    Summary Report on Vegetable Garden On-going Project to the

    Communities in Tongatapu

    Bac%ground The Healthy eating program has been identifed as a program that can helpcommunities to reduce unhealthy behaviours lead to non-communicablediseases. This program is to develop the communities’ capacity skills on how toprevent the risks o having NCs such as eating healthy oods which are readilyavailable to easy access. !oor ood choices indicate the needs o thecommunities to improve the way o eating in order to maintain health. There aresome barriers that prevent people rom receiving good healthy oods such aslack o vegetables" increase o processed oods and costs o healthy oods areunable to a#ord. $ack o vegetables can create a di#erence in people’s eatingbehaviours and knowledge towards healthy oods.

     This pro%ect is based on the demands rom the communities to improve andincrease the level o vegetables consumption. There are si& communitiesparticipated in the pro%ect and they are eager to involve as evidence o positivesupports o the program. These si& communities are including !opua" Havelu"Ha’ateiho" Ha’alalo" 'ua’amotu and Nukunuku.

     This pro%ect is currently underway through partnership between the (inistry oHealth and the (inistry o )griculture with unding rom the *orld Health+rgani,ation. This partnership is a strong mechanism that helps to strengthenthis on-going process o conducting this program. This pro%ect is consisting oour phases and is currently in phase one. !rior to planting vegetables the

    (inistry o Health arranged a meeting with the community coordinators todiscuss the main issues reuired to be ulflled beore initiation o the program.

     These are the main issues that have been addressed in the meeting with thecommunity coordinators.

    B(4G+T This on-going pro%ect is currently unding by the *orld Health +rganisationthrough their allocation budget to utilise or Healthy 3ating programs. )s withoutthe assistant o this onor agency we might not able to implement our activitiesin the communities. This und is utilised to provide the communities withvegetable seedlings, top soils and animal manures or their vegetablegardening.

    Conclusion This pro%ect is an on-going program that is currently underway in si&communities in Tongatapu. 0t’s a great e&perience to intervene with thecommunities in increasing their potentials and motives towards health. 0commend the enthusiasm and supports o the communities and it shows thecommunities willingness to make health changes. )t the end o this pro%ect wewish to achieve our goal as people in the communities will create a di#erence intheir lives or a uture Happy and Healthy Tongans.
