Women Painting Women Vicki Instigated and helped co-curate the inaugural Australian Women Painting Women
exhibition which was held at Burrinja Cultural Centre in Upwey ,Victoria and has now become a Bienniel event.
Giving insights into the relationships between the artists and their sitters (among these Yorta-Yorta soprano Deborah Cheetham, actress Sigrid Thornton, domestic violence campaigner Rosie
Batty and labour senator Penny Wong), the works touch on a variety of contemporary themes while revealing personal stories of reward and loss. Taking its inspiration from the realist painting movement in the United States, the exhibition
celebrates the talent of female portrait artists and the women who sit for them, and is the
second instalment at Burrinja after its successful show in 2016.

“Painting with a live sitter is a kind of vivisection – a process of capturing likeness, as well
as subtler phenomena like presence, countenance and identity. “People like looking at people,”
says curator JD Mittman, “but there’s something deeper to engage with. You’re deciphering the
artist’s relationship with the person in the painting. It’s not just a reflection. It’s storytelling.”
This relationship gets more intricate if the sitter is well known, as with the portraits of Yorta

Artist Statement I am often inspired by people, nature and textiles.
I have always been drawn to realist paintings, Old Masters and especially the 19th Century
painters.
I am primarily focused on painting the figure using beautiful colors color and natural textiles as
a part of my composition.
As a tonal painter trained in the Meldrum Method, which was based originally on the methods of
Velazquez, I use tonality to create form.
I enjoy using Chiarascuro as a way to bring drama to my work and I also employ many layers of
paint to make my colors rich and glowing as if from the inside.
Living in Australia, where the light seems to be different to the rest of the world, I am
surrounded by strong rich colors. I am surrounded by the ocean, peninsula, wildlife and a wide
variety of colored birds. This beautiful natural habitat reflects into my work in a subtle way.
In my figurative paintings, I aim to create a visual experience which feels as if my subject could
walk out of the painting and into the viewer's room bringing a particular moment in time into the
present.
