Redesign and produce the magazine identity for the Leeds based music
magazine 'Vibrations'. There is room for creative freedom but should
reect the tone of the magazine and work o f the contributors such as
writers and photographers.
The budget is for a full process colour cover with black and a pantone
colour of choice by the d esigners every issue.

Concept
To best celebrate and reward the work that the magazine contributors
were doing voluntarily there work needed to be shown off as before the
redesign it was stylistically small. Given the small format of the magazine,
images, notably the cover image above, have been made full bleed. As
well as being rewarding for the photographers it puts the content above
any unecassary design.
To make the magazine more recognisable a new logo, bespoke typeface
and masthead have been produced which transfer onto o ther Vibrations
media, merchandise and the inside of the magazine.

Design Concept
The frame shown on the cover of the magazine has been transfered onto
the inside pages to give the magazine a more recognisable, consistant
dentity inside and out. The frame has also been used as a grid object to
contain bosy copy on the Reviews and Interviews sections.
Fewer images have been used then the previous magazine design,
subsequently giving the remaining images more space to be made bigger.
The larger images are clearer and put the content of the ph otograph rst,
each photographer as well as writer has also been credited for the work.
Layout and Navigation
As many readers pick up the magazine specically to see a review for
a band they are in, have seen or are a fan, nd article throughout the
magazine has been made eaier to navigate. The inclusion of navigation
bars on the outside margin on the right hand page (image bottom
left) means readers can ick to the band they are looking for which
correlates with the content and page numbering. Credits for writers and
photographers have also been included here to make them consistant .
Grid
Margins:Top 8pt, outside 8pt, bottom 8pt, inside 12pt.

ET Howwould youlikeyour music to
bedescribed?
SA Ineverreally knowhowto answerthis
questionto behonest. Idratherpe oplejust
maketheirown minds upwhen they listento
it. Idprobably call it somethingalong thelines
ofindie-folk storytelling;theres areal folk
element to alot ofth esongs but its not always
adening feature,I think. Lyrically I try and
writewitha strongnarrativemost ofthe time,
but its not always thecase. Withthelatest
things weverecordedtheres anemphasis
onatmosphere,trying to createa moodthat
reects thecontent ofthesongs,I guess.
ET Howdo yougo about the
song-writingprocess?
SA Theres no denitivemethod. Sometimes
Ill havepieces oflyrics oramelody inmy head
andi t cantaketheshapeofasongwi thin
minutes,othertimes its moreforcedand you
haveto workat it alittlemore.I usually write
wi thagui tarbut I vebeensat at thepiano
alot recently. However,Ivewritten whole
songs beforewithout beinganywhere nearan
instrument;I wroteEndless Seaona late-night
ferry crossingfromIreland. It startedwithjust
acoupleofwords,but i n my headI couldhear
everything-the chordprogression,melody line,
andsoon I hada wholesong,without actually
makingasound. As soonas I got homeI played
it infull,it was pretty oddhowit cameout
completely formed.
ET Haveyou noticedmuchdevelopment inyour
song-writingsinceyou began,and ifso,how?
SA I liketo think so. Lyrics areabigthing for
meandI tendto spendabi t moretimeonthem
thesedays. Musically,Imless afraidto let the
songs takecourseand change,so Imenjoying
layeringthemand ndingnewsounds. Youd
always hopeyoureconstantly developing-if
yournext songisnt as goodorbetterthan your
last,youprobably needto sit back andquestion
what youredoing.
ET Whats yourfavouritevenueto play at
inLeeds?
Ihave afew. The Brudenell is anobvious choicethesedays forall theright reasons. Thesound
is always great, andNathandoes a brilliant job
ofrunning it -its not just acherishedvenue but
anintegral part oftheLeeds scene. Interms
ofother venues,I likeplayinginslightly more
unusual spaces too. ThenewEP launchat Holy
Trinity Churchwill bethethirdtime Iveplayed
there. Its abeautiful spaceand it lends itself
really well to thetype ofmusic I play. Wedida
singlelaunchlast yearcurated by Anthologies,
insidethechapter housein Kirkstall Abbey,with
no PAoramplicationat all -that felt likearisky
decisionbut it turnedout to beoneofthe best
gigs. Finally,Oporto andShopkeepers gigs
arealways fun. Its brilliant they haveadecent
budget forlivemusic andyet put onso many
freeshows.
ET Theres beenqui teasurgeofonemanand
his guitaracts inrecent years -what makes you
standout?
SA Ivealways saidtheres aninherent aw,or
at least danger,withthe termsinger-songwriter,
ifthats what youwant to call this. Theproblem
lies inthefact that theterm attempts to denote
agenre, whenall it really suggests is that it
concerns someonewho bothsings andwrites
songs. However,thesedays we mostly come
to associateit withagreat deal ofbland/dross
music. Oneof thebigp roblems formeis that
its quiteeasy to pick upaguitar andget your
songs ontheinternet -this may seemlikea
goodthing but it means youhaveto wade
throughqui tealot beforeyoundsomethingof
worth. Iveworkedpretty hardthelast coupleof
years bothon songwritingandlearning howto
holda crowdon my own, which at rst seemed
likethemost dauntingthing inthe world.
But nowthat therecordings areincreasingly
layeredand orchestrated,Ill bedoing more
wi tha fu l l band too.
ET Whats yourbiggest musical
achievement to date?
SA Therehavebeena few.Music formehas
always just beensomethingIve loved-I never
really intendedto get to this point, but with
everythinggoodtha t happens,it seems to spuryouon to thenext. At rst it was acaseofI
havethese songs,Ill writesomemore,th en
it was Ill recordand releaseanEP, andnow
two years downthe lineIvereleased singles,
playedaround theUK,an dImcurrently writing
analbum. I think themost overwhelmingthing
has beentheradio attention;the Radio 1 Maida
Valesessionwas ahugehighlight forme.
ET Do yoursongs always turnout howyou
wantedthem to ordoes thecreativeprocess
changethem?
SA Sometimes youll haveanidealistic sense
ofwhat youwant thesongto soundl i ke,but
youhave to let theprocess runits course
becauseyou might endup withsomethingthat
sounds betterthan whateveryouan ticipated.
ET Howmuchinspiration do youtake from
yoursurroundingarea?
SA Avaryingdegree. Imfromrural North
Wales originally,and bits ofthesongs are
partly inspiredby my memories ofit, and also
by my moveto Leeds andgettingused to
lifeinthe city. But Idsay I takejust as much
inspirationfromthe peoplearound meand the
places I visit.
ETAquick run-downofwhats instore

Concept
To give the magazine a stronger identity and consistant titling for the cover
and page headings a bespoke typeface has been created based on the theme
of vibrations. Vibrations encorporate wanted sounds and noise distortion.
The letterforms have been based on this concept and take inspiration from
diagrams, waveforms and music visuals.
Application
Within the headings 'noisy' letters have been mixed in at random to the
'sounds' (normal letterforms) to create a visualisation of what music is, a
combination of sounds and noise.
Headings have been applied to articles consistantly in the pantone colour
for each issue, photographed above shows April 2012 issue featuring
Pantone 201C.

their website which features all reviews and PDFs of the magazines. The
twitter feed which directs readers to the website has also been updates
with the new masthead logo, as well as an issue specic icon featuring the
cover image of the current issue.
iPad Application
A proposed iPad application for tablet users and magazine readers has
been designed. The app includes all the articles from the current issue as
