The Ramada Storax Group

The Ramada Storax factory was founded in northern Portugal in 1935 by engineer Francisco Ramada. The company became a licenced manufacturer for Dexion Ltd – renowned UK founder of the storage and materials handling industry - in 1958. Their relationship endured for nearly 40 years.

Independent since the late 1990’s, Ramada Storax acquired a UK-based company called Barpro in 2001. Having developed an innovative rail-mounted storage system in 1968, Barpro was the pioneer of the modern mobile racking industry and had continued to hone their invention, becoming world leaders over the ensuing 30 years.

When the Ramada Storax Group acquired Barpro in 2001, the company inherited the leading edge technology and know-how that became the springboard to further innovative research and development. Today Ramada Storax export their systems world-wide and are also involved in the creation of pan-European EN design standards.

In 2003 Ramada Storax backed the creation of a new trading division of Storax UK: Storax Racking Supplies. As a stock-holding source of supply-only racking and shelving for trade dealers in the industry, the business is now a well-established and respected supplier in the storage equipment marketplace.

Storax UK are Associate members of SEMA and full members of the Sema Distributor Group.

The Ramada Storax Group plays an active part in the creation of industry standards with the European Federation of Materials Handling (FEM).

Storax SP55 Longspan is an adaptable, hand-loaded shelving system manufactured to EN design standards. It provides cost-effective storage, whether the requirement is for a simple run of shelving or a complete warehouse fit-out.

Standard heights are 914mm – 6096mm on 76mm increments.

Front-to-back frame depths range from 400mm – 1400mm; left-to-right spans of each individual bay can range from 900mm – 2700mm.

Beam levels in every bay are easily raised or lowered independently of each other on a 38mm pitch, while the system’s modular design permits bays of different sizes and spans to be combined within the same installation.

This extensive adjustability makes it possible to tailor each scheme to make storage, segregation, stock identification and order fulfilment easy and efficient.

Although Longspan is traditionally regarded as being principally for the longer term storage of heavy, regular-shaped items like archive boxes, Storax SP55 offers much more flexibility than that. It can be designed to accommodate an extensive range of shapes and sizes of product, in numerous different applications.

Where building heights permit, SP55 can be designed with walkways in a 2-tier configuration or alternatively it can be installed above and/or below a mezzanine floor to maximise the storage capacity.

Storax SP55 Longspan shelving is designed for use in temperature ranges between +3° - +36° C or below -5° C (thus avoiding dew point ranges that might produce moisture). It can be decked out with chipboard, timber, solid or mesh steel shelves: the appropriate choice of shelving medium is influenced by application, by appearance, by cost and/or by personal preference.

For example, using a ‘stepped’ beam in conjunction with chipboard or steel panels results in a flush, snag-free picking face: this helps to make picking and replenishment easier and safer for the system’s operatives.

SP55 beams simply drop in at the required position in the uprights and are held in place with pin-style locks: these are easily removed if beam positions need to be adjusted but are designed not to dislodge accidentally under normal operating conditions. Their bright zinc finish means that the head of each lock is plain to see, providing visual assurance that the beams are correctly and securely fitted into place.

As well as providing conventional hand-loaded static shelving, Storax SP55 can also be incorporated with bespoke parts like garment hanging rails (left) or tote bin support channels (right) to create specialised storage and picking solutions in FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods) operations.

The addition of bar code labels throughout an installation integrates the physical storage with computerised stock control and picking systems.

Storax SP55 shelving bays combined with custom-made ‘pigeon-holes’ creates multiple storage bins for operations that need to stock and pick a diverse mix of small and medium-sized parts in a range of shapes and sizes.

Conversely, SP55 can be designed to hold parts that are all similar in form and dimension, but that need to be supported in a particular way for storage and handling purposes.

Because hand-loaded schemes are picked and replenished physically by the operators rather than by using manual handling equipment, the maximum system height is limited by prevailing manual handling regulations and the practicality of operating the system safely, not by the storage product itself.

Higher storage levels should be accessed using suitable steps or order picking trucks if required.

In very high warehouses, Storax SP55 can be designed using integral walkway joists to support a 2-tier operation with permanently-sited stairs to provide high-level access and under-floor lighting to illuminate the low-level picking area.

In addition to SP55 Longspan other shelving products in the Storax range include Storax IM50 adjustable shelving (left and below, left) and Storax DX Slotted Angle shelving and construction system (right and below).
