ADVENTURE TECHNOLOGY ADVANCE
Adventure Technology’s new Advanced Series whitewater paddles off er
bombproof composite construction for all types of whitewater paddlers. In
the fi rst major composite materials advance since Kevlar came on the market
in the 1960’s, AT’s new Duraweave is a proprietary, patent-pending blend of
Innegra and carbon. When applied to the brand’s new line of whitewater
kayaking paddles, it created a paddle that is signifi cantly stronger, more
abrasion resistant, and just as lightweight as the leading competitor.
Available in three models, the powerful Geronimo is ideal for steep, shallow
creeking, while the Hercules is the go-to choice for those who do an equal
mix of playboating and river running. For kayaking who spend most of their
time playboating, the Samurai’s smaller blade is the perfect option. The
Geronimo, Hercules, and Samurai Advanced Series paddles are available in a
carbon fi ber or fi berglass option. All paddles are also available in ergonomic
or straight shaft models. $290, $375 for Carbon; $230, $300 for Fiberglass.
When Adventure Technology tested the Duraweave paddles, the results were
stunning. Extensive testing revealed that the Duraweave paddle blades are
300% stronger than competitors, while the shaft s of the paddles are 550%
stronger. Dramatic improvements are also seen in the paddles’ secondary
strength, resulting in a shaft that will maintain its structural integrity, even
with multiple impacts, meaning that while competitor paddles may break in
half in an impact situation, the AT paddles will get the paddler home safely.

DIAMONDBACK BICYCLES
Retaining the stiff -yet-compliant ride characteristics of its Podium Series
race bikes, but incorporating more upright, comfortable geometry built to
tackle longer rides, Diamondback Bicycles for 2014 will unveil eight new
men’s Century Series road bikes and fi ve new women’s Airen Series road
bikes.
Along with introducing a new Diamondback carbon frame construction
method, the Century and Airen series also off er a full spectrum of bikes,
both carbon and aluminum construction, and diff erent spec levels, targeting
diff erent kinds of riders. Staying in sync with the brand’s mantra of off ering
best-in-class performance at an array of diff erent performance and price
tiers, the Century and Airen series has bikes both for riders planning to take
on a 100 miler or cyclists looking to stay fi t on shorter weekend rides.
3535
In the Century and Airen 3, 4 and 5 bikes, the frames are built using
Diamondback’s Advanced Tube-to-Tube (ATT) design. That approach utilizes
a monocoque head tube and down tube that is joined to a monocoque
bott om bracket and chain stay. Those two structures form the core of
the frame. A tube-to-tube carbon weld is used to add the remaining
carbon tubes. Coupling these two frame-building methods produces an
exceptionally smooth, confi dence-inspiring ride.
At the top end of the line is the Century 5 Di2, equipped with Shimano’s
Ultegra Di2 11 speed electronic shift ers, DB’s carbon road fork that features
a Taper Carbon steerer tube and Continuous Fiber Technology (CFT) and
Easton EC70 Aero 31.8 Carbon bars. The similarly equipped Airen 5Di2 is
Diamondback’s premium option for women riders. There is also an Ultegra-
equipped version of the Century 5. Century 5 Di2, $4,500. Airen 5 Di2, $4,500.
Century 5, $3,500.
Aspiring cyclists looking to step into a more price-conscious option can
turn to the aluminum Century 2 and Airen 2 bikes, which are equipped with
Shimano 105 components. Century 2, $1,200. Airen 2, $1,200.
