Gibsons Public MarketAdjacent to the Gibsons Marina on the southernmost tip of the picturesque Sunshine Coast in the traditional territory of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation), Gibsons Public Market is a vibrant community hub home to seven local businesses, an award-winning bistro and a one-of-a kind collect-and-release community aquarium - the Nicholas Sonntag Marine Education Centre. Both the public market and the public aquarium are operated by Gibsons Community Building Society. The Society and its three partners - the Town of Gibsons, Community Futures Sunshine Coast and the Sunshine Coast Community Foundation - form an innovative partnership in the ownership of the property.

Nicholas Sonntag Marine Education Centre The Sunshine Coast’s only collect-and-release community aquarium, the Nicholas Sonntag Marine Education Centre features 30 live animal exhibits showcasing the biodiversity of Howe Sound and the Salish Sea. Frequently Asked Questions

DO I NEED INSURANCE FOR MY EVENT?

Gibsons Community Building Society (operators of Gibsons Public Market) holds limited liability insurance, and is not liable for accident or injury that may occur during a private rental. The Society recommends but does not require private rental groups to hold additional insurance, especially for events where alcohol is being served. Ultimately the choice lies with the event hosts.

MAY WE SUPPLY OUR OWN FOOD AND BEVERAGES DURING OUR EVENT?

No. Events at Gibsons Public Market are catered exclusively by our in-house caterer, Emelle’s Market Bistro. All arrangements regarding food and beverages need to be made directly with Emelle’s staff. Emelle’s is fully licensed.

IS ON-SITE PARKING AVAILABLE?

Yes! There are 50 on-site complimentary stalls and additional parking throughout the surrounding neighbourhood. Parking is always on a first-come, first-served basis. During regular market hours (10am - 6pm, Tuesday thru Sunday), the parking lot may be relatively full.

HOW LATE CAN OUR EVENT GO?

There is no mandated end-time for events. Sound levels must be controlled such that after 11pm our residential neighbours are not disturbed. Additionally, guests should limit any socializing in the parking lot after this time. Gibsons Public Market staff will work with you to manage sound and noise accordingly.

DO WE NEED TO HIRE AN EVENT PLANNER?

For weddings and larger events, event planners are recommended but not required. Event planning and coordinating services are not included in standard rental rates. Please speak with Gibsons Public Market staff should you require additional coordination services with your booking.

DO YOU HAVE A L IST OF PREFERRED VENDORS? AM I REQUIRED TO WORK WITH ANY OF THEM?

Gibsons Public Market is home to seven local businesses ready to make your event a success. We also have a network of community partners who we can recommend. Please ask staff for more information.

Emelle’s Market Bistro is our only exclusive partner. There are no other requirements to work with our preferred vendors.

DO YOU ALLOW BANDS OR DJS TO PLAY PRIVATE EVENTS?

Yes! We love live music and encourage you to discuss your plans with staff in advance to be sure it will work in the space.

IS SMOKING ALLOWED?

Smoking is not permitted in the building nor on the patio. Any outdoor smoking must respect provincial regulations (no smoking within 6-meter radius of doors, open windows and air intakes).

ARE THERE ANY DECOR RESTRICTIONS?

Decor plans should be discussed with staff. The general rule is most decor can be accommodated so long as no permanent damage is done to the building. Rental groups are responsible for all decorating and its removal.

DO YOU OFFER DISCOUNTED RATES FOR NON-PROFIT GROUPS?

All groups in need of financial support to rent any of our venues are encouraged to apply to the Placemaking Bursary. More information is available online at www.gibsonspublicmarket.com.

ARE WE REQUIRED TO SET-UP OR STRIKE OUR EVENT?

This depends which room and rate you’ve chosen. Set-up and strike services are included with all Atrium bookings, Marine Education Centre bookings, and all Full Service bookings in the Coastal Room.

If you are booking the Coastal Room at the Just the Basics or Full Access rate, your rental group is responsible for both set-up and strike. Booking times will be inclusive of set-up and strike times. For example, if your event runs from 6pm - 9pm, your booking time will actually be 5pm or 5:30pm - 9:30pm or 10pm to allow time for set-up and strike activities. Staff can advise how much time you will need for set-up and strike.

If you are booking either kitchen facility you are responsible for set-up and clean up.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE SECURITY AND DAMAGE DEPOSIT? ARE EITHER REFUNDABLE IN THE EVENT OF A CANCELLATION?

The security deposit is 50% of your rental fee and its purpose is to secure the venue exclusively for your use on your booking date. In the event of a cancellation, the security deposit is refundable until 30 days prior to the event; after this point it is non-refundable.

The damage deposit is $250 and is held in the event there is any damage caused by your activities in the building. If there is deemed to be no damage at the end of your event, the damage deposit will be returned in full. In the event of a cancellation, the damage deposit is always refundable.

WHAT KIND OF WI-FI DOES YOUR FACILITY HAVE?

The entire public market building is powered by TELUS high-speed fibre optic Wi-Fi, capable of running multiple HD video streams on separate devices simultaneously (>40 mbps download speed).

WHAT KIND OF STORAGE SPACE DOES THE PUBLIC MARKET OFFER?

We do not offer on-site storage for event supplies in any venue (including kitchens). Commercial Kitchen renters have access to the fridge and freezer for the duration of their rental, but must remove all product at the end of the rental period.

Weddings are the only exception and have very limited term (<16 hours) access to the facility to store supplies.
