YOU CAN NOT FORCE IT!
YOU CAN NOT ASSUME IT!
YOU DO NOT HAVE IT!
If another driver fails to give you the right of way in an emergency
vehicle…
Right of Way
![Page 12: Vfis show mod vii](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022081720/54bb2e544a79592d118b457f/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Emergency Response Driving
SIPDE System– Scan → see the big picture– Identify → potential hazards/problems– Predict → space/time relationships– Decide → course of action (2.5sec)– Execute → technique for maneuvers
![Page 13: Vfis show mod vii](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022081720/54bb2e544a79592d118b457f/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Emergency Response Driving
Five Visual Habits1. Aim High in Steering2. Get the Big Picture3. Keep Eyes Moving, Scan4. Make Sure the Other Drivers See the
Emergency vehicle → eye contact5. Identify an Escape Route
![Page 14: Vfis show mod vii](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022081720/54bb2e544a79592d118b457f/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Use of Emergency Lights and Siren
Signal two basic concepts:
1. They notify other drivers that an approaching emergency vehicle is operating in an emergency mode.
2. They request other drivers to yield the right of way to the emergency vehicle in accordance with state and/or local law.
![Page 15: Vfis show mod vii](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022081720/54bb2e544a79592d118b457f/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Make sure you are seen and heard.
• Lights
• Sirens
• Horns

Emergency Dispatch Protocols
• Agencies usually have defined response guidelines for the emergency vehicle operator to follow. – These may include light & siren usage, response
speeds, number of vehicles and other locally specific policies.
![Page 22: Vfis show mod vii](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022081720/54bb2e544a79592d118b457f/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Space Management
• Establishing a cushion of safety on all sides of an emergency vehicle is essential to safe operation.
![Page 23: Vfis show mod vii](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022081720/54bb2e544a79592d118b457f/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
Space Management
• Following Distance
4 Second Rule at 40 mph or less
5 Second Rule Above 40 mph• Rate of Closure – vehicle type, road conditions, weather• Blind Spots Alongside• Overhead Clearance – commercial canopy's, bridges• Ground Clearance – under vehicles• Bridges – local, state, federal• Traffic Closure from Behind
![Page 24: Vfis show mod vii](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022081720/54bb2e544a79592d118b457f/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
Rate of Closure-Yielding
• Vehicle Speed Outruns Siren’s Effectiveness• Blocked Field of View• Misinterpretation of Direction of Siren Sound• Hearing Impaired Drivers• Inattentive Drivers• Drivers Distracted by Loud Music, Cellular
Phone, Kids, Stress, Road Rage• Aggressive Driving
