ON THE VERANDAH OUTDOOR SUMMER MUSIC CONCERTS 2014 AT BENARES HISTORIC HOUSE — JUNE TO AUGUST, FRIDAY EVENING AT 7:30 PM June 6 - The OCTOKATS. This WEST COAST JAZZ octet, from Toronto, enjoys entertaining fans who love Cool Jazz. Their style is synonymous with the groove popular in the Los Angeles and San Francisco club scene during the 1950’s which featured musicians such as Dave Pell, Dave Brubeck, Paul Desmond, Chet Baker and Henry Mancini. Coming off a stellar year, the OCTOKATS are pleased to present their debut CD “Cool West Coast Jazz Comes to Toronto” with special guests, Dave Pell and Pat LaBarbera. Mississauga Children’s Choir celebrated their 30th Anniversary in 2011 and performed at Benares for the first time. The love of acoustic fingerstyle guitar brought Don Ablett and Brent Cooper together some years ago. With common influences such as Bruce Cockburn, John Fahey, and Stefan Grossman, they have developed a style that has thrilled fans young and old around Southern Ontario. “On the Verandah” has been one of their favourite venues for the last six years. In 2008/9 they won the prestigious Brampton Arts Council Bravo Award for Outstanding Concert Performance by a Solo or Small Ensemble. While being a classic jazz trio, the band keeps experimenting with the sound, adding ethnic fusion and new age elements. www.jazzplazma.com July 4 - Quantum Brass. This six piece Brass group has been together for over 5 years. These local musicians play an entertaining mix of happy music from classical to popular, big band to Dixieland, show tunes to sing-a-longs and more (including a few stories to go with the music). As a faculty member at the Royal Conservatory of Music, her performances with her students at the “World and Urban Music Showcase” and for the “City of Missisauga’s Rhythms from Around the World Festival” have received excellent reviews from both audience and the media. He is out promoting/touring his 4th CD “Limitless” this summer and was the 2007 Mississauga Established Performing Artist of the Year and 2010 Canadian Contemporary Jazz Guitarist of the Year. Rob always finds a way to combine his guitar virtuosity and keen melodic sense to create his smooth sound. These two multi-instrumentalists perform not only their signature style - a blend of Celtic, traditional and original music, but are also branching out into something a little different. HMYO is an amalgamation of two long established youth orchestras (the Halton Youth Symphony and the Mississauga Youth Orchestra) into a new and stronger organization with more than 70 years combined. The HMYO consists of two distinct performing groups. Our senior group is a full symphony orchestra of 75 musicians led by our Music Director- Dr. Greg Burton. Many of those years were spent touring internationally and recording with the folk band Tamarack. He has written many songs on commission for the CBC, labour groups, and teachers’ organizations. Alex has an extensive repertoire of songs, both original and traditional, covering a wide swath of Ontario history.
