Vedic Mathematics -Addition Hi I hope I am able to write a decent tutorial. We will start with addition and subtraction and our aim is achieve mastery over mental calculating addition and subtraction of 2 digit numbers than progress to three digit numbers and finally to four digit numbers. What you may read below may not appear as Vedic Mathematics and truth is it might now be Vedic Mathematics so why am I writing about it? Well simply because this is how I was taught by my teacher to make my concept stronger, as following methods play important role in Multiplication , Squaring and Division. 10 10 is the most important number for you. Simply speaking when we 93 it is simply 9 x 10 + 3x 1= 90 + 3 = 93 What I am writing below are not any rules and are just few basic concepts. When we are in tiny tots (for me it was like more than 23 years ago) we were taught to add and subtract. 34+ 69= meant we would first 9 + 4 = 13 than carry 1 ten’s place than add 3+ 6= 9 add 1 which we carried over hence 9 would become 10 and finally we would get 103.

Vedic Mathematics -Addition

HiI hope I am able to write a decent tutorial.

10

10 is the most important number for you. Simply speaking when we 93 it is simply 9 x 10 + 3x 1= 90 + 3 = 93

What I am writing below are not any rules and are just few basic concepts.

In VM we do it other way. We draw this line separator that divides number into units, tens , hundred and so on . Basic aim is to add numbers of same value together i.e. digit at ten’s place with digit at ten’ s place , unit at digit’s place at with units at digit’s place .

Instead of going from right to left we go left to right i.e. first add those digit that are coming first i.e. in this example digit at ten’s place than we add digit at unit’s place.

To do that we draw a line between 3 and 4 in 34 and 6 and 9 in 69 like this 3 / 4 and 6 / 9. Instead of adding 4 and 9 first we add 3 and 6 first 3 + 6 =9 now we add 4 + 9= 13, Since I told u 10 is like king of numbers in VM so when you adding 3 + 6 you are basically adding 30 + 90 so 3 + 9 means 90 not 9.

Page 2: Vedic Mathematics Addition

When you add 4 + 9 you are adding digit at unit’s place so 4 x 1 = 4 and 9 x 1 = 9 so from addition 4+ 9 = 13 and 13 is 10 x 1 + 3x 1= 10 + 3 = 13. So we write 3 in units place and than carry over 1 or 10 to addition of 3+6 or 30 + 60 and it becomes 30 + 60 + 10 = 100. Hence it 100 + 3 = 103.

You may be wondering what the hell I did? I mean why complicate or why try to make something as simple and basic as addition sound so smart. Well as of now you just adding two digits numbers, once you get the hang of the concept you will be able you add 4digit numbers also.

In real practice we follow method given below.

To simplify just write 34 as 30+ 4 as 3 / 4 And 69 as 60+9 as 6 / 9 So you are concern is adding 3 and 6 first and ------------ Writing 9 0+ 13 103

From this example onwards I won’t write whole detail.

39 + 94

3 / 9 9 / 4---------12 + 13133

56+ 87

5 / 68 / 7-------13 + 13143

47 + 64

Page 3: Vedic Mathematics Addition

4 / 76 / 4-------10 + 11111

Lets see now adding 3 digit number with 2 digit number.

457 + 86

45 / 7 8 / 6--------53 + 13543

To add 45 + 8 is a lot easier than trying add 457 + 86.

686 + 59

68 / 6 5 / 9-------73 + 15745

948 + 94

94 / 8 9 / 4-------103 + 121042

Page 4: Vedic Mathematics Addition

In above mentioned example when we add 103 + 12 instead of writing digit from left to write i.e first adding 103 + 1 first write 2 down on paper than add 103 + 1 cause nothing in 103 is at units place i.e. 103 is 103x10= 1030.So it has 0 units place and 2 in 12 will not be added to anything so whey dwell about 2 just simply write 2 first , so 948 + 94

94 / 8 9 / 4-------103 + 12

+ 2104

1042.

P.S this is no tip just a way to work faster.

Few more examples.

587 + 92

58 / 7 9 / 2--------67 + 9679

759 + 64

75 / 9 6 / 4--------81 + 13823

378 + 56

37/8 5/6

Page 5: Vedic Mathematics Addition

-----42+ 14434

Lets try 3 digit number with 3 digit number

457 + 679

45 / 767/ 9--------Here Instead of adding 45 + and 67 we again break them mentally or actually i.e

4 / 5 / 76 / 7 / 9----------10 + 12 + 16 as I had mentioned before simply write 6 at units place even without thinking.

So it becomes

6 3 ( 1+ 2 i.e. 1 from 13 added to 2 from 12 )11 ( 10 + 1 i.e 1 from 12 added to 10)

1136

569 + 789

5 / 6 / 97 / 8 / 9 ----------

12 + 14 + 18 ----------- 1358 so while writing the answer down first write 8 than to left of 8 write 4 + 1 = 5, than to left of 5 write 12 +1 = 13 Hence it is 1358.

747 + 684

Page 6: Vedic Mathematics Addition

7 / 4 / 76 / 8 / 4-----------13 + 12 + 11

1431

478 + 686

4 / 7 / 86 / 8 / 6----------10 + 15 + 141164

Different Levels

LEVEL 1

478 + 686

4/7/86/8/6------10 15 141164

LEVEL 2

478 + 686

Page 7: Vedic Mathematics Addition

47/868/6------10 15 141164

LEVEL 3

478 + 686 = 4/7/8 + 6/8/6 = 10 + 15+ 14 = 10+ 16+ 4 = 1164

LEVEL 4

478 + 686 = 4/7/8 + 6/8/6 = 10 + 15+ 14 = 11 + 6 + 4 = 1164

How to do it faster

1) Start with addition of two digit numbers to two digit number using level 1 method.

2) Do not try to be whiz kid and use pencil and paper for initial practice.3) Make a sheet with at least 20-30 sums.4) Start with Level 1 till than Level 4 do not jump directly to level 4
