Vehicles & Mileage
Comparison between Vehicle Population and Miles Driven Trends
• 1970: LDGV&M were 81.6% of vehicle population and accounted for 81.7% of miles driven.
• 1970: LDGT were 12.7% of vehicle population and accounted for 11% of miles driven.
• 2002: LDGV&M were 59.2% of vehicle population and accounted for 57.7% of miles driven.
• 2002: LDGT were 35.9% of vehicle population and accounted for 33.6% of miles driven.
• It would seem that vehicle population and miles driven have a one to one relationship.

Comparison between Vehicle Population and Miles Driven Trends
• 1970-1990: The rate of vehicle population for LDGV&M was 2.2 million/year.• 1992-2002: The rate of vehicle population for LDGV&M was cut in half to 1.1
million/year.• 1970-1984: The rate of vehicle population for LDGT was 1.3 million/year.• 1984-2002: The rate of vehicle population for LDGT more than doubled to
2.9million/year.• Although the LDGV&M population has always been greater than the LDGT
population, if the most recent rates continue, this trend may be broken (the same can be said for miles driven).
• A dip in LGV&M population was seen from 1990-1992, which corresponds to a dip in miles driven from 1990-1995
• After 1984, the LDGT population began to rapidly increase, the same is true for miles driven.
The Miles Per Vehicle Cofactor
• 1974-2000: LDGT were driven more than LDGV&M on a per vehicle basis.• 2000-2002: LDGV&M began to exceed LDGT again as from 1970-1974.• 1972-1989: A decrease is seen for LDGV&M, while the increasing trend begins
in 1980.

Comparison between Miles Driven and Fuel Consumption
• 1970: LDGV&M accounted for 72.5% of fuel consumption as compared to 13.2% for LDGT.• 2002: LDGV&M accounted for only 44.2% of fuel consumption as compared to 32.4% for LDGT.• LDGT may eventually account for more fuel consumption than LDGV&M.• The dips in fuel consumption while the miles driven steadily increases, shows that there is not a
one to one relationship.

The Gallons Per Mile Cofactor
• LDGT: Fuel consumption has always been on the rise except for a dip between 1979-1982.
• LDGV&M: Fuel consumption dips between 1973-1976, the maximum is seen in 1978, and this level is only beginning to be reached since the dip between 1989-1991.
• Miles driven has an continually increasing trend, which explains why this cofactor is essentially a downward trend.
