NetBackupGetting StartedGuide

About NetBackupNetBackup provides a complete, flexible data protection solution for a variety ofplatforms. The platforms include Microsoft Windows, UNIX, and Linux systems.

NetBackup lets you back up, archive, and restore files, folders or directories, andvolumes or partitions that reside on your computer.

NetBackup includes the server and the client software as follows:

■ Server software resides on the computer that manages the storage devices.

■ The master server manages backups, archives, and restores. You configurebackup policies on the master server to determine the computers (clients)and the files that you want to back up. The master server is also responsiblefor media and device selection for NetBackup. The master server containsthe NetBackup catalog. The catalog contains the internal databases thatcontain information about NetBackup backups and configuration.

■ Media servers provide additional storage by allowing NetBackup to use thestorage devices that are attached to them. Media servers can also increaseperformance by distributing the network load. Media servers can also bereferred to as device hosts.

■ Client software resides on the computers that contain data to back up. (Serversalso contain client software and can be backed up.)

NetBackup also accommodates multiple servers that work together under theadministrative control of one NetBackup master server (see Figure 1).

How a NetBackup system worksDuring a backup or an archive, the client sends backup data across the network toa NetBackup server. The NetBackup server manages the type of storage that isspecified in the backup policy.

During a restore, users can browse, then select the files and directories to recover.NetBackup finds the selected files and directories and restores them to the disk onthe client. Refer to the NetBackup Backup, Archive, and Restore Getting StartedGuide for more information about restores.

How to make a NetBackup system work for youPolicies determine when backups occur. Policies include schedules for automatic,unattended backups of the NetBackup clients (server-directed backups). Policiesalso define when you can back up and restore files manually (user-directedoperations). Refer to theNetBackup Administrator's Guide for UNIX, Windows, andLinux, Volume I for more information on policies.

NetBackup administrators can set up periodic or calendar-based schedules toperform automatic, unattended backups for clients across a network. Anadministrator can carefully schedule backups to achieve systematic and completebackups over a period of time, and optimize network traffic during off-peak hours.

The backups can be full or incremental. Full backups back up all client files.Incremental backups back up only the files that have changed since the last backup.

The NetBackup administrator can allow users to back up, restore, or archive thefiles from their computer. (An archive operation backs up a file, then deletes theoriginal file from the source disk if the backup is successful.)

Recommended SORT procedures for newinstallations

3 Specify the requested information

Select the appropriate product from the drop-down menu.For NetBackup select NetBackup Enterprise Server orNetBackup Server.

5 A checklist corresponding to your choices is created. You can modify yourselections from this screen, and click Generate Checklist to create a newchecklist.

You can save the resulting information as a PDF. Numerous options areavailable for NetBackup and many of them are covered in the generatedchecklist. Please spend time reviewing each section to determine if it appliesto your environment.

To create a system-specific installation report for Windows

1 Go to the SORT website:

https://sort.veritas.com/

2 Select SORT > SORT for NetBackup

3 In the Custom Reports Using Data Collectors, select the Data Collectortab.

4 Select the radio button forGraphical user interface and download the correctdata collector for your platform.

The data collector is OS-specific. To collect information about Windowscomputers, you need the Windows data collector. To collect information aboutUNIX computers, you need the UNIX data collector.

5 Launch the data collector after it finishes downloading.

6 On theWelcome screen, select NetBackup from the product family sectionand click Next.

7 On the System Selection screen, add all computers you want analyzed. ClickBrowse to see a list of computers you can add to the analysis. Veritasrecommends starting the tool with an administrator or a root account.

8 When all systems are selected, review the System names section and clickNext.

9 In the Validation Options screen, under Validation options, select the versionto which you plan to upgrade.

10 Click Next to continue

11 The utility performs the requested checks and displays the results. You canupload the report to My SORT, print the results, or save them. Veritasrecommends that you upload the results to the My SORT website for ease ofcentralized analysis. Click Upload and enter your My SORT login informationto upload the data to My SORT.

12 When you are finished, click Finish to close the utility.

To create a system-specific installation report for UNIX or Linux

1 Go to the SORT website:

https://sort.veritas.com/

2 Select SORT > SORT for NetBackup

3 Change to directory that contains downloaded utility.

4 In the Custom Reports Using Data Collectors, select the Data Collectortab.

5 Download the appropriate data collector for your platform.

The data collector is OS-specific. To collect information about Windowscomputers, you need the Windows data collector. To collect information aboutUNIX computers, you need the UNIX data collector.

6 Run ./sortdc

The utility performs checks to confirm the latest version of the utility is installed.In addition, the utility checks to see it has the latest data. The utility then liststhe location of the log file for this session.

7 If requested, press Enter to continue.

8 Select the NetBackup Family at the Main Menu.

9 Select Installation/Upgrade report when promptedWhat task do you wantto accomplish?

You can select multiple options by separating your response with commas.

10 Specify the system or systems you want included in the report.

If you previously ran a report on the specified system, you may be promptedto run the report again. Select Yes to re-run the report.

The utility again lists the location of the log files for the session.

The progress of the utility is displayed to the screen.

11 Specify NetBackup when prompted for the product you want installation orupgrade reports.

12 Enter the number that corresponds to the version of NetBackup you want toinstall.

The utility again lists the location of the log files for the session.

The progress of the utility is displayed to the screen.

13 The utility prompts you to upload the report to the SORT website if you wantto review the report online. The online report provides more detailed informationthan the text-based on-system report.

14 When your tasks are finished, you can exit the utility. You have the option toprovide feedback on the tool, which Veritas uses to make improvements to thetool.

Recommended SORT procedures for upgradesVeritas recommends current NetBackup users perform the three procedures thatare listed for an initial introduction to SORT. The tool has many other features andfunctions, but these serve as a good introduction to SORT for users who alreadyuse NetBackup. In addition, the procedures provide a helpful base of knowledgefor other SORT functionality.

This remote login is necessaryfor installation and configuration of the NetBackup serverand any NetBackup agents and options. After installationand configuration are complete, it is no longer required.

■ You must install, configure, and start the cluster frameworkbefore you install NetBackup.

■ You must have defined a virtual name using DNS, NIS, orthe /etc/hosts file. The IP address is defined at the sametime. (The virtual name is a label for the IP address.)

In addition to all previously stated installation requirements, thefollowing guidelines apply to remote installations and clusterinstallations:

■ All nodes in the cluster must run the same operating systemversion, service pack level, and NetBackup version. Youcannot mix versions of server operating systems.

■ The installation account must have administrator privilegeson all remote systems or on all nodes in the cluster.

■ The source system (or primary node) must run Windows2008/2008 R2 Server/Windows 2012/2012 R2.

■ The destination PC (or clustered nodes) must haveWindows2008/2008 R2/Windows 2012/2012 R2.

■ The Remote Registry service must be started on the remotesystem.Starting with NetBackup 7.5.0.6, the NetBackup installercan enable and start the Remote Registry service on theremote system. If the Remote Registry service is not started,the installation receives the following error message:Attempting to connect to server server_namefailed with the following error: Unable toconnect to the remote system. One possiblecause for this is the absence of the RemoteRegistry service. Please ensure this serviceis started on the remote host and try again.

■ NetBackup virtual name and IP addressHave the virtual name and IP address for NetBackupavailable. You must provide this information duringinstallation.

■ Cluster support changes for media serversBeginning with NetBackup 7.1, you cannot perform a newinstallation of a clustered media server. You can, however,upgrade existing 6.x clustered media servers to NetBackup7.7.2 and still keep them clustered.

■ Windows Server Failover Clusters (WSFC)■ The shared disk that the NetBackup Group uses must

already be configured in the cluster and online on theactive node.

■ Install NetBackup from the node with the shared disk(that is, the active node).

■ Computer or host names cannot be longer than 15

Make sure that your network configuration allows all serversand clients to recognize and communicate with one another.

Generally, if you can reach the clients from a server by usingthe ping command, the setup works with NetBackup.

■ NetBackup services and port numbers must be the sameacross the network.

■ Veritas suggests that you use the default port settings forNetBackup services and Internet service ports. If you modifythe port numbers, they must be the same for all masterservers, media servers, and clients. Devices such as robots and standalone tape drives must beinstalled according to the manufacturers’ instructions andrecognized by the Windows software.

Storage devices

When you are prompted for server names, always enter theappropriate host names. Do not enter IP addresses.

Server names

Make sure to install NetBackup servers with a release levelthat is at least equal to the latest client version that you plan touse. Earlier versions of server software can encounter problemswith later versions of client software.

Mixed versions

You can only install NetBackup on these computers with thesilent installation method.
