Where Where
Venice is a city towards the north of Italy, that stretches to 117 little islands which are found in the Adriatic Sea that surrounds Italy. The Adriatic Sea pushes large waves near the outskirts of Venice, forcing the city to become a “floating city”, and the people to travel around in special boats called Gondolas.

Food Food Fish and vegetables are Venice’s speciality,
but only while they are in season. Restaurants in Venice serve small savoury dishes as starters for big meals. These dishes include: fried crab claws, meat balls, small octopus, fried vegetables, and
sardines cooked in
vinegar and onions.

The “Carnevale” The “Carnevale”Every year the people of Venice have a “Carnevale”.
This Carnevale happens a few weeks before Easter, and lasts for ten days. It celebrates the
Venetian’s past and their present.
The Carnevale includes a giant display
of fireworks over the Grand Canal, and
many dances, some of which are located in the Doge palace. The people dress up in 18th century clothes and masks, disguising themselves, so that they are unrecognisable. There are also theatrical performances to celebrate the Carnevale.

Venice’s Symbol Venice’s Symbol Venice’s Symbol is the winged lion. Venice
claimed this symbol as their own when Mark the apostle’s remains were transported from his tomb to Venice in 828 AD. Venice’s Symbol has been painted into many famous Venetian artworks and for many years. The winged lion usually has it’s paw on a book in the symbol, and inscribed on that book are some words in Latin, which mean: “Peace be upon you,
o’ Mark, my apostle.”
