To determine the person of the verb, the reader/listener needs to look to the subject of the sentence or clause.

Subject: Third person – hence, third person form.

Since the subject is a third person the verb will also be a third person.

Remember: The verb matches its subject in both number and voice.

As the learner may have surmised, the subject of the sentence or clause plays an important role in determining the number and the person of the verb.

For example: The drivers raced by quickly.

Subject = Plural, third person / Verb = Plural, third person.

Ergo: The number & person of the subject is the same as that of the verb!
