Technical descripTionVESO Vikan is a state-of-the-art non-recirculation trialunit lab with advanced registration and surveillancesystems. e research facility consists of a wet lab with separate isolates and holding tanks from 8 to 7500 liters. e tank design can be customized toaccommodate research needs, including individual lightregimes, salinity and temperature. Tank numbers in

use varies from 200 to 1000, depending on the natureof the trials. e research facility has two fresh watersources and sea water is drawn from 60 meters depthoutside the facility. Incoming water is filtered and UV-treated prior to admittance to the test area. esalinity of the ord water is ~33 ‰. Effluent water isdisinfected with chlorine and ozone.

is an aquatic research facility for contract challenge trials forthe pharmaceutical-, feed- and breeding industries, research institutionsand government bodies. VESO Vikan offers standardized challengemodels for Atlantic salmon, rainbow trout, seabass and Atlantic cod. Pathogens include viruses, bacteria and parasites. VESO Vikan offerslong-term vaccine studies (duration of protection) and field trialsconducted under commercial farming conditions. We also focus on safetyaspects of veterinary medical products.

As a contract research facility, VESO Vikan represents an independentpartner, ensuring full confidentiality and customer dedication. VESO Vikan focuses on trial quality systems and strives to maintain the highest ethical profile in all our activities. Our aim is to make the VESO trademark synonymous with uncompromising quality and reliability in fish health research.

challenge FaciliTychallenge experiments are designed to evaluate theefficacy of vaccines, effects of feeding or genetic resistance profiles against infectious agents. VESOVikan’s R&D focus is to develop and maintain reliableand clinically relevant challenge models for pathogensaffecting global aquaculture, especially Salmonids. VESOVikan’s highly qualified and experienced staff works in

close collaboration with research institutions and theaquaculture industry. We subcontract expertise andservices on behalf of our customers when necessary to ensure full width documentation of test products and compliance with formal test requirements. We are happyto develop new models and standards in collaborationwith our clients.

haTcherySalmon for experimental trials in the laboratory and field are produced at VESO Vikan’s hatchery. Production of ourown salmon ensures quality in every stepfrom egg to seaworthy smolts.

e hatchery produces atlantic salmon(15–30 grams) all year round, includingsalmon genetically bred for high or lowresistance against disease. Our fish arescreened and certified pathogen free before being used in trials.

Field TrialsVESO Vikan holds two salmon farminglicenses for R&D. e licenses enable trial conduct under commercial farmingconditions throughout the salmon lifecycle from hatching to harvest. Fish thatare included in field trials are produced at VESO Vikan hatchery. e key application for this composite trial system is to enable evaluation of efficacyand side effects of vaccines in a real-lifeenvironment and to facilitate clinicalvalidation of our laboratory challengemodels. VESO Vikan has considerableexperience in administering field trials and provides administrativeand scientific services for full-scale testing of vaccines andpharmaceuticals. Trials are routinely conductedaccording to gcP(good clinicalPractice).
