Promoting Citizenship EducationVFW annually recognizes the nations top classroomelementary, junior high and high school teachers whoteach citizenship education topics regularly teaching(at least half of the school day in a classroom environ-ment) and promote Americas history, traditions andinstitutions effectively.
Teachers who promote civic responsibility, agetiquette and patriotism are prime candidates for thisaward. For example, do you know a teacher whoplans eld trips to city hall or organizes communityvolunteer projects? Maybe you know an instructorwho invites veterans into the classroom to discusstheir military experiences. Perhaps you are familiarwith a teacher who fosters the development ofdemocratic values and beliefs through specialprojects. If you know of such a teacher, honor himor her today with the VFWs National CitizenshipEducation Teacher Award.
How Does the Contest Work?Based on the nominees submitted, VFWs localchapters, called Posts, will recognize one outstandingteacher in grades K-5, 6-8 and 9-12. Posts thensubmit these winners names to their District-leveljudging, who will forward their winners to the
Department (or state) level. After judging, eachDepartment then forwards the names of its winnersto VFW National Headquarters for considerationin the national awards contest.
Who is eligible?All current classroom teachers (teaching at leasthalf of the school day in a classroom environment)in grades K-12 are eligible. Previous state andnational VFW winners are ineligible. Nominationscan be submitted by fellow teachers, supervisorsor other interested individuals (not relatives).
Self-nominees are not eligible.
How are teachers nominated?Fill out the nomination form contained in thisbrochure. In 350 words or less, describe whyyou feel your nominee should be selected.Describe the teachers innovative teachingand resource development methods, as wellas his or her dedication to education. Please
submit your completed nomination form andsigned essay to your local VFW Post. Checkthe phone book for Post locations or callVFWs Citizenship Education Department at(816) 756-3390 to nd the Post nearest to you.
All Post-level nominees, if they win, shouldprovide a one-page resume, up to fvepages of documentation of their teachingexperience (references, news articles) anda head-and-shoulder photo of themselves.
When is the deadline?Nominations must be received by November 1by your local VFW Posts, which conduct judgingfrom November 2-15.
What are the National awards?VFWs National Citizenship Education TeacherAwards include the items below:
A national $1,000 Past Commander-in-ChiefJohn Smart award for each of the top K-5,6-8 and 9-12 teachers for professionaldevelopment expenses.
$1,000 award for each winningteachers school. Plaques for both the winning teacher
and school. An all-expenses-paid trip to attend a
VFW and Ladies Auxiliary NationalConference.
