ABC News (AP): Man Exaggerated Impairment, Scammed Government of $1.5 Million. A Navy veteran scammed federal agencies out of more than $1.5 million by exaggerating his multiple sclerosis, claiming he needed a wheelchair to get around when he was actually playing golf, baseball and taking part in a grueling foot race, prosecutors said. A jury in South Carolina found Dennis Paulsen guilty Monday in one of the largest fraudulent disability compensation claims for a single person in the history of the Department of Veterans Affairs, U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles said.

Smith, a four-star Air Force general who flew combat missions in Korea, wrote a book about the Cuban Missile Crisis and retired as deputy commander of U.S. forces in Europe, died Jan. 19 at his home in Falls Church, Va. He was 90.

Military Times: New Veterans ID cards won’t be available until 2017. Congress passed legislation for a new veterans ID card last summer, but it will likely be another year before any are issued. The Department of Veterans Affairs has begun drafting regulations for production and issuing of the ID cards, designed to give veterans easy proof of their military service for non-federal activities.

The Post and Courier: Triple amputee talks about the ;bright side’ with Charleston Veterans. Bryan Anderson spent about 12 minutes lying on a hot Baghdad sidewalk before a military helicopter landed to rescue him. It was Oct. 23, 2005, more than two years after the United States invaded Iraq. During his first tour of duty in Iraq in 2003, Anderson escaped without a scratch. His second tour ended differently — on that hot Baghdad sidewalk — when an improvised explosive device hit the vehicle Anderson had been driving.

Military.com: Former VA Executives Appeal to Have Demotions Overturned Again. Two former senior executives with the Veterans Affairs Department who were demoted after

allegedly abusing their positions to get plum job assignments have appealed the decision -- again. Diana Rubens and Kimberly Graves were senior executives and regional directors with the VA accused of using their titles to force subordinates out of jobs they wanted for themselves, according to a department's inspector general report from September.

The Philadelphia Inquirer: Embattled VA director gets her day in court. For years, Diana Rubens was an ostensibly successful government employee who climbed the executive ladder at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. After being tapped in 2014 to clean up the mess at its Philadelphia benefits office, she won praise. But in the past year, Rubens became something else: a poster child, deserved or not, for the flawed management at the VA.

FierceGovernmentIT: McDonald: VA working toward single ‘data backbone’. This year, the Veterans Affairs Department plans to develop a holistic veteran data management strategy, which will help ensure that veterans can go to any VA health facility and more easily receive care, said VA Secretary Bob McDonald in recent testimony. "By the end of the year, a veteran can go anywhere they want and we will serve them," said McDonald during a Jan. 21 hearing before the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee.

Military Times: No difference in death rates for Veterans of secret Navy chem-bio tests. Secret biological and chemical warfare tests conducted on U.S. Navy ships in the 1960s do not appear to have affected the health of participating sailors and Marines, according to a report released earlier this month. The Institute of Medicine study found that troops who took part in Project Shipboard Hazard and Defense, or SHAD, which was part of a larger chem-bio program known as Project 112…

KVOR-TV (CBS-13, Video): Auburn Mayor Defends Helping VA Patient Smoke Marijuana to Help With Chemotherapy. The mayor of Auburn says he helped a patient smoke marijuana inside a Northern California Veterans Affairs hospital. Dr. William Kirby is a practicing urologist, and he revealed during a discussion on medical marijuana at the City Council meeting he sent someone to find marijuana on the streets for a patient. The mayor is defending his decision, saying he made it not as a politician, but as a doctor.

Rapid City Journal: VA consulting parties meet. A meeting between “consulting parties” and the U.S. Veterans Administration, Black Hills Health Care Services (VA BHHCS) was held… According to the meeting’s agenda, the consulting parties meeting was a “…process of seeking, discussing and considering the views of other participants, and, where feasible, seeking agreement with them…” with the primary goal of fostering “a discussion process to evaluate

alternatives, and ways within those alternatives to avoid, minimize or mitigate adverse effects on historic properties.”

FOX News: Banished US Veterans lean on each other south of border. They served the United States on battlefields from Korea to Iraq, but now they live in the shadow of the nation they once served, deported to Mexico for offenses as minor as getting caught with marijuana. While many U.S. veterans find adjusting to civilian life difficult, writing a bad check, possessing marijuana or getting into a bar fight are enough to get some veterans banished from the nation they fought to protect.

North County Public Radio (Audio): For older Veterans struggling in college, the key to graduation is relationships. Going back to school is challenging for veterans. The majority who enroll in two- or four-year colleges across the nation don’t complete their degree. Jefferson Community College in Watertown and SUNY Canton will be awarded over a million dollars this year to help more veterans graduate. School administrators say individual attention is key. Picture this: You're a student, dressed in say, jeans and a T-shirt.

Los Angeles Times: Accounting for L.A.’s homeless. On Tuesday evening, some 7,000 volunteers will embark upon a three-night effort to count the number of homeless people who live on streets, in tents and vehicles, or bed down in temporary shelters in Los Angeles County. The counters, under the supervision of officials from the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, plan to fan out across more than 95% of the census tracts in the county — the most territory the L.A. count has ever covered.

The Philadelphia Inquirer: VA’s decision to pull plug on homeless-housing group is a mistake. On the day that the city announced that it had "functionally ended" homelessness among veterans, word came that the Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Medical Center was ending its contract with Pathways to Housing PA to house chronically homeless vets. Seems that the VA facility - the one blasted in a 2015 Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General's investigation over mismanagement and distrust - thinks it can help the vets just as well, and more cheaply, in-house.

San Bernardino County 1st District Supervisor Robert Lovingood said Monday he asked Veteran Affairs Secretary Robert McDonald to "see how we can increase" federal spending on programs geared toward assisting homeless veterans. McDonald met with Lovingood and the four other Supervisors on Monday during a special session in San Bernardino. Lovingood said he met with the VA chief early and had "some great conversations," and then stayed for about 15 minutes…

Washington Examiner: VA’s email spying may violate whistleblower policy. Efforts by the Department of Veterans Affairs to track and divert whistleblower emails may have violated a policy put forward by the Office of Special Counsel, which told agencies that whistleblowers must be allowed to reveal waste, fraud and abuse in the government without fear of retaliation. Last week, whistleblowers showed the Washington Examiner evidence that the VA was diverting their emails to Washington, D.C.

The Daily Tergum: Rutgers-Camden to host career panel for Veterans. Veterans face a number of issues, both during their service and upon their return. But fellow veterans can help them overcome these issues. Military Times (AP): 2 Men Sentenced for Defrauding Memphis VA of $1.1 Million. Federal prosecutors say two men have been sentenced to prison for defrauding the Memphis VA Medical Center of more than $1 million. The U.S. attorney's office said Monday that

Andre Reddix and Ronnie White pleaded guilty to fraud conspiracy in September. White received two years and six months in prison on Dec. 11. Reddix received the same sentence Thursday. The men were each ordered to pay back more than $1.1 million.
