Pastor’s Perspective A church member sent me an article last week entitled, “Number One Reason

Americans Go To Church.” The article came out of a recent survey of Protestant Christians that originally was focused on what causes Americans to switch churches. It turns out most American Christians don’t do so very often. A full 62% of respon-dents had attended their church for at least ten years. Of those, 27% had attended the same church for 25 years or more. Another 17% of Protestants surveyed had stayed with the same congregation between five and nine years. When you consider that some individuals change churches because they move out of the area for work or marriage, most Protestant Christians tend to stay put when it comes to churches.

But as the survey dug into what might cause individuals to consider switching churches, several key reasons why people go to church in the first place emerged. The number one reason is to hear sermons that teach about the Bible and how to apply God’s Word to their lives. That reason was followed by community outreach programs (61%) and social activities that can provide a sense of community (49%). Matt Woodley wrote recently in Preaching Today’s annual State of Preaching out-look that “in a distracted, outraged, shallow culture, people begin to hunger for something rare: that which is focused, balanced and deep. In depth preaching is our best chance to change lives.” This is good news for pastors who might feel the pressure to compete with the fast-paced sensory overload of the internet age. What Christians want or need isn’t flashy entertainment in the pulpit. The data shows that what Christians across the country need is deep, Biblical truth that speaks to life’s deepest questions. They are looking for wisdom and guidance in a troubled world.

I found it particularly interesting that 40% of millennial Christians fact-check sermons on Google to find errors. While some might be alarmed by that statistic, I am not. I believe it speaks to their deep desire for truth in a culture that has been trying to convince them that truth is relative. An honest search for truth will lead to the person of Jesus Christ who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. I found the survey results encouraging and plan to keep preaching the Word to the best of my ability.

See you Sunday! ~ John
