OVERVIEWThis booklet contains information on the range of courses offered by South Metropolitan TAFE as Vocational Education and Training in Schools (VETiS) courses.

Information such as delivery locations, costs and uniform requirements are included to assist schools, teachers, parents and students in making the best choices for each individual.

With 14 campuses across the Perth metropolitan area, South Metropolitan TAFE is the largest provider of education and training in Western Australia.

ABOUT SOUTH METROPOLITAN TAFE VET IN SCHOOLS COURSESPATHWAYS TO EMPLOYMENTSouth Metropolitan TAFE offers industry approved courses that provide relevant workplace skills at specialised industry training centres.

South Metropolitan TAFE students that complete a qualification will be on a pathway to their chosen career. Many students gain employment or go onto further training such as our certificates, diplomas, advanced diplomas, associate degrees or university.

PATHWAYS TO UNIVERSITYSouth Metropolitan TAFE courses can provide pathways to university. On completion of a Certificate IV or Diploma, graduates can use their qualification to apply for a wide range of courses at university.

South Metropolitan TAFE has advanced standing agreements with Murdoch Univeristy, Curtin University, Edith Cowan University, the University of Notre Dame and the University of Western Australia in a range of bachelor degree courses.

Students graduating from South Metropolitan TAFE’s diploma and advanced diploma courses may gain up to one year credit in bachelor degrees of 3 to 4 years. For more information about South Metropolitan TAFE’s university pathways please call 1800 001 001 or go to southmetrotafe.wa.edu.au

FEES AND CHARGESSecondary school students undertaking VETiS courses as part of their secondary education including pre-apprenticeships in schools courses are exempt from tuition, resource and enrolment fees. However depending on the chosen course students may be required to purchase a uniform, protective equipment, text books or trade equipment/tools.

ATTENDANCEStudents are responsible for ensuring that they attend all scheduled classes. Attendance will be recorded and any absences are reported to the school. The VET Coordinator at your school will be contacted to discuss the appropriateness of a student continuing if there are repeated absences. Students are required to inform their lecturer in advance if they will be absent from any scheduled classes. Poor attendance may mean withdrawal from the course.

DRESS CODEStudents are not required to wear their school uniform to their course but they are expected to dress appropriately.

Where special or protective clothing and/or footwear is required, it must be worn without exception. Students who forget to bring their protective clothing will be excluded from the campus workshops/classes and the school informed.

VETIS APPLICATIONS FOR 2018 OPEN JULY AND CLOSE FRIDAY 1 SEPTEMBER 2017 To complete the application students will require their:

VETiS courses are extremely competitive and it is recommended that as much evidence as possible is provided to support the application. These documents must be uploaded when applying through our online application system.

SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS (STEM) AND DEFENCE PATHWAYSSouth Metropolitan TAFE is the only TAFE in WA with dedicated defence pathway courses. These are in place to provide sustainable links between schools, TAFE, higher education and the defence sector so that current and future defence needs are met and a strategy of attract, train, retain and re-train is adopted to build capability in the sector.

Students who are still at school can start their defence career pathway across a range of study areas and a variety of training options are available.

SHIPBUILDINGA shipbuilding qualification gives you the skills to design, construct and maintain a variety of vessels from warships to superyachts to kayaks. You will gain practical experience in new composite technology, building and repairing boats in a range of materials including metal, wood and fibreglass. Your study will also give you the understanding of industry regulations and boating operations in addition to enabling you to work with other specialist professionals in the maritime industry.

Certificate II in Aeroskills (Aeroskills Mechanical Pre-Apprenticeship)This one year qualification for Year 11 or 12 students provides the initial skills and knowledge required for a highly sought after career in aircraft maintenance, as well as a pathway into an apprenticeship.

Students will learn about the fundamentals of aircraft engines, airframes, electrical systems, instrumentation, gas turbines, piston engines, hydraulics, mechanical control systems, safe work practices, test equipment and more.

Students will gain invaluable practical experience in an operational aircraft hangar workshop, enabling them to learn the necessary hand skills and standards that are required in the industry.

Upon successful completion students will receive course credit into South Metropolitan TAFE’s Certificate IV in Aeroskills (if selected by an employer as an aircraft maintenance engineer apprentice).

Certificate III in Aviation (Cabin Crew)This course is designed for Year 12 students who are seeking an exciting career in the aviation industry as Cabin Crew (Flight Attendants).

The majority of the practical training will be conducted on South Metropolitan TAFE’s very own Boeing 737. Its full-length cabin includes business and economy class seating, operational galleys, cabin service equipment and PA system.

Students will learn how to evacuate down a slide, about (simulated) cabin fires with smoke, fire fighting, ditching and life raft training. The practical skills and knowledge gained in this qualification will be used to facilitate the safety and comfort of passengers and other crew members.

Certificate II in Building and Construction (Pathway-Trades)This qualification is designed to provide the learner with foundation skills therefore enhancing apprenticeship prospects in the building and construction industry which is experiencing a current skills shortage.

Students who attend Rockingham or Peel Campus will complete common core competencies shared between many construction trades, then in the second year of study they can select a trade pathway of either:

• Bricklayingandblocklaying,or• Carpentryandjoinery.

Students learn skills in handling construction materials, basic hand skills, reading building plans, measuring and calculations. This qualification has an emphasis on the practical aspects of building and construction and will include a number of basic construction projects constructed on campus as part of the training course which complements their classroom studies.

Those students who attend the course delivered at Armadale Senior High School Trade Training Centre attend two days per week can choose between the brick/blocklaying or carpentry and joinery pathway. The qualification will be completed in one year.

This course is delivered by South Metropolitan TAFE lecturers, in partnership with Armadale Senior High School, at its state of the art Trade Training Centre.

Certificate II in Engineering (Mechanical Fitter and Machinist Pre-Apprenticeship)Fitters are often employed in engineering workshops. There are also a large number of skilled workers in the mining industry and on offshore oil rigs, repairing and servicing heavy mining equipment. Fitters also work with pumps, hydraulics and pneumatics.

Machinists work from detailed drawings to create parts (made from metal and other materials) using lathes, milling machines and various power tools, to make and service machinery, pumps and other equipment.

Certificate II in LogisticsThis course will provide students with an introduction to the transport and logistics industry. Students will be introduced to a number of tasks, routines and procedures commonly used by transport and logistics professionals to provide goods and services to the community.

Starting with the basics of safety in the workplace, manual handling and the identification of hazardous and dangerous goods, which will prepare students for introduction into the work place.

The course moves in to logistics process receiving goods, despatching goods and inventory management with an introduction to stocktaking.

Certificate II in Retail Baking Assistance (Pre-Apprenticeship)Bakers prepare and bake all types of breads, rolls, cakes, pastries and baked goods. They usually work for bakeries that sell food for direct consumption by the public, or they may work for large organisations such as airlines, hotels or the military.

Bakers use raw ingredients, combine them either using machines or by hand and then bake them in ovens. They may also glaze, decorate, slice and wrap these products for individual consumption.

Certificate III in Screen and MediaThis qualification will provide students with the practical skills and knowledge to undertake a range of operations in the exciting and creative digital media industry.

The two main areas of specialisation in this course are animation and digital effects and digital content and imaging. This is a very practical course with all classes being conducted in well-equipped computer laboratories using iMacs, Windows based PCs, cameras and other peripherals. Software available includes Autodesk, Adobe, Unity and more.

Students learn to develop and extend their creative thinking skills, create 2D and 3D animations, produce drawings, prepare and produce photo images, create and maintain websites and author interactive media. These studies will greatly enhance students’ media skills, set them on a firm footing towards a media career, and also prepare them for employment.

Online applications are not required for education support courses. School VET coordinators are required to complete the application form on page 57 and email this to [email protected] by the application closing date.

South Metropolitan TAFE continues its commitment to providing options for all school-aged students including those attending education support centres or undertaking education support courses. We provide learning environments that welcome students of all abilities and promotes inclusiveness. Students with disabilities and a diverse range of learning needs can attend South Metropolitan TAFE alongside their peers.

The courses outlined over the following pages have been selected as suitable for education support students. When considering South Metropolitan TAFE courses, it is important to consider all the requirements before applying.

Schools are expected to send education assistants with students who require in-classroom support at school. If you are unsure about the suitability of a course please discuss with your school VET coordinator.

HOW TO APPLYStep 1 With your VET coordinator, read the course requirements carefully to determine a course that you are interested in undertaking.

Step 2 Once you have selected a course, you and your parent/guardian are to complete the application form.

Step 3: Return the application and any supporting documentation to your VET coordinator by the date required (if you aren’t sure – ask your VET coordinator). The VET coordinator will complete your application and submit the documentation to South Metropolitan TAFE.

Step 4: Successful students will be advised by the school before the end of 2017. Early in 2018, parents and students will be provided with information about your selected course, public transport options, where to meet on the first day and any other important information.

South Metropolitan TAFE has a limited number of fee-for-service courses on offer in 2018.

These courses have been designed to provide more variety to students. The courses in this section are either not on our funded list of courses or would be suitable for students that have already completed a one year qualification, and would like to continue studying with South Metropolitan TAFE for another year.

Each course has a fee attached and this fee would need to be paid by the student at the commencement of study.

Certificate III in Information, Digital Media and Technology (Network Administration)This qualification will make students an attractive applicant for information technology roles such as client support officer, IT technician, or ICT operations support.

Students will gain the knowledge and skills to support a wide range of IT activities, including but not limited to: hardware installation and maintenance, PC operating system; networking operating system installation and management, advanced use of applications, workplace health and safety; simple website creation; social media use; develop digital images for use on the internet.

Any Certificate IV in Information Technology can be applied for after completing this course. There are no restrictions.

Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and CareThis qualification will prepare students to be job ready for the role of educator in the early childhood education and care sector. They may also work as an education assistant in a kindergarten.

Students will gain the knowledge and skills to work effectively as an educator, supporting the development and wellbeing of children aged 0 - 5 years, understanding children’s learning, providing learning support, working with children from a range of diverse backgrounds, identifying and responding to children at risk, and workplace health and safety.

School-based traineeships and apprenticeships are paid employment-based training courses for full-time school students, 15 years of age and over. Under these arrangements the student is both a full-time student and a part-time employee with the same employment and training privileges and responsibilities as other apprentices/trainees.

To be a school-based apprentice/trainee a student must fulfill certain requirements, including:

• Enter into a training contract with an employer to complete an apprenticeship/traineeship• Have their school’s agreement to undertake the school-based apprenticeship/traineeship• Have the completed units of competency of their apprenticeship/traineeship included on their
