Letter to Our Readers

Now that the weather has finally warmed up, outdoor activities are on our minds more and more. One such activity (some call it a sport) is golf, and New Jersey

offers an abundance of courses, both public and private. In this issue our writers offer you a description of 10 of the state’s top public courses plus a listing of some of the most popular local courses open to all. Enjoy the read then “hit ‘em straight.”

Want to dine in the metropolitan atmosphere of a fine NYC restaurant without facing the expense of traveling to the “Big Apple?” Visit Chris Michael’s in Wood-

bridge. This month’s featured Venue of Distinction is a combination steakhouse, lounge-style nightclub and sports bar offering virtually everything to satisfy your palate’s desire.

Naturally, we attempt in each monthly issue to educate our readers on the sub-jects of libation servers and musical performers. In this issue our writers intro-

duce you to Jess Bilof, a veteran mixologist with two priorities in her life: her fam-ily and her job. This single mom handles both with passion and devotion. Then we present funktion 11, a highly diverse, multi-talented musical group that combines the dominant percussion and horn sounds of the past with the words and lyrics of today’s music.

For your “comic relief,” our writers queried a Jersey Shore “original,” Chris Covert. Chris has worked as a stand-up comic throughout the Central NJ area since he

graduated from school. He actually credits detention in school (or as he calls it “8th period”) for igniting his career. “It’s where I refined my material” he says. Take a few minutes to read the interview with Chris.

Dining, entertainment, friendly people, libations, timely information, it’s all here in this month’s issue to help enhance your leisure time. We hope you enjoy the

“read.” Then, go out and have fun.

Restaurateur Chris Kontos had a vision -- to offer New Jersey residents New York Metropolitan dining without

the expense of the tolls and bridges needed to venture to the city.

The realization of his vision now sits in Woodbridge, on Oakwood Avenue. It’s is called Chris Michael’s Steakhouse and Lounge, and it is everything a New York City Steakhouse is – without the heavy price tag that traveling to the city for the night brings with it.

The eatery is a traditional American steakhouse that also offers a full sushi menu, expertly prepared daily for patrons.

In addition to an elegantly appointed dining room with exquisitely crafted red mahogany walls, wooden floors and intimate lighting, this unique establishment also offers an upscale yet trendy Manhattan nightlife-style lounge where guests can enjoy a variety of great music played by both DJs and live bands. Also waiting for lounge visitors are its state-of-the-art lighting and a colorful laser display to dance the night away with a special date or just gather with a group of friends. The family-owned-and-operated restaurant opened its beautiful glass doors in 2006, according to managers Maik and Valentino Kontos, sons of Chris Kontos. The Kontos family has been working in the restaurant industry for 30 years. When the Kontos› purchased the restaurant in 2006, they “gutted” the entire interior and started fresh

to bring unique metropolitan accents, such as a carpeted outdoor entryway, stunning glass doors that lead to an elegant waterfall in the foyer, a wine room with cedar walls, new copper ceilings, new lighting and a heated outdoor patio, among other accessories in the eatery’s design.

Maik Kontos explains that the design concept was a combination of a few very well-known sites. The restaurant’s intriguing waterfall fountain that greets guests is influenced by the design of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, in New York. The sizzling 450-degree hot-plate is inspired from Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse and the sushi bar with its high-end freshly prepared delicacies is a concept derived from Los Angeles.

The eatery also offers a heated outdoor patio lounge where guests can “eat, drink and smoke,” all year long, according to Maik. Dine all year long, whether it be a warm, balmy evening in June or a chilly, crisp, November night.

The two-level lounge boasts a sophisticated, trendy, modern space with comfy, soft seating, as well as tables and plenty of room to dance on the smooth, wooden floors. A large rectangular bar amid brick walls, surrounded by tables provides dining comfort. Whether it be to stop by for one of the bar’s signature cocktails, hang out for the evening for cocktails and conversation, or dance away the hours long into the night, the lounge offers all of it along with scrumptious bar foods to munch on during your stay.

The lounge is also a perfect place to view your favorite sports game on any one of 70+ large TVs strategically placed throughout. Sports games viewing are an integral part of the excitement here at Chris Michael’s, so cozy up and witness up close and personal, any of your favorite sports games, including UFC championships, football and boxing. And while you are enjoying your sports viewing be sure to sample some of the tempting appetizers offered here. The menu includes such delicious selections as “Bacon” grilled thick-cut Nueske’s Applewood-cured bacon, or the Surf and Turf selection-- jumbo shrimp and chorizo sautéed with garlic, paprika, white wine and lemon, served with crostini; or the Carpaccio, thinly sliced raw filet mignon topped with lemon, arugula, capers and shaved Parmesan Reggiano cheeses.

The restaurant offers an extensive collection of both domestic and imported wines, as well as a variety of mixed drinks, such as the “Chris Michael’s Signature Mojito,” which combines 10 Cane Rum, fresh mint and fresh lime juice.

This restaurant is unique in that it offers a combination steakhouse and Sushi bar, something not usually seen billed together. It can also boast that it offers wet-aged, Midwestern, corn-fed USDA Prime Beef served on a 450-degree sizzling hot plate, and according to Maik, only one percent of the market offers this type of prime beef, making the meal all the more desirable and special.

Venue of Distinction:

Music and fun go hand-in-hand here at Chris Michael’s which offers its patrons various specials during the week, including Monday through Friday Happy Hour from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. Enjoy Happy Hour reduced prices on drinks

and a bar menu that presents late-night appetizers, such as Colby Beef Sliders, Pizza, Burgers, Wraps, Wings, and Sushi, among other treats.

Monday night is Industry Night at Chris Michael’s where those who work in the restaurant industry will be treated to a 50 percent discount on sushi and drinks and bar menu. Thursday is Latin night for those who like the Latin flavor. Friday night we have a variety of Guest DJs along with our resident DJ who spin today’s hits and house music. Saturday night is more of an open music forum. DJs Little Nicky and Timmy D spin their tunes on both levels of the lounge, luring guests to play in the glittering atmosphere and flashing light show, to a mixture of hits. If the lounge is your nighttime destination, dress for the occasion with your trendy outfit, and sparkle in the New York City-style nightlife that awaits you in this sophisticated atmosphere. If a more intimate environment is your desire, Chris Michael’s will accommodate you with its mellower dining room where guests can indulge in a delicious meal in an atmosphere that allows for quiet conversation, romance and intimate dining. Meals are served a la carte. Signature dishes at Chris Michael’s include juicy Bone-In Rib Eye Steak. Other menu choices include Filet, the tenderest cut of beef guaranteed to melt in your mouth. Maik says it is so tender, it can be cut with a butter knife. Juicy, New York Strip and Porterhouse Steaks are also fine selections. Rack of Lamb, pan seared with a rosemary and brandy demi-glace reduction served with smashed potatoes is popular here. Pasta lovers can indulge in Capellini Pomodoro, fresh plum tomato sauce with fresh basil tossed with fresh mozzarella or Fresh Clam Sauce, fresh little-neck clams sautéed with garlic, olive oil, fresh herbs and white wine, served over linguini. As a nod to healthy fare, Chris Michaels›s uses zero trans-fat oil for frying as well as free-range chickens. The Sushi Bar provides a large selection of favorites, such as Teriyaki Chicken Club, Teriyaki chicken or salmon on a steamed bun with Thai basil mayo; or Albacore Onion with Japanese Ponzu sauce and baby tuna. The selection is endless. The Sushi Bar uses Super Ahi Tuna, Scottish Salmon, organic, less-salt soy sauce and premium short-grain

white or whole grain rice for its sushi.

In addition to fine afternoon and evening dining, this eatery also offers a delicious Sunday Brunch with some breakfast favorites and some uncommon choices for a breakfast brunch, guaranteed to make Chris Michael’s your new favorite place to spend a leisurely relaxing Sunday afternoon. Savor the sights and aromas of the most wonderful brunch ever. Stop in between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm to feast on an a la carte menu that offers such tempting goodies as a complimentary champagne Mimosa or a Bellini. Sweet entrees abound with selections such as Crepes, French Toast, Pancakes, Hot Porridge, and a scrumptious Morning Yogurt Parfait which offers Greek yogurt, honey and granola. Meats lovers will enjoy Pastrami Cured Smoked Salmon with cream cheese, and scrambled eggs. Also on tap is Tenderloin Benedict on an English muffin with Hollandaise sauce garnished with crab meat. You can also enjoy Steak and Eggs as well as a “Make Your Own Omelet.” If the alcoholic beverage isn›t your choice, try fresh-squeezed juices and organic teas. Whether you are looking a special venue for a date with that special someone, a family dinner, an afternoon appetizer while you watch the game or late night cocktails and conversation with friends, Chris Michael’s Steakhouse and Lounge is here to accommodate you, and make you feel as though you have crossed the river into New York City without paying a dime for the tolls.

Anyone who sees funktion 11 play is treated to a musical experience unlike anything else around. A highly diverse

and multi-talented group, its members have worked with some of the top artists in the world and use that knowledge and experience to create a unique sound. “Our music is the best of both worlds,” says percussionist and band leader Ronnie Nalven. “It brings you back to a time when percussion and horns were dominant, but with the words and the lyrics and the music of today.”

Band members add their own distinctive ele-ments to classic songs to give them a new twist, typically by adding their own horn line. “Even cover songs you’ve heard and known for years we do in a different way,” Nalven says, using Wild Cherry’s “Play That Funky Music.” (Check it out on the band’s website, funktion11.com.) “The music is so much more complex than the standard songs people would know, we put our spin on them and play them the way we like them.” It’s their four-piece horn section that allows them to add elements of jazz, R&B and funk into each one of their songs.

The idea to create the band came to Nalven in 2005 when he was playing with a Cherry Hill-based group that fell apart. funktion 11 took off in the beginning of 2007 “to try and play music to recapture some days of my youth

when horn bands were bigger then. Tower of Power, Chicago, Earth Wind and Fire, Cool and the Gang, that whole vibe,” Nalven explains.

Nalven is joined by vocalists Vanessa Perea and Tony Zeke, trumpeters Anja-Christin and Lee Hogans, saxophonist and flutist Andrew Gutauskas, trombonist Robert Edwards, gui-tarist Misha Fatkiev, bassist Charles “Chip” Moore, keyboardist Samar Newsome and drummer Kelvin King.

Nalven put the members of funktion 11 to-gether with a specific purpose and the wide range of ethnicities, cultures and backgrounds of the musicians involved with the group al-lows for them to appeal to mass audiences. Combined, they know English, Spanish, Rus-sian, Norwegian and Hebrew and they can per-form in Spanish just as fluently as in English. It’s their diversity that is one of the top selling points for a band whose members have im-pressive resumes.

With Nalven being the lone exception, every member of funktion 11 works in the music in-dustry full time. Hogans, who also serves as the musical director, is one of the top trumpet-ers in the country. He has a master’s degree in Jazz Performance from Rutgers University and has toured with Jay-Z, Sean Combs and Prince, though he’s not the only member to have worked with a world-famous musician. He re-cently performed with the Jonas Brothers on “The Today Show,” “Dancing With The Stars,” “Good Morning America” and “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.”

King has worked with Stevie Wonder and Glad-ys Knight to name just a few and Gutauskas has played with Michael Buble and Paul Simon, among others. Gutauskas also studied at Jul-liard as did Edwards and, like Hogans, Anja-Christin studied at Rutgers. Newsome is a product of the Westminster Conservatory of Music Offerings at Rider University and is cur-

rently teaching music with recordings avail-able on iTunes.

Every member of the band has other projects besides funktion 11 they work on which allows them to bring in new elements and sounds. Many members including Perea, Anja-Christin, Moore, King and Zeke started off singing and playing in church choirs, giving them the kind of soul typically reserved for those hallowed halls. Fatkiev has performed at many grand halls of his own including Carnegie Hall and was invited by Pandit Divyang Vakil, an Indian tabla guru, to perform at a music festival in his honor.

Aside from its live music, funktion 11 is work-ing on a CD of all original songs, tentatively ready by the end of the year. The band cur-rently has seven in its repertoire and is work-ing on getting to 10 before the members begin recording. “We think we’re on to something re-ally special,” Nalven opines. “It’s got a combi-nation of that older big horn sound, that sound from the 70s and 80s that’s disappeared, and it’s got more of the beats that people want in 2013.”

For more information on band members as well as audio samples and event dates, visit funktion11.com or follow them on Twitter: @function_11.

Jess Bilof21 SouthBY CLARE MARIE CELANO

Bartender Jessica Bilof has two priorities in life -- her family and her job, and she tends to both with passion and devotion.

The veteran bartender has worked in the restaurant industry for 18 years and would never dream of leaving it. “I couldn’t have a job where I have to sit down,” she says, admitting than an office job would never suit her high-energy personality. She prefers being on the move, working at a fast-paced job where she can meet interesting people. “And, I want to be in a place where I can make people feel at home,” she adds.

Jess intends to “stay in the business,” remarking that the industry has been good to her, allowing her to work a flexible schedule over the years. This was important to her as a single mom when her daughter Ariela, now 19, was young. “And, the money is good too,” she reveals. “After I worked my

first bartending job, I was hooked.”

Bartending holds just as much appeal today as it did years ago for Bilof by allowing her the time to hang out with mom, Pat, Ariela and Ariela’s eight-month old son, Jace. Babysitting

for her grandson is important to this new young grandmother, and she takes it seriously. “If I don’t get to see Jace at least once a week, I have a fit,” she laughs. “Having a grandchild is the greatest thing. It’s unconditional love.” Jess, Ariela, and Pat, spend a lot of time together, enjoying family pool parties and BBQ’s at Pat’s house. Spending time with her family is as satisfying to Bilof as serving her customers.

Currently, she tends bar at 21 South Bar and Grille, in Jackson, where she works the night shift which suits her just fine. She enjoys working the late shift because she is able to work when entertainment is offered, which she finds exciting. “I love working here and helping the business get established. I’ve watch its growth since we opened,” she relates of the sports bar, which launched in 2012 and which has grown significantly. Jess said she “makes a pretty mean” Long Island iced tea, as well as “killer’’ martinis and mojitos. And she adds, she loves meeting new people, so please come on down to 21 South Bar and Grille and say “Hi”.

As with so many things New Jersey is known for, rich and abundant golf courses are yet another thing for us to boast about. Our tightly packed state features hundreds of courses of all types, reflecting the growing popularity of this rather genteel sport. The number of men, women and children taking up the club continues to grow. Golf is

perhaps the only sport that effectively combines social play with individual challenge (beating your own best). And of course, fresh air and lushly landscaped surroundings only serve to enhance the overall experience.

By the way, this is by no means an “official” Top 10 list, it’s an amalgamation of suggestions from you, our readers, and our staff.

1. AtlAntic city country club (Northfield, caesars.com/golf/atlantic-city-country-club): The Atlantic City area has so much more than simply the casinos. Try something different, spend a day at this beautiful course and

complex. It is rated one of the top 50 19th holes in Golf by Golf Digest. As one of America’s oldest and most prestigious golf clubs, Atlantic City Country Club has been home to many firsts, including being the “birthplace of the birdie.” The course has a bayside setting reminiscent

of the historic links in Scotland and Ireland. The country club also features the Tap Room Bar & Grille -- breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as late-night fare. Happy hour specials feature $5 wine and martinis, and half-price drafts. Check out entertainment by Mike Lunemann all summer long on the expansive back patio overlooking the beautiful views of the AC Skyline.

2. neshAnic VAlley Golf course (Neshanic Stations, neshanicvalleygolf.com) Neshanic Valley Golf Course is the flagship facility of the five-course Somerset County Park Commission system. The 27-hole Championship Course, the 9-hole Academy Course, the Learning Center, and the Callaway Golf Performance Center were designed to accommodate golfers of all abilities. The challenging par 32 nine-hole Academy Course plays from 1, 420 yards to 2,019 yards and offers three tees on each hole, with five par four holes and four par threes. Merri-Makers operates the exquisite food and beverage offerings here, including a majestic on-grounds tent that can accommodate up to 500 guests for outdoor ceremonies; as well as a banquet room overlooking the bucolic surroundings and has an adjacent outdoor deck.

3. Architects Golf club (Hopatcong, thearchitectsclub.com) The Architects Golf Club is a 6863-yard par 71 course that holds a stellar reputation among the golf industry and has been recognized by such prestigious publications as Golf Course News, Golf Magazine, Links Magazine, Golf Digest and Sports Illustrated. Its Thyme Restaurant and Bar is located within the clubhouse, offering

a fresh and classic dining experience in a venue highlighted by a soaring ceiling,

majestic fireplace, and outdoor terrace. Complement your meal with a bottle of wine from its extensive wine list or enjoy a specialty cocktail. You can enjoy all your favorite sporting events on the many flat-screen televisions inside the 16,000-square-foot clubhouse that also features a ballroom. Outdoors, golfers can enjoy the 6,000-square-foot bluestone patio for dining and tented events.

4. bAllAmor Golf club (Little Egg Harbor, ballamor.com) Now open for the public as a daily fee course and grounds, Ballamor was named the 4th best public course in the state of New Jersey by Golf magazine. Designed by

renowned architects Ault, Clark & Associates, the course blends traditional architecture with modern nuances that captures the distinct beauty of the property. Each hole possesses its own individual character with a total package that tests every type of golf shot. The Pub and Grill at Ballamor -- open daily to the public -- features a delicious menu of sandwiches, Certified Angus Beef burgers, appetizers, soups and salads and an extensive array of Chef’s specialties. The Pub & Grill also offers a wide selection of draft domestic beers as well as fine wines and mixed drinks.

A Review

Most New Yorkers would hesitate to don the dazzling footwear displayed in the new Broadway musical Kinky Boots. When you live in a city of potholes, sloping sidewalks, and perilous subway stairs, the six-inch stiletto is not your friend. Yet audiences have heartily embraced this middling production at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, which features pop icon Cyndi Lauper as composer and lyricist. Based on a 2005 indie film (itself derived from a true story of small-business gumption, Kinky Boots tells how a failing firm reinvents itself as a manufacturer of fetishwear for the cross-dressed gent.

As the show begins, Charlie Price (the plucky Stark Sands) has ditched his backwater roots for London lights, but his father’s death lures him back to struggling the Price & Son factory, rendered, in David Rockwell’s set design as a slightly grimy Santa’s workshop. Cancelled orders and cheaper imports nearly convince Charlie to close when an encounter with drag queen Lola (the hard-charging Billy Porter) changes his fiscal

fate. “There must be a niche market for properly built-to-last women’s boots for women who are men,” Charlie declares. Lola signs on as designer and soon songs are sung, lessons learned, and thigh-high patent leather donned.

For a musical with such racy themes, it would be difficult to picture a more conservative, family-friendly show. The book is by Harvey Fierstein and it is about as provocative and challenging as a soft toy. Yes, drag queens abound on stage, but as Lola says: “Drag queens are mainstream. Just this morning I was offered a gig singing at a nursing home. A nursing home, Charlie!. In Claxton.” Despite a few bustiers and songs entitled Sex Is in the Heel and What a Woman Wants, this is an oddly chaste show. The only clinch occurs in the last moment and is strictly gender conforming. The script doesn’t even permit Lola to evince an attraction to anyone.

We can credit costume designer Gregg Barnes with the boots – they really are luscious. But similar originality evades most of the songs, which, though tuneful enough, fade from the mind as soon as the last note has sounded. A few exceptions are The History of Wrong Guys, a clever girl/dumb choices number milked gleefully by Annaleigh Ashford, and I’m Not My Father’s Son, a duet for Sands and Porter. Most of the others, even those that promise well, ultimately come across as generic, accomplishing little in terms of revealing character or driving plot. Certainly there’s nothing to rival the poignancy of Time After Time, or even the daffy joy of She Bop. Still, Broadway audiences just wanna have fun, and if it means giving a standing O to an uneven book and score, they’ll do it.

Chris Covertby Steve Ortlieb

This month I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing a Jersey Shore original. Chris Covert is a local boy gone good (bad?) and

as a standup comic he’s performed far and wide. This quote, directly from Chris’ website, sets the tone: “I found school to be fodder for material.  This

of course was not smiled upon by my educators and often resulted in detention or worse.  Detention, or 8th period as I called it, was a time to sit, be quiet, miss your bus and write your material.  So in effect – the school board helped me refine my act.”

Chris also is the owner of Elsie’s Sub Shop in Red Bank. A quick perusal of Yelp will show that jokes are not his only specialty.

Were you “the funny one” growing up? I mean not just in school but at home with parents and siblings? Class clown?Yes.  My father always had a great sense of humor, my mother did as well. But it was the wit and encouragement of my Aunt Sue, who would laugh at everything I did, that made me try hard to be funny.  I truly have a whole family of goofballs!  I treated the role of class clown as if I were getting graded on it.  The things I got away with then would have kids arrested today.  My mother is a saint for what she put up with. But she knew I was “wired” differently.

Along those lines, did you do all the school productions? Where’d you grow up? Or rather, if you’re anything like me, where were you raised? I was president of the Drama Club my senior year but had little to do with it other than that.  I was raised in Belford then moved to Middletown my freshman year.  I was 15 when I did my first comedy show.

Stand up is very tough. You have to be able to take rejection. How’d you handle your first bomb, unless you’re the one comic who’s never experienced that?

I’ve had rough nights like anybody else.  As an outspoken life-long class clown you take some beatings throughout your life when you don’t conform to normality, so that alone will toughen you up.  The trick to comedy is not just getting back up and doing it again but learning where and why you failed.  Far too many comics blame the room -- and there are circumstances where that may be applicable -- but at the end of the day it’s your job to be funny.

Is this a means to an end? SNL, sitcoms, head writer--what’s your ultimate comedy goal, if there is one? Wherever it takes me.  Uncle Miltie (Milton Berle) said, “If opportunity doesn›t knock, build a door.»  I›m building doors.

Do you have “a day job” or does this pay the bills? My better half and I own Elsie’s Submarines in Red Bank.  That pays the bills.  Most of whatever I make in comedy goes to the next show, for things like better equipment, website and promotions. It’s not full time yet but I have at least one paying gig a week.

Chris’ website, JerseyJokers.com will give you a better insight into his mania as well as future performance dates. And just because he’s such a good guy, here’s a plug for his restaurant too, yelp.com/biz/elsies-sub-shop-red-bank.

Comic Relief

Sadly, Selena Coppack’s aBostonian and doesn’t understand that the only real teams to root for are in NY and NJ. I jest of course (kinda, sorta). Coppack has been performing stand up for eight years and her new book, The New Rules For Blondes, launches in April.

Were you “the funny one” growing up?

I come from a very funny home and my older sister Laurel is a comedian, too. So I wasn’t really ‘the funny one’ at home so much as Laurel and I spent a lot of time writing musicals in our bedrooms, choreographing strange dance numbers, and watching “Saturday Night Live” since age 7. I think that my parents and oldest sister Emily are super hilarious, too. But yes, I’ve always been a bit of a ham and really interested in comedy and performing.

Along those lines, did you do all the school productions? Where’d you grow up? Or rather, if you’re anything like me, where were you raised?

I grew up outside of Boston and I did all of the school plays growing up -- I absolutely loved performing and the excitement of rehearsing and being in shows. I did some professional theater in Boston (at the Boston Baked Theater--now gone) and in high school I became interested in singing, too. I went to college in upstate NY where I majored in English and didn’t do any of the plays on campus; but I was in the only co-ed a cappella group on campus (the Hamilton College Hamiltones) and the improv troupe. After school I moved to Chicago

to study improv comedy further and it was improv that really led me to standup. I did improv for years and eventually I just got sick of working with other people, which makes me sound like a total curmudgeon, I know.

Stand up is very tough. You have to be able to take rejection. How’d you handle your first bomb, unless you’re the one comic who’s never experienced that?

The rejection is definitely hard and it’s something that everyone -- even my comedy idols -- have experienced at some point. Early on I think that I wanted the audience to like me, which can be dangerous territory, especially for female comedians. You have to be confident and feel entitled to be up there with the microphone and that took me a while to figure out -- how to just own the stage and trust myself more. I think of standup as like training a dog -- if you get out there and you’re confident and in control, the audience is with you. But if you exude a sense of nervousness or you seem insecure, they’ll eat you alive. I’ve been doing standup for about eight years and even now sometimes I’ll have a show where I can sense that certain people in the audience aren’t completely on board with me and it makes me feel nervous, but I know to just plow through it and keep on going and eventually I’ll hit on a joke or reference that wins them over.

Is this a means to an end? “SNL”, sitcoms, head writer--what’s your goal?

I definitely don’t think of standup as a means to an end and I think that comedians who do are pretty miserable people. It has to be its own reward or else you’re crazy to do this thing. But as far as my goal, mine is pretty broad: I’d like for my comedy (performance, writing) to pay for my life. I don’t know exactly how that will shake out, but I’d like my job to be what I love to do, which is write and perform comedy. I have a book coming out in April (The New Rules for Blondes, from It Books/HarperCollins), which I hope will open up new opportunities for me. It’s a collection of humorous essays celebrating and subverting the blonde stereotype, but it’s for readers of all hair colors.

COMMONWEALTHShared sovereignty between states

and federal government; unified for acommon purpose.

For the purposes of government and politics, the word was used when our country was being formed back in the 1700s. Five states used the original designation “commonwealth” when establishing themselves. Today, four states still refer to themselves using the title: Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Kentucky. (Delaware changed its designation.)

The recent tragic events that took place in Boston last month and the quick and immediate actions taken by its citizens, first responders and residents, reminded me of the second part of theWord’s definition: “unified for a common purpose.” Yes, Massachusetts is indeed a commonwealth and, indeed, its people pulled together for a common purpose.

People helped people, without question and without hesitation. Everyone pitched in to help law enforcement (state and federal) to identify and find the bombers. Everyone worked together. The residents of Boston were put in virtual lockdown for over 24 hours. No one protested. Everyone cooperated and, within 4 ½ days, the “terrorists” were killed and captured.

Pausing to revisit this event and the actions taken by all involved, I stop to reflect on how great this country is and could continue to be if we all “united for a common purpose” in our daily lives and in our daily work habits. Think about it!
