Not just for Sporty Types
Let’s face it: Some of us are not as slim as Handsome here Some of us folks are:
Old, wide, winded, and slow Not every pedal pusher needs or wants a
sports model What about weather? What about a cargo load?

Carcycle
X-4 was built with minimum investment Test general configuration and proportions. Make it as car-like and convenient as possible
Goals of overall packaging were: Room for an adult, child and 2 grocery bags Narrow enough to go through a standard door Tall enough for confidence in heavy traffic Keep the shape streamlined

Carcycle
Car-Cycle X-4 Built as an experimental prototype in 1986-87. In '88 it won two second places and one third place in
the IHPVA Practical Vehicle Championships in Visalia, California.
In '96 it won that event outright in Las Vegas. ESPN show on the IHPVA Championships in '88
Devoted five minutes to the Car-Cycle: the BMW of human powered vehicles.
Also featured in a two-page spread in Bicycling Magazine in April '93.
None of the coverage led to a partnership with an established manufacturer or major investor.

Why Shaft Drive Bikes Are Better www.dynamicbicycles.com/info/top10.php
www.dynamicbicycles.com/chainless/gearing.php
1. Smarter Gearing Chainless bikes provide incredible gear range without greasy sprockets, chains and derailleurs.
2. Less Maintenance The Shimano Nexus hubs are designed for low maintenance. Reduced frequency of tune-ups and repairs compared to chain-
derailleur bikes.
3. Safer All moving parts are fully enclosed. Won’t tear clothes or cause injuries as sharp-toothed sprockets, moving chains and derailleurs
often do.
4. More Durable Fully enclosed shaft drive system protects gears and shaft drive protected from weather and crash damage.
5. Cleaner No grease to end up on your hands and clothes. More elegant to ride with any type of clothing.
6. Always in the Right Gear and 7. Faster Gear Transition Shifting is independent of pedaling. You do not need to be pedaling to change gears. Can switch gears at any time – even at a complete stop – making it easy to always start in the best gear for the terrain.
Grip shift gear indicator that displays what gear you are in at all times; no more looking down at your gears to see where the chain is.
Wide gear spectrum and quick response grip shift mean fewer gear changes to keep you in an optimal gear on any terrain.
8. Easier to Transport Without greasy chain, sharp sprockets or delicate derailleurs, it is easier to load on and off vehicles for transport. No more stains, grease, cuts or scrapes just trying to load or unload vehicle on trailer/bus/train platform.
9. Looks Great Streamlined look with no loss of performance.
10. Quieter and More Consistent Shaft drive bikes eliminate derailleur and chain noises for a smooth, quiet ride. Easy and smooth to pedal Deliver more consistent results from each pedal turn.
With a constant 94% efficiency, our shaft drive bikes perform more consistently Chain and derailleur bikes range in efficiency from 75% for poorly tuned systems up to 97% for perfectly tuned systems.

Heinzmann Hub
All Heinzmann motors Built to the same basic plan Come in two versions
For front wheel fitting For rear wheel fitting
The motor is spoked directly into the rim Can be fitted to any size from 16 to 28. Two voltage versions (24V or 36V) Five main power bands (200/250W, 500/750W, 800W, 900W).
Why is the Heinzmann motor so good? The Magnets: The Coils: The Bearings: The Gears
The Castings: Although it’s bigger than a standard hub, there’s no superfluous metal in the Heinzmann
hub - everything is machined down to save weight without sacrificing strength. I’ve never seen a broken one (apart from one the couriers drove a truck over!).
The Thermistor: This is the bit almost all other systems miss out! The Heinzmann motor has a built-in
thermistor which keeps an eye on the motor temperature - see the Power System page for more info on the Heinzmann’s safety systems.
http://www.kinetics.org.uk/html/the_motor.shtml
![Page 44: Velorution!](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022011717/568167dd550346895ddd39f2/html5/thumbnails/44.jpg)

Heinzmann Hub Details The Magnets:
Magnets in a motor are 1/2 of the torque-producing system Produce the magnetic field which the coils act against. The strongest field, best quality rare-earth magnets, for the highest possible magnetic flux
density.
The Coils: Coils are the other half of the system - and the trickiest bit! The trick is to fit as many coils in as possible. Heinzmann’s coil designs are very sophisticated
(and very secret!) A lot more power than all the textbooks say is possible - up to 3 horsepower in some motors!
The Bearings: The bearing which a motor and gearbox run on are vital - they are going to get a lot of abuse
and no maintenance! Heinzmann only use genuine SKF sealed bearings, not cheaper far-eastern imitations
The Gears: The gears are the only real wearing parts in a motor and gearbox, so they have to be good.
Heinzmann’s are made out of hardened steel, with a helical tooth pattern to reduce wear. I have NEVER seen a worn out set of steel Heinzmann gears!
In the lower-power motors, Heinzmann make the intermediate cog out of tough nylon to reduce noise - even these last three years or more of daily use. As a comparison, I once took a set of steel gears out of a Schachner motor which had been used for just 3 months - they were already worn almost completely away.

Theft - A Major Deterrent to Cycling
Bicycle theft is one of the most daunting difficulties confronting New York City bicyclists. Countless cyclists have “retired” from bicycling after losing their first — or third or sixth — bicycle to street theft.
Bicycles are lightweight, simple to operate and inherently mobile — hence, easy to steal. With an abundance of eager buyers (many of whom are themselves victims of bicycle theft), and with little intervention by the police, a market for stolen bikes and bike parts thrives in New York City.
Long-term cycling in New York City seems to promise eventual loss of one's bike. In the 1992 City Cyclist survey, the 839 respondents reported a total of 860 bicycles stolen in New York City, an average of 1.03 thefts per cyclist.
During the 1980s, an average of 8,300 bicycles were reported stolen to the New York City Police Department each year. [1] By all accounts, the actual rate of bike thefts in New York is far higher.
In the City Cyclist survey, theft victims reported their stolen bikes to the police only one-quarter of the time. This may overstate the extent of theft reporting, since survey respondents are probably more likely to go to the police than the average cyclist.
One bike store owner who is also a long-time cycling activist has inferred from conversations with thousands of customers that only 1 in 10 bike thefts in New York City is reported.
Even assuming the true reporting rate is 1 in 5, and assigning a $250 value per bike, the implied 40,000-45,000 bike thefts per year are costing their owners around $10 million annually.

Thefts, misuse scuttle Paris bikes Over half the self- service rental bicycles in Paris have been stolen just 18 months after its successful launch. Since the scheme's launch, nearly all the original bicycles have been replaced at a cost of 400 euros ($519, £351) each. They have been used 42 million times since their introduction but vandalism and theft are taking their toll. The company which runs the scheme, JCDecaux, says it can no longer afford to operate the city-wide network. Championed by Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoe, the bikes were part of an attempt to "green" the capital. Parisians took to them enthusiastically.
But the bikes have suffered more than anticipated, company officials have said. Damages include: Dumped in the River Seine; Torched and broken into pieces; Hung from lamp posts
Some bikes have turned up in eastern Europe and Africa, according to press reports.
The Velib bikes - the name is a contraction of velo (cycle) and liberte (freedom) - have also fallen victim to a craze known as "velib extreme".
Various videos have appeared on YouTube showing riders taking the bikes down the steps in Montmartre, into metro stations and being tested on BMX courses.
Remi Pheulpin, JCDecaux's director general, says the current contract is unsustainable. "It's simple. All the receipts go to the city. All the expenses are ours," he said.
The costs, he said, were "so high that a private business cannot handle it alone, espcially as it's a problem of public order. If we want the velib set-up to keep going, we'll have to change the business model," he told Le Parisien newspaper.
The original contract gave the advertising company a 10-year licence to exploit 1,600 city-wide billboards in return for running the scheme, plus a share in the revenue, estimated at 20m euros for the first year of operation.
City hall has recently agreed to pay towards the costs of replacing the stolen or trashed bicycles but is refusing to bail out the company.
Not all the bicycles receive rough treatment however. One velib repairman reported finding one of the bikes customised with fur covered tyres.
The scheme was modelled on one in Lyon Which appears to have been less troublesome, and has been extended to other cities in France. It is also being copied overseas with London, San Francisco and Singapore all intending to set up similar schemes.

Green Jobs with Green-Goers
Way back in the day, the milkman, baker, and butcher made regular deliveries door-to-door, and even the greengrocer would do a run twice a week, in a flatbed truck laden with fruit and vegetables.
Older people protested against the claimed 'convenience' of the new self-service supermarkets that opened after WWII.
If Grandma wanted a spool of cotton, she could just ring the draper and he would deliver it on his evening run. And she could leave her list with the grocer and he would drop off her groceries on his evening run.
By the early seventies, there were no drapers as such, and no grocers that did deliveries
And supermarkets got rid of all the tradesmen that delivered to your door in no time at all.
So whose time was being saved?
With a fleet of Green-Go GoodQuads, home delivery could be a thing of the future, not the past.
