BIRTH OF AMUL

After returning from America he was continuing his two years bond at a government creamery in Anand, Gujrat.

During that time he closely observed the exploitation of local dairy farmers by larger dairies.

The same time Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producers' Union led by Tribhuvandas was fighting against the monopoly of private diaries.

On request of Tribhuvandas, he helped them to set up pasteurization machine and designed an explicit supply chain.

Dr. Kurien's vision and extraordinary intelligence built the dairy development cooperative model into one of the largest and most successful institutions in India, called, AMUL.

Under his leadership, a new process of making skim milk powder and condensed milk from buffalo milk instead of from cow milk was invented.

This was the reason that made Amul compete successfully and well against Nestle which only used cow milk to make them.

His model of co-operative societies and two level distribution system ensured stable and regular income to farmer.

Amul's cooperative model became a success and it was replicated throughout Gujarat.

Kurien then brought the different dairy unions under the banner of Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) in 1973.
