PASTOR’S CORNER 1 1 PASTOR’S CORNER 1

I love stories. One of my favor-ites is the story of Puccini. The composer of such operas as La Bo-heme, Tosca, Madame Bu erfly and Turandot. Towards the end of his life, he was suffering from can-cer. His family and students plead-ed with him to stop wri ng his final opera, Turandot, but he persisted. One day he got extremely sick and was rushed to the hospital. He died during surgery. A er his fu-neral his students examined what he had composed and decided to finish the opera. Turandot opened in La Scala, Milan. It was well re-ceived but then Toscanini, Puccini’s favorite student and the conductor of the opera stopped everything and turned to the audience and said : “Thus far the master wrote.” Silence. Then he turned to the au-dience and said “but the disciples finished the work.” We can echo these words as we celebrate Pentecost. Thus far the Master (Jesus) wrote but the disci-ples (the apostles and now us) are called to finish the work. On the evening of the first day of the week when the doors were locked. (JN20:19) Pentecost is the feast of locked doors that are sud-denly blown open. It is the feast of isola on from suspicion, abandonment and near despair—all dismissed by a resur-rected Jesus whose first spoken words are. “Peace be with you.” To our surprise, the Spirit of sec-ond chances breaks down the door

and with a love so vast guilt and humilia on are wiped away. The Spirit comes like a great wind and fills each of them with a sense of peace so profound that the door of their souls fly open and a smoldering fire lights their hearts. Then Jesus, chooses them to be the wounded forgiven healers that preach the message of God’s love and mercy. Pentecost is the feast of chal-lenge. Where are the locked doors of our lives? Where do we find ourselves isolated in fear, living behind emo onal sealed doors, hanging on to anger and refusing to come out of hiding? Pentecost is not just something miraculous and stupendous that happened 2000 years ago. It is an event that needs to happen in each of our lives—NOW. In his book, Naked and you Clothed Me, Fr. William Bausch tell the story of a 41 year old man named Tom who was dying of AIDS. His parents living in so much shame because of this that they literally locked him in an upstairs bedroom so that no one could see him. The priest then tells how when he was finally allowed to see him , he bent over to kiss Tom on the forehead and then he took his hand in his own. The emaciated, bedridden man whispered to the Priest with tears streaming down his face. “No one touches me anymore…” His father

remained behind the closed door un l Tom died. At the wake he fi-nally broke down and opened the closed door of his heart and wept shame over his neglect and aban-donment. LOCKED DOORS WERE BLOWN OPEN Pentecost promises us that the Holy Spirit can be released in each of us: • The Spirit of fire that can burn

away our meanness. • The Spirit of wind that can

sweep away our desire for re-venge.

• The Spirit of blown open doors that can usher us into inner peace that can transform our hearts of hate.

When we greet each other with peace today, we are challenged to remember the meaning Jesus gave that word, “The Peace of Christ be with you,” is a gree ng of sinner to sinner, Chris an to Chris an as for-given forgivers. It is a blessing that called us to humility and generosity in equal measure. It is a blessing that we can only make real in com-munites enlivened by the breath of the Spirit. It is for those reason that we pray together as a Pentecost Com-munity: “Come Holy Spirit, fill the hears of the faithful, and enkindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit, and we shall re-new the face of the earth.”

Pentecost Sunday

See the Holy Spirit In the readings on Pentecost Sunday, the Spirit is described as a driving wind and tongues of fire. Knowing that the Holy Spirit is a Person of the Trinity, we seem to be able to picture the Spirit only in terms of what the Spirit does. In our second reading, Paul tries to explain just that. First, Paul says that we cannot know Jesus as Lord without the Spirit. The Spirit is the way Jesus is present today, so anyone who truly believes in Jesus is guided by the Spirit. Sec-ond, he acknowledges that the Spirit works in many ways. As examples, Paul men ons there are many different gi s and services in the church. He emphasizes that all these differences come from one and the same God. When we think of the strength of the Church, we usually think of its unity, i.e., one bap sm, one faith, one Lord. But we also draw strength from the diversity of gi s and services that people offer to God. So look at the gi s of those around you, and you may be able to see the Holy Spirit more clearly. 4 YOUTH MINISTRY SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN Did you know? Hot cars can mean serious danger for kids It is rarely done inten onally, but in a ma er of minutes, children le in hot cars can suffer greatly. Car temperatures rise quickly, leaving children suscep ble to heat stroke, seizures, and even death. Tempera-ture in a car can rise 30 to 40 degrees in just a half an hour. Consider installing a safety mirror in the back of your car to help keep an eye on children, and never leave them alone in the car, even for a few minutes. Next weekend all parishes throughout the Archdi-ocese of Los Angeles will be asked to give gener-ously to support the Re rement Fund for Archdi-ocesan Priests. At each Mass , a collec on will be taken to benefit this important program. Currently, the fund provides for more than 100 priests who are re red. Over the next ten years, that number is expected to increase significantly. With minimal compensa on, and in many cases, no pension, these men o en re re with nothing to fall back upon. Your contribu ons can change that. The Priest Re rement Fund offers us a way to give back to our priests who have served us so faithful-ly. Your contribu on will help archdiocesan priests live modestly and peacefully in re rement. Help us offer thanks for their years of devo on to God, and faithful service to our parish communi-
