Out & about
Have yourself an
We are all feeling the squeeze and we are also all too aware of the impact our lifestyles have on the environment. But Christmas isn’t the time for all that. It’s about celebrating, indulging and giving and receiving gifts isn’t it?
Here at The Village Emporium, we are firm believers in the power of a little imagination. Add in some responsible thinking and suddenly it doesn’t have to be all about manic consumerism and our impact on the environment. Here are 10 tips to help you make 2012 a thrifty, ecologically-responsible Christmas.
PresentsThrifty Do what’s known as a ‘secret santa’ so that you only buy a present for one member of the family, or one of your close friends, given anonymously. Or, why not agree to only give presents to the children or agree a budget of say £10 per present. You’ll be amazed how imaginative you can be with only a few pounds to spend.
Eco See what you can buy locally. Try and buy all your presents in one shopping trip, or from the same shop, reducing your carbon footprint. The independent quarter in Rugby offers a wealth of variety in just a few streets. It’s like having a department store on the doorstep.
CardsThrifty Get the children to make the close family cards. Ever-charming, they will make a pleasant change from bought cards and will be far more valued.
Eco Buy cards printed on recycled card and don’t forget to recycle the cards you received after Christmas. Why not send e-cards to some of your contacts? E-cards are an inexpensive way to send Christmas greetings and don’t impact the environment.
eco thriftyChristmas

thrifty Christmas treeEco Choose a real Christmas tree. In addition to being biodegradable and recyclable, Christmas tree farms provide a haven for birds to shelter and the trees help to absorb greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change. However, make sure your tree is from a sustainable source where new trees are planted for every one that is cut down.
Thrifty Invest in a tree with roots. They are slightly more expensive but you can replant it ready for next year and the years to come. Planting a rooted Christmas tree in your garden also helps to offset CO2 emissions.
Christmas dinnerEco Use produce that’s in season and buy locally at farmers markets, keeping your contribution to food miles down. There’s no need to buy sprouts that have been grown in another continent or turkeys from a far corner of Europe.
Thrifty Ask each guest take responsibility for bringing one aspect of the meal such as the Christmas pudding or cheese board. Rotate within the family so that a different household puts on the festivities each year.
DecorationsThrifty Go foraging for free, natural décor to dress your Christmas dinner table. Pine cones sprayed silver or gold make great place name holders and the deep green and luscious red of a holly sprig looks beautiful set against a crisp, white napkin. Home-made decorations such as heart biscuits strung on ribbon, or ones made by the children, look charming and can be interspersed with bought ones.
Eco Many decorations are manufactured in Asia and have to be transported around the world creating more carbon emissions. Choose natural, foraged decorations or home-made creations alongside your bought ones. Orange and apple slices (dried overnight in a very low oven), pine cones and cinnamon sticks all work well. Try our idea for a natural centrepiece using a church candle surrounded by dried orange slices and cinnamon sticks.

Bowen therapy – the gentle wayMany of us suffer aches and pains which can be debilitating and lower our natural immune system. Bowen is a hands-on remedial therapy that may help a wide range of issues, according to local Bowen therapist Patt Stock. It can bring long-term, often rapid, relief from pain, more mobility plus greater levels of energy and improved quality of life. It may help conditions such as back pain, neck pain, arthritis as well as sports injuries and is suitable for all ages from babies to the elderly
The treatments Treatments consist of a series of specific rolling moves across fascia or soft tissue associated with particular muscle groups, ligaments, tendons and nerves. Short resting periods are included between each set of moves to allow the body to respond and to begin its own healing process. Follow-up treatments review the progress and establish the degree of response. The treatment can be performed over loose, light single-layer clothing.
Patt finds that most conditions are resolved in 2-3 sessions. Many clients opt for routine maintenance treatments at regular intervals to maintain body
balance and muscular-skeletal integrity, thus investing in their health and optimising their physical needs. The treatment is holistic in nature and concentrates on treating the body as an entire unit rather than focussing on individual concerns.
Patt came to Bowen Therapy and NST from a background in medicine. She holds clinics in Southam, Daventry, Leamington and Rugby. Several other therapists work from herclinics offering a choice of treatments ranging from acupuncture, reflexology, Chinese medicine to talking therapies.

Spots, stripes, flowers or leopard print – wellington boots are no longer reserved for farmers, they’ve become a fashionable footwear essential.
People have been wearing boots to keep their feet warm and dry for thousands of years. The earliest snow boots were discovered on an ancient iceman thought to be 5000 years old, and were made from bearskin, tree bark and deer pelts.
Of course, the welly as we know it is named after the Duke of Wellington. He asked his shoemakers to adapt the hessian boots worn by men in the mid-18th century so that they were waterproof, and provided more protection in battle. They designed a leather boot that had a low heel and fitted closely to the leg. Meanwhile, the industrial manufacture of rubber was being developed, and an American called Henry Lee Norris founded the North British Rubber Company in Scotland. Now known as Hunter Boot Ltd, the factory made the first rubber wellingtons which became popular with farmers.
Production rapidly increased during World War I, when the War Office asked Hunter to make boots that would keep the men’s feet dry in the trenches.
Wonderful wellies!Again in World War II, the factory supplied the boots for British forces working in flooded conditions.
After the wars, wellies became popular with workers and the general public, and in the last few years, manufacturers have taken the traditional design and given it an injection of colour and style. Anything goes these days - you can even get white wedding wellingtons!
If you need a new pair of boots this winter, here is a quick round-up of what to look for:
l Cheaper wellies tend to be made from PVC. These are fine for occasional wear, but they can make your feet sweat and are not very hardwearing.
l 100% rubber boots are more expensive, but will last longer.
l Boots lined with neoprene will keep your feet really warm.
l With cotton-lined boots, you can decide whether or not you need to wear socks for extra warmth.
l If you have wide calves, look for wellingtons with a waterproof gusset so you can adjust the fit.
l Some wellies have special treads to make them more suitable for walking long distances.
l Snow boots have a thick rubber sole, a laced upper, and often a fleece collar around the top.
Of course, when you get home from your walk in the wet, you’re faced with the age-old problem of getting your wellies off. Some boots fold down at the top, or have a gusset or zip to loosen them. Failing that, you can buy an inexpensive boot jack – simply wedge your heel in the jaws, tread on the base and pull!

Eat seasonally
Game is at its peak during winter. Venison, pheasant and duck are all now in season, make a great change from the more usual choice of meats and can be easy to cook! Impress your friends with our recipe for duck breast with clementines and greens.
Try something new this winter
Celeriac and Cavolo Nero are both in season in November and December. Don’t be put off by Celeriac’s gnarly appearance - the ugliest of vegetables makes one of the nicest soups and is so simple to make.
Cavolo Nero sounds very exotic, but is actually a type of cabbage. Usually grown in Southern Italy, Cavolo Nero, which translates as black cabbage, is now being grown in the UK and is available in supermarkets. It is great in hearty meals like soups and also makes a fantastic accompaniment to meat and fish dishes.
And it’s not just vegetables that we can get excited about this time of year. Fruit might not seem an obvious choice but pomegranates, clementines, satsumas and cranberries are all in season. Plums, damsons and blackberries are still around, perfect for desserts or sauces for the game that is now at its best.
What to eat now – Village Emporium style!Autumn may be giving way to the harsher, colder winter, but with so many lovely foods to look forward to at this time of year we can cope with the weather!

Plum, Cranberry and Orange crumble
We know orange and cranberry makes a perfect
sweetly-sharp accompaniment to Christmas meat
and game, but what about a new take on that
classic British dessert?
IngredientsFor the filling800 g fresh plums, halved and stoned
100 g frozen cranberries (thawed)
Finely grated rind of 1 orange
1 tbsp squeezed orange juice
1 tsp ground cinnamon1 tsp vanilla extract175 g granulated sugar

dish.Put the raw plums, orange rind and juice and
granulated sugar in the dish and toss together.
Measure the flour and butter into a processor and
whiz until it looks like bread crumbs. Tip into a
bowl, stir in the Demerara sugar and sprinkle on
top of the plums. Level the top with the back of a spoon.
Bake in the preheated oven for about 30–40
minutes, or until pale golden brown on top and
bubbling around the edges.

Duck Breast with Clementines and Cavolo Nero or KaleIngredients2 large duck breastsSaltOlive oil125 ml orange/clementine juice3 clementines, segments cut in half
MethodPreheat the oven to 175°C/350°F/Gas 4Score the fat of the duck breasts in a cross-hatch pattern through the fat, down to the meat. Season the skin with salt.
Gently heat a tablespoon of olive oil in a large sauté pan and coat the bottom of the pan. Cook the duck breasts skin side down, on a low heat for 30 minutes or so to render the fat from the breasts. This process ensures you get a crispy skin. As the fat builds up in the pan, remove and save for later.
When all the fat has rendered out, turn the heat to medium-high and brown both sides of the duck breast. Transfer to a preheated tray in the oven and cook for about 7 to 8 minutes for me-dium rare, 9-10 minutes for medium. Let the duck rest on a board for about 10 minutes before slicing.
Add the orange juice and clementine segments to the duck pan, incorporating the brown bits from the bottom of the pan. When the juice has reduced by half, add some of the chicken stock, thyme and season with salt. Continue to add the stock and reduce until it reaches a sauce-like consistency. Season to taste.
Meanwhile, add some of the reserved duck fat to a large pan. Add the three garlic cloves and cook until lightly golden and then discard. Cut the Cavolo Nero or Kale into 1 inch strips and toss in the infused oil, seasoning with salt and pepper. Sauté the greens until they are wilted but still vibrant looking.
Slice each duck breast and fan the slices over the greens. Spoon some of the sauce on and around the duck. Garnish with pomegranate seeds.

The season to be merry is almost upon us, and temptations are all around, but it’s your choice if you’d rather not suffer from that bout of indigestion or having a tighter waistband after the holidays, so here are some suggestions for a healthier holiday;
1 The traditional Christmas dinner is, nutritionally speaking, as excellent meal, lean turkey meat is good for you, it is low in saturated fat and high in nutrients, and a great source of protein.
2 How much can I sing the praises of the vegetable accompaniments? – pile these high and have them steamed or lightly boiled, not drenched in honey and butter, just enjoy the natural flavour of these wonderful veggies. Potatoes are rich in potassium and B vitamins, keep the peel on for vitamin C. For a healthy alternative to duck or goose fat try cooking in rapeseed oil and add some sweet potatoes for added nutritional value.
3 Keep the stuffing, sausages and bacon to a minimum; these are low in nutritional value and high in calories.
4 Cranberries are rich in flavanoids, helping to keep your immune system healthy, but how about making your own cranberry sauce? Shop-bought will be laden with sugar and unnecessary calories – so simmer fresh cranberries in orange juice and red wine.
5 Drink a glass of water before sitting down to a large meal, it’ll help you eat less.
6 Drink water before, in between and after drinking alcohol, your liver will thank you for it.
7 Keep an eye on portion sizes, this is the time of giving, and often portions get bigger. If you wouldn’t eat that much normally, why start now?
8 Don’t go out hungry, and never drink alcohol on an empty stomach – have a nutritious snack such as cottage cheese, hummus, chicken or prawns on rye/spelt crackers.
9 If you have overindulged on a night out, have a similar nutritious snack before going to bed, it will help keep your blood sugar stable during the night – don’t forget, drinking alcohol is just the same as drinking a glass of sugar!
On the first day of christmas.... 12 nutritional tips for a healthy festive season
q If you feel the need for a cooked breakfast, don’t feel too guilty – poached egg on wholemeal toast with grilled tomatoes and mushrooms is a nutritionally rich meal to start the day.
w It’s OK to say ‘No thank you’ – you don’t have to have a chocolate or mince pie every time one is offered.
e If bringing some food to a gathering of friends or colleagues, instead of adding to the pile of sweet treats on offer, take along alternative healthy treats, such as satsumas, clementines or nuts and olives.
It’s traditional to go out for a walk on Boxing Day, well why not on Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day as well – we have such fabulous countryside locally, go and enjoy, and even if it’s cold and rainy, what the hey, we live in Britain, we’re not going to let a bit of rain get in our way. If you’re not sure of where to go for a walk, there are lots of suggestions on www.walk4life.info.

Rugby Fitted Kitchens, who recently moved to their stunning new showroom at Cottage Leap, Rugby, are proud to announce they have been appointed as the area’s only AGA authorised showroom.
RFK are displaying a working model of the all new ‘Total Control’ model in pewter finish. The ‘Total Control’ is AGA’s newest innovation and offers all the usual features of a traditional AGA but with the added benefit of controllability – it’s “On when you need it and off when you don’t” and has truly redefined a British icon.
Whether it’s operated manually via its discreetly hidden touch control panel, its AIMS remote control unit or while at work using an iphone app the ‘Total Control’ can be up to temperature and ready to cook within an hour – a truly remarkable feat for this classic heat store cooker that can now firmly claim to be a 21st century product for a 21st century world!
With 3 ovens – roasting, baking and simmering and two hotplates – boiling and simmering, the 32amp all electric ‘Total Control’ really does offer the cook all the flexibility they are ever likely to need and, when used purely for cooking, for as little as £8.00 per week!
The all new ‘Total Control’ retails at £9895.00 inc VAT, delivery & installation.
It can be viewed in situ as the centrepiece to RFK’s other new addition – the beautifully handcrafted Edwin Loxley Inframe Kitchen display finished in a combination of solid black walnut and handpainted doors finished in Farrow & Ball ‘Elephants Breath’ and complemented with Silestone Sensa solid
granite worksurfaces.
This truly stunning kitchen, made entirely from solid and veneered timber using time honoured cabinet making skills including hardwood cabinet frames, extra thick doors, traditionally crafted dovetail drawer boxes and concealed butt hinges, takes pride of place in RFK’s new showroom.Edwin Loxley pride themselves on producing beautifully handcrafted kitchens on an individual commission basis where the word ‘special’ only exists in the sense that the whole kitchen is specially made for you as a one off to suit your tastes, requirements and the architectural requirements of your property, yet at a price that can be justified.
For more information on the AGA Total Control, Edwin Loxley Kitchens and the full range of products on offer at Rugby Fitted Kitchens Ltd either call in at the new showroom at Cottage Leap, Rugby, CV21 3XP, telephone and talk to one of their highly skilled and experienced designers on: 01788 547647 or visit their website: www.rugbyfittedkitchens.co.uk

Deck the halls
Your home
An abundance of cut-foil decorations, thin wispy tinsel and multicoloured fairy lights are my earliest recollection of Christmas decorations, where the lounge was proudly decorated like a pub (you can tell I was an 80’s child!). My brother and I would drag a dining room chair into the lounge for our father to stand on (a time before health and safety was an issue), and he’d hang the same dusty decora-tions we’d bring down from the fusty loft every year. He’d insist that “we must use the same holes as last year” as he pushed the drawing pins through the Artex ceiling. To be fair to my parents, by the 1990’s Mum tried to modernise the decorations, opting for a more muted colour pallet of red green and white, but as kids we hated the idea of such radical change, but alas the foil decs were relegated to our bedrooms.
Although I hold these memories dear, I wouldn’t have this kind of decoration anywhere near my minimalist abode, and much prefer real ‘trimmings’ wherever possible. I don’t think there’s anything more special than a family day out collecting pine cones and seed heads, then returning to the garden to cut long lengths of Ivy to wrap around the spin-dles on the staircase whilst humming “Deck the Halls with Boughs of Holly” (words from 1881). The word ‘deck’ in the title is of course referring to the verb meaning ‘adorn’ and entered the language from the Dutch word ‘dekken’, meaning ‘to cover’ (although you’d be forgiven for thinking it sounds like a piece of furniture from Ikea!).
Both Holly and Ivy will last a week or so without water when cut and brought into the house (longer still if its cooler), but other foliage will require some moisture. The easiest way to make your own table decoration is to take an old 6 inch terracotta pot and
squash a wetted piece of green oasis inside. Place a church candle centrally and add in cut pieces of Holly, Ivy and other evergreen leaves, as well as berries such as Holly and Cotoneaster. You can even add in pine cones (scented with a few drops of festive scented oil) or push in a couple of Cinnamon sticks. Do make sure you place it on a level saucer or similar, keep it moist and don’t let the candle burn too low (remembering never to leave a lit candle unattended!).
Other festive ideas to do this month:
• Use excess trimmings from the Christmas tree to make a wreath
• Plant up a colourful festive pot for outside your front door, and why not add some battery oper-ated lights
• Ensure your Poinsettia is placed out of cold draughts
Oh, and don’t forget to make a gardening Christmas wish list for Father Christmas!
Merry Christmas!
Invest in the best.

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!
Old Fashioned Values Pay Dividends For Cloudy2ClearIt’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services.
Managing Director Trevor Skidmore feels that his approach is the key. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about
saving people money, although that obviously helps. Some people may call the way I do things a little old-fashioned but it’s amazing how a simple mix of manners, punctuality and personal service increases your business. I’m constantly taken aback by customers who are shocked that we turn up when we say we will, do the job that is required and clean up after ourselves. I’m afraid it indicates to me that there are many companies who don’t and that’s just not fair to the customer.’
Cloudy2Clear service the whole of Northamptonshire from their local depots and Trevor is finding that
his ethos is proving to be a major factor in his success. ‘When I started out I just did the things that came naturally to me. I really hate being let down by tradesmen so I was determined not to let that happen to my customers. As it turns out that little bit of extra care has meant I get friends and familyof people I have done
work for on the phone constantly so it’s not just personally satisfying but good for business too. At the end of the day it’s not rocket science, is it?’
So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Trevor a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Your garden
I’ve heard people in the past say that gardening is nothing more than outdoor housework, and I’ve had a few people say to me that they’d love a ‘tidy gar-den’, but can a garden be too tidy? I enjoy the con-temporary look of a formal garden with clean lines and tightly clipped planting, but I am also pleased to see more naturalistic planting, examples of which we saw earlier in the year at the Olympic Park. It would seem though, that my choice of ‘tidy’ plants is not always cherished by others.
“This plant is far too messy for me” yelled a voice from deep within the herbaceous border. It came from a woman on a mission to hack down the flower spikes which had shot up from her Stipa gigantea. I sat in the conservatory and thought ‘thank goodness I don’t still live at home!’ As a garden designer, peo-ple pay me to advise them what they should grow, be it something suitable for the location, something fashionable, or something that will compliment the colour of their new jacquard curtains! But it wasn’t until I sat there and watched my mum tear out those delicate flower spikes that I realised not everyone likes the same plants, or has the same understanding of a ‘tidy garden’.
Compact plants with a neat growing habit have to be the best of both worlds, because you don’t have to prune against its natural growth habit, therefore making yourself less work in the garden. For this reason evergreens are the perfect choice, as they don’t shed leaves onto the lawn in autumn and are generally slow growing. Shrubs such as Aucuba japonica ‘Rozannie’ and Euphorbia ‘Blackbird’, or the more colourful herbaceous Rudbeckia ‘Goldsturn’ which never needs staking, just ‘chopping’ once per year.
With this in mind, will I be cutting back and tidying up the garden this November? Is it right to sweep up the leaves from the borders, denying hedgehogs of the insulation crispy leaves provide, not to men-tion food the worms will drag into the soil. Is it fair to snip the seed heads from the ornamental grasses; to bin the beautiful dried Allium skeletons, or slash
the Verbena bonariansis to the ground, denying the birds the seed? I don’t know, but what I am propos-ing is to leave well alone for at least another month and enjoy the range of oatmeal brown colours for a little while longer … and as for mum … well, let’s just say the compost bin is already overflowing!
Other jobs to do this month:
• Sow sweet peas in a cold greenhouse
• Plant wallflowers without delay
• Lightly prune roses to prevent wind rock
• November is the best month to plant tulip bulbs. Bury holly leaves with bulbs if squirrels are a problem (wear your gloves though!)
• Resist pruning hydrangeas - the dead flowers will protect bulbs from the frost
• Clean out bird nesting boxes - wear gloves to avoid any parasites.
Until next time, enjoy your garden!

TLC for you and your
VW Group car
A smile and the offer of a coffee was my welcome at Vasstech Auto Services, Rugby’s only VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda independent garage. I was there for a free safety check on my VW and service advisor Simon had my booking details ready so I was soon upstairs in the comfortable lounge whilst my car was given the once-over.
Customer care comes firstDavid-Ian Dawson, a VW trained Master Technician, started Vasstech in 2009 when he realised there was no VW specialist in Rugby. Not only did he want to save owners having to drive miles to a main dealer, his aim was to offer friendlier, customer focused yet highly professional service at affordable prices. Judging by my experience and the customer testimonials on the web site, he has succeeded.
Partner Nathalie Morgan and Simon Gill are responsible for customer care. They are both from customer service backgrounds, not motor trade, so they understand the importance of keeping customers informed of progress and can explain technical issues in layman’s language. “We understand that it can be quite stressful when something is wrong with your car or the person on the other end of the phone might just be having a bad day. We always try to make sure our customers feel we are human and we care!”
Technical excellence is guaranteed by David-Ian who has been passionate about cars all his life and has over 12 years experience in the trade. He is really proud of the skilled team he has built: Peter Coling is a Renault trained Master Technician as well as lifelong car enthusiast and Alan Cook is another VW Master Technician. David-Ian has also invested
in the latest VW diagnostic equipment. “It’s rare to find so much knowledge and passion in one place,” says David-Ian.
Free collection & delivery for readers of The Village Emporium
Nathalie and David-Ian realise that for people living in a village, it can be hard to drop off a car or do without it for a day. So they offer either a free collection and delivery to all villages covered by The Village Emporium or you can book a courtesy car. Alternatively they will give you a lift into town or work.
When my car had been checked David-Ian talked me through an easy to understand colour coded report which prioritised what needed to be done. What’s more all the work was priced so I could budget for it. It’s all on their system so when I call to make the appointment they know exactly what needs doing and how long it will take. They will also send me a free reminder when my MOT is due.
For a free safety check or to book a service appointment call Nathalie or Simon on 01788 542555. Whilst they are VW group car specialists they are happy to work on all makes.
