Holy Infant King Novena

The 25th day of the month is traditionally dedicated to the Infant Jesus, whose 17th century statue has been solemnly crowned and enthroned above the High altar of our Shrine. A Votive High Mass of the Nativity is celebrated at the Shrine at 7:00pm on the 25th day of every month.

In preparation for this monthly commemoration of the Infant King, a Novena prayer in His honor is recited after daily Mass from the 17th through the 25th of every month.

O Divine Infant Jesus, I have recourse to Thee. Please, through Thy Blessed Mother, assist me in this necessity (mention intention here), because I firmly believe that Thy Divinity can help me. I hope with confidence to obtain thy holy grace. I love Thee with all my heart and with all the strength of my soul. I repent sincerely of my sins and I beg Thee, O Good Jesus, to grant me the strength to triumph over them. I resolve never more to offend Thee and I come to offer myself to Thee with the inten-tion of enduring everything rather than to displease Thee. Henceforth, I desire to serve Thee with fidelity and, for the love of Thee, O Divine Infant, I will love my neighbor as myself. All powerful Infant, O Jesus, I implore Thee again, assist me in this need. Grant me the grace of possessing Thee eternally with Mary and Joseph and of adoring Thee with the angels in the heavenly court. Amen. “The more you honor me, the more I will bless you.”

Letter from the Vicar General & Provincial Superior

Dear Faithful, The seminary is the heart of every community. Fertile ground for vocations, it is the seminary which forms future priests. According to St. Charles, the holy Archbishop of Milan and patron of seminar-ies, the Superior should guard the seminary with his life. Those in charge of the education of the young men called to the holy priesthood have a very special responsibility.

For this reason, the founder and Prior General of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest, Msgr. Gilles Wach, has always taken great care to staff the Seminary with very experienced members of our Institute. Given the ever increasing number of American vocations among our seminarians and sisters, there has for a long time been an urgent need for a spiritual director well-versed in several languages and familiar with the American culture. Hence during his visit to the United States during the month of May, Msgr. Wach decided to select for this important task a priest well-seasoned by his many years of service, a priest in whom he has the greatest confidence for his fatherly wisdom and his well rounded personality.

At the same time, the exceptional growth of the Institute worldwide and as well as in the United States, calls for additional priestly appointments. Msgr. Wach will send more priests to the United States, Father Laurent Jantaud, former guest master of the Seminary, and Father Henry Fragelli, our newly ordained priest from the United States.

Thus, it is my task to announce the following changes, all of which are related to a change which is both important and essential and which will greatly benefit not only our seminary, but also all of you, dear faithful, who desire to have well-trained priests as your shepherds:

Reverend Father Karl Lenhardt, until now Vice-Provincial and Rector of St. Francis de Sales Oratory in St. Louis, will be appointed spiritual director to the international Seminary and the Sisters Adorers of the Royal Heart.

Reverend Father William Avis, until now Vicar at St. Francis de Sales Oratory in St. Louis, will be appointed as Rector of Old St. Patrick’s in Kansas City and continue his duties as Provincial Mas-ter of Ceremonies.

Reverend Father Olivier Meney, until now Rector of St. Mary’s Oratory in Wausau, will be appointed Rector and Administrator of the Oratory and Parish of St. Stanislaus in Milwaukee, with the additional charge of supervising the Oratory of St. Mary’s in Wausau.

Reverend Father Henry Fragelli, newly ordained, will be appointed Pro-Rector of the Oratory of St. Mary’s in Wausau under the authority of Father Olivier Meney.

Page 5: VERITATEM FACIENTES IN CARITATE - Institute of Christ … ·  · 2012-07-27Holy Infant King Novena ... All powerful Infant, O Jesus, I implore Thee again, ... there has for a long

Reverend Father Michael Wiener, Esq., until now Episcopal Delegate for the Extraordinary Form in Oakland and Rector of the Oratory of Our Mother of Perpetual Help in St. Jose, will be ap-pointed Rector of St. Francis de Sales Oratory in St. Louis.

Reverend Father Laurent Jantaud, until now guest master of the International Seminary in Gricigliano, will be appointed Vicar at St. Francis de Sales Oratory with the special task to supervise the candidates to the priesthood and oblatehood at the Oratory.

Reverend Father Jean-Marie Moreau, until now Rector of St. Joseph’s Oratory in Green Bay, will be appointed Episcopal Delegate for the Extraordinary Form in the Diocese of Oakland and Rec-tor of the Oratory of Our Mother of Perpetual Help in the Diocese of San Jose.

Reverend Father Denis Buchholz, until now Pro-Rector of Old St. Patrick’s Oratory in Kansas-City, Missouri, will be appointed Rector of the Oratory of St. Joseph in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and continue his duties as Provincial Bursar.

All other priests of the Institute in the USA remain in their present assignments. The new appointments have been made with the consent of the Most Reverend Ordinaries of the respec-tive Dioceses. These changes were decided in the month of May according to the needs of the Seminary and the growth of the Institute and are unrelated to any of the recent papal appointments in some of these Dioceses or Archdioceses. Most of these changes will be effective after our General Chapter in the last week of August.

Msgr. Gilles Wach and I are deeply grateful to the Vice-Provincial of the American Province, Rever-end Father Karl Lenhardt, and to all our priests for their dedicated service to God and souls in their former assignments. Special receptions are currently being organized as occasions to ex-press publicly this gratitude. I would encourage you to check your local church bulle-tin for details concerning the up-coming farewell celebrations for your faithful shep-herds. You can be assured that your new pastors and vicars will continue to serve you and your families with just the same spirit as their predecessors, a spirit which, coming from St. Francis de Sales, St. Benedict and St. Thomas Aquinas, is condensed in our motto: “Live the truth in charity”. The presence of the Institute of Christ the King in all our churches and Oratories in the United States remains unchanged. Soon I will be happy to announce yet another apostolate of the Institute of Christ the King in this country. Please pray for our priests, oblates, seminarians and sisters! May God bless you all! Yours very cordially in Christ the King, Msgr. R. Michael Schmitz Vicar General and Provincial Superior

From the catechism… How should we pray?

We should conform our will to the will of God, even when our prayers are not heard, because He knows better than we do what is necessary for our eternal salvation. God always hears prayers when well said; but in the way He knows to be most conducive to our eternal salvation, and not always in the way we wish. Many times our prayers are not heard, either because we ask for things not condu-cive to our eternal salvation, or because we do not ask properly.

The first and best disposition to render our prayers efficacious is to be in the state of grace; or if we are not in that state, to desire to put ourselves in it.

To pray well we specially require recollection, humility, confidence, perseverance and resignation.

To pray with recollection means remembering that we are speaking to God; and hence we should pray with all respect and devotion, as far as possible avoiding distractions, that is, every thought for-eign to our prayers. Before prayer we should banish all occasions of distraction, and during prayer we should reflect that we are in the presence of God who sees and hears us.

To pray with humility means sincerely acknowledging our own unworthiness, powerlessness and misery, and as well as this observing a respectful posture.

We should pray with confidence: we should have a firm hope of being heard, if it is to God's glory and our own true welfare.

We should pray with perseverance. It means that we should not grow tired of praying, if God does not at once hear us, but that we should ever continue to pray with increased fervor. The chief things we should ask of God are His own glory, our eternal salvation and the means of ob-taining it. It is lawful to ask God for temporal goods, but always with the condition that these be in conformity with His Holy will and not a hindrance to our salvation.

—Catechism of Pope Saint Pius X

Does it seem to you that God is not answering your prayers? Think again…

“I asked God for strength that I might achieve. I was made weak that I might learn humbly to obey. I asked for health that I might do greater things. I was given infirmity that I might do better things. I asked for riches that I might be happy. I was given poverty that I might be wise. I asked for power that I might have the praise of men. I was given weakness that I might feel the need of God. I asked for all things that I might enjoy life. I was given life that I might en-joy all things. I received nothing that I asked for, but everything that I hoped for. I am among all men most richly blessed.” —Anonymous

Wisdom of the Saints

It is better to do little and to do it well; it is not by the multiplicity of the things we do that we advance in virtue,

but by the fervor with which we do them. Even the most insignificant actions are great and excellent

when they are performed with a pure intention and a fervent desire to please God.

Our Lady of Perpetual Help Novena devotions every Saturday after 8:00am Mass

Supposed to have been painted in the thirteenth century, the picture of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Byzantine in style, is painted on wood with background of gold. The icon depicts the Blessed Virgin Mary wearing a dress of dark red with blue mantle and veil. On the left the Archangel Michael carries the lance and sponge as instruments of Je-sus Christ’s crucifixion. On the right the archangel Gabriel carries a triple-bar cross and nails. Over the figures in the picture are some Greek letters which form the abbreviated words Mother of God, Jesus Christ, Archangel Michael, and Archangel Gabriel respectively. This type of icon is a later type of the Hodegetria composition, where Mary is pointing to her Son, known as a Theokotos of the Passion. Alarmed by a pre-sentiment of His Passion, the Christ Child runs to his mother for comfort.

From Our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI

“There are many today who claim that God should be left on the sidelines, and that religion and faith, while fine for individuals, should either be excluded from the public forum altogether or included only in the pursuit of limited pragmatic goals. This secularist vision seeks to explain human life and shape society with little or no reference to the Creator. It presents itself as neutral, impartial and inclusive of everyone. But in reality, like every ideology, secularism imposes a world-view. If God is

irrelevant to public life, then society will be shaped in a godless im-age. When God is eclipsed, our ability to recognize the natural order, purpose, and the “good” begins to wane. What was ostensibly pro-moted as human ingenuity soon manifests itself as folly, greed and selfish exploitation. And so we have become more and more aware of our need for humility before the delicate complexity of God’s world.” —Address to youth, July 17, 2008

TWELTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST, AUGUST 3

Epistle: II Corinthians 3:4-9 Brethren: Such confidence we have through Christ towards God. Not that we are sufficient to think anything of ourselves, as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is from God. Who also hath made us fit ministers of the new testament, not in the letter, but in the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit quickeneth. Now if the ministration of death, engraven with letters upon stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not steadfastly behold the face of Moses, for the glory of his countenance, which is made void: how shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather in glory? For if the ministration of condemnation be glory, much more the ministration of justice aboundeth in glory.

Gospel: St. Luke 10: 23-47 At that time, Jesus said to His disciples: Blessed are the eyes that see the things which you see. For I say to you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see the things that you see, and have not seen them; and to hear the things that you hear, and have not heard them. And behold a certain lawyer stood up, tempting Him, and saying: Master, what must I do to possess eternal life? But He said to him: What is written in the law? how readest thou? He answering, said: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbor as thyself. And He said to him: Thou hast answered rightly: this do, and thou shalt live. But he, willing to justify himself, said to Jesus: And who is my neighbor? And Jesus answering, said: A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers, who also stripped him, and hav-ing wounded him went away, leaving him half dead: and it chanced that a certain priest went down the same way, and seeing him, passed by. In like manner also a Levite, when he was near the place and saw him, passed by. But a certain Samaritan being on his journey, came near him, and seeing him, was moved with compassion, and going up to him, bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine; and setting him upon his own beast, brought him to an inn, and took care of him: and the next day he took out two pence, and gave to the host, and said: Take care of him, and whatsoever thou shalt spend over and above, I, at my return will repay thee. Which of these three, in thy opinion, was neighbor to him that fell among robbers? But he said: He that showed mercy to him. And Jesus said to him: Go and do thou in like manner.

THIRTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST, AUGUST 10

Epistle: Galatians 3: 16-22 Brethren: To Abraham were the promises made, and to his seed. He saith not: And to his seeds, as of many; but as of one, and to thy seed, which is Christ. Now this I say, that the testament which was confirmed by God, the law which was made after four hundred and thirty years, doth not disannul, to make the promise of no effect. For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise. But God gave it to Abraham by promise. Why then was the law? It was set because of trans-gressions, until the seed should come, to whom He made the promise; being ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator. Now a mediator is not of one: but God is one. Was the law then against the promises of God? God forbid. For if there had been a law given, which could give life, verily justice should have been by the law. But the Scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by the faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.

Gospel: St. Luke 17: 11-19 At that time, as Jesus was going to Jerusalem, he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee: and as He entered into a certain town, there met him ten men that were lepers, who stood afar off, and lifted up their voice, saying: Jesus, master, have mercy on us. Whom when He saw, He said: Go, show yourselves to the priests. And it came to

Page 11: VERITATEM FACIENTES IN CARITATE - Institute of Christ … ·  · 2012-07-27Holy Infant King Novena ... All powerful Infant, O Jesus, I implore Thee again, ... there has for a long

pass, as they went, they were made clean. And one of them, when he saw that he was made clean, went back, with a loud voice glorifying God: and he fell on his face before His feet, giving thanks: and this was a Samaritan. And Jesus answering said: Were not ten made clean? And where are the nine? There is no one found to return, and give glory to God, but this stranger. And He said to him: Arise, go thy way; for thy faith hath made thee whole.

Feast of the Assumption: August 15 HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION

Though the Church has always believed in the Assumption of Mary, the dogma was only formally defined by Pope Pius XII in 1950 in his Bull Munificentissimus Deus: “By the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and by our own authority, we pronounce, declare, and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma: that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory. Hence if anyone, which God forbid, should dare willfully to deny or to call into doubt that which we have defined, let him know that he has fallen away completely from the divine and Catholic Faith.. We, who have placed our pontificate under the special patronage of the most holy Virgin, to whom we have had recourse so often in times of grave trouble, we who have consecrated the entire human race to her Immaculate Heart in public ceremonies, and who have time and time again experienced her powerful protec-tion, are confident that this solemn proclamation and definition of the Assumption will contribute in no small way to the advantage of human society.” Note that Mary was assumed into Heaven -- taken up by the power of God, like Elias and Enoch -- while Christ ascended into Heaven under His own power. “Today the spotless Virgin, un-touched by earthly affections, and all heavenly in her thoughts, was not dissolved in earth, but truly entering heaven, dwells in the heavenly tabernacles.” St. John Damascene (676-754)

"Who, I ask, could believe that the ark of holiness, the dwelling place of the Word of God, the temple of the Holy Spirit, could be reduced to ruin? My soul is filled with horror at the thought that this virginal flesh which had begotten God, had brought him into the world, had nourished and carried him, could have been turned into ashes or given over to be food for worms." Saint Robert Bellarmine, S.J. (1542-1621) "Jesus did not wish to have the body of Mary corrupted after death, since it would have redounded to his own dishonor to have her virginal flesh, from which he himself had assumed flesh, reduced to dust." St. Alphonsus Liguori (1696-1787)
