Letter to Our Readers It’s here: Summertime! In our State of New Jersey, we are blessed with approximately 125 miles of coastal shores spreading from the Bayshore area down to Cape May. If you visit any of our beaches along the shore today, you will find clean sands and magnificently clean surf. In this issue, our writers have put together a brief, but helpful guide to assist you in planning and enjoying a complete experience as you make your daily visit to our shores. Take a few minutes to review and read our Beach & Dine main feature. Then head to the beach and plan on visiting a local restaurant on your return home. And speaking of restaurants, here’s one that has “a little bit of everything” for patrons, according to its owner. Sunday sports tailgate parties, upbeat live music on weekends, pool & darts and hearty tavern food. This is the Blue Rock Cafe in Cliffwood Beach. Read more in this month’s Restaurant Profile, then make a point of stopping by. It’s worth the visit. Good music never dies … even after a 20 year hiatus. The group Colossal Street Jam has come back without missing a beat. The band originally formed back in 1989 and played together until 1994. During those five years they packed the Fastlane in Asbury Park and became the house band at the Stone Pony. Today, the band is together again and rocking the Shore area. Read more about them in this month’s Band Profile. For those of you who look forward each month to learning about our female selection for Mixologist-of-the-Month, we have a surprise for you. In this issue, our writers have chosen a male bartender. Meet Chris Lyon, a mixologist who pours libations at River Rock Restaurant & Marina in Brick. This “jack of all trades,” as Chris is known by many, is a veteran bartender has worked as bar bouncer, bar manager, bar promoter and still manages to squeeze in a part-time career as a professional poker player. To wrap things up, our “comic scribe”, Steve O introduces you to a standup comedian who has been honing his craft for more than ten years and has become an internet sensation, thanks mostly to YouTube. Read about Matt Bridgestone in this issue’s Comic Relief feature. As I said in my opening line, “It’s Summertime!” Armed with the information our writers have provided, get out there and enjoy yourselves. Thank you.

Enjoy a fantastic Sunday sports tailgate party with free food, hear upbeat live music on weekends, play pool or darts, chow down on some hearty tavern food and enjoy all of it from a restaurant view that overlooks Raritan Bay. This is the Blue Rock Cafe in Cliffwood Beach, which according to owner Billy Parker, offers “a little bit of everything,” for patrons.

Parker had been leasing the Blue Rock Cafe for about 12 years but purchased the property in 2012 after Hurricane Sandy pummeled the area destroying the restaurant and everything in it. Using the frame, which was all that remained of the building after the storm, Parker gutted what was left of the restaurant, and started from scratch to build it up. He put in new floors and walls and purchased all new equipment. Keeping the exterior of the building the same, Parker made numerous changes to the restaurant’s

interior. He dressed it up, added all new furniture and accessories, decorated it in a fitting nautical theme and lined the restaurant walls with cool sports memorabilia -- then reopened for business. “There used to be two rooms here, a bar and a dining room. We now have one big room which opened up the place. We have two bars inside and a bar and tables outside for outdoor entertainment. We also have a stage inside for live entertainment,” Parker describes. This family-friendly eatery/sports bar offers all major sports packages, in addition to a night club with live entertainment and DJs on weekend, and is a great place to enjoy hearty foods, refreshing libations, daily lunch specials and nightly dinner specials as well. There are even boat slips for “dock and dine.”

Recently reformed after a 20-year hiatus, Colossal Street Jam has come back without missing a beat and is once again tearing it up around Asbury Park. Consisting of Gene Potts on lead vocals, Sal Marra on guitar, Tony Flora on bass, and George Papa on drums.

The band originally formed back in 1989 and played together until taking an extended hiatus in 1994. But in those five years they would pack the Fastlane in Asbury Park and became the house band at the Stone Pony, performing there weekly. “Back then being 19, 20 years old, it was awesome, we had a great time,” recalls Potts. “We did Thursdays for a while then we moved up to Sundays and we just played our own material.” They would occasionally play in New York and Philadelphia, but Asbury was always considered the home of Colossal Street Jam. They put out a record in 1993 that garnered some interest from a few labels, but nothing stuck and when they felt they had hit a wall in 1994 they decided it was time to pursue other projects.

Fast forward to 2013 and the four of them decided to get back together just to jam once again as a 20-year anniversary celebration of their album; this turned into a show at

The Wonder Bar. The guys pulled a great crowd so they began writing new material and decided to give music making a full-time shot again. “We’re a little bit older, but we’re a lot wiser and it’s definitely been a nice surprise, the reaction to everything we’ve been doing,” Potts relates.

Their writing style has changed in two decades as they now write shorter and catchier songs than they did before. In the ‘90s they were more of a jam band and all their songs were open ended. They have recorded five new songs which have been released on ReverbNation to positive reviews; re-energized, they are working on more songs, so everything they play is new even though they have a backlog of songs from their original run. They made 100 CDs of their new work, all of which were sold in less than a week.

The summer isn’t booked for Colossal Street Jam, though they each continue to work on other projects, but they still meet up every other week to rehearse and write new material while they await confirmation on a few national acts as well. Potts is busy in the summer playing with the Guns 4 Hire Acoustic

Trio, and Papa runs a music school.

They currently have just one show booked right now, at the Brighton Bar in Long Branch in September, but are working on more. But even with the 20-year break, they still have a following. “We’re getting a lot of people saying we used to come to your shows all the time,” says Potts. “We kept some of that core audience. I know everybody’s older, but we are also breaking in some new fans. There are some younger kids at the shows we played with Kings X and there were some younger kids there and they’re returning to the shows. We just played with Robby Krieger of The Doors and it was crazy -- the response we had at the show and then after the show people coming up and trying to buy the new EP and T-shirts and getting our information,” Potts enthuses, adding, “It’s just been great.”

Once all their other projects slow down after the summer rush, look for Colossal Street

Jam to add more shows and complete a new album. They’re thrilled to be back making original music once again so make sure to keep an eye out for when their schedule opens up.

Be sure to like Colossal Street Jam on Facebook for any updates and head over to reverbnation.com/colossalstreetjam to listen to and buy their latest hits.

Chris Lyonby CLARE MARIE CELANO

Chris Lyon has been called a “jack of all trades,” by many. The phrase fits since this veteran bartender has worked as bar bouncer, bar manager, bar promoter and still manages to squeeze in a part-time career as a professional poker player. Lyon, who tends bar at the River Rock Restaurant & Marina in Brick, has been mixing up drinks there for years. Starting in 2001 as head bouncer when the eatery was the Marina Grill, he became a bartender there in 2006 and in 2007 he took on the position of bar manager. He left the field from 2009 to 2011 to try his hand at professional poker playing full time. “I’ve been playing poker since I was a kid,” Lyon says. “I did well when I went full-time with it in 2009. The first year I played in Atlantic City I managed to pay off my house. Although I made money the second year, it wasn’t enough so I decided to go

back to bartending and play poker part-time in Atlantic City.” Over the years, Lyon has participated in over

1000 tournaments in Atlantic City and has played cash poker as well. It seems that “#winning” should be Lyon’s own tagline. “Poker is quick easy money,” he relates, adding, “I went to AC last week at 9:00 am., picked up a quick $600, and was on my way back at 1:00 pm.’” He plays poker about three or four times a week either online or in Atlantic City, adding that he is glad online poker is now legal in the state. “Makes it easier,” he emphasizes. With the online game, he can also play poker at home. “I know how to minimize my unluckiness,” Lyon says of his poker playing. “That’s the key to the game. I think I’m better than everybody so they need to be lucky to win. So I try to minimize their ‘X’ factor so I can win more. I read people well and over the years I’ve learned how people will react to things. And, I know the game. You go with what you’re good at.” Lyon says he is three classes shy of earning his bachelor’s degree at Montclair State University and admits he didn’t complete the program in financing because he realized he “loved the night life,” and couldn’t see himself behind a desk. All he learned, however, comes in handy now and will serve him well if at some point he may indeed open his own business. Right now though, Lyon is still able to “live the nightlife” when he plays poker, no matter what time of the day or night it is.

Two on the Aisle

O N B R O A D W A Y “Fun Home” knows where you live. Granted, it’s unlikely that many details of your childhood exactly resemble those of the narrator of this extraordinary musical, which pumps oxygenating fresh air into the cultural recycling center that is Broadway. Yet this impeccably shaded portrait of a girl and her father, appearing at the Circle in the Square Theater, occupies the place where we all grew up, and will never be able to leave. That’s the shifting landscape where our parents, whether living or dead, will always reign as the most familiar and elusive people we will ever encounter. Adapted from Alison Bechdel’s finegraphic novel of a memoir, with an incisive book and lyrics by Lisa Kron and heart-gripping music by Jeanine Tesori, “Fun Home” might be described as a universal detective story. Set in three ages of one woman’s life, it tries to solve the sort of classic mystery that keeps grown-ups in analysis for decades: Who are these strange people who made me?The focus of that question here is an especially knotty case. Meet Bruce (Michael

A Review

Cerveris), who teaches high school English, restores old houses and runs a funeral home in a small Pennsylvania town. As the husband of Helen (Judy Kuhn) and a father of three, Bruce is as divided personally as he is professionally, a fastidious upholder of the perfect-family facade who picks up young men on the down low. Sounds like the stuff of a pulpy Lifetime movie, doesn’t it, or of a choked-up, closure-seeking best seller? But while “Fun Home” is likely to keep you wet-eyed, it is also wryly and compellingly clear eyed — or as clear eyed as hindsight allows, when it’s your own family you’re scrutinizing. The focus keeps changing in “Fun Home,” as do the time-stopping frames of the woman whose memory we inhabit. That’s Alison (Beth Malone), a 43-year-old graphic artist who is using her pen to draw her past into perspective. The objects she sees in the rearview mirror are both closer and farther away than they appear. She has two vital accomplices in this

task: the child and the college student she once was. These earlier versions of

Alison kept journals, trying to make sense of a world that felt slightly off-kilter for many reasons, including her own nascent attraction to other women. The adult Alison is seen peering over the shoulders (literally) of her former selves, wincing at what she was. She also conjures up the carefully restored, old house where she lived with her brothers and the Oberlin College campus, where she fell in love with a fellow student named Joan and the lonely drawing desk where Alison works to give shape and substance to her ghosts. Asbefitsaworkthat isbothacomingout (on several levels) and a coming-of-age story, “Fun Home” features two exultant hymns of sexual awakening. They are performed with spirit and style by Ms.

Skeggs(onAlison’sfirstnight with Joan) and the incomparable Ms.

Lucas (in a fabulous ode to a handsome delivery woman glimpsed in a coffee shop). And the always excellent Ms. Kuhn, whose Helen is shaped by a resentment she can barely afford to express, gives full life to a lacerating 11 o’clock ballad of repressed emotions set free. Mr. Cerveris, an unforgettably fierceSweeney Todd in John Doyle’s 2005 revival, rises to the challenge of the show’s toughest role. Bruce isn’t just a man with a double life, but a character shaped with love and exasperation, recrimination and guilt by Alison’s recollection of him. As played by Mr. Cerveris, he is both irresistible and forbidding, warmly accessible and icily opaque. In this production, the audience becomes, more than ever, part of the part of the Bechdel family circle and for better or worse (for me, it’s for better) ….. we’re home.

Matt BridgestoneThis month we’re highlighting local comedian Matt Bridgestone. Matt’s been working on his craft for more than

10 years and has become something of an internet sensation, in large part through YouTube. And never let it be said that Bridgestone is a man of very few words -- as you shall read.

Venues-NJ: You’re from Brooklyn and didn’t move to Jersey until you attended Rutgers, right? Where and when do you think you got the comedy itch?

Matt Bridgestone: I was born on October 30th, mischief night, 1978, in Brookdale hospital in Brooklyn. Brookdale was just ranked the most dangerous hospital in New York. Then I went to public school in Canarsie. I attended grade school at both P.S. 272 and P.S. 279. I read that P.S. 279 was ranked number one in the country as far as kids under the age of 11 that either dropped, out or got kicked out of school. Some schools practice the “no child left behind” program, but my school had the “no child left at all” program. I moved to New Jersey when I was 12 after my brother got robbed by a gang when he was trying to sell peanut M&M’s to raise money for a school trip. I asked if I could have a box for free, but he made me pay for it

V-NJ: How did you finally decide to gather the chutzpah and get up in front of people to do this?

MB: Comedy came into my life very early. When I was seven I tried out for my camp talent show by telling racist jokes. Thankfully, I didn’t get in. Not because I was worried I would have offended people, but because it came out years later that the guy putting the shows together was into little boys, if you know what I mean. I used to love to stay up late and watch a show called “Comic Strip Live” that

was hosted by John Mulrooney. It was all stand-up comedy and you would get to see about five comics per show. I used to go to school and do all the routines for people and crack them up. I was 10 at the time so I think I get a pass on being a joke thief.

I wrote my first joke at nine and I remember it. Here it is: So I’m playing Nintendo

and I hear, “Matthew, stop playing Nintendo, it’s time to come up for supper.”

Man, my wife never lets me have any fun. I listened to Eddie Murphy and Richard

Pryor, and knew every single one of Dice Clay’s nursery

rhymes. My brother also got me into George Carlin, which

is when I realized that comedy could make you think also. Bill Hicks took that concept to the next level for me, and he is my all-time favorite.

Camp was actually a huge part of me getting up the guts to do stand-up. I went to a place called Camp Sussex, a charity camp for poor Jewish kids from the inner city. The problem is that by the time I went there, my family was the only poor Jews left. That meant that about 90% of the people there were black and Latino. I loved it and went there for 17 years. The great part about blacks and Latinos is that if you can make them laugh they will love you forever. I used to do all the talent shows and I would write these funny rap songs and do skits with my friends and we would have the whole camp going crazy. They were a tough crowd so I knew that if I could make that group laugh that I had something special.

V-NJ: You recently opened your eponymously named club, “Bridgestone’s Comedy Club at Mara’s

Cuisine” in South Amboy. How did that come about?

MB: : I was on craigslist one day and came across this restaurant that was looking for new ideas to get people in there. I went and saw the place and was blown away by how nice it was. They also had this upstairs room that they never used. I started doing shows there and saw a lot of potential. My brother lent me the money to fix it up and turn it into a real club.

Building the club was a beautiful process because it was literally created by comedians. A lot of the comics I work with volunteered their time to come paint, clean, install a stage and lights and much more. I get such a warm feeling there because of it.

We have shows every Wednesday and Friday at 8:00 pm. (Visit bridgestonescomedyclub.com). On July 15th I got Vinny from “Jersey Shore” hosting. That should be a trip.

I also was lucky enough to have started a comedy series at the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City called the “Comedy Crapshoot.” I got some great shows coming up there too. I’m really excited for August 21st and 22nd when I will be working with one of my childhood heroes, Jake “The Snake” Roberts.

Message him on Facebook, under Matt Bridgestone, or email him at [email protected].

Comic Relief

Sadly, Selena Coppack’s aBostonian and doesn’t understand that the only real teams to root for are in NY and NJ. I jest of course (kinda, sorta). Coppack has been performing stand up for eight years and her new book, The New Rules For Blondes, launches in April.

Were you “the funny one” growing up?

I come from a very funny home and my older sister Laurel is a comedian, too. So I wasn’t really ‘the funny one’ at home so much as Laurel and I spent a lot of time writing musicals in our bedrooms, choreographing strange dance numbers, and watching “Saturday Night Live” since age 7. I think that my parents and oldest sister Emily are super hilarious, too. But yes, I’ve always been a bit of a ham and really interested in comedy and performing.

Along those lines, did you do all the school productions? Where’d you grow up? Or rather, if you’re anything like me, where were you raised?

I grew up outside of Boston and I did all of the school plays growing up -- I absolutely loved performing and the excitement of rehearsing and being in shows. I did some professional theater in Boston (at the Boston Baked Theater--now gone) and in high school I became interested in singing, too. I went to college in upstate NY where I majored in English and didn’t do any of the plays on campus; but I was in the only co-ed a cappella group on campus (the Hamilton College Hamiltones) and the improv troupe. After school I moved to Chicago

to study improv comedy further and it was improv that really led me to standup. I did improv for years and eventually I just got sick of working with other people, which makes me sound like a total curmudgeon, I know.

Stand up is very tough. You have to be able to take rejection. How’d you handle your first bomb, unless you’re the one comic who’s never experienced that?

The rejection is definitely hard and it’s something that everyone -- even my comedy idols -- have experienced at some point. Early on I think that I wanted the audience to like me, which can be dangerous territory, especially for female comedians. You have to be confident and feel entitled to be up there with the microphone and that took me a while to figure out -- how to just own the stage and trust myself more. I think of standup as like training a dog -- if you get out there and you’re confident and in control, the audience is with you. But if you exude a sense of nervousness or you seem insecure, they’ll eat you alive. I’ve been doing standup for about eight years and even now sometimes I’ll have a show where I can sense that certain people in the audience aren’t completely on board with me and it makes me feel nervous, but I know to just plow through it and keep on going and eventually I’ll hit on a joke or reference that wins them over.

Is this a means to an end? “SNL”, sitcoms, head writer--what’s your goal?

I definitely don’t think of standup as a means to an end and I think that comedians who do are pretty miserable people. It has to be its own reward or else you’re crazy to do this thing. But as far as my goal, mine is pretty broad: I’d like for my comedy (performance, writing) to pay for my life. I don’t know exactly how that will shake out, but I’d like my job to be what I love to do, which is write and perform comedy. I have a book coming out in April (The New Rules for Blondes, from It Books/HarperCollins), which I hope will open up new opportunities for me. It’s a collection of humorous essays celebrating and subverting the blonde stereotype, but it’s for readers of all hair colors.

About Big Brother / Big Sisters: National research has shown that the positive relationships between youth and their Big Brothers and Big Sisters have direct and measurable impact on the children´s lives. By participating in our youth mentoring programs, Little Brothers and Little Sisters are:

• More confident in their school work performance • Able to get along better with their families • 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs • 27% less likely to begin using alcohol • 52% less likely to skip school

Big Brothers Big Sisters is a life changing preventive program that ultimately reduces the need for possible future juvenile justice and school disciplinary intervention when the child is older and/or becomes an adult. There will always be a need for mentoring services as the number of single parents continues to grow within the county however, for those Littles that participate in the program the need for future intervention is greatly reduced.

PARTNERINGClose cooperation between parties

having shared rights and responsibilities; a common enterprise.

Worth repeating…

In our day-to-day lives, whether personal or business related, we all have reasons to “partner” or work together with others toward a common purpose or goal. Reaching this goal or completing this task often requires compromise and flexibility on both sides.

Whether in a personal relationship (marriage) or a business transaction (working with a vendor or contractor), each party must complete his/her responsibilities, while keeping in mind the rights of the other party. If this cooperation is kept “top of mind” the outcome will usually result in success.

In the hospitality industry particularly, there is a “partnering” between the venue owner and his/her staff. Each party has responsibilities to be carried out, as well as rights to be recognized and addressed.

Likewise, the proprietor and staff of an establishment have an unwritten partnership with their customers. The former have the responsibility to provide product and service mutually agreed upon, while the latter is expected to respect the rights of the owner and staff as well as to provide fair compensation for the services delivered.

Cooperation, compromise and flexibility between all partnering parties will usually lead to better understanding, less stress and greater rewards for all involved. Keep it in mind as you begin each day…
