VERTIGO History

Previous VERTIGO Project Objectives:

• Deliver a fully-functional VTOL tilt-rotor aircraft

• Incorporate a complete wireless avionics system including camera and GPS

• Working prototype of plane

Page 3: VERTIGO 2 Validation Review Presentation April 6, 2005.

History Cont.

Previous VERTIGO Accomplishments:

• Airframe built, but not fully functional

• Control system coded, but not integrated with aircraft

Page 4: VERTIGO 2 Validation Review Presentation April 6, 2005.

History Cont.

VERTIGO² Initial Objectives:

• Finish what VERTIGO started

• Deliver a fully-functional VTOL aircraft

• Make necessary modifications to existing airframe and avionics suite

Page 5: VERTIGO 2 Validation Review Presentation April 6, 2005.

History Cont.

VERTIGO² Inheritance:

• No parts inventory

• Many missing parts, not recoverable

• Run down airframe

• No clear analysis of problems

• No clear plan on how to tackle problems

Page 6: VERTIGO 2 Validation Review Presentation April 6, 2005.

• Continue development of control system but solely for vertical flight mode (hover)

• Repair/modify airframe to flightworthiness

• Integrate controls and airframe so that improvements can be made later and full functionality eventually realized

Objectives

Primary Objectives

Page 7: VERTIGO 2 Validation Review Presentation April 6, 2005.

Onboard Systems

Hardware:

• Serial Connection (tethered)

• PIC

• Servos

• Motors

• System Clock

Page 8: VERTIGO 2 Validation Review Presentation April 6, 2005.

Base Communication

• Joystick -> Laptop -> PIC

• Flight Control Software (FCS)– Event Based not Continuous Polling– 2 Digit HEX Signal Instead of 3 Digits

Page 9: VERTIGO 2 Validation Review Presentation April 6, 2005.

PIC Communication

• 16-bit Micro-controller– Converts from analog to digital– Controls 6 servos and 2 motors– Capable of serial communication

• PIC Basic Pro– Infinite loop of:

» Reading the serial port» Updating the servos one at a time

• Controls– Left to right motion control– Back to front motion control– Yaw motion control– Propeller speed

What we have accomplished thus far?

• Working Base Station– Joystick– Laptop

• Working On-board System– PIC Board– Running Software

Current Status (Prateek)

Page 11: VERTIGO 2 Validation Review Presentation April 6, 2005.

Obstacles

• Unavailability of certain parts

• Circuitry too complex a deliverable

• Original motor-controllers from previous VERTIGO team missing

• Project completion time frame too short– Time spent in junior design could have been utilized for

working on project

Page 12: VERTIGO 2 Validation Review Presentation April 6, 2005.

Solutions to Obstacles

• Use of alternative parts– Standard DC motors and controller

• Use of DC motor instead of 3-phase motor

• Due to short time frame– Guidance from some members of the previous

year’s VERTIGO team for ideas and development planning

– Features were reduced

Pending Items

What still has to be done for the tradeshow?• Communication between base station and on-

board system (joystick controls with PIC)• Installation of DC motors on the VERTIGO craft• Aircraft Repair• System Integration

– DC motors connected mechanically but not electrically

• Overall plane integration

Tradeshow

Display will consist of:• Three tables

– Two tables for:• Displaying software on the laptop• Project informational brochures• 2 display boards

– Computer Engineering display board– Aerospace Engineering display board

– Circular table• VERTIGO plane
