PROSPECTS

The 13 lettermen who will greet Coach Perry on opening practice day will be the smallest number of returning letter winners that the Falcon coach has had in four seasons.

Along with the monogram winners will be 22 candi- dates who were members of the 1958 squad. Most of these men saw only token action last year but all of them know the Perry system and most of them are at the positions in which they started as freshmen. Then there are 18 sophomores. Many of this group have the poten- tial to move into a regular job with a bit of experience. Or at the least they will supply the reserve strength that is so important at several positions.

Perry probably has the best collection of ends in the MAC. Tom Colaner, a MAC choice, and his colleague, Jerry Roberts, a second team choice, will be hard to un- seat. Lettermen Ron Blackledge and Clarence Mason will push hard while sophomore Dick Newsome might find a place, especially on defense. Transfer Larry Smith is a top notch prospect.

The line spotlight has to focus on big tackle Bob Zimpfer, an all-Ohio and all-MAC selection. Zimpfer is one of the finest in the mid-west. Bob Bird is only other letter winner but juniors Al Kebl and Ralph White may be a couple of surprises. Sophomore Jerry Croft leads a pack of hefty first year men that push the scales any- where from 225 to 260.

Guard is one of Perry's worry spots. True, there are three lettermen but seniors Chuck Ramsey and Dan Roberds have the smallest playing time among the re- turnees. Junior Jerry Colaner showed last year that he was a comer. From this trio, Perry must get some top- notch performances because he then turns to the sopho- more ranks with Mervin Ward the top choice. Junior Joe Spilewski may be a comer for the defensive unit.

Center is another troublesome spot. Gone are three pivotmen who carried the load for three seasons. A re- building job is necessary here with sophomore Ray Kwiat- kowski, a defensive demon, the best choice. Ron Williams, winner of the team's most improved trophy in the spring, will be pushing while senior Glenn Fitch could be in the running.

The starting line will average about 205, have aver- age speed, could be more potent defensively than offen- sively but will need to get some help from the reserve ranks. Injuries at key spots early season would hurt.

There are only four returning lettermen backs and they look like the starters. In quarterback Bobby Colburn, Perry has one of the MAC's best. He throws well (led the league with .529 average last year), can run the club well and also handles the punting. Jerry Dianiska is as capable fullback as there is around the MAC. He picked up 463 yards last year and this could be even a better year.

Bernie Casey and Chuck Comer are the halfbacks. Casey has plenty of potential. He runs the 100 in 9.8 and was one of the MAC's leading pass receivers. Look for him to repeat in this category. Comer, a punter and kickoff specialist, might have to hustle with sophomores Russ Hepner, Al Junior and Joe Nussbaum all top flight prospects. Jim Andrews, Dick Vura and Bobby Young are the reserves of last year and they could come into their own to really give this spot some backing.

Offensively, the Falcons have averaged 346 yards per

Page 7: Vi - lib.bgsu.edu · BOWLING GREEN STATE UNIVERSITY Edited and Compiled by DON A. CUNNINGHAM Athletic Publicity Director CONTENTS Directory and General Information 1959 Schedule 1

game over four seasons. Perry will be out to keep this mark and if he Chooses to use the air the offense might be even more potent. He will be striving to improve the defense which last year gave up more (only 222.4 per game) than any other Perry outfit.

Just count on another well-coached Perry team. If the depth comes, the Falcons will be working toward their fifth straight winning season, and in the running for the MAC title.

MEET

THE

COACH

*-■■- *.

:'i:s::C mgmam

At the 1958 football ban- quet, President Ralph W. McDonald remarked, "Doyt Perry is probably the finest addition to the university staff that we have made during- this administration." **■ I

The BG; president could Iff' readily verify this with a ' look at Perry's fabulous win- loss record of 28-4-4. Not < only has the former Bowling Green graduate had winning teams but has brought to the campus an outstanding staff of young coaches and instructors and a fine group of students, who have ex- celled in the classroom and on the football field. Along with the gridiron success, a winning spirit has developed among students, alumni and Falcon sport followers that is comparable to that of any other institution in the Midwest.

With the exception of Bud Wilkinson at Oklahoma, Perry's four year record is unexcelled in National Col- legiate Athletic Association circles. Against non-confer- ence opponents, Perry has 12 straight victories without a setback. In the MAC, the record reads 16-4-4. Last year was the first the Falcons had lost more than one game in any Perry season.

In his first season at Bowling Green, Perry brought the Falcons from the MAC cellar to a championship con- tender before losing 7-0 to Ara Parsheghian's Miami eleven. The Falcons had a 6-6 tie with Kent for an over all 7-1-1 mark.

The 1956 season was a banner year for Perry and the Falcons. By tying Miami, 7-7, the Falcons went on to take the MAC championship, the university's second unbeaten-once-tied season. Perry was named Ohio's Coach of the Year and was winner of the Columbus Touchdown Club award for Ohio's outstanding collegiate coaching- effort. The Falcons were voted Ohio's top team.

In 1957 the BeeGees ran into ties with Western Michigan and Ohio U. and a 13-7 loss to Miami and had to take runnerup honors in the MAC, deadlocked with Marshall.

Last season was BG's poorest showing in the MAC when losses to Miami and Kent dropped the Falcons to third in the league. The Falcons, however, continued their dominance of non-MAC foes by defeating two major college standouts, Dayton and Wichita. The 33-6 rout of Ohio U. was Perry's 100th gridiron win in 16 years of head coaching.

Perry has developed 12 all-Ohio and all-MAC selec- tions. End Jack Hecker (1956) and fullback Jack Giroux (1957) participated in Blue-Grey games.

But being a winning coach is nothing new to Perry. Ever since he received his degree from BG in 1932, the diminutive Falcon 3-sport star has turned out winning teams.

After four years of successful basketball and track coaching at Lorain Clearview, Perry instituted football in 1937 there and in six years had a 32-9-4 record, includ-

ing four league championships. His basketball and track records at Clearview were even better than his football mark.

In 1943 Perry moved to Upper Arlington as head football and basketball coach. His first football team at the Columbus suburb had a 7-2 season and the basket- ball team was undefeated until semi-finals of the district tournament.

After a 3-year U.S. Navy hitch, Perry returned to Upper Arlington in 1946 but limited his coaching duties to football. In the next five years, Perry had two unde- feated teams and won or shared the Central Buckeye title four times.

In 1951 Woody Hayes selected Perry to join him in his initial year at Ohio State where he served four years as backfield coach and was considered by Hayes as the offensive statistical brain of the 1954 Rose Bowl and Western Conference champion Buckeye squad.

During his undergraduate days at Bowling Green, Perry was an outstanding athlete. He was quarterback on the 1929-30-31 teams that went 18 games without a loss. He won all-NWOC honors for two seasons and all- Ohio mention as a senior. He was a regular forward for three seasons in basketball and finished his 9-letter career with three awards at shortstop.

He received his secondary education at Hartford high in Croton (Licking County) Ohio where he was a 3-sport participant.

Mrs. Perry is the former Loretta Zeroll of Elyria. They have three children, Judy 18, a BGlSU sophomore, David, 12, and D. L., 8.
