The Ramada Storax Group

The Ramada Storax factory was founded in northern Portugal in 1935 by engineer Francisco Ramada. The company became a licenced manufacturer for Dexion Ltd – renowned UK founder of the storage and materials handling industry - in 1958. Their relationship endured for nearly 40 years.

Independent since the late 1990’s, Ramada Storax acquired a UK-based company called Barpro in 2001. Having developed an innovative rail-mounted storage system in 1968, Barpro was the pioneer of the modern mobile racking industry and had continued to hone their invention, becoming world leaders over the ensuing 30 years.

When the Ramada Storax Group acquired Barpro in 2001, the company inherited the leading edge technology and know-how that became the springboard to further innovative research and development. Today Ramada Storax export their systems world-wide and are also involved in the creation of pan-European EN design standards.

In 2003 Ramada Storax backed the creation of a new trading division of Storax UK: Storax Racking Supplies. As a stock-holding source of supply-only racking and shelving for trade dealers in the industry, the business is now a well-established and respected supplier in the storage equipment marketplace.

Storax UK are Associate members of SEMA and full members of the Sema Distributor Group.

The Ramada Storax Group plays an active part in the creation of industry standards with the European Federation of Materials Handling (FEM).

Storax SP pallet racking to EN15512 European design standard provides efficient, dependable pallet storage which can be designed around virtually any make and model of fork lift truck.

The SP system comes in an extensive range of upright duties, 2 upright widths – 80mm and 115mm – and a wide selection of pallet beam sections, meaning that every scheme can be planned precisely for optimal performance, while also avoiding unnecessary costs of an over-specified installation.

Produced in a durable, epoxy resin powder-coat paint finish with dark grey frames and bright red beams as standard, Storax SP racking can also be supplied in a hot-dip galvanised finish if the application demands it. Bespoke colours can be supplied for large installations.

SP racking is supplied with locking pins that give visual assurance that the beams are securely located in the uprights. Stock identification labels can be added to beam picking faces if needed, for example in computerised warehouse management systems that utilise barcode labelling

SP80 and SP115 racking systems are both available with a range of accessories, to optimise performance, to ensure safe systems of working and/or to protect stock against damage, fire or theft. SEMA – the Storage Equipment Manufacturer’s Association – was founded in the early days of the storage equipment industry to develop and establish standards for racking systems installed within the UK. It remains the authoritative British Trade Association today, promoting the safe design, installation and use of industrial storage equipment.

Storax SP80 (SEMA) is fully-compliant with all the principles and rules laid down by the SEMA organisation. It is available in a wide range of frame duties and beam sections, with epoxy resin powder-coated dark grey uprights and bright orange beams supplied as standard.

The iconic high-visibility beam safety lock gives instant assurance that the beam is correctly located and secured in place in the upright; a wide selection of additional accessories that enhance usability and/or safety are also available.

SP80 (SEMA) provides efficient adjustable pallet storage in its own right, but it also boasts a unique history and origin: its fundamental design is identical to that of the ever-popular, original Speedlock Mk3® racking system. This exclusive attribute is the outcome of a licencee contract that was drawn up in the late 1950’s between the manufacturer of Speedlock Mk3® and the Ramada Storax factory and that lasted until the end of the 1990’s.

Since then Ramada Storax have modernised and upgraded the tooling several times and have introduced subtle improvements to the product. Nonetheless, SP80 (SEMA) remains 100% compatible with Speedlock Mk3® and can be used with absolute confidence to carry out repairs to extend the useful life of existing sites.With consistent fit and performance assured, SP80 (SEMA) parts combined with Speedlock® materials can create fresh, original installations – at a fraction of the cost of discarding the old product in its entirety and starting from scratch with another racking system.

Since 2003 Ramada Storax have manufactured and supplied thousands of tonnes of SP80 (SEMA) racking to hundreds of existing Speedlock Mk3® sites in the UK, the Republic of Ireland and countries in northern Europe through our established network of trade dealers.

STORAX SP80 PALLET RACKING – SEMA UK DESIGN STANDARD

Storax SP Drive-in racking conforms to FEM 10.2.07 European design standard and provides dense blocks of pallet storage. It generally suits applications where the stock profile requires only minimal selectivity. Typically these include goods that are not date-sensitive or that arrive and go out in bulk. It is also an appropriate option for the storage of goods that aren’t suitable for block-stacking on top of each other on the floor, due to potential for crush damage to occur.

Drive-in racks are loaded and unloaded from the same face: fork trucks are driven into and reverse out of the individual lanes to deposit or retrieve palletised loads. The requirement to have just a single operating aisle makes Drive-in racking suitable for installing against a wall to provide ‘first-in, last-out’ (FILO), high-density storage in a compact space.

However, Drive-in racking can also be built with an aisle at either end of the block. This rack configuration is often described as ‘Drive-through’ because it is theoretically possible to drive in one end of a lane and exit the lane at the other end. In practice, this is only possible when lanes are empty at the lower levels and don’t contain the sway bracing that is fitted at intervals to maintain the rigidity of the racking structure.

If stock levels and profiles fluctuate regularly or seasonally, a Drive-through arrangement provides greater flexibility than Drive-in. Having an aisle at each end of a racking block gives the option to store two different product lines in every lane, each accessed from a dedicated end. Although smaller quantities of each product can be stored in this arrangement, a greater diversity of products can be accommodated overall.

Alternatively, identical product can be held throughout each lane, but loaded from one end and unloaded from the other, thereby giving ‘first-in, first-out’ (FIFO) storage

Despite the fact that incorporating additional aisles into a Drive-in scheme to give Drive-through functionality reduces the overall storage density, this is often compensated for by the enhanced versatility it delivers. The precise characteristics of the operation will normally determine the optimal layout.

Although Drive-in racking is particularly beneficial when used in cold stores, the high-density of storage that can be achieved means that it also offers potential benefits when used in ambient applications. By minimising the amount of physical warehouse space, Storax SP Drive-in makes it possible to save on the cost of lighting, heating, rent and rates.

Storage schemes that feature the movement of product within the confines of a racking framework are generally referred to as ‘dynamic’ or ‘live’ – as opposed to ‘static’ – solutions.

Gravity-fed dynamic systems offer high-density storage with additional scope for productivity improvement by reduced truck movements.

Unlike Drive-in racking, all loading and unloading of dynamic systems is carried out at the rack faces; the operatives don’t enter the racking lanes. This significantly reduces the time taken to marshal pallets, and speeds up picking rates.

The most commonly-used methods of creating dynamic pallet storage are by integrating racking frameworks with either carts/trollies (right) or beds of metal rollers (far right).

Cart-based Push-Back racking is so called because each pallet is literally pushed back into the storage lane on a nesting wheeled cart when the fork truck operator loads the rack. Reliance on the truck operator to control the pallet movements makes Cart Push-Back suitable for relatively short lanes; each manufacturer will specify maximum numbers and weights of pallets to be stored in each lane.

Roller-based Push-Back systems usually incorporate braked rollers that regulate the speed at which pallets travel to the pick face. For this reason they can generally accommodate heavier pallets and longer lanes than cart-based systems.

In contrast to Push Back racks, which deliver ‘last-in first-out’ (LIFO) storage, roller-based systems can be designed with an operating aisle at each end of the racking block.

Pallets travel under the force of gravity within each lane from the on-load to the off-load face, which provides guaranteed first-in, first-out (FIFO) stock rotation.

DYNAMIC RACKING SYSTEMS

Storax SP80 and SP115 pallet racking ranges, and Storax SP55 Longspan shelving can all be easily adapted to provide the support framework for dynamic solutions offered by the major 3rd party manufacturers of trollies and roller beds.

Boasting a pedigree that stretches back to 1966, Storax Powerack is a leading industrial mobile racking system. Powerack carries the European CE mark, which confirms that it complies with all relevant EU legislation; it is also fully compliant with UK SEMA design standards.

Mobile racking offers high-density, adaptable storage - typically delivering 95% occupancy rates - and 100% direct access to every storage location at all times.

It is particularly suited for operations where the size, weight and quality of the pallets to be stored can’t be predicted or controlled and/or when there are large quantities of many different product lines.

Pallets are usually supported on standard pallet racking beams but the addition of decking on all or some of the locations makes it possible to store pallets of mixed front-to-back depths, non-palletised boxes & cartons and irregularly-shaped items.

The very high density of storage provided by mobile racking and its single operating aisle maximises the capacity within the smallest possible physical space and delivers 100% selectivity. This is why mobiles are so often the system of choice for cold stores. Minimising the space permits significant efficiencies in energy usage to be achieved. In addition, the mobile bases themselves only consume power when they are moving and only draw down an average of 1 Kilowatt–hour of energy to move 300 tonnes of load.

Storax Powerack has been designed and developed to be very low maintenance. The motors are reliable gearmotors. The system uses disc brakes and a direct drive system. Each base has a minimum of 2 motors and 2 brakes which together deliver safe, smooth operation and controlled stopping at all stages of travel.

Requiring just one annual inspection, 90% of Storax Powerack installations are otherwise maintained by companies through the use of their own in-house resource.

POWERACK – CE-COMPLIANT MOBILE RACKING SYSTEM

Storax Ranger is an ultra-high-density pallet storage system. It is designed around the use of one or more intelligent shuttles that are controlled by RF (Radio Frequency) or WIFI communications that interface with programmable software and provide the shuttle with its instructions.

Conceptually similar to Drive-In, the major difference is that in a Ranger shuttle installation the fork lift truck never enters the storage lanes. Instead the truck operator places the shuttle at the front face of the required location and it travels into the lane to perform its required tasks - typically the storage, retrieval or marshalling of pallets.

Once it has been deposited by fork lift truck in a lane, the shuttle works autonomously without further human intervention until it has completed its programmed tasks. This leaves the truck and the driver free to carry out other duties or to deploy another shuttle (or shuttles) elsewhere in the installation. Shuttles reduce the number of fork trucks needed while also delivering significant productivity improvements.

The on-load face of each lane is fitted with guide angles to assist with the correct placement of the shuttle on its rails, while metal end-stops keep the shuttle captive in the rack. Each shuttle is fitted with a unique, robust and reliable hydraulic lifting system using food-grade oil, and can handle loads weighing up to 2 tonnes. The shuttle detects the pallet, positions itself underneath, lifts the pallet clear of the rails and performs the required task.

Unlike Drive-in or gravity-fed Dynamic racking there is no technical or functional restriction on the tunnel lengths in a Ranger system: the maximum operating length is limited only by the available physical space and/or the operation. As it is the shuttle rather than the fork lift truck that enters the racking lanes, Storax Ranger systems are considerably less susceptible to fork truck impact damage than Drive-in schemes, while the practical safe working height of a Ranger installation is typically only limited by the lift-height capability of the fork lift truck. In addition, Ranger’s rigid framework enables higher pallet loads and system heights to be achieved when compared with conventional Drive-in.

RANGER – CE-COMPLIANT SHUTTLE STORAGE SYSTEM

Storax Ranger is designed and manufactured entirely ‘in-house’ by the Ramada-Storax Group. This includes all of the racking structure, rails, shuttles and control systems. Whether it’s stock-control, barcode scanning and Radio-frequency identification (RFiD), handling multiple types of pallet or creating integrated Warehouse Management Systems, Storax Ranger can be configured to deliver a custom-built, fully-integrated solution.

Storax Cantilever racking provides bespoke, dense storage for both static and mobile applications. Cantilever racks are typically specified for the storage of long items – eg pipes, bars, tubes and cylinders. However, it is also an excellent choice for the storage of irregular-shaped items that can’t be palletised but that need to be held within the safety of a racking framework when other methods of storage don’t fit the bill.

Cantilever racks provide continuous, unbroken runs of storage: this means that products of differing lengths can be stored side by side on each level to maximise occupancy rates. In addition, Cantilever racking can accommodate overhanging loads which further improves the usability of each level.

Cantilever racks are ideal for the storage of bulky items which, although regular in shape, can’t realistically or cost-effectively be stored on standard pallet racking. Bulk timber, plasterboard sheets, out-sized paper, panels and flat-pack furniture are just some examples of products that lend themselves to being stored in a Cantilever scheme.

STORAX CANTILEVER – MULTI-PURPOSE, HIGH-DENSITY RACKING

The arms in Storax Cantilever are adjustable on a 100mm pitch and are quickly and easily moved to adjust the heights of the levels to accommodate changing operational needs eg random stock locations or varying stock profiles.

The uses for this versatile product are many and varied, limited only by imagination and innovation.

Storax SP55 Longspan is an adaptable, hand-loaded shelving system manufactured to EN 15512 design standards.

Although Longspan is traditionally regarded as being principally for the longer term storage of heavy, regular-shaped items like archive boxes, Storax SP55 offers much more flexibility than that. It can be designed to accommodate an extensive range of shapes and sizes of product, in numerous different applications.

Where building heights permit, SP55 can be designed with walkways in a 2-tier configuration or alternatively it can be installed above and/or below a mezzanine floor to maximise the storage capacity.

STORAX SP55 – LONGSPAN SHELVING TO EUROPEAN EN15512 DESIGN STANDARD

The shelving framework can be decked out with a range of different shelving media. For example, using a ‘stepped’ beam in conjunction with chipboard or steel panels results in a flush, snag-free picking face: this helps to make picking and replenishment easier and safer for system operatives.

As well as providing conventional hand-loaded static shelving, Storax SP55 can also be incorporated with bespoke parts like garment hanging rails (left) or tote bin support channels (below, left) to create specialised storage and picking solutions in FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods) operations. The addition of bar code labels throughout an installation integrates the physical storage with computerised stock control and picking systems.

Storax IM50 is a hand-loaded shelving system that is manufactured to SEMA UK design guidelines. It provides versatile, sturdy storage and is equally at home in industrial or semi-commercial environments. Bolt-free and requiring no specialist tools to build, it is straight-forward to assemble and easily dismantled and re-located if required. If the stock profile changes it is simple to adapt, add to or modify to suit the new business needs.

End frames come with blue or grey uprights as standard, in open or solid configurations; shelving bays are available with open or closed backs using solid cladding or weldmesh, to suit the application.

The addition of optional accessories creates suitable storage for an assortment of diverse products. Deploying dividers creates smaller locations on each level. Alternatively, plastic storage bins that sit on the shelves create pull-out locations for extra flexibility and improved stock visibility. Irregularly-shaped items can be stored in tote boxes on the shelves to keep them together if desired.

Because it is a hand-loaded system, when IM50 is used as high-bay storage appropriate steps or order pickers should be used to ensure safe systems of working for the operatives.

STORAX IM50 AND DX ANGLE SHELVING TO SEMA UK DESIGN GUIDELINES

DX Angle shelving relies on nuts, bolts and corner plates to provide rigidity and to support some of the shelf levels. For this reason it suits applications where the shelf positions are not expected to need to change with any regularity.

In addition to its use as a shelving product, Storax DX Angle is a strong and versatile construction system with endless applications.

It is quick and easy to cut the angle to size and bolt it together to make bespoke storage racks, benches, trollies and support frameworks.. For applications and situations

where aesthetics and easy adjustability are less important than functionality Storax DX Slotted Angle shelving provides a cost-effective, serviceable alternative. DX Angle can be modified,

dismantled and re-used repeatedly in numerous configurations.

Ramada-Storax is one of only a few factories in Europe that can design and produce clad-rack buildings, using structural steel members to create both the storage facility itself and the framework that supports the warehouse perimeter cladding.

These structures can be built up to 40 metres high and are an extremely cost-effective way to create ultra-compact storage. When integrated with Storax iCube - a 3-dimensional, automated, driverless pallet storage and retrieval solution - maximum density with 100% selectivity and random access to every pallet is achieved.

The original Ramada-Storax factory was established in 1935, initially to manufacture special metal blades. It was re-built in 1962, extended in 1985 and has continually been updated and modernised to keep pace with developments and innovations in the manufacture and specialist treatment of metal products.
