1. Bonded labour
Even as Tamil Nadu accounts for the largest number of bonded labourers
identified and released since the Bonded Labour (Abolition) Act was passed in
1976, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts continue to top the list in the State
every year, often releasing migrant labourers from Andhra Pradesh and western
Odisha.
The total number of bonded labourers rescued between 2005 and 2014 was 3,776.
There has been an increase during last year with 940 releases, the highest in the
last years.

2. Vector-borne diseases on the decline in Tamil Nadu
Except for Japanese encephalitis, cases of other vector-borne diseases such as
malaria, dengue and chikungunya have registered a decline in Tamil Nadu in the
last three years.

3. Salem first district to collect 100 per cent data under NERPAP
Salem has achieved the distinction of being the first district in the entire country to
register cent percent data collection under the ongoing National Electroal Roll
Purification and Authentication programme (NERPAP) of the Election Commission of
India.
“Salem registered this achievement to become the first district in the whole of India to
successfully complete the data collection process.”
4. Chief Minister
About a year ahead of Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, AIADMK general secretary
Jayalalithaa took over again as Chief Minister in a swift swearing-in that lasted about
half-an-hour.
Ms. Jayalalithaa gave the official nod for five schemes estimated at over Rs.2,000 crore
benefiting road users, the urban poor and women.
The major thrust will be on urban and rural roads. She allocated Rs.1,000 crore for
urban roads, to repair those dug up repeatedly by various agencies such as Metrowater or
damaged in rain.
NERPAP is an exercise in progress to like the Elector’s Photo Identity card with
the Aadhaar number of the registered voter with the objective of creating an
error-free identification system in the country, especially by removing
duplications.

1. Clean Ganga project
The Rs.20,000 crore Namami Ganga project is spread over five years and covers 41
tributaries of Ganga. Rs.7272 crore has been set aside for interventions in existing, defunct
projects while Rs.12,728 crore has been allocated for new initiatives.
The National Mission for Clean Ganga that has been assigned the task of cleaning the
river, is focussed on abatement of pollution and has designed its interventions around this.
2. Modi to launch three pro-poor schemes
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch three social security schemes relating to
insurance and pension for the poor.
Pradhan mantra Suraksha Bima Yojana
Accident insurance worth Rs.2 lacs at just Rs. 12 per annum
For all bank account holders whose age is between 18 to 70 years.
Insurance also covers permanent disablement due to accident.

Atal Pension Yojana

Monthly pension will be based on your contribution i.e., from Rs.42 to Rs.210 per month
for entry at 18 years.
One can avail monthly pension of Rs.10,000 to Rs.5,000 from the age of 60 years.
3. Assam included in Bill for land swap with Bangladesh
The Centre reversed its decision on excluding Assam from the purview of its Bill on
exchanging land with Bangladesh. The constitution (119th Amendment) Bill, 2013, which will

4. Air pollution soars in Mysuru city
Alarm bells have stated ringing over the increasing levels of air pollution in Mysuru,
which was considered one of the least polluted cities a few years ago.
Health hazard
Particulate matter (consists of airborne particles in solid and liquid forms) poses a serious
health hazard and triggers respiratory diseases. Also, sulphur dioxide (SO2) and Oxides of
Nitrogen (Nox) pollution have been getting higher in last five years.
5. Army gets Akash missile
The Army inducted the first regiment of the indigenously-developed Akash surface-to-air
missile system, capable of targeting a multitude of aerial threats up to a range of 25km.
The Akash system can simultaneously engage multiple targets in all weather conditions
and has a large operational envelope from a low altitude of 30 metres to a maximum of up to
20km and can also engage Unmanned Aerial Vehicles.
6. CNR Rao conferred with Japan’s highest civilian award
Eminent scientist and Bharat Ratna awarded Chintamani Nagesa Ramachandra Rao –
conferred with order of the Rising sun gold and silver star.

Shashi Kapoor – an actor par excellence, the man who brought Hollywood and Hindi

15. Justice Cyriac Joseph appointed NHRC acting chief
National Human Rights Commission Member Justice Cyriac Joseph was authorised to act
as the Chairperson of the Commission until the appointment of a new chairperson in place of
Justice K.G.Balakrishnan who has completed his tenure. Justice Balakrishnan, the former Chief
Justice of India, completed his tenure as the sixth and the longest serving NHRC Chairperson.
In the category of improving delivery of public service for the
initiative „Sabar Shouchagar‟ country.
He was a renouned Hindu spiritual leader and teached who had inspired the
formation of a global non profit organisation called chinmaya mission.
The Dadasaheb phalke award for lifetime contribution to cinema, was
instituted in his honour by the government of India in 1969.

16. Kamath to head BRICS bank
India has named private banker K.V.Kamath as the first head of the new development
bank the BRICS group of emerging market economies is seting up. Mr.Kamath has been
appointed as the head of the BRICS bank.
India has conveyed the decision to nominate Mr.Kamath for the BRICS bank presidency
to other BRICS nations- Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa. Mr. Kamath‟s five year term is
to be followed by a Brazilian and then a Russian.
17. Politicians lose space in govt. ads
In a landmark judgment holding that tax payer‟s money cannot be spent to build the
“personality cults” of political leaders, the Supreme Court restrained the government from
publishing the photographs of political leaders, Ministers or prominent persons in government
advertisements.

Ministry of Minority Affairs launches “USTTAD” An initiative to Augment and Preserve
Rich Heritage of Traditional Arts/Crafts and Build Capacity of Traditional
Artisans/Craftsmen.
The BRICS had agreed to set up the $100 billion development bank last year,
a step that was at the time seen as one that could challenge the dominance of
the West in the international financial system. The focus of the international
financial system, however, has since then shifted to China‟s initiative, the
Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).

19. India way behind on WHO health targets
India has met only four of ten health targets under the Millenium Development Goals
(MDG), and has made next to no progress on another four, according to new data from the
World Health Organisation. The deadline for achieving MDGs runs out this year.
In India, life expectancy grew by eight years between 1990 and 2013. While India has
sharply reduced its infant morality between 2000 and 2013, it still contributes for the most
infant deaths globally. Non-communicable diseases are the top killers, followed by
communicable diseases and injuries.
In September, countries will decide on new goals for 2030. “In addition to finishing the
MDG agenda, the post-2015 agenda needs to tackle emerging challenges, including the growing
impact of non-communicable diseases, like diabetes and heart disease, and the changing social
and environmental determinats that affect health.”

Punjab becomes first state to issue soil – health cards (SHC) to farmers
It contains all basic and cropwise recommendation of fertilizers
or nutrients required for farms of different soil types.
Launched in February 2015 in Suratgarh, Rajasthan.

21. India developing atomic clocks for use on satellites
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is developing rubidium based, high-
precision atomic clocks for use in its next series of navigation satellites. These satellites, meant
for civil and military uses need to show the exact position and time of persons and objects on
earth. So, they should keep extremely accurate time as they send signals.
22. Preconception Sex Selection and Pre-Natal Sex Determination is a CRIMINAL
OFFENCE
PC&PNDT Act 2004: Salient Features
Prohibits sex selection before and after conception
Prohibits misuse of pre-conception and pre-natal diagnostic techniques for
determination of sex of the foetus.
Prohibits advertisements of such techniques for detection or determination of sex of
the foetus, even through the internet.
For any advertisement regarding sex selection: Upto 3 years of imprisonment and
up to Rs.10,000 fine.

K.Sivan will take over as Director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) of the
Indian Space Research organisation (ISRO) in Thiruvananthapuram. He succeeds

Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the appointment of Pradeep Kumar Sinha,

The Road Safety Committee formed by the Supreme Court to check lax enforcement of

2. Gold Monetisation scheme
The Central government is considering allowing banks to utilise gold mobilised under the
monetisation scheme for meeting mandatory liquidity requirements set by the Reserve
Bank of India (RBI).
What is gold monetisation scheme?
It is a scheme that facilitates the depositors of fold to earn interest on their metal
accounts. Once the gold is deposited in metal account, it will start earning interest on the
same.
What is the tenure?
The tenure of gold deposits is likely to be for a minimum of one year. The minimum
quantity of deposits is pegged at 30 gram to encourage even small deposits. The gold can
be in any form, bullion or jewellery.
How the redemption takes place?
Customer will have the choice to take cash or gold on redemption, but the preference has to
be stated at the time of deposit.
NPCI was set up in 2009 as the central infrastructure for
various retail payment systems in India
