The Putnam County Archives/Veterans’ Hall is selling engraved bricks to help fund a new building.  Pictured with one of the bricksis the family of veteran Wayne L. Smith, seated, left, Jeanette Smith, his wife; and Norma Smith, mother.   In back, from left, areShannon Alford, daughter; Bronson and Presley Randolph, grandchildren; and Jason Smith, son.  Wayne served in the Navy duringthe Vietnam War on the USS Bon Homme Richard and the USS Enterprise.  He was awarded medals for Good Conduct, NationalDefense, Armed Forces Expedition, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Vietnam Service and Vietnam Campaign.

The late U. S. Army Private Quartermaster Corpsman Alva Albert Allen and the late Private First Class Hobert H. Allen, representedby daughter and sister  June Vickers, are  the Herald­Citizen Veterans of  the Week.  Alva Albert Allen served during WWI with theQuartermaster Corps.   He died Sept. 15, 1954,  and  is buried  in Cookeville City Cemetery.    Hobert H. Allen served  in  the  infantryduring  WWII  in  the  European  theatre and  engaged  in  Anzio Beachhead.    He  trained at  Camp  Wheeler  in  GA and  Fort  George  G.Meade in MD. He was killed in action in Corano, Italy, Feb. 18, 1944, and is buried in Nashville National Cemetery, Nashville, TN.Photo by Megan Trotter.

US ARMY 1ST LT. JOHN DOUGLAS WALL, US ARMY COL. JAMES THOMAS WALLUS MARINE CORPS PFC WILKES HAMMOCK WALL JR.

The Wall brothers, U. S. Army 1st Lt. John Douglas Wall, seated left, and U. S. Army Col. James Thomas Wall, seated right, alsorepresenting their late brother U. S. Marine Corps PFC Wilkes Hammock Wall  Jr.,  are  the Herald­Citizen Veterans of  the Week.Also  pictured  are  Lula  Wall  Bartholomew  and  Anita  Wall  Moore,  sisters.    John  Douglas  Wall  served  during  the  Korean  War,working as courts and boards officer stationed at Fort Gordon, GA.  James Thomas Wall was assigned as military attaché to LatinAmerica and was an adjunct professor at U. S. Military Academy at West Point.  Wilkes Hammock Wall Jr. served during WWII inthe Pacific Theater of Operation, stationed in Hawaii.  He died in March of 1990 and is buried in Algood Cemetery.

U. S. ARMY COL. ROY HUGH SULLIVAN

The late U. S. Army PFC Burl Earl Tinch, represented by sister Leona Tinch Wheeler and nephew Jim Wheeler, is theHerald­Citizen  Veteran  of  the  Week.    Tinch  served  during  World  War  II  from  1943­1945,  serving  with  the  124th

UNION PRIVATE LEROY A. VAUGHN

The late Union Private Leroy A. Vaughn, who served with Company C, First Tennessee Mounted infantry during the Civil War,represented  by,  seated,  from  left,  great­granddaughters  Marlene  Allison  and  Maybell  Hicks,  and,  standing,  great­great­granddaughter Marsha Hicks,  is the Herald­Citizen Veteran of the Week.   Vaughn was born in 1834 in Buffalo Valley, PutnamCo., TN and died in 1925.  He is buried in Myrtle Pippin Cemetery.

ARMY T4 JOHN TUBB PULLUM

The  late  Army  T4  John  Tubb  Pullum.  Represented  by  his  children,  from  left,  Rosemary  Burger  (of  Chattsworth,  GA),Lonnie Pullum and Linda Goodwin, is the Herald­Citizen Veteran of the Week.  John served during World War II duringthe invasion of Normandy, ferrying troops and was awarded the Bronze Star for his heroic acts on Moselle River, Germany.He died in 1975 and is buried in Crest Lawn Cemetery.

U. S. ARMY TEC 5 J. C. MAYNARD

The late U. s. Army Tec 5 J. C. Maynard, represented by daughters Melinda Brewington, left, and Cherl Crouch,is the Herald­Citizen Veteran of the Week.  Maynard served in Co., E, 804th Engineers, Gilbert Islands, Spain,Marianas, Baker Island and Christmas Island.  He survived the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the jungles of theSouth  Pacific.    He  died  27  March  2010,  Cookeville,  TN,  the  last  survivor  of  Pearl  Harbor  to  die  in  PutnamCounty,  and  is  buried  in  Tightfit  Cemetery,  Putnam  Co.,  TN.    He  was  the  son  of  Larkin  "Lark"  MaynardSr.(1890­1972) & Amanda "Mandy" Catherine Jernigan (1896­1977).
