Local bluegrassrock bandSomething With Strings hadnewcomers and fans alikestompingtheirfeetandsingingalong to their performance atNectarsonFriday,Nov.12.

The ensemble consists ofthree UVM alumni PatrickGiblinonbanjo,AdamHowardonguitarandCharlieWhistleron the bass, as well as onecurrent student, junior MattFrancisonthemandolin.

The recent addition ofdrummerMattVaughanisoneexample of the band breakingthe boundaries of traditionalbluegrass, with surprisingand pleasant results. Thisnew element proves to maketheir fast paced songs moredanceablethanever.

    [We are] just trying

to write high energy songsthat resonate with people,Vaughansaid.

They certainly had thecrowd at Nectars intriguedwith a versatile blend ofcountry, rock and bluegrass, even adopting a slow dubstyle at times. By the end oftheir second song they had aswelling crowd dancing andcheeringexuberantly.

Theyre not like anythingelse Ive heard, ChamplainCollegejuniorLaurenSwansonsaid, Theres no other choicebuttodance.

The five musicianscontinued to keep the crowdon their toes throughout theirhourandahalfset, witheachbandmemberperformingleadvocalsforatleastonesong.

The distinctive warblingtwangs of both Giblins banjoand Franciss mandolin bring

a lot to this bands unique, vibrant feel. Both membersare originally guitar players, havingpickedupthesecountryinstruments solely for theband.

For me, personally, [I]gottheshortendofthestick,Giblinsaid,[I]hadtopickupthe banjo and just practice dayinanddayout.

    Franciss newfound

proficiency is equallyimpressive, ashepickedupthemandolin less than two yearsago, less than a year beforejoining the band in March. On stage, he appears as if ina trance, staring off vacantlywhile picking away at hisinstrumentfuriously.

Though bluegrass doesntexactly fit the popularconception of the genre thatyounger demographics arelistening to, for SomethingWith Strings, it seems to beworking.

Burlington has a uniquemusical taste in what theyrespondto,Vaughansaid.

So far theyve just beenplaying shows aroundBurlington, but the membersofSomethingwithStringssaidthey hope to expand and areheadingtothestudiotorecordnextweek.

Were at a crossroads,[with] how we want tokeep going and get moreprofessional,Whistlersaid.

Now, if we cover our bartab, werehappy,Giblinsaid. Its been great, sharing whatwedowitheveryone.

Theirdevotiontothemusicisapparent, barelyleavingtimeto swill a beer after one songbeforeleapingintoanother.

They ended off their showwithahighspeedcoverofLedZeppelins Good Times BadTimesthatwasfullofcountryflair, eliciting enthusiasticcheersofthecrowd.

No one can say whats instore for these fivemusicians, but you can be sure theyll begetting Burlington crowdsmoving for the foreseeablefuture.Afterall, astheirmottostates, deep down everybodylovesbluegrass.

The Lady Killer by CeeLo Green the vocalist fromGnarls Barkley is sure tobeconsideredoneofthegreatR&B/soulalbumsof2010.

The album is centeredaround the musical themeof the 50s, with doowop, slow dance songs and tightharmonies.Onlisteningtothefirst couple tracks, listenersare sure to think otherwise, butasthealbumblossoms, themusical ideas of the 50s areputfrontandcenter.

The intro, Lady KillerTheme, sets up the storybehind the album. Greentells the listener that he hasa license to kill ladies over abackdropofJamesBondstyleinstrumentation.

    Theintrothenblendsrightinto Bright Lights BiggerCity.

A techno backdrop tointroduce the piece stronglycontrasts the violin heard attheendoftheintropiece.Thehighlight of the song comesduring each of the chorusesin which the techno intro isrepeated while being backed

    by Green, violins, drums andbass.

    The most famous song ofthealbum,FuckYou,followsBrightLights.

This song has gained hugepopularity over the Internetdue to its use of 50s rockstyling and the modern daystory of an unrequited lovethat lasts the entirety of thenarratorsyounglife.

Thehighlightof thealbumby far, Green uses catchybeatsandlyricsfullofpopularculture references to produceone of the biggest hits of theyear, andoneofmyfavorites.

Bodies is my leastfavorite piece on the album. The lyrics seem out of place

    with the previous songs andthepremiseofthesongisverybland.

Satisfied is a song thatfollows in much the samevein as Fuck You. A cheeryintroduction of lively hornssetsupGreensverseinwhichhe autotunes his voice for thefirsttime, withgreateffect.Anallgirlgroupofbackupsingerssing all the choruses. All thereasons to love Fuck Youapply to Satisfied, anotherhighlightofthealbum.

In Cry Baby mypersonal favorite song on thealbum Green incorporatesa vibranthorn section, violins

    and backup singers that canbeheardinallofthefollowingsongs.

Old Fashioned is just asthe title says, but in a goodway.Thelistenerissweptintoaslowbasslineandsomewhatjumpy piano part that soundsexactly like a 50s slow danceas Green calls his love oldfashioned much like hisreference to the Atari gamingsysteminFuckYou.

Theoutro, alsonamedTheLadyKillerTheme, continuesmuch like the intro did butwitharockguitarpartstartingthe piece off. The album endswith a chorus singing lady

    killer.This albumwas one of the

    fewR&BalbumsthisyearthatIhavebeenabletolistenfromstarttofinishwithoutskippingoveranyofthesongs.

Greens ability to mix50s sounds with modernstorytelling succeeds in suchan engrossing fashion. Thebackup singers definitelyhelped strengthen the album, particularly on Satisfied.PrettymucheverysongexceptBodies is great and shoulddefinitelybeanewpartofyourcollection.
