Velan is the world's leading manufacturer of steel gate, globe, check, ball, knife and butterfly valves, 8–1500 mm ( 1⁄4–60”),ASME Classes 150–4500, with 12 specialized manufacturingplants, including five in Canada, two in Korea and one each inthe U.S., France, U.K., Portugal, and Taiwan. We have a total of1,090 employees in North America, and 385 overseas.
In 1985, we successfully introduced on the market an advanced, high performance line of competitive industrial ball valves, withpatented resilient and metal seats in sizes 8–600 mm (1⁄4–24”),and ASME pressure Classes 150–4500. This catalog covers anew line of split body ball valves 15–300 mm (1⁄2 –12”) to BS 5351.
Velan ball valves have shown outstanding performance incritical applications in the chemical, oil, gas, petrochemical, pulp and paper, cryogenics and other industries.
Unique machinery, equipment and systems, especiallyengineered to meet the specific requirements of advancedvalve manufacturing technology, are used in all plants, allowingus to offer outstanding quality at highly competitive prices.

VELAN MEMORY SEAL BALL VALVE TECHNOLOGY

SEALING MEMORYThe Velan sealing memory is induced into the seatsduring the assembly process. When the ball isinserted into the valve body during assembly, itpartially flattens the seat, creating a tensile stress inthe center of the seat. As a result, the seat core increases in diameter fromD1 to D2 and like a stretched elastic band pushesagainst the ball. This ensures reliable sealing evenat vacuum or low pressures.
SEAT STRENGTHA seat in tension is stronger than a seat incompression because the tensile strength of PTFE intension is 3600 psi versus only 1800 psi for PTFE in compression. Greater strength means less fatigue, superior sealing ability and longer cycle life.
CAVITY PRESSURE RELIEFMemory seal seats are designed to relieveoverpressure in the ball/body cavity. This capabilityis influenced by many variables including: fluidcharacteristics, variations in pressure, seatmaterials, seat compression, temperature andthermal cycles.
Positive release of cavity overpressure to theupstream side is assured in bypassing the upstreamseat through a drilled hole in the ball. This option ispreferred in certain services such as liquid chlorine.
Pressure relief when the valve is in the openposition is always through the vent in the top of theball adjacent to the stem connection.

SUMMARY OF MEMORYSEAL BENEFITS
 SEATS ”IN-TENSION“
- Greater strength
- Less fatigue
- Positive bi-directional shutoff
- Compensate for temperature fluctuations
- Uniform torque
- High cycle life
- Eliminate cold flow effects
 LARGER SEATING AREA
- Superior sealing
LOWER TORQUESVelan “in-tension” seats produce more uniformtorque because the seat deflects into the cavitybehind it to accommodate slight differences inmachining tolerances or the normal expansion ofPTFE as temperature increases. PTFE expandsapproximately seven times as much as metal.

4. Stem thrust washer
prevents galling, reducesoperating torque andprovides a secondarystem seal.
5. Blowout-proof.
The internally-backseatedstem provides blowout-proof safety.
6. Antistatic devices.
Ball-to-stem and stem-to-body staticgrounding as standard toBS 5351 .
A UNIQUE PACKING CHAMBER TESTED FOR 0 PPM EMISSIONSWITH A FULLY GUIDED STEM AND FLANGED PACKING GLAND
ALTERNATIVE STEM & PACKING CHAMBER DESIGNS
Live-loaded flanged gland for long cycle life
1. Fully-guided stem.
Stem bearings in body and in the gland followerprevent wobbling andpacking leakage due to side thrust on stem.
2. Two piece flanged
gland design.
To assure low fugitiveemissions is standard.
3. Low emission stem seal.
Precompressed (2000 psi)solid PTFE packing rings, a two-piece flanged glandand fine finish of stem and I.D. of packing chamber provides 0-20 ppm tightness for low emissions.
TA-LUFT QUALIFICATIONThe certificate issued by RWTUV after testing Velanmemory ball valves states “We herewith certify theequivalence of shaft sealing for Velan ball valveswith a fully guided shaft and live-loaded flangedpacking gland to stem sealing with bellows seal andadditional safety packing”. This is based upon therequirements described in TA-Luft, Section 3.1.8.4.
LOW FUGITIVE EMISSIONS
Based on extensive laboratory tests and field
experience, Velan guarantees the customer
that standard Velan ball valves will provide
low emission service, on gaskets, and stem
seals, under normal operating conditions,
provided that gland and body-bonnet bolting is
torqued to minimum values shown in the
current Velan maintenance manuals.
Maximum emissions on new valves:
20 ppm – PTFE packing rings and 100 ppm
graphite packing rings.

VELAN BALL VALVE API 607 REVISION 4
An extensive range of Velan’s resilient seated ball valves have been tested to and successfully passedBS6755 and API 607 Revision 4 test including our split-body, unibody, top-entry and end-entry designs. This now allows valve users to select Velan ball valves for a wide variety in installations with the latest inFire Safe technology. The following shows the procedure and equipment used in the fire testing of theVelan ball valves in accordance with API 607 Revision 4.
SEQUENCE OF EVENTS
FIRE TEST IN PROGRESS
A valve was picked for testing at random.1
Hydrotestedto API 598standard.
2
5
Valve mountedon the fire test rig in closed position with thermocouples located as required.
3
Valve is exposed to 1400–1800°F for 30 minutes.4
Simulated fire fighting. Rapidwater quenching lowers the valvetemperature to below 212°F.
5
Valve is cycled (open and closed) and pressure tested at30 psig. Average leakage rate is calculated based on a 5-minutemeasurement period.
6
While the valve isexposed to the fire, theleakage is not allowed toexceed the rate specifiedin API 607 Revision 4standards.

APPLICATIONS:These rugged, versatile, high performance ball valvesmeet all requirements for oil and gas pipeline serviceand, when required, meet NACE specificationsMR0175 for sour gas.
The valves can handle a vast variety of fluids, slurries,semi-solids and almost any corrosive service inchemical, oil, petrochemical, gas, pulp, paperprocessing and other industries.
Standard valves with RPTFE seats can handle steamservice to 150 psig. Valves with carbon graphite filledPTFE seats are suitable for steam up to 250 psig. The valves comply with API 607(4) and BS 6755 firesafe standards and are ideally suited for LP gas, petroleum and petrochemical processing.
NOTE:
(3) For latest revision compliance contact the factory.
(4) Fire safe to API 607 Rev. 3, and BS 6755 for standard valves
and to API 607 Rev. 4 with graphite packing due to two
secondary metal-to-metal seals when resilient seats and
seals evaporate in a fire:
1. Body seating edge for ball. 2. Stem shoulder-body.
