

Opening ceremonies took place Tuesday afternoon, with the first draw following.

The finals will be played on Sunday, March 8.

With games played at press time the Danderfer rink was holding on to second place with 1 win and one loss.

While the Masters will be playing their game in Nanaimo, younger curlers will be busy in Cowichan Lake from yesterday through March 8 at the 2015 Tim Hortons B.C. Juvenile Curl-

teams from across B.C. qualified through regional playdowns and will now compete to be crowned the best in the prov-ince.

Entry to the event is free for anyone wishing to take in the games.

Representing greater Victoria will be Team Horvath with curl-ing representatives from both the Victoria and Juan de Fuca Curling Centres.

The team is made up of Skip Alex Horvath, Third Ryan Cas-sidy, Second Evan Scott-Mon-crieff and Lead Alex Stoyles

Team coaches are Don McMullen and Daryl Horvath

The winners will go on to represent the province at the Optimist U18 International Juve-nile Curling Championships in Edmonton from April 1 to 5.

Royals on the road

The Victoria Roy-als split a two-game series with the Seattle Thunderbirds with a win Monday and a loss Tuesday in Western Hockey League action.

The Royals now head out on a four-game road trip beginning in Prince George against the Cou-gars tonight and Satur-day.

Victoria then has stops in Kelowna against the Rockets on Wednesday (March 11) and in Vancouver versus the Giants on March 13.

Victoria will return home for a two-game set against the Vancou-ver Giants on March 14 and March 15.

Victoria kids will get the opportunity to show off their pho-tography skills at the Royal B.C. Museum’s Focus on Nature spring break camp starting March 9 and March 16.

Campers will get to develop their pho-tography skills, learn about photo compo-sition and go on field trips.

“It’s an excuse to get out in nature and go exploring,” said Chris O’Connor, schools and family learning team lead at the museum.

Wildlife Photogra-pher of the Year, Jess Findlay, will visit the camp to share his experiences with the campers.

“He’s really fantas-tic,” said O’Connor. “He’s young, energetic and thoughtful.”

The camp also gives campers an interna-tional look at photog-

raphy.“It’s an international

approach to photog-raphy. There’s a lot of interesting connec-tions to photographs and gets kids thinking about life in another part of the world.”

Campers will also have their photo-graphs included in a mini Wildlife Photog-rapher of the Year inspired display.

The cost is $224 per person and runs the week of March 9 and March 16.

Meanwhile, the Esquimalt Recreation Centre will host a vari-ety of activities to keep kids busy over the break.

A basic camp is avail-able for two weeks of spring break with kids doing different activi-ties everyday such as crafts, games and swimming. For those

looking for more spe-ciality camps, they will also offer an acting and singing camp as well as pottery lessons.

“I think we have these camps to keep kids busy for the par-ents. Honestly a lot of parents have to work and it’s hard for them,” said Regan Pemberton, recreation programer

9-12 can go to a “girls only” camp with activi-ties such as music, crafts and swimming.

For the adventur-ous, the spring break adventure camp offers field trips to places such as IMAX, Play-

Soccer lovers can take part in a half-day soccer camp hosted by national coaches Brett Hyslop and Steph Steiner from 9 a.m. to noon.

Earth Week Festival is coming up on April 25 and 26 at the English Inn, 429 Lampson St.

The festival is free for all ages and features art, music, poetry, food, chil-dren’s activities, a silent auction and more.

It runs from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, and from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 26.

More than 9,000 people have attended Creatively United for the Planet’s Earth Week celebrations since the first festival in 2012.

Creatively United for the Planet Society is a not-for-profit organization run by volunteers who are passionate about the community and the envi-ronment.

Over 30 exhibitors will be at the festival, including the Robert Bateman Foundation, Dogwood Initiative, Miles of Smiles Nature Junior Kindergaten and Raincoast Conservation Society.

There will also be featured artists and performers on both days.

A music showcase occurs on April 25 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., and on April 26 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Twelve different performers will be featured.

Artists such as Richard Wong and Alysha Farling will also be at the fes-tival.

Today my early-20s daughters live in cities. They’ve travelled widely – one backpacking through Southeast Asia, another traipsing around Nicaragua. They understand buses, subways and airports. They’re “city savvy.”

They’ve come along way from their childhood.

Growing up on rural Salt Spring Island, the girls were city innocents.

For example, once when they were very little, we went with a group to see a musical in Vancouver.

Arriving early, a few of us grabbed food in a restaurant and then strolled back along the sidewalks to the theatre. We came to an intersection and as four solid lanes of cars zoomed passed, little Danica looked up with a worried frown.

“I hope,” she whispered above the roar of engines, “someone will stop for us.”

She had no idea that the stoplight would

change, a “walk” signal would emerge and we’d simply walk across the crosswalk.

On a trip to Disneyland a few years later, they became so enthralled with “rides” on the Canadian side of the trip – A ferry with a play area! A bus! Escalators! A moving sidewalk! – they didn’t really need to go to California.

But the girls’ first city bus ride was the most memorable example of rural head butting urban.

This occurred when, with great anticipatory enthusiasm, we decided to leave the car at home and bus to Saanich Commonwealth Pool for swimming with Nana.

We raced off the ferry, over stairs, through passageways, up elevators and into the sunny outdoors to be first in line for the double-decker bus that would take us into town. Everything was in order. We were the first to climb aboard, and therefore got our choice of seats.

Eagerly, the girls selected three spots on the upper level of the bus, right at the front, near a big window. The bus engines revved, the girls looked excitedly around them – as if it were the launch of boats at Splash Mountain – and off we went.

The bus motored onto the familiar highway and within a few minutes the girls settled into the routine, the excitement of a new experience slowly subsiding. Then the bus turned off the highway into Sidney. And stopped to pick up passengers. And started. And stopped. Danica and Sierra’s heads whipped around at me.

“What’s going on?” they demanded. “We’re stopping to get other people who also

want to ride this very exciting bus.” “But we want to go swimming.”“But we are enjoying this new experience! Isn’t

it fun!”They frowned and looked out the window.

They sighed with relief as the bus stopped at a light and they could see the highway again.

Then the bus crossed the smooth, straight thoroughfare (which they knew led directly to the pool) and started puttering through West Saanich.

“What?” they cried in unison. “We could be at the pool by now.”

Their faces took on a grumpy sort of look.About 60 minutes later (it’s a 15-minute drive

via highway) we arrived at the pool, met Nana, splashed in the water, jumped off the diving boards.

“Time to catch the bus back to the ferry,” I announced brightly.

The girls stared at me and turned to their grandmother.

“Please, Nana,” they begged with a touch of hysteria. “We’ll pay you to drive us to the ferry.”

So much for citifying country girls.

A You know you just have to make time, really. I have a blog so I’m usually working on that in my spare time. My husband, he had both of them last Saturday for three hours while I took a sewing class.

Q What is your favourite family activity to do together?

A I think just playing at the park. I take him to Beacon Hill or Cook Street park. He really loves to be outside. Anything outside for sure.

Q What’s the hardest part of having a two-year-old?

A It’s challenging with a baby. He’s good with the baby but he hasn’t quite adjusted so I have to tell him just a minute all the time, whereas before I didn’t have to so he acts out a little because he wants me to put the baby down and pay attention to him.

The Victoria Women’s Spring Expo will take place at the Pearkes Recreation Cen-tre this weekend.

Special guest speakers include Jody Claman from Real Housewives of Vancou-ver and Brad King, author and nutritional expert. Claman, the self-made millionaire, got her start with her own catering com-

pany she started with only an $800 invest-ment.

“What Jody is saying is you can do it too, live the life you dream,” said Virginia Ritchie, producer of the Victoria Women’s Spring Expo.

The event has more than 100 exhibi-tors displaying and selling everything from jewellery, make-up, fashion and home products.

The Port Alberni Port Authority (PAPA) invites proposals for the rental of 970 square feet (or portion thereof) of food services space in the China Creek Marina and Campground Main Facility Building. This space includes the primary food services preparation and service area as well as use of the walk-in freezer and fixtures. This space will be rented on a monthly basis for, at least, the duration of the 2015 prime sport fishing and camping season. PAPA believes this opportunity is ideal for an established business that wishes to extend its reach to a new market segment or an individual who wishes to expand their revenue potential and experience in the food and hospitality sector. While the facility has seen a variety of full service food services, fishing and campground related sundries sales over its history PAPA is open to considering all business propositions to fill this current gap. The extravagant “Hollywood” name lives on in Victoria with three of the top 10 most expensive homes in the city listed on Hollywood Crescent.

The list is part of a much bigger project put on by Point2 Homes, a real estate listing website. Point2 Homes is compiling lists of the most expensive as well as the least expensive homes for sale in major cities across Canada.

“We’re putting them all out there so buyers have a realistic picture of what they can expect to afford in different city centres,” said Linda Moola, spokesper-son for Point2 Homes.

Listed at number one and overlooking the ocean, “Windjammer” as the home is known, boasts a price tag of $2.9 mil-lion. What some may consider small for a million-dollar home, Windjammer has three bedrooms and four bathrooms.

An influence in the price tag, Wind-jammer has won seven construction achievements and renovations of excel-lence awards in 2014 as well as project of the year.

“The key for that is it’s an award win-ning build. Quality, build and location,” said Scott Piercy, listing agent for Wind-jammer.

Runner up is a much larger home with a similar price tag. This home built for a former B.C. premier in 1911, has a square footage of more than 7,000 with 12 bedrooms.

Moola says people are often surprised about what kind of homes they see on the list.

“People have an interest in knowing how far their dollar will go and how much they can afford.”

The list was created not just for enjoy-ment but also a guide for first-time home buyers or those looking to relocate.

“We wanted to show a more realistic view to those first-time buyers or if your looking to relocate that certainly can help,” she said.

Details have yet to be revealed but the announced $7.5 million total commitment suggests the instant rebate scheme will reduce the sticker pric-es for all electric, plug-in hybrid and fuel cell vehicles by up to $5,000.The Nissan LEAF S edition starts at just under $32,000, which, after the expect-ed point of sale price reduction, puts the sedan at a competitive price point alongside small gas-powered family cars. The SV adds a quick charge port to the car, some additional technology

and interior improvements for another $5,000 and the SL adds leather seating and alloy wheels for another $3,000. The Nissan Quick Charge Port (standard on SV and SL) allows charging to 80 per cent capacity in 30 minutes at public charging stations, using a DC fast charger. There will be additional incentives for those installing 220-volt fast chargers at home, which reduce charging time to five hours. The fuel efficiency of the four-door, five-seat LEAF is calculated at the gas equivalent of about 2.0 L/100 kms with a range of around 120 kms on a full

charge. The LEAF, which interestingly stands for Leading, Environmentally friendly, Affordable, Family car, is now in its fifth model year. It topped 1,000 sales in Canada late last year, making it the country’s top-selling electric car.The 2015 Nissan LEAF models include Rear View Monitor as a standard fea-ture; an available hybrid heater system

that provides superior cold weather performance while consuming less energy; “B” drive mode increases regenerative braking during decelera-tion; and a standard charge port light and lock with a charge port door release button added to the intelligent key fob.Enhanced interior features on

the 2015 LEAF model range from a standard leather-wrapped steer-ing wheel to a black interior colour and sun visor extensions. Rear cargo space is 680L with the second row seat upright. There is 850L of cargo space with the standard 60/40-split

rear seat folded down.EV-IT improvements for the 2015 LEAF model include an “Eco route” feature in the available navigation system that includes suggested power-saving alternative routes – plus Google’s local search. The Google Places search func-tion allows Nissan LEAF owners to look for area restaurants, shops and other points of interest and browse user reviews using Google’s POI database to get the most up-to-date information at all times.Next week, we report on the drive and the practicality of ownership.

Mercedes-Benz B-Class earns an A in safetyBy Bob McHugh

Mercedes-Benz Canada went (adventur-ously) solo and brought the B-Class (not sold in US) to Canada in 2006, just as did with the original Smart Car.

The tall, compact, front-drive hatchback, is a different kind of Mercedes. Yet many Canadian buyers like it and typically buy about 3,000 of them annually.

We join the B-Class story when it got a modest redesign for the 2009 model year. Styling revisions included a new radiator grille with an extra-large Mer-cedes-Benz star in the centre. The front bumper has a larger air intake and the hood was also modified. Rear revisions included two-piece tail light assemblies, a new hatch release and a new-look rear bumper.

B-Class vehicles have a unique safety feature built-in to its elevated floor-pan design. Mercedes calls it the "sandwich principle” and during a severe frontal impact the powertrain assembly is cleverly engineered to slide downward, under the cabin compartment, to avoid intrusion into the passenger space.

The '09 B-Class came in B200 and the B200 Turbo models. A B200 comes with a 134-hp, 2.0-litre inline-4 engine mated to either 5 speed manual transmis-sion or a CVT (continuously variable transmission) automatic. The reliability

of this CVT is questionable and in 2011 model year vehicles it was the spotlight of a major recall. It can be an expensive repair, if not covered by Mercedes. This torque-rich gas engine is a frugal fuel user that’s rated at 10.5 litres/100 kilometres in the city and 8.6 litres/100 kilometres on the highway with the CVT and using the new 5-cycle rating method. The manual transmission allows slightly better highway fuel economy.

The turbocharged variant of the 2.0 litre engine boasts an impressive 193-hp, and is paired with a 6-speed manual trans-mission or the optional CVT automatic. This engine is rated at 10.9 litres/100

kilometres in the city and 8.8 litres/100 kilometres on the highway with the CVT and using the new five-cycle rating method. So you should get a lot better performance with almost the same fuel economy.

B-Class went essentially unchanged for the 2010 and 2011 model years and was temporarily discontinued for the 2012 model year. It returned as the completely redesigned B250 for the 2013 model year and there were no major changes for 2014.

Standard features in 2013 included a fuel saving auto stop-start system,

LED daytime running lights, leather seating, 11 airbags, run-flat tires, plus Attention Assist, and Collision Preven-tion Assist systems. Yet, it still had an under-$30,000 start price.A new direct-injection four-cylinder turbo engine (208 hp) linked to new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission was the only powertrain combo offered (no CVT). This engine can also produce an impressive 258 lb-ft of torque and it can move a B250 to 100 k/hour in less than eight seconds.

While this engine does like pricey premium fuel, it’s rated at 9.2 litres/100 kilometres in the city and 6.6 litres/100 kilometres on the highway using the 5-cycle rating method. The new auto-matic obviously has an important role in attaining those impressive highway economy numbers.

The Mercedes-Benz B-Class is probably the safest compact car sold in Canada. Its brand-new (2015) start price is still under $30,000, however, popular add-

on option packages can quickly push its end price into the high thirties and this also influences typical resale values.

The Nissan BladeGlider concept will contribute to the prom-ised sizzle at the upcoming all-new Vancouver International Auto show – now just three weeks away.This revolutionary electric car, based on the DeltaWing race car introduced a few years ago, is described by the manufacturer as an “exploratory prototype of an upcoming production vehicle.” Just like the DeltaWing, the BladeGlider features a very different chassis layout – narrow at the front, wide at the rear. The design gives the vehicle a huge aerodynamic ad-vantage of a traditional layout. The roadster has a centrally located driver seat upfront and two passenger seats behind.It’s the first of a number of concepts to be announced for the show at the Vancouver Convention Centre, which runs from Tuesday, March 24 through Sunday, March 29. Hundreds of new production cars will populate the all-new floor layout of exhibition space. The show floor is growing 25 percent to almost 28,000 square metres by taking over the Ballrooms.Presented by the New Car Dealers Association of BC, the 95th Vancouver International Auto Show is the premier showcase for car enthusiasts, providing the best opportu-nity of the year to see some of the world’s most popular brands alongside exciting new features and displays.New features at this year’s event include the return of

Exotic Manufacturers, Electric Avenue, and a showcase of the newest and most innovative green vehicles and tech-nologies. That area includes a 100 percent electric powered Bigfoot monster truck.
