    Introduction by Robert Hand

that, including veryma!~j-ial like !ha! of Ptolemy's Book III

We also have the last chapters of Book II left over from the last\'olume of Valens (Volume VII. Project Hindsight, G,-""k Track)Chapter 38 deals with marriage and contains many aphorisms relatingtn the suhjecL 'Ve also have some lots we have not soen before in

These three chapters are quite typical of the kind of material thutnne Cllcountcrs in both Greek and Medieval astrology. material that ispresented in the form oflists of astrclogical conditions with lillIe or noe'plan~tilln a . , tu why each aphorism should have the meaning it do~,Sume arC derivable from basic astrological symbols: many others arenOLi! appears that we ru-e simply going to have to deal with Iheseinmuch the same w~y I1ml Hindu or Vedic astrology deals with the yogas,or a~trological combinations. h. is to be hoped that at some time in thefuturc we will be able to under:stand the principles underlying these, butthis is going to have be the result of both sv~tematic analysis andexperimental apphcation_However, there i,,,nelhing that must be saidhere and how. This is not the first place where this has been said. but

it bears frequent repetition. These aphorisms in many cases stateextreme manifestations thai could only be expected to manifest in theseways when there arc many indications pointing in the same directionand when there are no countervailing conditions. Each aphorism~.cri~san-astrologicalconditionwhichte':'d,tomovethelifeof(he1J\\t)vejn a certaindirection_ ThB degree of movement in that directiondepends on the other indications in the chan. If an iudication is stronglycounteractedthen one might expect only the mildest torm to manifest, frequently a form in which the literal actions indicated by the aphorismtake pJace either on a metaphorical level or express themselves as aninward psychological state thar lead!; to no action

This understanding is ,,,pecially important with regard to tire lastchapter of Book II on violent deaths. Here we have several examplecharts and the principles whieh form the lmsi, ofajudgment of viol en tdeath. Most interesting is the pairing of planets based on rulcrships ofsigns that areeight signs from each other. The ruler of the eighth signis said to destmy the ruler of the first sign, U s the eighth sign is the~ighth, hou&C when the first. si?n rise~ or is the, sign of'tlie Lor ofFm1une.For example, Scorpio IS the eIghth sign from Aries, so Marsis, said to destroy il,elf hec3tlse it rules bo[hsign,_ Sagil13rius is theeighth sign from Taurus, so in this respect Jupiter is said to destroyVenus. In each ca:;e the likely causes of deatb are described. A numberofsamplechanslllt'~ntootoiJlu~tratetheprineiplEs

However, as we move to Book ill, one of the shorter books of theAnthology, we come to something quite unique, a detailed exposition ofthe various means of cQmpu~ing life e~pe

o n e of two basic techniques. The first of is exemplified by Plolemy inBook III of the Tarabiblo. Ttis based on finding a particular planct.usually the Sun or Moon, called ill Greek apnetes, for which we use theAnglicized form, aphcta. However, the basis of the method is to direct.using a systemofprilllary directions. the aphotic planet to a positioneitheroccupie.doraspectedbyanotherplanet.usuallyamalefic,calledwnen the directed reaches such a death

Jt also consists of finding the apheta. But the le~hniquc does not inyolvedirectingthe aphera. Rather it requires that one find a particular ruler ofthe aphcta, the ruler of lh~ bound or term. The bouru:! rul~r

with which this wmer is familiar, vatens destres.us to use a variety ofapproachcsandtoseekaroongthemthosewhich.concurinindicatingaparticular period of time. If any of these techniques do tum out to beuseful, it is highly probable that IImultiple approach such as the oneValemshows us here is going to be th e most useful. One note: no oneis going to be able to sit down, reed thts bookeod become an expert onr~~=i~!tl~=~~~r~~~l;ec::n~!:t~~n~ri!~::~are going to yield whatever results may come from this material

In chapter 2 of this book we have one of the most potentiallyrevolutionary of any of. the discoveries we haw; made in ProjectHindsight. We see that Valcns may have used two different types ofhousesforlwodifferentpurpose5.1nalloflhechartslhalwehave,~nthus far the houses for interpretation are whole signs measlllll':nromeither the Ascencam or the Lot of FOnWlC as Horosiwpos . Tilebeginnings of the houses are thc beginning of the signs, and th e endingsof the houses, th e endings of th e signs. The Midheaven computed thel-\'lI}'illodemastrologersdoastheinterceptoftheeclipticandmeridiancircle is not used as the cusp ofa house, But in chapter 2 he introducesa system absolutely the same as the one usually attributed to Porphyry, but which we have seen even earlier in Antiochus of Athens. Valensisearuer yer even than AntiOChU5. However, Valens uses these house onlyfor th e determinatioo of the strength of planets in them. The meaningsthat are associated with houses are to befcund connecied, not wirhtbesequadrant houses, but with the whole-sign houses. Could it be that theentire confusion regarding houses in astrology ever since has been theresult of tryingto combine two completely different 5eLS of criteria forbouses into a single system, when in fact they should have met by twodifferent types of houses? OJ was valens in 3 transitional period whenthe older type of house, equa l or whole-sign, was giving way to aquadrant system with the Midheaven as the cusp of the tenth house, andthe Ascendant as the cusp of the first, with the intermcdiate reusesderivedfrom\'ariOU5kindsoftrisectionofthean:sbe\',\'~nthehorizonand meridian circles. When Valens cernes to directing to and from theangics,wef1Ildthat.hcuscsthctrucMidheavcnandtheoppositepoint,the r.C, in preference to tte potots in square to the Ascendant. Vatensmakes 3 point of this on several occasions in his discussions ofdircctiollS_Sowefindthcquadranttypcofhouscusedfordirectionsaswell as estimating strength, but not so f3I for house interpretation

Actually we have exactly this same ambiguity in Ptolemy. It is quite

    11/96

apparenttffiltPtolemy, insofarasheusedhousesatall, usedeitherequaior whole-sign houses. Bul when he discusses directions, he also workedwith true horizon-meridian quadrants. Ptolemy also seems to have keptthe house-logic for directing separate from the house-logic ofinterpretation. Should we gobaclc to this'! I think that this is sometllingthat we do have to look 31

In Chapter 3 we have an extremely obscure discussion of latitudesandl"incls.Itcontains31heoryofcxaitationsthaiisunlikcanythingwehaveseen. It suggests that in at least someonc's rmod, exaltations wereoriginally points of most elevatedlatitude. This makesno astronornicalsense whatsoever, but there is probably something here we do notunderstand

Chapter 5 is on sect and. reinforces what we already know fromAnLiochus of Athens and other sources. However, after some briefcomments on sect, the text resumes discussions of aphests and lifeexpectancy. itisapparenttha\he:rewehave~notherplacewherethelexlhas been somewhat scrambled

Chapter 6 introduces yet another system ofbaundsor term s, onewhich we de not believe is reported from any ether source. It is also notclear that Valens usedit at all. it may just be a n eo reu ca t exercise inastrological reasoningln Chapter 7 he resumes the discussion of life-expectancy withadditional methods of computing this. This peculiar tendency to alternatea main tapic with other, largely umelmed topics, is another indication ofthe random "editing" of the text.

In Chapter 8 we have a very obscure and probably somewhatgarbled account of something that may have teen related to or led toninth and seventh harroonic charts.

In Chapter 9 once again Iifcexpectancy computations resume addingmethods based all New and Full (Whole) Moons prior to birth This isfollowed by Chapter 10 an tnLtine of Hermes, which then resumes themainthcmeoftheboak.InChapter IImore techniques on the aphetaThe last twa chapters, 12, and 13, introduce new material on planetaryperiods ardtheir use in computing length of life.lcanolllysaytlilltinthisintroductionihaveoruytouchedupousome of the bighlights of what is in this book. It is one of our shorterpieces, but the material in it is among the most dense we have seen. Thefull implications of this material will take much time fOI us to work out.

Translator's Preface by Robert SchmidtTIle third hook of Vettil1s valens' Anrho{ogy has leogth of life as itsgcncrertop;c. Not sirmrisingly, the aphetic (01' directive) methotl is thedominant procedure-discussed. In Paulus and other Greek astrologersthi, is also called'themethod ofcircumalllbl1iations. Even though thecentral term apnens is a very common Greek word meaning 'releasing','discharging", 'hurling a'way', etc, I still do not that we haveunderstood its exact specitication in However, there iSllluch in Valens that is very suggestive, and we hope to be ableto write a general note on this word after We have dealt with thismethod in the third book of Ptolemy's Tctrahiblo.r. Additionally, Valenshas reported a numbcrofintriguing and apparently ancient supportingtecilIlique, for determining length of life.

Againtherc is evidence of manuscript corruption, According to textcuitorPingree, the text has undergone numerouseditings and revisionsever the ccmuries, which may account for its present uneven charac ter

As a result of some of Val em;' remark> in this book, we have beenable tll c'lablish that he and other Hellenistic Greek asrrclogers spent"great deal of time trying to interpret the earlier root text of Necbcpsoand Petosiris. Valens constamly descrillesthe material in that book asmustikm, or enigmatical, andheisev"nsu'pi~ious"rtheintention' "rthose earlier astrological writers in writing in that fashion. He himselfprefer,; to write more openly and with numerous examples. Theambiguity in the earlier text can even effect such basic concepts as theLot of fortune. We are told that there was considerable difference ofopinion Over how to calculate it for night births

Accordingly. it is quite possihle that some m mo"t of the divergentand occasionally inconsistent teachings of Hellenistic astrology may b ea result of the variant readings that later Greek astrologers made ofafundamental writtel1 lex/of Egyptian origin----that is, the work anrtbut edto Nccbepso alld Pelo, iris, and evidently composed or translated intoGreek around 200 B.C.E. I have also found this choice for length O f life to have been entwined'in a variety of ways by the ancient.>, but I have made my own judgmentafter conducting an investigation based on experience, amI I believeth atit is more mti_,factory than most. For in the 13th book, after theprooemium andthedispO$ition ofthez6idia, the king' attacks the Lolof Fortune from the Sun, rbe Moon, and the Horoscopos, which hemostly works with and makes mention of throughout the whole book, and which he judges to be a supreme place.' Concerning the Lot ofFortune, he has indeed presemed theinversion and reversal as a riddle

Different lwrirers] have said different tbiugs about this thought, butit seems to me that for a diurnal nativity one should take degrees fromthe Sun to the Moon and an equal amount from the Homsiwpos. However, for a nocturnal nativity, as often as the Moon is above theearth (that i;" up to the point where it sets), one should rake from it tothe Sun and an equal amount Irolll the IJiJroskopos: but after theMoon's sening, from the Sun to it.' aphesis, apheta, aphetic: I.lphesi.l, apheles, aphelikm, Aphcla is aLatiniud form of aphelh Derived from aphesis which has beenreplaced by the word 'pm",gntion' in 13ter literature, uh,huugh the twowords do not have the same root meaning, Hence aphela = prorogator.and aph.etic = prorcgatcry. Aphesis is actually a 'releasing' or'discharging' or 'starting", literally 'a hurling away !lorn', The wordwas laler also replaced by the term 'hyleg', wIDell is conceptually verydifferent meaning the 'gi~'eroflife', although the usages of the hylegand theapheta make, them functionalcquivalents,We are not yet secure enough in the exact meaning of the word togive it a real English tran~J8tion, however, these slightly latini1.ed formsare found in later post-Greek ustrologicalIitcrature. $eeTranslator'sPreface.
