Every slate roof is unique with its own natural character. Structures incor-porating slate are known for their beautybut they are revered for their longevity.Beautiful slates can easily be supplied from a vast array of inter-na-tional sources. However, it must bestressed that not all slates are createdequal. Without longevity, the benefits of aslate roof are lost. Securing a durable slateis not a simple choice but Greenstone canease this challenge. From our 58 quarries,in what is noted around the world as theSlate Valley of Vermont, we provide thecomplete range of Vermont colors, blendsand textures. Since1955 our stone has been worked ex-clusively by Green-stone trainedcraftsmen. Our pro-duction facilitiescombine time-proven traditional techniqueswith the latest manufacturing technologiesand our quality control is second to none.

Greenstone Slate Company quarries pro-duce exceptionally fine quality stone solelyfor roofing slate. This has lead GreenstoneSlate to become a principal producer of col-ored slate roofing worldwide. We deliverconsistently high quality product, excellencein customer service, comprehensive instal-lation support, and competitive pricing ofVermont products. It is not just slate, it isdifferent, it is Greenstone Vermont slate.

The one-hundred year roof!Greenstone Slate® is ASTM S1 rated — thebest rating available. S1 slate israted to last at least 75 years. We take that to the next leveland provide a 100-year guar-antee. (Ask to see our warrantystatement for complete details.)

Beautiful yet practicalSlate is considered one of the world’s most beautiful roofs. Slate’s extended lifeexpectancy and durability creates an overalllow cost of ownership. That’s why it is fre-quently the choice for institutional applica-tions such as colleges, churches andgovernment buildings.

Slate will complement any structure designdue to its wide range of:

Superior building protectionThe weight and density of Vermont slate iskey to its superior ability to protect a struc-ture — Greenstone Slate is Miami-Dade ap-proved for hurricane zones! Howeversynthetic product and lesser quality slateproducers will often claim that Vermontslate is too heavy for the average roof. Thisis generally not true though in certain situations it is desirable to reducethe installed weight of slate from 9 to 6 lbs

per sq ft. For more than 20 years, inno-va-tive companies have been incorporatingGreenstone Slate® into their lightweightroof installation systems. The crux of this de-velopment was to obtain a lightweight slateapplication without jeopardizing the integrity

of the natural product. These strategic part-nerships have enabled us to provide re-duced weight slate roofs with provendurability, and new benefits including:

• A natural alternative to synthetics, ideal for re-roofing cedar shake.

• Batten-style installs that help cool the roof, are walkable, and have anelegant, flush-mount, integrated solarpanel option.

• New and efficient approaches to stonecladding for buildings.

More Greenstone benefits• Slate is fireproof and waterproof.

• It is permanent, a lifetime investment.

• It’s density provides an insulating fac-tor that helps save energy.

• Stone is impervious to fungi and mold.

• It resists climate/temperature changes.

• Slate is sustainable, keeping five ormore asphalt roofs out of a landfill.

• It is a hail resistant Class 3 or Class 4roofing material (depending on grade).

To the left is a home that has a roof constructed using exclusively Semi-Weath-ering Gray/Green, Standard Grade: RoughTexture. A popular color when a traditionalslate appearance is desired for the roof.

Natural selectionGreenstone Slate® is measured by eye tothickness and is then split by hand. It is trulythe result of a craftsmen’s touch. However,as the result of the process, no two pieceswill be exactly the same. Once split to a

thickness and thentrimmed to a di-mension, the slate is “graded” ac-cording to the uni-formity in thick-nessof each piece. There are no machines orcalipers used in this “grading tech-nique”. It is thecharacteristics of

the natural stone and the trained experienceof the craftsmen that separates Green-stone’s Vermont slate from all other prod-ucts. There is truly no comparativeroofing product! Greenstone Slate® comesin five thicknesses or grades that—just likecolor—contributes substantially to the lookof the roof. It also determines the ultimatelevel of protection, including hail rating.

Architectural GradeWhen it comes to value, Architectural Gradeis the most selected, measuring between3/8" and 1/2" thick. It offers the best mix ofcharacteristics with rich textures for aes-thetic appeal, a high level of durability—it has earned a Class 4 hail rating (checkwith your insurance company about hail cov-erage for slate roofs)—yet will not need theextensive additional structural support thatheavier grades require. However, it weighs1200 to 1600 lbs per square.

Heavy GradeHeavy Grade slates exhibit strong stone sur-face texture, and is visually discernible fromsynthetics. Measuring 1/2" to 3/4" in thick-ness they bring a more robust texture to theroof, as well as additional strength. ThisClass 4 hail rated slate weighs 1800 to 2200lbs per square.

Estate GradeWith Rough Texture Grade characteristicsand each slate at least 3/4" thick, nothinglooks quite like an Estate Grade Vermontslate roof. With its enhanced grain, it is an un-mistakable slate roof with an expected usage

of over 150 years. Impervious to hail andeven bullets, these ultra-premium slatesweigh 2500 to 3000 lbs per square.

Standard Grade: Rough TextureThis slate is split at thicknesses between1/4” to 3/8”. It has the surface appearanceof Heavy Grade in a thinner slate. It is idealfor traditional projects with a goal to limit theweight from 900 to 1000 lbs per square.Standard Grade Rough Texture is also com-monly used in conjunction with our light-weight installation systems, reducing the installed weight to under 6 lbs per sq ft.

Standard Grade: SelectsThese slates are a very uniform 1/4" in thick-ness and have smooth surfaces. SelectGrade roofing slate is most commonly usedin repair projects. It weighs from 680 to 780lbs per square.
