News from the Bailiwick
By H.E. Dame Patricia Tennyson, Bell , GCTJ, GMTJ
We are now in the hot days of summer and many of our members travelled to Scotland in June for the Ban-nockburn celebrations. I believe all had a great time.
At the last Privy Council meeting we discussed having ladies’ sashes made out of the Templar tartan and then include them in the silent auction after the investitures of the two Priories. I am working on that at the moment and will hopefully have this project completed soon so they can be available for the investitures in November in Southern California and in March in Springfield, Missouri.
It was also decided that the Bailiwick would continue to match the dollar amount collected at the silent auc-tions after each investiture.
The two Priories continue diligently with their charita-ble activities and I know the Priors are very proud of their commanders, preceptors, members and postulants
who have shown tremendous dedication and represent what it means to be Knight Templar.
The Priory of Robert the Bruce will hold a memorial service in August for past members who have passed on and left a void in our membership, but will always be re-membered.
The Priory of Robert the Bruce has nine postulants who hopefully will be invested this coming November. The Priory of St. Columba has one postulant, but there are people who are very interested in the Order.
The Priory of St. Columba will conduct a convent on August 2
nd I had planned on attending thinking the date
was at the beginning of September, but I am afraid I can-not do this as I have a conflict for the August date. I will definitely plan on joining you next March in Springfield.
I will also attend the investiture in Anaheim, California this November.
Our Grand Prior wrote thanking us for our yearly dona-tion to him and also thanks us for all our help. He is very impressed with the work each and every one of us has
completed for the different charities we are so involved with.
There are about eleven volunteers who are working very hard trying to complete a ‘temporary’ building at the N.W corner of the tower where a massive pile of stone was stored. This building will be used as a public toilet and will have wheelchair access. One of the volunteers is John, Balgonie’s piper, who is the tender age of 76 and is working like a man half his age. They receive no pay but are fed extremely well.
Balgonie will send a personal report to the Victor shortly.
Please remember those members who are ill in your prayers and thoughts.
Chevalier G. Allen Cummings continues to update the website and is grateful for additional information from both priories. This is also true for Chevalier Robert Ry-der who needs lots of data for each edition of The Victor.
The next Privy Council Meeting will take place on July 19
th.
Thank you,
Patricia

HMS Queen Elizabeth: Made in Scotland
BENEATH the hulking bow of the largest warship ever built in the United Kingdom, the military band of the Royal Marines played Rule Britannia in front of Her Majesty the Queen. The notes rang across Rosyth Dockyard after the Queen christened the gigantic aircraft carrier, named after herself, with a bottle of whisky smashed against the hull. This was a ceremony redolent with symbolism. Substituting the traditional bottle of champagne with a bottle of malt empha-sised the role played by Scottish shipyard workers and service personnel to construct the 65,000-tonne carrier. A piper played the Mingulay Boat Song. From the Scotsman. http://www.scotsman.com/news/politics/top-stories/hms-queen-elizabeth-made-in-scotland-1-3466559

THEY were the dancing Scots biscuits seen by more than a billion viewers around the world – now sales of Tunnock’s teacakes have soared after their inspired ap-pearance in the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games, according to a leading supermarket. Customers at Waitrose have been stocking up on the bis-cuit after giant dancing teacakes whirled around Celtic Park as part of a tribute to the finest qualities of Scots life. Yester-day the supermarket said that in the 24 hours following the ceremony, sales of the chocolate-coated marshmallow snack soared by 62 per cent. http://www.scotsman.com/news/dancing-teacakes-are-a-recipe-for-soaring-sales-1-3489446

On Saturday the, 21st of June, the Priory of Robert the
Bruce, served an afternoon tea to the senior residents of the British home in Sierra Madre, California. Our Priory has been hosting this tea for the past fifteen years and it is one of our favorite charities we hold during the year. Dame Patricia Tennyson Bell, GCTJ, GMTJ, was instru-mental in getting this event off the ground. She, being a member of Daughters of the British Empire, visited the Home regularly and thought that holding an afternoon tea for the seniors would be a great idea. She presented the idea to the president of the Home and the rest is history.
HISTORY
The British Home in California is a very unique life care facility. It was formally opened in 1931 by a group of Brit-ish women affiliated with The Daughters of the British Empire (D.B.E.) in the western district. Their vision of a place where elderly people could be cared for in a warm and kind environment continues to this day. On Septem-ber 22, 1931, Sir John Adams, Council General of Great Britain, formally opened the British Home. Mrs. Florence Shaefer of Long Beach donated the money for the sec-ond resident cottage. This cottage was named after her, and this building today houses nine residents. Its front veranda, facing Manzanita Avenue, provides a cool and shady spot in the late afternoon. In 1934, Mr. Harry J. Foskett of Pacific Palisades donated the money neces-sary to purchase the lot behind Shaefer Cottage and built the nine room cottage which is there today.
A FINE TRADITION OF QUALITY LIFE CARE
The British Home is a non-profit organization well known for over eighty years of outstanding service to their citizens. The Home is located in a quiet residential area of Sierra Madre in the superb climate and attractive foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains.
The Home's beautifully landscaped two and a half acres contain five separate cottages, each having its own lounge, kitchen, and individual en-suite bedrooms. The five cottages combined provide high quality living for a total of 37 residents. Three of the cottages are developed for current residents in need of additional attention. Nurs-ing staff are on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
AN AFTERNOON TEA
The residents gather in the living room, which is next to the kitchen and dining room, and we provided entertainment and show before we sat down for tea. I, as the master of ceremonies, started with an intro-duction of the Prior Chev. James and Dame Joyce Nethery, I then introduce the residents who have birthday's the month of June. We are honored to celebrate the Birth-day of Sophie, she turned 105 June 3
rd. We had seven Birthdays to cel-
ebrate and after reading their names we all sang Happy Birthday
to them. Piper Christine Orcholski played the great pipes and started things off with three fine Pipe tunes. Kathy Issel provided High-land dancers and her group danced their buckles off for the seniors. They were tap-ping their feet and getting into the spirit of the dances. Chev. K Scott Luekens played his mandolin and sang a song. Dame Sandra Moffitt played the piano and gave some insight to some very famous Scottish tunes that sound alike. At around 3:00 pm Tea was served. The Templar men escorted
the resident women to the tables to be served. All were seated and as Tea was being served, Dame Bonnie McNeill played the Celtic Harp provid-ing a nice back-ground of Scottish tunes. The tea was poured and scones and cookies were served. We were asked a couple of years ago to not pro-vide too much sugar and sweets for the residents they wanted a more healthy serving. We provide all the good-ies with low sugar and serve more fruit. Thank you to the volunteers that help serve and bring the food for the Tea. The Dames and Knights that helped out were Jim & Joyce Nethery, Cheryl Cook, Alicia Moore, Terry & Bon-nie McNeill, Gary Phelps, Sandra Moffitt, Christine Or-cholski, K Scott Luekens, and the two Postulants, Brian Armstrong, and George Mitchell. The residents of the Brit-ish Home are always so happy to have us and we love to be there and see the smiles and happy faces that we can provide for them.

Taquitos,
Beans, Rice and Green Salad. We had guests show-
ing up for dinner 15 minutes before we were to start
serving and we had a steady stream of people for
about an hour. We served Ice Cream cones and
sundaes for dessert and it was thoroughly enjoyed
by the kids and the parents. Thank you to Tim Tyler
who has found
the ultimate

event.
Richard

Christy Orchol-

pipes for the
guests. This
was well re-
ceived and one
young boy who
was there was
on awe of the pipes. They took the time to allow him
to touch them and show him how they worked. A
wonderful time was had in sharing dinner and con-
versation with
those staying
there. It is so
nice to allow
them to share
what they are
going through
and to have a
conversation
that lets them
have a moment
that is a dis-
traction from
what they are going through. Some of the guests
were there for the first time and some have been
there many times as they have a child that has re-
quired multiple treatments or surgeries.
This is an
event that our
members look
forward to each
year and you
always walk
away with a re-
newed commit-
ment to what
we do and why
we do it. Any
time we can of-
fer a meal, aid

we are accom-
plishing what
we are all here to do. Let us be the light that shines
into the world so that by our example others will
want to do the same and help to heal a hurting in the
world.
My heartfelt thanks go out to all of those who were
there to help make this event a success.

The Priory of St. Columba
The Priory of St. Columba has had a great 2014 so far. We had our Investi-ture in Springfield, Missouri in March of this year and four postulants were brought into the Order. It was also a great time of fellowship with fellow knights and Dames. On August 2 we will be having our 2014 Convent in St. Charles, Missouri and are looking for a great turnout in this most historic of his-toric cities. Please see that you read the
Priory of St. Columba's commanders and preceptors reports to see what the Priory of St. Columba is doing around our region. I look forward to seeing many of you soon. H.E. Chev. Mark C. O'Dell, GCTJ,BMTJ Prior, Priory of St.Columba
Preceptory of Ballantradoch
by Preceptor, Chev. Neil Johnson, KCTJ
The Preceptory of Ballantradoch’s second quarter charity was a chance for us to thank a Unit currently serving in Af-ghanistan and let them know how much their service means to us all. TJ Smith’s Unit has been serving there since 4
th
quarter 2013 and is looking to return this fall. We were able to get together over two different days to write personal notes to everyone of the 140 members of his unit. It was a good time and great to get together for this purpose. Notes and mailing costs were spread through the members. We also purchased our own flag pole, filial, and base for the Pre-ceptory banner with costs being spread through the mem-bers.
We were also blessed with the return of JR Bigelow from South Korea in June. He was able to spend over a week with us before heading to his new post in Washington State, where he will continue his work as a psychologist.
Ballantradoch also had a social gathering in June. We celebrated St. John’s Baptist Day on June 28
th with a picnic
gathering. It was a rainy day but a good time was had by all.

On May 20, 2014, five members of the Commandery of Bon Accord assisted teachers at East Elementary School in Ozark, Missouri, with their Around the World festi-
val. The knights and dames in attendance wore Highland wear and answered questions regarding Scot-land. Traditional Scottish music was also played.
